One hot summer night, he was my first, but my small town hero has a he’s a sea monster!
My fiance is cheating, our wedding is cancelled and I can’t face going back to Sydney to a life I never wanted. When I run to my parents’ holiday home at Kraken Cove rather than face reality, those hot summer memories all come flooding back.
And when it turns out the builder we hired to renovate is my long lost first love, Luke, we reconnect and it’s hotter than ever. When Luke touches me, it’s like I’ve always been his. He knows all the ways to set me on fire and have me begging for more. He’s like the handyman for my heart, someone whose smile makes me feel like everything’s going to be OK.
But we’re from two different worlds, literally! He’s a kraken, tied to the sea and to his family. All too soon I’ll have to go back. Back to Sydney and the job I hate, and constant pressure from my parents to be someone I’m not. If only I could find a way to escape to Kraken Cove forever.
This book is part of the Mated to the Monster multi-author monster romance series. All books can be read as standalone stories.
Ami Wright is a romance author who loves history, food, travel, trashy TV and smutty books. She loves writing science fiction romance with time travelling Romans, feisty cat people and plenty of spice!
Ami lives in Australia with her partner and two kids. If she ever gets any spare time between working, writing and mothering, she reads, cooks, watches history documentaries and dreams of the days when international travel becomes a reality again!
With a story line that makes you sink into the couch and flip pages with hunger, this sweet second chance romance was everything and more! Luke is absolutely precious but whew he can be HAWTTT in the bedroom. Poor Mia has been through it but she is so resilient and her call back to Kraken Cove brings her home to Luke. Such a sweet and spicy story!
ARC Review I've been a big Wright fan from the start so I was excited to read this new series and it's wonderful! This is a small town, cozy romance (don't worry it's still very spicy!) and I felt the summery beach vibes keenly, I could practically hear the seagulls and smell the ocean, it put me right back to my holiday in Steveston and Victoria BC!
In this world, monsters are beginning to be accepted by humans but they're still judged and keep their true forms hidden, so our heroine who hires a local handyman to work on her beach house has no idea he's actually a Kraken, until he gets wet! Boring as it sounds, I actually loved them working on the house together, picking out tiles and stuff, it was adorable, they have such sweet chemistry! I fell in love with both characters and the whole cozy feeling right away. He's so incredibly supportive and attentive to her, I loved him!
The spice! Tentacles are, of course, everywhere, so if you love the wrapped up and being sweetly tortured by suction cups trope, you'll love this! I know I did! He also kind of glows in Kraken form and so do his um, juices, it also has a magical property revealed at the end! The dialogue during the spice is more everyday I'd say, stuff like "Is that good babe?" it's not super swoonworthy which is my only complaint, but the scenes themselves are very hot!
I loved this cute world, I loved the story, I loved this most wholesome and healthy couple, I just loved this book! Not everyone gets that Hallmark cozy feeling right but Wright does!
I thought this had a good story line that didn’t stick the landing though. I DNF’d at 37%, it wasn’t interesting enough to keep reading. This is a fast paced instalove that has a story that isn’t fleshed out enough, even for a short story. My enjoyment stopped after the first chapter. The ML kept saying how amazing of a person the FL was but didn’t know anything about her but that she liked to draw and was basing it on 1 encounter from 10 years ago. The FL just seemed kind of impulsive and miserable and had no drive for anything, she didn’t even have the courage to figure out that her fiance was cheating on her, her friend had to take the lead on that too. Neither character was interesting and it didn’t really explain who they were as people, it seemed very unrealistic.
Also, I am smart enough to use context clues and figure out verbiage but for the love of god, if you know that you are using slang terms, please let the class know. I am assuming this author is British because they are using British terms. Example: The word singlet was used a lot in reference to a shirt/hoodie, it is a term for t-shirt. According to Merriam-Webster, this is a British term. I don’t have a problem reading authors from other countries but it would prepare for the different terms, your books are universal whether you are American, British, etc.

The story line was cute but I felt like a lot of stuff got mentioned and then glazed over. The MFC was a whiny adult with no money the entire book. But she works in her dad’s law firm? I don’t want to explain to much without giving spoilers. But if you read this book just know that the MFC really lets everyone walk all over her and is very weak minded. And all this book is really about is s*x.
All in all this was very enjoyable. There were a few continuity issues and some things that were glossed over plot wise but overall a decent read. I'd love to read the next one about Noah when it comes out.
Tentacle suckers didn't make their debut until 82% which I fear made me quite sad. Lovely spice. Hated the ex/fiance obviously. Luke seemed like a sweetie
This was a cute and cozy second chance romance with a walking (slithering?) green flag MMC who had a dirty mouth and was ALL IN when he met his love *sighs dreamily*

Luke was Mia’s first on a hot summer night 10 years ago, but he left abruptly after they connected and they both went their separate ways…
Fast forward 10 years: Mia finds out her fiancée is cheating and calls off the wedding. Instead of heading back to Sydney and a life she’s never felt like she could truly be herself, she runs to her parents’ holiday house in Kraken Cove. While there? All her summer memories come flooding back, including the guy she’d never thought she’d see again.
Luke is Mia’s long-lost first love and he happens to be doing some work on her home in Kraken Cove. Old flames from 10 years ago that never died come roaring back to life and Mia feels seen and appreciated for the first time in her life – life with Luke is easy and feels right. And when he touches her? He has Mia begging for more and his secret coming to light – he’s a kraken.
Will Mia be able to heal from her past in order to start a future with Luke? Or are these two from such different worlds, that their hopes of being together sink to the deep?
Luke! No notes. He was as green as green flags come, and had plenty of things to say in the bedroom, okay? A green flag with a dirty mouth will get me every single time. Luke knew when he was with Mia that fateful night 10 years ago that she was his fated mate, his glow made that very clear, but at the time? Monsters weren’t common knowledge and he had to protect his secret and flee before Mia could see his shift. Once they reconnected? Luke knew he had to tell Mia and the opportunity presented itself in a way that will have you cackling. I loved how supportive and steadfast Luke was for Mia as she healed from the trauma with her ex, and wouldn’t mind finding my own green flag kraken shifter in a cozy beach town 🤭
🌊 “I will always be here for you. Always. No matter what.” ~~~ Mia is so wonderful! She’s such a nice person with a heart of gold. Even more, she’s so fierce and is always ready to stand up for herself. And she’s quite the talented artist, even though she’s set aside her dream for a future she doesn’t really want. Nevertheless, Mia is an amazing woman and I loved her so, so much!
Luke is such an incredible male! He’s kind, caring, sweet, fun and so charming. Even more, he is patient, thoughtful and fiercely protective. He might be a sweet cinnamon roll, but this gorgeous kraken comes with quite the filthy mouth, too. Luke is utterly irresistible and a genuinely good guy and I adored everything about him!
I absolutely loved everything that happened between Mia and Luke! Ten years ago, they shared a special moment, but then were separated. Now, Mia’s life is a mess after she breaks her engagement to her cheating ex and cancels her wedding. So, she runs to the only place she always felt close to her heart - Kraken Cove, where she takes on the task to continue renovating her family’s holiday home and the remodeler is no other than Luke. I absolutely adored Mia and Luke together! Their chemistry was fantastic and they were the sweetest together. And their banters and teasings were a delight to read. Even more, I couldn’t help but adore Luke for putting Mia’s needs first and being so patient, understanding and supportive of her while she put her life back in order. And the more time they spent together, the more Mia saw that the sweet kraken was the right male for her. And when they finally gave into the undeniable need for one another, the passionate moments they shared were so hot. What can I say… monsters DO do it better! Luke and Mia were absolutely perfect for each other and more than deserved to find happiness and love together.
Overall, Kraken Cove is a sweet and delightfully naughty story and I absolutely loved every single page of it!
Two young adults meet by the ocean, sparks flying between them—only to be separated by circumstances that leave them with nothing but the memories of their youth. A decade later, fate brings Luke and Mia back together in the wake of heartbreak, setting them on a new path amidst the charming, coastal small-town setting of Kraken’s Cove. Reading this second-chance romance felt like sipping a cold margarita with sugar on the rim while lounging beside the ocean on a sunny day. It has that almost rom-com vibe—maybe not groundbreaking in originality, but absolutely delightful. I caught myself grinning a couple times while reading it because it was just so sweet and fun. Luke is the ultimate cinnamon roll, the kind of guy who would do anything for his girl, while Mia is a cautious soul learning what it truly means to be loved and valued for who she is. Their dynamic was so endearing—there were challenges, but nothing toxic or over-the-top dramatic. Just patience, understanding, and a healthy romance. I loved the small town vibes interwoven with the stories of both their families, and how it's sprinkled through with some really delicious spice. I’m a sucker (pun fully intended) for tentacles and ocean creatures, so I was all in for the kraken family that welcomed Mia with open arms—all eight of them (I know my jokes are terrible don’t come at me). I do wish there had been more exploration of how supernaturals exist in this world and interact with humans, and honestly, I wouldn’t have minded even more tentacle action. But it was still a fantastic element, and I was thrilled to learn there will be more stories in this world—especially featuring more krakens! Highly recommend this for anyone looking for a sweet, heartwarming read with a fun cast of characters. Already eagerly waiting for the next installment in the series!
SUCH A CUTE STORY😭😭😭. I loved the characters. Let me start with Mia. I loved her growth. It was easy to feel connected to her. She was someone that was struggling with self confidence, feeling like she's not good enough and just letting people walk all over her. I loved that as the book went on She started changing little by little. She found her confidence which led her to finding her passion again. She learned that she's more than enough and fought for the man she was falling for. Even if she lost everything she would have been OK as long as she was with Luke.
Now Luke was amazing from the beginning of the book to the end. He was so sweet. He was respectful, a hard worker and wasn't afraid of showing Mia how beautiful he finds her and how much she means to him. He spent a lot of time showing her how much she deserves to be loved and wasn't afraid of showing her how much he wants her 🫣🤭.
Them together were fiery. They had an amazing connection. They got alone amazingly AND every time they got spicy you can feel the sparks flying and the love they had. I liked that they did kind of take their time a little bit. They hung out a lot and got to know each other which made them fall for one another and made me fall for them.
I loved Luke's family. They were so warm and welcoming. Loved how they got along and always support each other. Can't wait to read his brothers book. Hopefully his dad turns out ok I cannot deal with a different outcome pls. Her family was a mess. I liked how they had their own problems but towards the end they got their heads out their 🍑. They realized their daughter is her own person and they chose to respect that. They definitely had a lot of growth and I love that for Mia.
Definitely recommend this book. I need me a Kraken partner pls.🙏
Mia, the female human lead, and Luke, the male kraken shifter lead, had a one night stand as teenagers that Luke ran away from because he couldn’t control his shift from human to kraken. Now, a decade later, Mia is engaged to be married and Luke is renovating the house that should become her and her husband’s holiday home. When there are some issues with the renovation, Mia returns to Kraken Cove to find herself still unreasonably attracted to Luke. Then her best friend tells her that her fiancé is cheating and she breaks off the engagement.
Luke knew Mia was his fated mate that first night ten years ago but her family packed up and went home the next day. Now he has a potential second chance but he knows he can’t cope with being Mia’s rebound fling; he needs her to be able to commit to a real relationship. And her family and ex-fiancé don’t want Mia to change her plans…
This story is dual POV, well written and edited, and a sweet and steamy, contemporary fantasy, fated mates, second chance romance. I enjoyed Luke’s confident understanding of himself and his willingness to wait for the right time for Mia. I enjoyed Mia’s character development and her growing certainty about who she was and what she wanted out of life. I enjoyed the relationship building and the steamy intimate scenes, especially with Luke’s kraken form. I chuckled at the banter. I enjoyed the integrated secondary characters and meeting Luke’s family and I’m looking forward to more in this setting. This is one of my favourite books this year!
I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.
Kraken cove Second chance with a sea monster by Ami Wright ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌶🌶🌶💀 An absolute adorable small town, fated mate, Kraken human love story. These characters are so relatable with their insecurities, indecisiveness and everyday issues. Kraken Cove is a beautiful Australia beach town that I would love to visit. One summer evening in a quiet cove two very different people found there puzzle piece. However things never that simple. Mia is whisked away and Luke is left bearing the secret and loss. 10 years later a chance meeting they realised their passion for each other never dwindled. A beautiful love story, second chance at love romance filled a charming cinnamon roll mmc. Tropes: Fated Mates. One night of passion. Family drama. He falls first. Found family. Close proximity. Small town romance. He was he first. Kraken. Tentacles. Qoutes: If she was mine, I’d make sure she knew what a bloody treasure she is.
“See. You make me believe it too. You make me believe in myself. I still remember how good it felt when you complimented my art and invited me to the beach. I’m glad we met and I’m glad you’re back in my life. I don’t want to rush into anything, but you should know how amazing I think you are.”
“Now do you believe me? I’ve been waiting years. What’s a little longer when I’ve got you in my arms and I can tell you everything it means to me? It’s nothing. I’ll wait as long as it takes because the prize is worth it. You’re worth it, Mia. And when you’re ready, I’ll be here.”
Mia and Luke have a one night summer fling before meeting back up again years later. Althy this time Mia is engaged and Luke is fixing up her house.
Swoon -She accidentally puts on his sweater and he lets her keep it.
Dislikes -There's a disconnect between them confronting each other that they met years ago. -Was a little disappointed that the issue with her parents resolved way too easily. What info did her mother know about their summer fling?
Questions
-What made Luke change the first time?
-What exactly causes Mia to get back together with her ex after their break?
-What exactly happened with the lawsuit? Mia's dad was involved and he didn't find it weird that Margaret backed out?
-Was meeting up with the ex in the coffee shop really it? He was trying to become a higher up in her dad's firm. He didn't try anything further?
Final thoughts I thoroughly enjoyed this insta-love, fated mates, second chance, monster romance. Some parts towards the end of the book did not really wrap up for me and I had some questions. Just some minor loose ends I was really curious about. I also needed more justice need to be served towards the ex and Mia's parents. But this was a fun monster fated mates story! Cannot wait to find out what happens in the next book with the broody brother and his backstory!
Gleeful Goblin Review: This book does an incredible job of taking a romance trope that Hallmark has overused of girl meets first love in small town, moves to (or in this case is from the big city), the rat race and fake people don't make her happy, girl returns to small town and finds her first love all over again. But this book turns the trope on its ear a bit, in the best way. For one, there are monsters and tentacles. Two, the characters have way more depth to them than the typical Hallmark movie. Three, Hallmark won't give you sass and steam like this book does.
I love that we get to see how our main characters originally meet, following the "show, don't tell" rule for good storytelling. It's a brief time that we spend with them as youngsters but it's done beautifully. The rest of the story is one of the best second chance romances to sink into. It's warm, sweet, and full of unwavering support and devotion. No matter what or who is standing in the way of love for these two. At its core, this story is about getting comfortable with being your full self and understanding that the right people will love you for exactly who that is. 5/5 Stars
Another must read from Ami Wright. First off, I love Ami Wright and her style of writing. I will always commend her for her world building. She's so descriptive, it's like a 4D experience. You can feel the wind and smell the ocean, like you're really there! As for the story itself, I loved Mia and Luke! When they connected the first time, they were both young, inexperienced and dealing with personal issues. Now as adults, they able to navigate these issues easier. For Luke, it's revealing that he's a supe. He's such an amazing character- supportive, smart, caring, loving, and very hands on. He's exactly what Mia needs. She's never had anyone supportive. Her parents are more concerned about their public image, and her fiance (ex) isn't any better. Luckily she has a great best friend who tries to be there for her. Luke and Mia have beautiful chemistry that instantly reignites, no matter how much they try to fight it. I loved everything about this story! There is heart, steam, passion and even some hilarious scenes! And let's not forget the tentacles! It's a must read!
This was such a cute story! I loved Luke and Mia. They met 10 years ago for a brief moment during the summer but that’s all they had. Until they run into each other back in Karaken Cove. I did love Mia from the beginning. She’s not living her dreams and not really all that happy. Her fiancé is a piece of work and she’s just trying to find some happiness. I’m glad the breakup with Oliver happened fairly early on so that the rest of the book was about her and Luke. And Luke! Oh my heavens! We all deserve someone like Luke on our lives. He believes in her absolutely 100%. He knows she deserves to be told how amazing she is, because he thinks she is. He really sees her and just wants her to be happy and fulfilled. And shows her over and over again exactly how she deserves to be treated. He was amazing. These two have a lot to figure out before they get their happily ever after. But they get there by standing with each other and being willing to talk to one another. Loved it!!
I did receive an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
This is hands down one of the best cozy, spicy monster romances out there! I’m absolutely obsessed with Mia and Luke.
Ten years ago, they shared a night neither of them would ever forget—though Mia never imagined Luke would still remember her. But fate (and Oliver the absolute worst) brings her back to Kraken Cove, where she comes face to face with the first lover she never stopped dreaming about. Turns out, Luke has thought about her every single day since.
The chemistry between them crackles with tension, but what makes this second-chance romance truly magical is the tenderness, vulnerability, and deep connection they share. Every glance, every touch, every heated moment is laced with longing and care—exactly what this trope should be made of.
And you all know I live for the spice. The emotional depth of these characters makes it that much hotter! Trust me, you won’t be able to put this one down.
“You just fit. You fit me like I was supposed to know you all along. Like I’m meant to be here with you. Like something I’ve been looking for all my life.”
A beautiful, second chance story about the power of love and the joy of having a partner who totally supports and “gets” you. Luke and Mia meet on the cusp of adulthood but are separated. Years later, they meet again when he is renovating her parent’s home. But Mia is engaged to the perfect man - or is she? Luke is such an upstanding and swoon worthy hero. He doesn’t rush her, understands her needs but doesn’t push his own agenda until she is ready. Even an unforeseen twist is no match for these two - no lack of communication, self doubt, or high angst. Also the last sentence is wonderfully perfect!! I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
This book was such a vibe. Mia's life is a mess—cheating fiancé, canceled wedding, and a future she doesn't want. So she runs to her parents’ holiday home at Kraken Cove to escape. But here's the twist: her first love, Luke, is now a hot, literal sea monster.
This book is full of spice, sweetness, and the perfect second-chance romance. Luke is a total cinnamon roll—he's patient, caring, and just all-in for Mia. Mia's on her journey of self-discovery, learning how to accept love and feel valued. Their connection is everything, and the tension between them? Chef's kiss.
It's got that rom-com vibe with just the right amount of heat and heart. Not groundbreaking, but 100% fun, sweet, and a little bit steamy. If you’re into fated love, small towns, and krakens, you need to pick this up.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Oops, sorry, thought I had! 😊 As always, another great read from this wonderful author. I had the pleasure of reading this before it's published version and loved. Having spent many years visiting one of my besties in Aussie, it was great to see names of places I knew. 😊 Manly is a place I've shopped and enjoyed walking around the bays. Mia is engaged to a man who's really married to his job in her fathers firm. She's over seeing renovations to her future home and upon meeting the contractor, re ignites an old memory from their past. Luke is a Kraken. They re new their connection, slowly but surely, as events create new emotions. Didn't like the soon to be X and was annoyed at her parents attitude towards Luke. He has a brother that also isn't too happy, but with time and perseverance for all, everything works out. But you have to read to see! 😊 There is the heat 🌶🌶🌶, angst 😣, humour 🤣 and that great ending. 😍 Now we await grumpy Jack's story! 😁😍😍
This is the type of perfect second chance summer read that you hope for and somehow can't always find, yet here it is. I loved the scene setting whereby you got their first meeting and you could understand how it would not have left either of them. Of course fate intervens and they are separated but clearly fate is rather remorseful about that as they have a second chance offered to them. Luke is a veritable sweetheart and I just loved his family. Their support and kindness and their genuine wish for people to be happy. It showed in how Luke did all he could to demonstrate to Mia his feelings for her. As for Mia, she is also a product of her family. She has has any resilience knocked out of her, she feels unworthy and has no confidence in herself. You do see how Luke affects her though. Loved it!
Massive thanks to Ami Wright for sending me a digital copy; this is my honest review.
Review: I'm a total sucker for a well-written monster romance, but I'd never dabbled with a sea monster before reading Kraken Cove.
Mia and Luke's story is such a perfect blend of small-town, second-chance romance. These two characters completely respect each other, and it made my heart swell with how kind and compassionate they are towards each other’s families and friends.
It's so wholesome... but let's not forget the insanely hot, steamy, monster sex. I discovered exactly why tentacles can be so damn useful!
Kraken Cove is like finding a pizza with all your favourite toppings, the base and sauce you crave AND a secret stuffed crust. One slice just won't be enough!
Kraken Cove: Second Chance With The Sea Monster is part of the Mated to the Monster series. Each book is written by an amazing author and many lead into other series’. Kracken Cove is no exception. I definitely consider it a must to read this and then dive into Ami Wright’s new upcomming series. I cannot wait for Kracken Cove 2: Starting Over With The Sea Monster.
That said, Kraken Cove: Second Chance With The Sea Monster is super sweet and spicy. I loved the instant attraction, the bit of ex-relationship drama, the strong family and community bonds and support and oh yes, the tentacles! This was a fun and entertaining read and I am looking forward to getting to know the other Wilson brothers and more quirky characters in Kraken Cove!
I really wanted to like this but it was so basic and surface level. it was instalove that the author kept trying to draw out for as long as she could.
I know this was written originally as a weekly chapter incentive for her patreon and it shows. There were so many editing and continuity issues. In one chapter they would say one thing and then completely contradict it the next. She also randomly would add info about past events that did not show up in the event being mentioned. So many plot holes and issues. Sorry, but this is a big no for me.
Also, if you're going to write a book with tentacles, don't wait until the very end to do anything fun with them. That's the whole point of reading a monster book with a character who has tentacles.
Every woman wants a Luke, completely obsessed and would move mountains for his woman, knows she prefers Tea over Coffeeand knows she can do it by herself but never wants her to have to do anything alone. Mia does not fit in with her parents and their world of money and snobbery, she longs for a life where she can be free, but believes she has found her 'one' in Oliver, finally found someone she can build her life with... little does she know that when she crashes into her past life her future will change dramatically and shell end up living her dream life. 10/10 story with beautfully spicy scenes, Luke and Mia are perfect!!
4.5⭐️ I truly liked both MCs, found it to be an interesting town/world, and I adored the sweet and believable love story. It ended a bit abruptly, however, and because of that, several different story threads were wrapped up too quickly. That left me feeling a bit unsatisfied. I wanted to see Mia grow smarter and stronger as she and Luke got closer, but the outside drama always interrupted and took page space away from the love story, but without giving the reader a satisfying conclusion to said drama. I also REALLY wanted to see Oliver get even a little of what he deserved because he was such an asshole.

A cute second chance Monster romance! I fell so seamlessly into this storyline, It was so easy to read and flowed so well. Luke and Mia are so cute together from the time they meet on Mia's 18th birthday to 10 years later but Luke has a secret.. that nearly gets revealed when he gets wet. Luke was an absolute Cinnamon roll in the best way but boy did he have a dirty mouth in the bedroom. Mia was in a crossroads with her life but once she went back to Kraken Cove everything just seemed to feel more calm. I'm so excited to read Noah's book!
Ami Wright knows how to write a good romance. I never fail to get lost in the story within a few pages. A new setting for, I'm hoping, a new series? Set in a small seaside town, a second chance romance that is too cute for words. Luke is a kraken, and as a young man fell for a human called Mia when she used to stay in Kraken Cove for the holidays. Life cruelly separated them. Second chance love stories are one of my favs. The feelings people have burn back to life and so brightly. These pair are just so cute together, the fact they become friends first is just 🥰. Loved it.
🔸️Second chance romances are not my favourite ones, but when you get a guy like Luke you then you go for all possible chances! 😉 🔸️Luke is the most adorable kraken possible (a kind of mixture of cinnamon roll with golden retriver). Loving, understanding, caring and simply being there for his mate. 🔸️I would recommend this story for all ladies who crave an ultimately comforting and safe book boyfriend.
