Sometimes the second volume can carry a little too much by way of expectations, I guess. I still enjoy this manga, but I think its first volume was overall stronger in terms of its character development.

Now, I like Shiho a lot as the main character still. She’s got a moral high horse that she is more than happy to sit on and look dismissively down from, but she’s learning that life isn’t so cut and dry in that respect.

Making a prickly character your star and having them make for a good lead is a tricky balancing act and I think that’s one of this story’s main strengths. She learns not to be so close-minded and it’s a sweet journey that doesn’t de-fang her.

Most of the first part of this volume is spent introducing Moeka, who is a member of the university club that has drawn all our cast together, but hates cosplay for not being original.

Based on the mangaka’s notes, my inclination is that their goal is to tackle all sorts of cosplay, from the typical to those based on original characters. The latter is the type that Moeka favours, which puts her at odds with Shiho and Kanon.

Moeka’s arc, and Shiho’s arc within that arc, aren’t bad, but it does feel like a long digression when Kanon and Shiho are really the pairing that are the big draw. Seeing Moeka’s true passion and the middle ground she reaches with Shiho, and their frenemy energy, is not bad.

The problem is that nothing’s really done with Moeka after the fact and she fades into the background. It’s not like I want this to be yet another harem story, but they could have done anything else with her after going that hard on her introduction.

The real meat comes with the beach house sequence, which eschews the beach itself in favour of having Shiho learning photography to help Kanon get together a series of original character poses for a DVD. Naturally, Shiho cannot quite escape with such passive participation.

I find the ‘explicit content’ warning on this hilarious because there is exactly zero nudity or sex. Yes, Kanon makes some pretty frisky poses and indicates where a vagina is, in case you didn’t know or something, but that’s it.

Shiho’s default position might be ‘frenemy’ for everybody she knows, but there’s no question that she and Kanon have a little more simmering beneath that label. Even amidst the usual tormenting of Shiho, there’s a little more affection there.

It’s nice to see Shiho’s attitude changing a little too; she is still trying to keep Kanon from just becoming a pin-up girl, but she’s getting a little more understanding on where sexy cosplay fits in their world and where Kanon draws her own lines.

It’s good, but not as good as before. I do like this series, but I felt the ‘Shiho to the rescue’ part at the end was a bit of a retread and the whole kidnapping plot that we leave off with is absolutely too wacky by half for where we’ve come from. Combined with the Moeka arc that doesn’t seem to quite fit, it didn’t gel as much as I wanted.

3.5 stars - enjoyed just slightly less than before, but this is one of those series where I’m not reading anything quite like it and I rather enjoy the novelty as well as the plot.
