Fiona Soutter’s book A Scientific Approach to Rewiring Self Love is several things. It’s a survey of findings in modern neuroscience about how our ideas lead to our actual circumstances in real life. It’s a scientific explanation of how certain behavioral patterns become hard-wired, leading to an perceived inability to change, which results in similar outcomes in comparable life situations. It’s also a program of action for those who are dissatisfied with a lack of progress in their lives, who want to achieve a state of self-love. The book is very well researched and written. Each chapter begins with an explanation of the science behind a suggested program of action, followed by concrete steps the reader can take to achieve a desired result. Most importantly, the book dwells on why the suggested program works instead of simply insisting that it does. I did not come to the book as one seeking to change my life, but I have found practices here that I think could do that, largely because of the author’s skill in explaining them.
