*** You do not need to have read the first 4 books in the series to enjoy Book 5.
Jerry Mansko, a fun-loving Paramedic/Firefighter is in physical therapy for a major injury to his leg. His therapist, Sara Acosta, fascinates him from the first time he sees her. But there's something unavailable and even a little dark about Sara. When she walks out on a date with him he checks her apartment to ensure she's OK. But Sara's not there ... and the words written on the walls in blood indicate a mystery far beyond his abilities to solve. Can Jerry find Sara and convince her to let him in to her life?
There were so many little common knowledge mistakes in the first four books, but I sort of ignored them. The dialogue was stilted and stupid, but I sort of ignored it. Then, there was the absolute burst from happiness for pages and pages that needed to be skipped on the audiobook. Kristen Ashley is the only romance author who can make me want to read how happy the couple is. She somehow does it without being nauseatingly sweet. And this was definitely not even in the same planet.
What finally made me stop reading the series in book five and swear to never ever pick up anything by this author? It's a pet peeve of mine when the author does not do research about the topic they are writing about and make really stupid mistakes, but the ones about political speeches, difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist and police procedure etc. although annoying were relatively easy to ignore.
Then, we come to this book. Brace yourself folks, apparently "Egyptian" is now a new language, separate from Arabic! Seriously, don't you have to have a fifth grade education to write books. WTF? Our heroine, who is an ex-spy (apparently US was running a child-spy program reminiscent of Cold War Russia) speaks seven languages. They are “English, Egyptian, Arabic, Spanish, French, Italian, and Farsi."
Dear Author, despite pronunciation differences, Arabic is still the language of the country of Egypt. It does not even qualify to be a separate dialect. Look it up. I guess one should be grateful that you know the language they speak in Iran is Farsi and not Iranian. And just like that, I am done with this author.
This is a great KU Library read and addition to the Edge of the Heat series. Because of the action and suspense, it is my favorite of the books in the series so far. It is definitely a 5 star read for me, and I can't wait to get into book six.
Romance trope: romantic suspense Series: Edge of the Heat Length: 350 pages
Plot: Jerry no longer needs physical therapy, so he can finally ask out his hot physical therapist, Sara. She's been reluctant so far, but now the last barrier is out of the way and she agrees to go to his friends' double wedding. She takes off before the reception is done, though, and he can't find her anywhere. He's worried that something's wrong. He's right. Sara has a lot of work ahead of her to stay safe and expose the bad guys. Jerry just might be able to help.
Commentary: I really didn't think she'd go through with drugging him! Glad he's the forgiving type. She was very resourceful and exactly the kind of person you'd want around just in case of emergency. I think Jerry is actually the softer one of the couple and I get the feeling he doesn't mind too much. There were some errors in this book and the backstory for our spy is far-fetched (I hope! It's giving USSR sleeper agent vibes!). Jerry's not my favorite hero, but this book still advanced the overall series plot.
Jerry is smitten with Sarah. He asks her to accompany him to Vivian/Hawk and Emma/Craig's wedding. After they are in attendance suddenly Sarah has disappeared. Jerry is upset and goes to Sarah's apartment to find out if everything is okay. It definitely is not OKAY. Sarah's apartment has been destroyed. Now Jerry is on a mission trying to locate Sarah. Jerry is convinced that Sarah is in serious danger, perhaps she has been kidnapped and being held hostage somewhere.
Jerry asks way to many questions to the lead cop in charge of the investigation. And now that cop feels that Jerry is in the way and obstructing justice. Now Jerry is in trouble with the police. Jerry decides after some investigation that Sarah seems to have left of her own free will. Jerry now needs to get out of town and lay low.
***SPOILER***
While in Vegas Sarah finds Jerry and the trouble starts NOW. Sarah realizes she has made a terrible mistake thinking Jerry was anything but a firefighter that cares for her and now they are both on the run from some really powerful and bad people. Not wanting to put Craig and Emma's life in danger they try to solve the problem on their own but do need a little help from some FBI friends.
Jerry learns the truth of Sarah's past and Sarah learns that NORMAL might be possible for her after all.
First Jerry says he committed a crime when he was 18. Then says to himself he'd be telling the story for the first time in 18 years, while telling the story he says he was 16 and Craig says so this was 15 years ago........ geezus While telling his story, he was 14 when his mom left and he never called the cops fearing they'd put his dad in a home. And that her co workers told him she had a boyfriend. A few chapters later he was 16 and he did call the cops. And her co workers wouldn't tell him anything. And the past two books the author has been saying Jerry and Emma are fire fighters, which they are not. This story is longer than the others and I've already noticed with this author is that when she makes her stories longer she ends up with inconsistencies and a lot of unnecessary words. Plot lines are cool but I'm too bored
By: Lisa Ladew Narrated by: Anya West Series: Edge of the Heat, Book 5 Length: 10 hrs and 43 mins
I listened to this book at 1.50x I did have a problem with the big deep breath taken before every sentence. It would have been nice if it was edited out. Very distracting .
Each book gets better
Surprisingly good. Couldn't put down. Very much going on. Firefighting, FBI involved, crooked cops. EMT. doctors, politics.
Looking forward to book 6
Vocal artist Anya West did a really good job being it to life. But I had to listen to it at 1.40x or 1.50x to make it more exciting.
This Jerry seams so different from how he was portrayed in the first four books. I do get that he's gone through trauma and others have noticed a change too, but it felt too forced. Besides that- loved Jerry and Sara (or is it Melissa?). Really feel that they should talk that out- but that's just me. Once again high connection and lots of coincidences, but overall like these guys better than Emma at the beginning.
Still loving this series. Any series that can hold a reader's attention for this long (five books in there days) is worth a try for those of you that haven't sampled this author yet.
I just started reading books by this author because I wanted to read books that were in a series. I read the first four books in the Unauthorized series. Now, maybe I should have read the Edge of the Heat (Westwood Harbor Corruption) series first because it is the beginning of everything that is going on now. I understand a lot about how the main characters met and started making a life together. This is a GREAT series and I am on Westwood Harbor Corruption #6. I can't say to much about the books because it would give a lot away, but all I can say is read the series. It starts out slow, but it picks up fast and it really is a great read.
What a refreshing setting this book has. I've liked Jerry since the book one, and was looking forward to his story, and this didn't disappoint. Jerry is fun, easy going guy. And when Sara is in trouble, Jerry tries his best to save her, rescue her, even though Jerry feels he's way over his head with the mission. Without giving away anything on the plot, that is full of surprises, twists and turns, the man hunt in the story is grueling. The suspense, tension of the danger is constant, and will keep you absorbed in the story. The attraction, love, Sara and Jerry have for each other is so sweet and endearing. The way Jerry fights for their relationship made me want to cheer. The story is interesting, and like said, with so many new aspects in it from chapter to chapter, it is hard to say much, without giving something away and spoiling the element of surprise. But this whole series is something that has just gotten better by each book, and I can warmly recommend it to all fans of romantic suspense! Four spoons for this story and the whole series!!
Jerry is hunting for Sara. He needs to know she is okay. She went to his best friends' wedding with him, but disappeared into the night. He found her apartment and discovered blood everywhere. The police are not taking him serious - there's no body, no one in the hospital that might have come from here. He ends up making an enemy of Detective Gagne. He goes on vacation to Vegas and decides he has to let her go...relax, and let her go. She obviously didn't want him like he wanted her, right?
Sara finds him, first. Then the roller coaster ride of trying to survive begins. They are captured and fight to escape. He finds out Sara is much more than he ever would have guessed. Craig and Emma cut short their honeymoon and start tracking Jerry down. Hawk and Vivian are coming back, too. Somebody needs to save both Jerry and Sara...as they are trekking across the desert heading back to Vegas.
Hearts unfold and dreams look like they could, maybe, come true....
I wasn’t sure what this book was going to entail, all I knew what that Jerry’s date to Emma’s and Vivian’s wedding had disappeared and that both Emma and Vivian had just received some life changing news. So as you could tell from that ending it was going to be such an interesting follow on, however what happens in this book is nothing that I expected. We learn that Jerry’s date Sara has such a hidden agenda but little does Jerry realise that sooner or later the secret that she is hiding he will be brought into it no matter what. This is when Jerry realises that his life won’t be the same for a while, but honestly a lot happens in this book and it will leave you thinking what exactly is happening.
Don’t get me wrong I loved this series but I did find myself at times having to put the book down because I needed a bit of a break from it. Other than that I can’t find anything else that I didn’t think worked. Honestly I can’t wait to see how everything turns out. However the end of this book will leave you pretty surprised.
So glad to see Jerry get his own book in this series. Throughout all the other books, Jerry was there anytime his friends needed him so it was nice that he got the benefit of friendship this time. Book 4 ended with Jerry finding his girlfriend's apartment coated in blood with no idea what had happened to Sara. Turns out Sara has a bit of a past to overcome and has decided not to risk Jerry in her problems. Despite her best intentions, Jerry does get involved and now needs his friends more than ever. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one featuring Emma and Vivian's lost brother. One thing that I really appreciated is how the author continues to bring in the old characters as part of the story, keeping it as one ongoing story.
Jerry and Sara's story was full of everything! Sara is a kick butt character., Talk about a strong female character, she is that and much more! We get to see Jerry fall hopelessly in love in this book. We've met Jerry previously in the other books as he is Emma's best friend and helped to try to keep her safe from Norman, getting hurt in the process. Sara is undercover as a physical therapist, until she has to leave. Sara and Jerry have chemistry that is off the charts, but she knows that she isn't the kind of person who can ever have a normal life. Jerry will stop at nothing to save her and wants her at any cost. I loved watching Jerry try to protect such a strong woman. I loved that he didn't give up on her. Lots of action too. Great story!
Another mesmerizing novel....Who knew that the one woman that Jerry fell in love with would turned his world upside down.....Meeting Sara was the best thing to happen to Jerry, sure the former was scared to get too close to the latter because of her past but Jerry showed Sara that her past didn't make her unlovable on the contrary it just made him love her more.....Amidst chaos, Jerry and Sara fell in love when all was said and done, Sara was ready to walk away from Jerry but the latter fought for the woman he loves....Jerry was able to break down the walls Sara built around her heart....Magnificent job by Lisa Ladew!
I've read the first four books in this series and immediately started this one. I've now been "reading" it for about four months. I've read at least eight books since I've started this one. I seem to have no real interest in these characters or their stories. I liked Jerry in the first books as a side character, but as a main character I'm not finding him compelling. Sarah's backstory is a stretch. I'll finish the book eventually and update my review when I do.
I finally gave up on this book. I don't usually do that but there are too many other books I want to read.
Another great book by Lisa Ladew! I love this series. I cannot wait to start book 6. This might be my favorite of the series so far. I was hesitant to read Jerry's love story. While I adored Jerry in the previous books, I felt more of a brotherish love for him. I didn't know how I would respond to reading the steamy scenes with him in them. And admittingly they did not do as much for me as the previous book, I still enjoyed the book. Sara was a badass. Pure and simple. Loved her.
A wonderful read. I really enjoyed following Jerry and seeing things through his eyes.
I love Jerry's character; he's sweet, lovable, funny and down right determined to never give up. However, Sarah's character, she was more on the annoying side. It was constant riddles and secrecy with her. I understand she supposed to have her guard up and whatnot, but even when you were reading through her perspective it was irritating.
I love Jerry! He is so sweet and genuine. I really like Sarah as well. She always had Jerry's best interests in mind throughout this book. The action was a little too much for me; otherwise it would have been a five all the way. I cannot wait for the next book though. I need my fix of these characters.
OMG ! Loved this book. I have read the other four but this one is my favorite by far. Jerry has always had my heart and I'm so happy he has found his. I loved learning about Sara and her past. How she thinks too. She is one kick ass gal! Im going to read the next installment in the series. I recommend this book to everyone! Great Great read.☺
I skimmed most of the book though. For some reason, Jerry's story didn't really interest me. Throughout the other books, he was a strong friend and a great help. In this one, he came of as whinny and obsession. I get he was worried for Sara, but idk...I just didn't really like him much in this. My rating is based on the plot, supporting characters as well as Sara.
It starts out slow, I had a hard time at first. It had very little of people you came to enjoy in the first four books. It gets better about four chapters in and just keeps going. Loved the ending. Worth the read!!!!
Kept me in the edge of my seat. Was good to read a bit more about Jerry. Even though u don't need to read book 1 to 4 think it still helps to have read them before reading 5 so u know what is going on and who is who in the book
