Kiddo (11) and I really enjoyed learning about the megafauna of past and present. Kiddo was surprised that dinosaurs aren't covered, although they cover reptiles, mammals, birds, fish, snakes, etc.
There was a lot of great information broken down into digestible chunks, and the illustrations were gorgeous. We also really appreciated the size comparison charts of the past and current megafauna of each type.
The one thing I struggled with was the scientific names were very tiny and the italic font used was difficult to read. I had a hard time distinguishing between "c" and "a" and "o" a lot of the time. There were also a few mistakes in the scientific names which didn't help.

Gigantisch gut - detailreich illustrierte Tiergiganten von gestern und heute
Das Erste, das uns ehrlicherweise an "MEGA. Faszinierende Giganten von gestern und heute" von dem Autor Jules Howard angesprochen hat, war dieses mega Cover vom Illustrator Gavin Scott. Die Tiere sind so detailreich gezeichnet, dass man von den Augen bis zu den kleinsten Hautfalten oder dem Fellmuster alles ganz genau erkennen kann.
Auch das Thema des Buches hat meine Kinder und mich sofort angesprochen: gigantische Tiere. Wer dabei zunächst an Dinosaurier denkt, liegt falsch, denn die werden nur ganz kurz zu Beginn erwähnt. Es geht vor allem um große Tierarten, die heute noch existieren und ihre bereits ausgestorbenen Verwandten wie Säbelzahnkatzen, Europäische Waldelefanten oder Elefantenvögel.
Die Bilder zu den vielen verschiedenen Tieren haben uns alle sehr gut gefallen. Die Liebe zum Detail erkennt man in jeder Illustration - sei es durch die tollen Landschaftshintergründe, die stechenden Blicke, fliehende Beutetiere oder auch den süßen Nachwuchs.
Auch der Aufbau des Buches hat uns überzeugt. Er ist sehr leicht verständlich und durch das Inhaltsverzeichnis findet man sich gut zurecht. Nach einer kurzen Einleitung werden Tiere aus verschiedenen Klassen (Säugetiere, Vögel, Reptilien, Fische, Mollusken also Weichtiere) vorgestellt.
Zuerst wird dabei das größte ausgestorbene Tier zum Beispiel ein Megacamelus für die Paarhufer betrachtet; danach die größten heutigen Paarhufer wie beispielsweise Giraffen und Flusspferde. Besonders interessant ist es, anschließend zu lesen, welche Bedeutung diese Tiere für ihre Umwelt haben. So sind oft die Ausscheidungen der Megatiere die Grundlage für neues Leben.
Außerdem fanden wir es sehr spannend zu erfahren, warum bestimmte Tiere ausgestorben sind - leider waren oft die Menschen dafür verantwortlich. Deshalb wird immer wieder betont, wie wichtig der Schutz der Lebensräume und Tiere ist. Auch heute droht das Aussterben vieler Tierarten, dabei gibt es viele kleine und große Dinge, die jede und jeder zum Schutz der Tiere tun kann.
Die Sachtexte mit den vielen Informationen lassen sich sehr gut (vor-)lesen und sind bereits für Kinder im Grundschulalter gut verständlich. Man kann dabei problemlos von Tier zu Tier springen oder sich mit jüngeren Kindern auch erstmal nur die Bilder anschauen und kurze Abschnitte lesen. Wir werden das Buch mit Sicherheit noch einige Male zum Schmökern hervorholen und dann immer wieder feststellen, wie spannend doch die Tierwelt der Erde ist.

Wow! This was such an informative book about megafauna - . It included information from long ago, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Each animal section told of the largest extinct animal that once existed and then explained the smaller versions of the animals we see today. I enjoyed the comparison charts in each section so you could visually see the size difference. It helped me understand how large some of these animals were that once lived on the Earth. After each animal, there is information about how their size contributes to how the change the land around them. 5 animal types were represented with different species in each section. At the end of each section, there was more information given about the animal types. Fun facts were sprinkled throughout the book. This book contains a. lot of information. It's definitely not a book you would read in one sitting. It would be one you would read in chunks or skip around and read the sections that interest you the most. The only issue I could see with this book is sometimes the font is a bit small. I had to zoom in to read it. I'm hoping the actual physical book is big enough that this isn't an issue. The illustrations were detailed and represented each animal well. They were colorful, bold, and interesting. Overall, I think this would be a wonderful book for any children's library. I know it will be a wonderful addition to my classroom library!

Kun tehdään kirja megafaunasta, sitä ei voi tehdä pienesti. Niinpä Mega : Maailman mahtavimmat eläimet on isokoinen kirja itsessään. Mikäpä siinä! Iso koko tekee oikeutta kuvitukselle, ja kun kirjan kuvittajana on Gavin Scott, tietää että laadukasta kuvitusta on luvassa, sen verran monessa kirjassa Scott on jo taitojaan eläinten kuvittajana esitellyt.
Megafauna on kreikan ja latinan sekoitus: mega on kreikaksi suuri ja fauna latinaksi eläinkunta. Yleisesti megafaunan rajana pidetään sataa paunaa eli noin 45 kiloa. Suuren koiran koko ei tunnu kovin isolta, kun ajattelee todella valtavia eläimiä, mutta jo sen kokoisia eläimiä on rajallisesti.
Kirja esittelee eläinryhmä kerrallaan suurimpia sukupuuttoon kuolleita lajeja, nykyajan suurimpia vastaavia eläimiä ja eläinten ominaispiirteitä. Esimerkiksi nisäkkäistä aloitetaan norsuilla, joista esitellään esihistoriallinen aasialainen metsänorsu, sitten nykyiset norsulajit ja kolmannella aukeamalla vielä kerrotaan siitä, miten norsut muokkaavat ympäristöään.
Kirjassa on yli 120 sivua, eli erilaisia eläimiä käydään läpi paljon: nisäkkäät, linnut, matelijat, kalat ja nilviäiset. Melkein puolet kirjasta menee nisäkkäiden parissa. Dinosaurukset ohitetaan yhdellä aukeamalla; pääpaino on eläimissä, joita esiintyy maailmassa edelleenkin. Se on oikein hyvä: dinosauruskirjoja on kyllä tarpeeksi muutenkin.
Gavin Scottin kuvitus on todella hienoa, joten sitä katselee ilokseen. Jules Howardin tekstissä Pia Korpisaaren suomennoksena ei ole mottimista paria käännöslipsahdusta lukuunottamatta. Howardilla on akateeminen tausta eläintieteissä ja paljon kokemusta luovasta kirjoittamisesta: Mega on helppolukuinen kirja, josta voi oppia paljon uutta erilaisista eläimistä.

MEGA is a fantastic book for learning about megafauna—both the species alive today and those from the past. I’ve always assumed that the biggest animals only existed long ago and that nothing living now comes close to their size. But this book quickly proves that wrong. In many groups of animals, the largest species are actually the ones still alive today, which I found absolutely fascinating.
There is so much information packed into this book, far more than I expected when I first opened it, yet it never feels overwhelming. The writing is clear, accessible, and not overly scientific. Most of the information is presented in small, digestible sections that wrap around the gorgeous illustrations of the animals being discussed. That layout makes it incredibly easy—and enjoyable—to read.
Right now I’m looking at the section on marsupials, and it explains how these animals, both past and present, function within their ecosystems and what benefits they provide. Each category also includes a chart comparing the relative sizes of extinct and extant species, which I thought was especially interesting.
As someone who loves animals, I was genuinely surprised by some of the facts in this book. I had no idea how recently some of these truly large creatures were alive before human activity contributed to their extinction.
MEGA would be a fantastic addition to any middle-grade library, classroom, or home collection. And if you do put it on your child’s bookshelf, make sure you flip through it yourself—you’re almost guaranteed to learn something new.

Einfach MEGA
Der Titel ist Programm: „MEGA. Faszinierende Giganten von gestern und heute“ von Jules Howard und Gavin Scott (Illustrator) hat meine Kinder total begeistert. Erstmal passt alleine schon die Größe des Buches perfekt zum Titel. Es ist richtig groß und schwer und lädt zum Stöbern ein. Dass sich im Umschlag dann auch noch ein riesiges Poster versteckt, ist eine schön Überraschung! Auch die Umsetzung konnte uns überzeugen. Endlich mal ein Buch, dass sich nicht nur mit Dinosauriern beschäftigt, sondern auch viele andere Giganten ins Spotlight rückt.
Besonders beeindruckend finde ich die wunderschönen Illustrationen in Wasserfarbenoptik, durch die wirklich jede einzelne Seite bunt und detailreich gestaltet ist. Es ist kein Buch, dass man von vorne bis hinten durchliest. Meine Kinder (5 und 8) blättern immer wieder selbstständig darin und lesen (oder lassen sich vorlesen) dann die Seiten, die gerade interessieren. Sie finden vor allem den Vergleich der ausgestorbenen Giganten und heute noch lebenden größten Verwandten interessant.
Schön finde ich auch, dass am Ende des Buches noch einmal konkret die Bedrohung der Artenvielfalt durch den Klimawandel benannt wird, aber es auch konkrete Handlungsempfehlungen gibt, wie jede*r zum Schutz der Tiere beitragen kann. Ich kann dieses Buch allen die ein schönes Wissensbuch für Kinder suchen sehr empfehlen und werde es auch selbst noch einmal zu Weihnachten verschenken! Einfach MEGA!

MEGA Sachbuch mit Umweltschutz-Botschaft
"Mega" ist ein richtig tolles Sachbuch mit beeindruckenden Illustrationen und viel spannendem Sachwissen.
Nicht nur die Inhalte sind MEGA: auch das Format ist riesengroß und kommt (wenn geliefert) in einem noch größeren Umschlag. Das Cover sieht großartig aus und der Schutzumschlag lässt sich zu einem großen Poster auffalten, was sehr besonders ist.
Die Illustrationen sind wunderschön. Ich muss gestehen, dass ich nicht 100% überzeugt war, als ich mir die Leseprobe angeschaut habe. Aber das Buch ist wirklich herausragend und der Zeichenstil hat was wildes an sich, was irgendwie absolut zur Artenschutz-Botschaft passt.
Die Texte sind kurz, prägnant und eindrucksvoll. Besonders gefallen mir die Abschnitte, in denen die Rollen der Tiere erklärt wird.
Die grundlegende Botschaft ist der Artenschtz, doch die wird so raffiniert vermittelt (durch den Kontrast zwischen ausgestorben und lebende Arten), dass man nie das Gefühl hat, belehrt zu werden.
Am eine gibt es ein paar Seiten über Umweltschutz und darüber, was man im Alltag machen kann.

Another essential book for our animal shelf, will 100% be purchasing the hardcover version as soon as it comes out! If you love gorgeous and engaging non-fiction picture books then definitely check this one out.
The information is presented in easily digestible chunks. There's roughly a paragraph of information for each section (every left page, or so) and then a few more bite-sized snippets along with each animal illustrated. This makes the book really easy to read to the kids or just peruse - we LOVE non-fiction picture books that allow us to read like a story OR dive a little deeper depending on our mood.
The illustrations are beautiful. Easy to identify all of the animals in the book but a watercolor vibe to everything which makes the pages just so relaxing to page through. My kids absolutely loved looking at all of the illustrations and identifying each animal (and asking me to read the facts about them).

The illustrations are beautiful. Easy to identify all of the animals in the book but a watercolor vibe to everything which makes the pages just so relaxing to page through. My kids absolutely loved looking at all of the illustrations and identifying each animal (and asking me to read the facts about them).

Das Kinderbuch „MEGA“ von Jules Howard und Gavin Scott ist ein informatives Bilderbuch, in welchem die großen Tiere, die die Erde in verschiedenen Zeitaltern bewohnt haben.
Das Buch hat ein Format von 30 x 30cm und gehört daher definitiv zu den größeren Bilderbüchern.
Die Illustrationen sind toll gemacht und durch das Format des Buches wirken sie noch einmal imposanter. Die Augen der Tiere finde ich allerdings etwas gruselig, aber das ist Ansichtssache .
Die Texte in diesem Buch sind sehr informativ. Man bekommt die wichtigsten Fakten zu den verschiedenen Tiere und sie werden auch im Größenvergleich gezeigt.
Das Buch ist ein Hardcover mit einem Wendecover, dass auch als Poster verwendet werden kann.

Ich bin wirklich sehr positiv überrascht von diesem Buch. Ich hatte mir die Illustrationen aufgrund des Covers eher düster vorgestellt. Aber bei genauerem hinsehen erkennt man, sie sind wirklich schön und fröhlich. Der Einband war mein besonderes Highlight, denn ich kenne bisher kein Buch bei dem sich dieser zu einem beidseitigen Poster umfunktionieren lässt. Der Aufbau der Kapitel ist sehr übersichtlich und der Inhalt war auch für mich als Erwachsenen faszinierend. Der Schreibstil ist informativ und definitiv packend. Einmal in das Buch eingetaucht, kann man es nur sehr schwer wieder weg legen. Es werden die größten Tiere unserer Erde behandelt. Besonders gelungen finde ich den Wechsel zwischen noch vorkommenden Lebewesen und bereits ausgestorbenen Tierarten. Es gibt so vieles spannendes über die Tiere auf unserem Planeten zu erfahren und zu lesen. Ein wirklich schönes Buch bei dem die wirklich großen Tierarten im Mittelpunkt stehen.

This book is enormous, which suits its presentation of enormous animals present and past. The set up is interesting as the book creators section off various animals into three areas: biggest extinct, biggest today, and mega-fauna at work. Each area gives a snapshot of the animals in time, complete with interesting facts about their diet, their habitat, and some possibilities of how they existed in earlier times. Perusetus Colossus, for example, is an ancient whale whose “facts” were gathered from a single skeleton found in Peru.
Each section is a huge, two-page spread with large illustrations of the animal and its habitat overlayed with informational text. Illustrations are precise, detailed, and colorful. This will become a welcome addition to any nature-loving kid's bookshelf. The fascination about animals and especially giant extinct animals is thoroughly explored in this 128-page, colorful book. Although dinosaurs are not included, there are many reptiles, mammals, birds, and fish that are featured in each chapter. The illustrations and graphs showing how giant these animals were compared to modern specimens were great. I'd recommend this title to parents and children who love nature and exploring wildlife, as well as kids who love crazy animal books. The pages are crowded with illustrations and text, which might overwhelm some readers, but passionate kids and parents will dig in and explore what this book has to offer. I want to own a physical copy of this book! It is perfect for my now 6-year-old and will still grow with him. The drawings are beautiful and engaging with vibrant but soft colors that don't overwhelm the senses. The information is in little snippets that you can look at but not feel like you have to read all at once. The information is so interesting, and my 6-year-old just wants to know more. For a kid's informational e-book its actually really well done and easy to read but I still think a book like this deserves to be loved in its full physical glory.

This is a very good reference book for young readers (I would say upper elementary through middle grades, ages 9-12+).
Things I loved:
* The book is beautifully illustrated, with lots of detail and color.
* Good age-appropriate use of scientific terminology, including Latin binomial scientific names for species.
* Snippets of important aspects of the ecology & evolution of each group -- in particular, as an evolutionary biologist I really appreciated the mention of the homology of the limb bones in aquatic mammals and land mammals due to common ancestry.
Things that could be better:
* Some of the text is very, very small, even in full-screen mode reading in a web browser on my laptop. Hopefully it's better in the physical book.
* For a book with such extensive scientific details and language (including Latin scientific names), it's jarring to also see the unscientific terms "cold-blooded" and "warm-blooded" used instead of ecto-/endothermic, which could've been defined just like other scientific terms used.
* The section titled "Monkeys and Apes" only showcases the great apes (family Hominidae), which can be misleading, as the general public often confuses these two taxonomically different groups of primates.
* No amphibian section??? :(

A bog book with facts about the largest animals in the world. Abit too much small text foe me but I think kids who like BIG animals and fun facts will like.
