LUNAR NEW YEAR WITH THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR is a charming holiday board book. The book includes tabs above and on the side of the book with each one attached to a page. Simple phrases present some of the key celebrations of the Lunar New Year such as dancing dragons, oranges, and dumplings.
What I loved: This is a simple but cute introduction to the Lunar New Year for the youngest readers. Simple phrases on each page keep the pages turning as quickly as little ones would like. The colors and imagery are true to the original style of Eric Carle with the Very Hungry Caterpillar appearing somewhere on each page.
The tabs are a particularly cool element of the book that help the littlest fingers to turn pages easily. They can be grabbed with ease and moved to open up each page spread throughout. Pictures on the tabs hint at what can be found in each scene.
What left me wanting more: As a small thing, I expected to see more of a story involving the caterpillar, and he is not mentioned in the story, except at the beginning and end. While this brevity works well for little ones, those who enjoy more of a plotline will be left wishing there was just a bit more!
Final verdict: LUNAR NEW YEAR WITH THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR is a cute board book that introduces the Lunar New Year and its celebrations to the youngest readers.
Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.

Happy Year of the Horse to everyone who is celebrating the Lunar New Year! It is always fun to have an appropriate book for young children to introduce special holidays and this board book is perfect for little readers to be introduced to their culture with a favorite character.
What will the very hungry caterpillar see during the celebration of the New Year? Fireworks are always a part of the celebration. Dragon dances are always a lot of fun. Special foods like noodles and fish are part of the celebration. Everyone will also enjoy oranges as alucky gift. The red envelopes are a special part of the celebration. Gold coins are always put into the red envelopes.
The illustrations feature the popular little caterpillar on each page.
This board book was published by Penguin/com/kids in cooperation with the World of Eric Carle. It has an ISBN of 979-8-217-05084-0.

A sturdy tabbed book for introducing Chinese New Year traditions. Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is based on the Chinese calendar, a lunisolar calendar rather than a lunar calendar. The title should be changed to "Chinese New Year" or "Spring Festival". Some of the traditions described lack specificity, e.g, Firecrackers are lit not just to welcome the New Year but to scare away evil spirits, or "Nian", a mythical beast that appears each New Year's Eve and terrorises people and livestock. Moreover, mandarin oranges, rather than regular oranges, are shared. The book could be improved by adding touch-and-feel elements.

Hungry Caterpillar for Lunar New Year!!! Has cute tabs. Talks about the different parts of celebrating - lanterns, dragon dance, firecrackers or fireworks, dumplings, noodles, fish, gold coins in red envelope. Wasn’t the most interactive though, I mainly asked the kids what colors things were, but if you read this 1-1 with children, babies would like to touch the side tabs that stick out of each page.

Yes, I knew about the lunar New Year, but didn’t know the symbolism for various items, noodles for long life and oranges are lucky gifts. This title proves even an adult can learn from a board book!
