No one dreams of moving out and going to school while living in their car, but it’s the only way to get out from under my mother’s thumb. She wants to control me, mold me into being the perfect little omega, even at the cost of my own mind.
I just want to be myself, learn who I am without her influence. It’s not a phase, and I’m not being selfish, despite what she thinks of me.
The only draw back to this is how cold it is in Minneapolis. I’m working so much between work and school, maybe my car heater will hold out long enough so that I don’t freeze to death.
Things are grim, until I run into my step father and his son. I haven’t seen them in years, what are the odds that they’re my scent matches as well?
This is a dark, why choose omegaverse standalone set in the Unhingedverse universe. The twists and turns will have you throwing things.
DNF at 37% I just can't! First one of the alphas learns the FMC is his scent match and hours later has a different female on her knees for him so......great start a cheater. Then she's taken from them by mommy dearest and it take months! months for her to get "out" and her 3rd Alpha just watches all the sick shit happen to her? I'm out! Since when are Alphas such wimps I just can't!

Five stars. I Screamed. I Raged. I Sobbed. I Cackled. I am not okay but I loved every second of it.
Ours Later by Jenn Bullard took my heart, chewed it up, set it on fire, and then kissed the ashes. And let’s be honest, she will likely do it again in the future and I’d thank her for it.
The story kicks off with Nina in a tree - it’s a cute scene and sets the tone for the story. Don’t worry, while this is a “forbidden” romance, nothing uncomfy happens here. The second time we meet Nina, she is essentially on the run—she escaped her khunt of a mother and is living out of her car and despite it all, she is still fighting to survive - trying to take control of her life. And when she “meets” two of her scent matches, they are the last people she would expect her ex-stepfather and stepbrother. And y’all these two are obsessed, unhinged, and feral for her in a way that made me kick my feet. Sue me, I like my MMCs a little dark and twisty.
I would like to tell you that the book ends here and its sunshines and rainbows but if you are a Jenn Bullard fan, you already know her characters have to weeerrrk for their happy endings.
I am not spoiling anything, I just want you to know that the journey to reuniting with her Pack is heavy y’all. It is going to be dark times and these characters are going to hurt. There is also a moment with scent match #3 and good lord, it hits you in the feels. The pain that Nina (and really her pack) experiences is heartbreaking… and her story is going to make your blood boil. It is going to hurt. You will not be happy. And maybe you will want to throw your kindle and rage buuuuuuut don’t. Or maybe do but just a little. Okay, dont throw it. If you do, Jenn nor I can be blamed.
While this book is daaark, there were some bright spots who put a smile on my face. We meet some new packs who Nina had s forced to court and while that is absolute shit, I loved them all. I want nothing but the best things for them and I cannot wait to see their stories unfold. They deserve the world. You are going to give them the world, right Jenn?
And Nina’s mom? Let’s just say… watching that creatin get what she deserved was so fecking satisfying and it sorta made all the pain worth it. Okay, thats a lie. But we need something to make us feel better and this was a start.
This book is messy, emotional, and healing in ways you won’t expect. If you’re into obsessive alphas, survival, vengeance, trauma, and stories that rip your heart out (and then heal them)—Ours Later is for you.
I was so not ready. 😮💨 I knew it was dark omegaverse going in but holy hell this one pushed past my comfort zone real quick. The premise had me hooked but it ended up being a bit too intense for me and I ended up DNF’ing. If you’re into heavy taboo and seriously unhinged vibes, you might love it … but yeah it’s not for the faint of heart.
I grabbed this one based off a recommendation that these alphas were very alpha, super possessive, and heavy handed. The blurb sounded good and it has been a while since I have read an OV so I was pretty excited but this was so, so bad. It started off good-the college scenes were entertaining, all the stuff with the h sleeping in her car and the Hs being horrified at the situation she is in was great! They were very heavy handed in the beginning and that was super fun. I didn’t really understand why the stepbrother didn’t recognize the h even though it had only been four years since he had seen her but whatever lol. I guess those pink highlights really changed her appearance.
Things went bad really fast though. Like so fast. This ended up being a thing the whole book—the story just moving way too quickly into something else. It was all over the place. The hs mom comes in a takes her to a reprogramming center and while the guys do try to get her back this whole bit just took way too long. There was no actual relationship development here. They are scent matched so it was very insta, then they’re separated, then it’s all insta again. If any of this was in the blurb I wouldn’t have picked it up. I’m still wondering where all these twists and turns the author promised us are.
There was way too many POV flips and the whole story was told to us instead of showing us and letting us really experience things.
DNF at 70%. This was a tough read. Reading about any kind of prolonged torture and romance in the same book will always be a fine line for me. Even if Nina was somewhat alright to pursue romance with her mates, I wasn't lol. I was still too emotionally scarred from that experience and found it hard to believe that she was anything more than as shell of a human being after the institution. Yes, she largely was, but she seemed to relax and 'find herself' almost too quickly for my liking as soon as she got out from under her mother's thumb. The whole stepbrother/stepfather taboo thing was also negated as soon as she had her memories erased lol. I do agree that it seemed very coercive at the start with how their relationship was formed (especially as she was an inexperienced virgin)- yet another case of thank fuck she's attracted to him because if she wasn't he should be in prison for these advances- but I liked the contrast to when they get her back and it went from needing to have her submissive and under their control to needing her in any way possible, even if that meant they were the ones on their knees. The other packs were all adorable and very wholesome side characters. In the end, after all of the torture, I just wasn't in it for the romance anymore and think realistically she probably wouldn't have been capable of it either. It's a fine line that was crossed for me. 4/10.
It is really really hard to do the amnesia trope well. Jenn absolutely killed it in this book, though. Honestly the way this book started— with a happy, sassy down on her luck Omega busying her ass to get through college and meeting her Step brother and Step Father (they’d divorced her mom a WHILE back and she hadn’t seen them since she was like 10 or something…) at the college she had run to to escape her mother. Then finding out she was their scent match and going through all these hot AF Dom Teacher/Student omegaverse moments
AND THEN HER PSYCHO MOM COMES IN AND RUINS THE WORLD
Honestly this book took such a turn. I was not expecting it but i was FUCKING HERE FOR IT.
Honesty there’s probably something wrong with me because i looooveee when my Heroines are totally beat down and then heroes cant help them but theyre loosing their minds and going feral and it makes the hurt/comfort even better. It just hits so good lol.
The things sweet Riley had to go through to save her… and to save her scent matches and ultimately himself were soooo heartbreaking. Honesty I loved him and I felt so bad that he knew she was his scent match and had to watch her in that asylumn and not do anything to save her. It was awful.
Then the fact that he had to make her FORGET them? Ugh my heart broke!
I wasn’t sure how I would feel about the “group of Alphas” her mom (who legit gives Mommy Dearest) tries to set up to court her but they were amazing. They recognized that Nina was going through something and instead of taking advantage, ALL OF THEM went out of their way to work with Ethan, Copper and Riley to reintroduce them to her and try and help her recognize them as her scent matches.
(Side note.. not normally a huge fan of female Alphas but Cassidy was mfing chefs kiss. I loved her so much. I want her to have her own book even though she already has a pack lol).
ALSO Loved the older ex-hockey player Alphas.. Silas was amazing. I desperately need them to have their own book too!
The ending was perfect— all these Alphas coming together to get Nina to her scent matches and the entire story kept me engaged and entertained. Jenn knocked it out of the park yet again!
DNF. RH. This book is all over the place. It felt like maybe on of the first books this author wrote, but after checking it isn’t, I feel pretty confused by the high rating. The characters are so inconsistent, and over the top dramatic at times, I just can’t take it seriously.
When I read Omegaverse, I prefer my alphas to be a lot less weak than Ethan and Cooper, that’s for sure. Cooper promises to take care of Nina when she’s little. That goes out the window shortly thereafter when he divorces her mom, and he never checks in or follows up.
When he meets her later when she turns 18, he decides to manipulate her into a dom-sub relationship, by blackmailing her, during which he once again promises to protect her. The moment her evil mother Vivian shows up, Ethan lets her into the house. They stand by while Vivian has Nina taken, let her get drugged in front of them. Why did Cooper let these people into his house? Even if he had no choice legally, he doesn’t even try to call the police. He and Ethan are just like “Oh well, that’s too bad. We’ll call the lawyer and see what can be done, but we wouldn’t want to take any risks.”
Also, what’s with Ethan complaining about spoiled rich girls, but then they force Nina to give up her job and treat her like a spoiled rich girl.
Nina gets committed to a mental institution that openly tortures Omegas. It’s legal for some reason. She’s there for a few months while her mates flail uselessly. Luckily, Ethan’s friend Riley is a med student and hacker and gets himself assigned to the hospital. She’s tortured for about a year, because this is mysteriously going to make her a good Omega for packs.
DNF at 50%. She gets out and has no memory of her pack. The problem is that after the torture porn, I don’t really care about them getting back together. Honestly, this story would have been better if it started after the torture asylum. If chapter 15 had just been the start of the book and Nina gradually recovers from trauma that happened before the book started, I’d have been interested.
I realized that this is the third book by this author that I hated. I keep accidentally picking them up. I wish I could remember to blacklist this one.

This was not good. I have read two other Jenn Bullard omegaverse books, and they weren’t my favorites, but they were entertaining. Ours Later was just a mess.
Let’s run through the plot, shall we?
- Nina runs away from her controlling mother and ends up living in her car at college - Cooper, her former stepfather, and Ethan, her former stepbrother, reconnect with her but only after not recognizing her. Please note they hadn’t seen each other in only four years - Cooper and Ethan force Nina to move in with them in exchange for banging, without any conversation really, I might add. They’re scent matched though, so no further questions apparently - Maybe 24 hours into them reconnecting, Nina’s mom shows up and gets her committed to an omega rehabilitation center - Nina gets high-key tortured for almost a year and only gets released because Riley, a med student and Ethan’s boyfriend, hypnotizes her into forgetting all three of her scent matches (because obviously Riley must be one too…and knows how to hypnotize people, something that is never explained). We’re not even going to touch on how many avenues of getting Nina out her alphas didn’t even consider - With zero memories of her matches, Nina goes home and her evil mom makes her court different rich packs. Which are better than Cooper’s rich pack…because? And whose bonding will benefit Nina’s mom…because? - Somehow every single pack has been convinced to reunite Nina with her mates, which they do after a lot of raging and not a lot of calling the authorities on a blatant case of abuse - Blah blah blah heat and bonding - All the alphas torture and kill Nina’s mom while Nina is taking a nap - Nine gets a pack house! And a job! And a baby - Cooper tortures and murders the doctors at the evil rehab center and gets help burning the rehab to the ground - The end, wow so happy 🫠
Ours Later had very little going for it in the first quarter. Cooper and Ethan were unlikeable and uninteresting once they started talking to Nina. Also, the comfort level they had with getting down and dirty with Nina with each other in room had me frequently going “ew,” “not that,” and otherwise generally cringing. I went in obviously knowing this was a taboo romance. I’ve read a few step sibling ones, and I can get past a brief run as a stepfather too if I don’t think about it too hard. But a father and son in the same romantic relationship definitely gave me some ick. Plus, the entire taboo romance aspect of this story added very little to the plot and was barely discussed or acknowledged between the characters.
Nina, meanwhile, was such a nothing character. She’s the most basic, virginal (briefly), innocent, naive FMC you could imagine, and at no point in the torture and murder of her enemies is she actually involved. If you’re going to go hard on a revenge finale, the direct recipient of the initial abuse kinda needs to be involved, no? Just me? I doubt it. Of course, everyone adores her and thinks she’s the best omega in the world, minus her evil abusers obviously.
Ours Later at its core tried to do too many things at once, and accomplished none of them. I liked every other pack she courted better than her own, and her own pack went through a complete personality overhaul while they were apart. Truly nothing like their original characters in the painful first section of the book. I will say that was a good choice. I liked them better, but the consistency or any sort of character arc was tossed right out the window.
Now, if you’ve reached this far in this rant, you might be wondering why I finished this book. All I can offer is that I was on a train, and the train was on fire, and I kept thinking the fire would surely get better in the next chapter. I should have listened to the strong part of me that wanted to DNF before I even hit the 25% mark.
I liked Nina because she confident and had a backbone to be able to talk back and speak about her feelings openly and I hated her stuck up of a mom who wouldn’t do anything to be nicer to her daughter which made me dislike her even more and I also would like to say this 5 star read for me.
The plot twists kept me hanging for me to read more and it left me wanting more of the characters along their way to reach their happily ever after it gave a great conclusion to the book which made me happy and the writing was amazing throughout the story.
I liked Cooper’s cockiness and not afraid to speak his mind and go after what he wants and I wanted to read more about his character and the development between the characters were amazing.
Ethan was my favourite character because he actually was really interested in Nina which made me really excited and enjoyed most of the book because of him but nothing beats Nina at the end after I read this.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for a review.
I should’ve known going in when the nine-year-old used the term “noxious” that this was not going to be well-executed at all. Basically any part that was intended to be dark and/or edgy felt very half-hearted in action, and the dialogue was corny as hell most of the time.
I was curious about omegaverse, and i thought this is a decent choice. I knew its going to be porn on paper, but this was just bad…the plot is forced and the sex scenes are not even written well 🤣 DNF
DNF @ 28%. I tried to l like this. I looked past the grammatical errors but there were some plot points I couldn’t get behind, even as a reader who tends to enjoy taboo romance.
1.) Her stepfather was actively in her life from ages 9-14. I couldn’t get behind this.
2.) Father and Son talked about sex in graphic detail, even before fmc came along. I would’ve felt better if there had been some resistance to them both being a scent match to her but there wasn’t and it just felt icky.

I almost DNF’d this a few times. It was pretty heavy subject material and it felt like the FMC and her MMCs weren’t even together for about 50% of the story. I wouldn’t go as far as to say that I regret reading this, however, I also wouldn’t ever recommend it.
First half good, what happened in the second half?
The plot in the first half of the book was good. Very dubcon with the start of their relationship, but it’s a dark romance. The second half was awful though. The weird time skips with no indication. The entire furniture store scene was weird and made no sense. Cooper is feral, but then suddenly his voice is weird. All of the conversations with the FMC were stilted. She’d supposed to be an incredibly traumatized person, but then everyone’s always calling her a brat for normal trauma response?

This book took me through so many blinking emotions, from love and happiness, to anger and total betrayal and so much heartache and utter pain! I had to take quite a few breather breaks to get through Nina’s suffering and their joint heartbreak! And OMG how her alphas let her go to saver her!!! Wow that had me crying buckets!!! Luckily….in the end, peace is found, along with tons of love and devotion, as well as perfect revenge (insert evil laugh 😈)
I totally adored the other packs we meet who fake dated Nina, I can’t wait to get more from them and see how Jenn sets their future books.
The ending was just perfect and an unexpected HEA in just one book! Which for Jenn is a rarity, so I‘m taking my happy place win in a standalone!!
This book may have you crying and shouting, but it also makes you swoon so hard!! As normal for Jenn it is brilliantly written and totally enthralling from start to finish. I can’t recommend it enough!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
With the loss of her father 9 year old Nina has never had it easy with her controlling, degrading mother and her equally catty friends. However when she remarries, Nina has someone she can turn to for support, and he is her advocate. This unfortunately only lasted 5 years and Nina is yet again left in the controlling hands of her mother. When at 18 years old, her mum threatens to send her to a mental institution for “her mental health”, because she won’t conform or be the “perfect” daughter, Nina runs!!!
Cooper is left reeling after Vivian and his divorce, his money just wasn’t enough for her anymore! So 4 years ago he moved away from Georgia to Minneapolis with his son Ethan, to teach Eastern European history and to forget the haunting eyes of a young girl he had to leave behind.
Cooper rarely laughs anymore, occupying all his time teaching a job he enjoys! But that all changes when a new student starts, a young woman that he knows, one he realises he shouldn’t have left behind. A grown up young woman who now smells like “his”.
Ethan is a student at the university his father teaches at, when he nearly runs over a girl in the university carpark with blonde/pink hair. One month later he literally bumps into her walking to class and is immediately taken by her.
When one evening a mysterious SUV is on Cooper & Ethan’s street, they go to investigate, only to find Nina! Once they both usher her into their house, there is no mistaking she is both their scent-match.
However Vivian has found Nina and there is no way she is letting them anywhere near her daughter!!
Whilst Nina is locked away in a mental institution “for rehabilitation”, Ethan’s best friend/lover medical student sets himself up for clinical rotation to see if he can help her. Only to discover he’s her scent match too!
Vivian or the institution won’t let Nina out until she conforms and forgets her scent matches! So what other alternative does anyone have!!
Now forgotten about her matches and more than happy to be out of the institution, Nina stays quiet and follows every word her mother orders, whilst struggling mentally. One order being to mate her off to packs her Mother has chosen!!
With the help and support of amazing friends Cooper, Ethan and Riley have to remembering, she’ll be “ours Later”!
The sex was hot. The “institution” chapters were torture (in a good way). But honestly, the plot just gets whackier and whackier. Like, wtf.
I mean… hypnosis? So let me get this straight—this “institution” has been trying to brainwash Nina for months, progress has been slow as hell, but then Riley suggests hypnosis and poof, it works???
Anyways, things started to get boring and exhausting, and I found myself skimming… *sighs*. Thank God I did, cuz shit really started to hit the fan.
The majority of the book is with the cunt of a mother, who is extremely insufferable btw, and she made me lose interest FAST.
What’s the mom’s deal, anyways? Her motivations are all over the place. She doesn’t care for Nina, but she cares who Nina ends up with because she wants her mated to a rich pack for money. But like… she doesn’t even need that, because she’s already loaded thanks to her latest husband. Also, if she’s such a good liar, why can’t she just pull the same act on her husband, who’s apparently waiting for her to marry off her daughter so they can go on a worldwide tour or whatever? She’s such a confusing villain.
Also, having chapters with her POV just made things worse.
The alphas, while not lacking in the sex department, are weak, dumb, and utterly useless.
Also, I know people flag this book as cheating, but I’m not recognizing it for this one. Even though Cooper was having sex with his TA while knowing Nina was his Scent Match, he had an arrangement with OW—and that only happened before he got into a relationship with Nina. Plus, Nina wasn’t even aware Cooper was hers, didn’t acknowledge it, and even entertained the idea that theycould be together (she was trying to avoid him at all cost. Girl wanted nothing to do with him).
Ever since I've entered my omegaverse era, I've been longing for a merger of some of my favorite contemporary tropes that I don't find as often in omegaverse - like taboo/forbidden (which is hard when biology is the accepted driver), larger age gaps, and the oh-so-yummy stepbrother trope. SO seeing this one combined all of those in a darker storyline, I was super excited to dive in. And GASP this had so much potential....a unique and interesting storyline, the forbidden dynamics that are interesting to explore in an OV set up, some twisted elements, and all the omegaverse hallmarks I eat just up. And, it just didn't quite live up to the potential for me. Though I enjoyed it overall and it was entertaining- but it didn't quite live up to what I though it would be.
In terms of darkness, the most of it really is outside the dynamic. We start in a more coercive type relationship with two of our alphas and our omega (as they basically sexually blackmail her), but we dont' get to stay there long because of how quickly the brainwashing plotline picks up. Which was interesting because THAT was the most interesting relationship and psychological elements of the story to me....I loved the idea of the alpha instinct at odds with the darker needs. So the darkness mostly comes from the external plotline- and all the torture. There's a lot of it. Of our heroine (not by her alphas) and then when it comes to taking out the baddies. Truthfully, I found myself skimming some of that- not because I couldn't handle the darkness, but it felt that too much page real estate was devoted to it. Our omega's torture I understand was vital to understanding her, and her trauma, but that and the ending get even stuff while satisfying just felt like it pulled away from the romance for me.
And that was really I think my main frustration - the page real estate felt imbalanced to the romance. So little of the story is actually our alphas and omega together. We have a lot external drama where they are apart, a bunch of other characters that I loved and are interesting but felt like took up a lot of the story, and then they reunite and have to "start over" (at least for her) yet we dont really see her get to sink into that much before it's the HEA. So I guess I just wanted MORE to dig into the pack dynamics, more to settle into the actually FALLING in love, just MORE of the chemistry there. This is really less about an omega finding her pack and more just an omega going through a bunch of bad stuff- and for that, the story is great. I loved watching Nina find her path and freedom. But if you, like me, come for the pack romance and falling, this just fell a bit flat for me. NOt because I didn't like the characters or their dynamic, but because it just felt imbalanced to the rest of it.
Super creative idea, and I'll definitely be checking back for more because I like the world and other alphas (and have enjoyed some other Jenn stories), and I did enjoy it overall and think many dark OV lovers will enjoy- just was not quite what I was craving.
This story messed with my mind in the best way possible and I am not mad about it. There were so many twists and turns that were never ending, that at times when I thought we could be getting closer to a happy ending, we suddenly were taken in a different direction- so much so that I never thought our FMC, Nina, would ever be happy again.
My heart absolutely broke for Nina. She endured so much at the hands of her evil mother that there were certain points in the story where I felt completely helpless for her and thought that she would never be able to regain the light that she had in her before. When I say she suffered, she SUFFERED. This was DARK (seriously read the trigger warnings on this one before continuing because it gets dicey at points and there were even some spots where I wasn't sure I was going to be able to continue) but also had a great balance between that darkness and the lighter moments that made the story flow. I loved how there were always tinges of hope where Nina's men were involved after her reprogramming that led you to believe that they weren't entirely out of the picture and it was nice to see that they were all able to have the happily ever after they had been denied for so long.
What I also really enjoyed was the changes and growth that happened with Pack Thornfield throughout the story. Cooper and Elliot were certainly forbidden in terms of Nina's relationship with her and started off as somewhat dark, controlling men who had very specific tastes, tastes that Nina had no issue with. After her removal from their house and the temporary separation of their pack, Nina was never the same person that she was when she reconnected with them and it was nice to see that they were all able to adapt and not force old patterns and tastes onto her, but rather begin to move forward and discover each other again with new eyes and a greater patience with each other. The chemistry between them never disappeared, because deep in their hearts, they always knew that they were destined for each other, but it was nice to see that chemistry evolve and get rediscovered again in new ways. It also made their reunion with Nina that much better, especially given the fact that there were so many "potential" pack willing to help her along the way regain what she had lost. I for one can't wait to see more from all of these packs and get more updates on Pack Thornfield along the way.
This book is about an omega who grew up being told she was never good enough, who escapes the madness that is her mother, only to find her pack but with the threat of it all being ripped away, hanging over her head.
This book is heartbreaking, there are some serious triggers here that had me questioning, “how will I make it past this chapter, how can I continue reading with the agony our characters are experiencing?” Knowing that the book has a HEA helped, Jenn has also earned our trust, she will fix it, she always does. So check the trigger warnings and take care of yourself!
Jenn has created a masterpiece, a painful, heart shattering masterpiece… thankfully she is great with superglue, and I am looking forward to rereading it, to cry and rage all over again. Her characters are real, the depth to them is incredible, I don’t know how she manages, each and every book of hers that I’ve read has all had these real moments, emotional responses you would expect from real people, how she creates them and keeps track of them all, I’ll never know. It’s a gift that I am beyond grateful that she has chosen to share with us.
I love this book, I love every tear, every laugh, and every moment of pain and rage that it caused. This is the kind of book I wish I could forget, to experience the book for the first time all over again. After only reading the prologue I was hooked, one chapter later and I’m invested, this book was a rollercoaster, Jenn is playing our emotions like a fiddle and I couldn’t be happier.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes dark omegaverse, to anyone who loves reading a book where the MMCs will not hesitate to do whatever it takes to protect the FMC, no price too high, nothing is off limits.
I just want to make clear that this book wasn’t all heartbreak, there was humour, dark, dirty and light, but since this review was pretty darn gloomy, I’ll share with you two quotes that still has me giggling.
“F**k me, I just became a f**ked up version of a bowling ball.”
“I’m proud of myself. I’ve learned new people’s names today. Bonding at its finest.”
Ours Later is book one of the Forbiddenverse Series.
This one has some moments where you might get uncomfortable. You get a lot of psychological abuse and tampering which causes a lot of pain and torment for Nina. She goes through the ringer and loses her identity. But we get to see her work through everything so she can try to get back some of what she has lost.
Now Nina's mother might be the worst person I have ever read about in one of Jenn's books. She was most definitely a see you next Tuesday. What a selfish and hateful person. She was such an ugly person and was a major abuser who thought they were always in the right and put all of the blame on Nina.
I loved all of the packs which gathered around Nina and made sure she was protected as much as they could. They see everything she is going through with her mother and they work so hard to correct this. I enjoyed seeing their dark and vengeful sides come out when they take their pound of flesh.
Nina's pack is filled with such amazing characters. I didn't love Cooper at the start. He had control issues and I didn't like how he started his relationship with Nina. But with the possibility of losing her and going feral, he really changes into a more caring character with her. Ethan makes a full change in his character. He was a bit of a douche near the start, but he was with everyone. We then see him become more personable as time goes on. Riley was the best of the group. He is the most caring and compassionate of the lot, but he also is the most traumatized by what he sees Nina go through.
Jenn Bullard never misses. I swear every single time I pick up her books, everything else just fades away. The next thing I know, it's several hours later, and I'm either almost done or have finished reading. This took me around 2 days to read just because I had to be a responsible adult.
I went into this story blind I didn't know what it was going to be about at all. First thought step brother romance. Then I was like, wait a minute. Stepbrother and stepdad?! Then there was another alpha, a psycho mom, and a very messed up institution.
While there are definitely dark elements to the story, it's nowhere near as dark as some of Jenn's other books. Nina is an omega trying to make it on her own. She's got a scholarship and several jobs trying to keep herself afloat. She's in a new city as far away from her controlling mother as she can be. What she never expects is to see Cooper, her once stepfather, teaching one of her classes. Attraction is instant and obviously very forbidden. Then there's Ethan, her former stepbrother. She doesn't even recognize him, and they keep bumping into one another. When her mom makes her unwelcome return into her life, they must turn to Riley another alpha to help them save Nina.
This book was 🥵. The first part of Nina's story wasn't bad. I actually got lulled into a false sense of security. Then her mom came back into their lives and was like there it is. She was controlling and determined to mold Nina into what she believes an omega should be. You will absolutely hate her. Don't worry, though karma definitely comes back around for her. There were some characters introduced that were just amazing! I'm excited to read their story next.
Nina is an amazingly strong Omega. She goes through so much at the hands of her mother.
Nina runs from home to go to college. She gets a scholarship but is living out of her car. She has a full course load and works so she can afford food and gas. As the nights get colder she starts to worry. Imagine her surprise when she realizes she has been parking outside of her former stepfather and stepbrother's house. Better yet they are both her scent match.
Just when things are starting to look up the mother reappears and throws her daughter into a psych type program. This is really a reprogramming program that is seriously messed up. I mean think like old school like electro shock kind of therapy.
With the help of the stepbrothers casual fling they need to find a way to get her out of there and back to them. Of course nothing can be easy.
The mother in this story is seriously a freaking monster. She does everything in her power to force Nina into a mold she believes is right. She needs to make sure she goes to a pack that will benefit her in some way.
Thankfully her scent matches will do anything to get her back to them and ensure the mother pays for what she has done.
I was shocked at some of the unique ways this poor Omega was abused in the name of reform. I really enjoyed the story but it is dark so make sure you check trigger warnings.
