Killmarth Trials #1

The Ordeals: A Novel

Rate this book
In this lush, atmospheric romantasy, an illusionist competes in a series of deadly trials for a spot at an elite magical college—that is, if another hopeful doesn’t kill her first.

Twenty-year-old Sophia DeWinter has only known life bound to her cruel uncle, the Collector, thanks to a blood bond he exacted from her as a child. When she learns of Killmarth College, an elite academy for magic wielders outside of the Collector’s control, she knows it is her only chance to finally break free. But to gain entry, she will have to compete against other illusionists, masquiers, botanists, and alchemists in a series of brutal trials that many hopefuls don’t survive—the Ordeals.

Sophia knows her skills as an illusionist are weak; she only makes it through the first challenge by teaming up with a powerful (and insufferably sexy) botanist, Alden Locke. To make it out alive, she will have to hone her magic and learn to identify who is a rival, who could be an ally, and who is a murderer.

Because now, not only does she have to protect her heart, but her very life. Hopefuls are being viciously picked off one by one between the challenges. In her haste to escape the Collector’s trap, Sophia may have fled straight towards her own death sentence.

I enjoyed the characters and the plot but it took me way too long to finish this book.

As much as I liked the world and its lore, the pacing felt too slow for me.

Other than that it was a pretty good fantasy romance. There’s more plot/fantasy than the romance. But what we did get of the romance was definitely hot 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️ Alden Locke you have my attention hehe

I was lowkey expecting this to be a YA book but it’s actually not. This is definitely adult and has explicit spicy scenes.

I’m so tuning back in to read the next book for sureeee.

Sophie DeWinter is an illusionist living under her ruthless uncle, The Collector. He sends her on assignments, gathering information that Sophia very well knows could lead to their death; but the contract on wrist has bound her to him since she was four, and she can do nothing of it.
Until Killmarth. A college for Wielders, like her; and with the help of a talkative (and very hot) man, Alden, Sophia learns how to get in and where to find the Ordeals, the set of challenges she and fifty-one other hopefuls will go through to be accepted into Killmarth.
But there is more at play than at first glance, and Sophia must form strong alliances and relationships to protect herself from the dark forces that would do her harm… before they kill everyone Sophia still loves.

Okay first thoughts: this book sort of gives Fourth Wing x Harry Potter x Powerless kinda x another magic system that I just can’t think of right now…
The setting of Fourth Wing (magic college), the like atmosphere and vibes of Harry Potter (old castle, magical school), Powerless sort of in the magic?? but not really… I can’t think of what book I want to compare the magic to because it reminds me so much of it but I can’t think of it and it’s infuriating.
anyways yeah those are my thoughts on like the inspiration.
as for the plot: honestly? I don’t know how, but this book kept me hooked
I had some complaints (about grammar and plot mostly, laid out in “dislikes”) but like despite that I still find myself wanting more… how? Like genuinely, not to be rude, but I can’t think of one truly exemplary aspect of this book, be it the plot or the magic or the characters (besides the setting but any magic setting is cool for me) and yet I enjoyed this book and still gave it 3.75 stars. It’s surprising, and I applaud the author because even I, the reader, don’t know how it happened.
like I said, the setting was amazing; very atmospheric and magical, and it definitely fit the story.

‧₊˚❀༉‧₊˚. 𝕕𝕚𝕤𝕝𝕚𝕜𝕖𝕤 ‧₊˚❀༉‧₊˚.

I don’t really know how to say this, but like… just how contradictory and whiplash level quick the relationship is. Like:
We’re talking, yup- oh never mind we’re kissing. For no reason.
Oh we’re fighting? Nah nm now we’re making out.
Oh we just had sex? Nope I’m leaving because I can’t accept that someone can want to protect me without thinking I’m weak. So yeah I’m going to go against everything I say and do because… I can?? (I being Sophia)
Who even knows. But do you see my point???
Also, Sophia herself is contradictory. Like… she goes and says she can’t do it, she’s not strong enough, but when he agrees and says that she shouldn’t do it, she gets offended?? The level of hypocrisy, like girlie he’s agreeing with you-
(it’s more layered then that but that’s the non-spoiler condensed version)
also, I think the author overuses commas; I forgot to pick out an example, but there'll be some parts where there should be a semicolon or a period or even nothing at all and there'll be a comma. it's not super excessive, but it did happen more towards the end of the book. so that did take away a little from my reading experience, however like I said earlier, it didn't take away from it as much as I would've expected it to.

* ੈ✩‧₊˚ 𝕨𝕣𝕒𝕡-𝕦𝕡 * ੈ✩‧₊˚

overall, a fun read that left me wanting more! I'd recommend for fans of Powerless, Fourth Wing, dark academia, or really romantasy in general.

Wow, what a book! I’ve been on a streak of great romantasy lately, and The Ordeals by Rachel Greenlaw is another standout addition to the genre. It blends all my favorite tropes—dark academia, rivals to lovers, deadly trials, mystery, and a dash of romance—into one compelling read.

Twenty-year-old Sophia DeWinter is an illusionist, blood-bound to her cruel uncle, the Collector. Her only chance to break free lies in gaining admission to Killmarth, an elite magical college for gifted wielders. But to earn a spot, she must first survive the entrance exam—and that’s just the beginning. Those who pass the exam, known as "hopefuls," must then compete in a series of brutal trials called the ordeals to secure their place as students. And not everyone will make it out alive.

Sophia teams up with a fellow wielder, the enigmatic botanist Alden Locke, and a few other hopefuls. To complicate matters, someone begins murdering contestants between trials—despite the fact that killing outside the ordeals is forbidden. Out of 52 hopefuls, only 20 can secure a spot, making the competition fierce. Sophia will need all her wits to survive, as trusting the wrong person could be her undoing.

I loved this book and couldn’t get enough of it. The magic system is wonderful, featuring different types of wielders: illusionists, masquiers, botanists, and alchemists—each with their own strengths and abilities. On top of that, there are werewolves, vampires, and gargoyles, which add an extra layer of suspense and danger. While the world-building is intriguing, it’s not fully developed here, but it will probably be expanded upon in the next installment.

The storytelling is intense—full of tension and atmosphere. The trials reminded me of The Hunger Games in their ferocity. That said, I did find some of the deaths unnecessary. Couldn't the failed students have just been dismissed instead of killed?

The pacing is even and well-handled, keeping the tension steady without feeling rushed. The writing is smooth and immersive, making it easy to sink into the world and stay hooked from start to finish.

I adored Sophia—her determination, her spark, and her journey of self-discovery. She was taught how to blend in, think on her feet, defend herself, and gather intel, skills she later uses in the trials. She’s strong, fierce, and independent. Alden, on the other hand, is the strategist—powerful and determined, carrying his own demons.

Sophia longs for freedom and fights fiercely for her place at Killmarth, but she never loses her compassion. Even when it threatens her chances, she helps others. She learns that vulnerability isn't weakness. I loved her dynamic with the other characters and how she connected with them.

There’s a slow-burn romance, but it’s not quite enemies to lovers—the attraction is visible from the start. The romance isn’t the focus, but it adds a welcome layer of emotional tension. Sophia and Alden are rivals, but they’re also partners, each learning to trust and open up to the other.

I devoured this book in just a couple of days—I was completely enthralled. The author does an excellent job pulling you into the story and making you care about the characters. While most threads are tied up by the end, a few are left dangling, setting the stage for what’s next.

The book is well-written, cleverly plotted, and the twists—especially at the end—left me eager for the sequel. Highly recommended to fans of the genre looking for a fresh take. If you enjoy dark academia, high-stakes trials, and a mix of mystery and magic, this is the book for you.

Thanks to Net Galley & HQ for the arc.

I literally read this in one sitting. I loved the whole gothic feel—dark, atmospheric, and exactly the kind of dark academia vibes I’m a sucker for.

I really enjoyed the magic system and super cool world, which i hope is fleshed out even further in the next part. I need more cos OBSESSED much.

The twists kept me hooked, the magic and trials were super fun, and watching Sophia grow into her powers was so satisfying.

The romance moves fast and Sophia can be a little contradictory at times, but it didn’t ruin the story for me at all. Fast-paced, addictive and all in just a really fun time.

Seriously, if you love magical academies, dark academia, or just stories that keep you turning pages, then this will be the perfect read.

1 ★ [DNF around halfway]

This book sounded promising but was so disappointing.

The romance is all insta-lust from the start. The main characters meet and kiss in chapter 1. For me, this was a major let down. I was hoping for some build-up, tension, and chemistry—like give me a reason to be interested and root for the couple. I was tempted to DNF there and then but was holding out hope that the author would create tension when they got to the college, but no, the banter was filled with the most cringe-worthy sexual innuendos. Their relationship was so forced and shallow.

The world building is almost non-existent and feels all over the place—motor cars, steam trains, old magic, gods, and then the FMC dresses up in tight-fitting sports clothes and running shoes(??)
I did find the magic system interesting with illusionists, botanists, masquiers, and alchemists but wished the author focused on the world more than tropes.

Listed as Adult/New Adult on Goodreads, but the writing feels very juvenile. The plot and characters lack the depth and complexity typically expected from an adult novel. I think this book might work better if the explicit scenes were removed and it was remarketed as YA, as the story seems more fitting for a younger audience. As it stands, the characters feel underdeveloped and the plot predictable, which made it hard to connect with the story.

3.5 ★— I had my fun with this read, though the story lost a bit of its charm for me as it went along. Still, if you’re looking for something light and easily digestible, with a trial-based academy plot that doesn’t demand too much emotional investment, The Ordeals has that to offer.

Sophia De Winter is a solid heroine for much of the story. She starts out as a competent fighter who uses her cleverness and powers to outwit her way into Killmarth College, escaping the oppressive life under her uncle. And because I do enjoy following heroines who start out as underdogs, it was satisfying to see her navigate her entrance into academy and learn more about its students as the book progressed.

The trials, or rather the ordeals, were pretty engaging throughout, though I found they lost some of their tension and excitement as things went on, dragging a little towards the end.

Now, the weakest part of the story for me was the romance. While I liked how Sophia first met the MMC, Alden, and thought there was a nice mix of tension and mystique in their first encounter, their dynamic quickly became repetitive. Most of their interactions boiled down to kissing or making out and what started as insta-lust quickly turned into insta-love and basically stayed there, with there being very little real development in their relationship. It felt like they never built anything deeper through trust or emotional connection, and I often got the impression that the author relied on physical moments between them to show “growth” instead of developing their bond more meaningfully.

Another issue was the worldbuilding, or really, the lack of it.
The author didn’t give a clear sense of what kind of world this story takes place in. We do eventually learn some background information, like that people with powers once lived in hiding before being accepted into wider society, but we never get the fundamentals of this fantasy world. Questions such as what kind of government this country has, what the social structure looks like, or any of the grounding details that make a fantasy world believable are left unanswered.
Also, the sheer mix of so many differing elements in the book added to this general feeling of disjointedness. The world reads as old-fashioned and historical in some parts, yet there are tight leggings, motor cars, and trains. I just wish there had been more attention and clarity given to the setting’s foundations.

The academia aspect was also quite minimal. The book explicitly states that the first semester is focused on the ordeals, so anyone looking for a true academic or scholarly vibe will probably miss that here. There is some training, and the brief glimpses of lessons in between the trials do help build a bit of atmosphere, but the story doesn't offer much in terms of academy life.

So, overall, if you’re in the mood for a lighter, trope-filled academy story with a quick pace and just want to bask in that, this is your book.

The Ordeals
by Rachel Greenlaw
Fantasy New Adult
NetGalley eARC
Pub Date: Oct 7, 2025

Ages: 18+

As a young child, before she understood what she was promising, Sophia DeWinter pledged herself to her uncle, the Collector, with a blood bond that tracks her movements through the city and punishes her if she strays too far.

But she had heard rumors of an elite academy for magic wielders that could destroy her uncle's magical bond, and during one of the missions her uncle forced her to undertake, she found the answers that would allow her into the college.

The problem is that her magic of illusions is weak, and she would have to compete against other magic wielders more powerful than her and survive.

This book seems very heavily influenced by H.P. and The H. Games, but sadly, the magics aren't really described, and the trials seemed flat, so they need some more depth.

It's not a bad read, but there are so many similar themes that readers have seen in many other books that not much is memorable. To do this review, I had to re-read the blurb to make sure I was thinking of the correct book. Another problem I had was that while Sophia was supposed to be twenty, she (and the other characters, including those over thirty) acted like a sixteen-year-old, and I had to confirm a few times of Sophia's age, especially when questionable content was included. And NO, this isn't suitable for readers under eighteen because of that (unneeded) adult content, and violence. (It wasn't detailed, but it's enough to warn parents of the content.)

What I liked the least was the story's climax... It didn't fit, as if … possible spoiler....

While, at this time, this isn't listed as a series, it was left open so there could be a sequel, one I don't know if I'll read.

A very low...

The fact that The Ordeals isn't anywhere on my feed is truly mind boggling. It was addictive. I was pulled in from the start and putting it down to "adult" pained me. How dare a world outside of this book exist!

I love the FMC, Sophia. Shes smart, brave and fearless. Even without the power the others possess. She doesn't let it deter her. She reaches down to the depths of her being and she rises. She perseveres. I was rooting for her every step of the way.

The trials are thrilling. The romance between Sophia and the MMC, Alden is perfection. They use each other, until they don't. The book is fast paced and action packed. There were also werewolves and vampires, which for me was the cherry on top. The ending. OMG THE ENDING. I'm still recovering.

The Ordeals is a whirlwind of magical survival. An exciting story told within an immersive world. I cant wait for the next book!

Soooo - this is like the hunger games meets Harry Potter, but spicier. This was a fun time. Easy to follow plot that keeps you engaged, and the MMC Alden was top notch. The banter, the rivals/tentative allies to lovers. I will definitely continue with this series.

Sophia has lived her life in servitude to the Collector. Finding marks at his commands, doing whatever he asks. Her only chance at freedom is to find the elusive crucible - an entrance trial to enter the ordeals at the magical academy. As Sophia is a wielder - and illusionist - and was trained by the ruthless Collector - she passed the crucible and then is able to enter the ordeals. Her freedom lies at the academy and the wards that protect it - as they also break the magical contract she has with the Collector. But this is not without risk - the ordeals are deadly. Four separate trials that will narrow down the hopefuls until only twenty remain. And if the trials don’t get you, other initiates may try as well. As Sophia begins the fight for her life - she learns more about her past and her magic. Also meets an eclectic crew of other initiates and professors. One being a tentative ally she can’t trust but feels so much chemistry with - but he isn’t the only one hiding secrets. As the two team up for the ordeals and face mortal danger - they start to grow closer - but it doesn’t take long for the challenges to start pulling apart Sophia’s reality at the seams and throw her world into chaos.

Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

I really wanted to like this one but it just didn’t work for me. Sophia wants to get into Killmarth College so she can escape the blood bond that ties her to her uncle. But in order to gain entry, she must compete and survive the trials known as the ordeals. Her magic abilities are weak so she teams up with Alden to survive.

Between the insta-lust relationship, in a book like this you expect more tension and build up, and the voice of the book, I feel that all the things that make this an 18+ read need to be taken out. This would be better as a YA. 2.5 stars rounded up.

“Fast-reading dark-academy romantasy that had the potential but could have delivered a little bit more”

I’m honestly torn. You know that moment when you feel a book could be absolutely perfect, delivering everything you expected… but then it just doesn’t? That’s exactly how I feel. I could give anywhere from 2 to 5 stars to this book. It’s somehow both a page-turner, yet at some point it loses momentum and fails to sustain its early promise.

The storyline is amazing, with some really interesting development axes/topics: the magic, the childhood trauma, the touch of horror, the mystery around the FMC and her power… all of it had so much potential.

The introduction is hot and intriguing, and the first ~30% of the book is absolutely perfect,— fast-paced and gripping, with no time wasted. You dive straight into it and never come back because you’re completely sucked in. Steam, hookups, death, horror, magic, a badass FMC with a strong personality, grief — so much packed into so few pages that you’re sure this story is going to be incredible, both for the writing style and the early development and pacing.

But then the execution starts to fall apart. I don’t know if the structure becomes too academic or simply too predictable, but the strengths of the beginning aren’t there anymore. The plot grows messier: some events still manage to surprise, but overall, you start thinking, “Well, yes, obviously, I saw that coming.”

We also slip into a repetitive pattern, both in the structure and in the sequence of events: ordeal, then make-out scene, then another ordeal, then another make-out scene. It makes the romantic moments lose their spark (some of them even feel almost copy-and-paste from the previous one). I was expecting the relationship between the main characters to be more challenged. We’re immediately sure of their sexual attraction, but nothing ever complicates it or tests it, so the insta-lust quickly loses its charm when it’s just the obvious thing in front of us from page one.
The ordeals themselves remain captivating, but everything in between feels like something is missing, and the excitement of the beginning slowly fades.

Still, I’m glad I read it. And of course, I will read book 2 because I want/have to know what is happening next :)

Thank you Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine | Delacorte Press, Netgalley and Rachel Greenlaw for providing me an eARC in exchange for my honest review.

This book felt very "middle of the road" for me. I didn't particularly dislike it but I also didn't exactly love it. Its main strength is the worldbuilding and the trials in my opinion. The stakes felt high during each trial and I enjoyed the mysteries surrounding the magical school. In a lot of ways, it reminds me of the Scholomance series in how the school isn't safe (at least until you pass all the trials). The overall mystery was fun to go along with, and I liked how the main character went about getting clues here and there.

Speaking of main characters, I did enjoy our FMC but I didn't feel like her character was developed enough or was coherent the whole way through the book. The MMC similarly falls into vague enough that it could be anyone who is half nice. They weren't terrible, they just didn't feel particularly real in how their actions sometimes misaligned with what we know of these characters.

The romance was insta-love, which is not my favorite build up, but I appreciate that the MMC wasn't a toxic asshole (a low bar I know, but in the Age of Shadow Grumpy Daddies a girl will take what she can get). I appreciated how they helped each other throughout the trials and their relationships with the secondary characters too.

Overall, it was just fine. It was entertaining and fast paced, it had me on my toes throughout, surprised me with the plot twist, but it wasn't necessarily memorable for me.

When Sophia hears of Killmarth, an elite academy for magic wielders, she’ll do anything to prove worthy of a place to escape from the sinister Collector to whom she’s been blood-bound since childhood. But to secure her place at the academy, Sophia must first endure the Ordeals – a series of deadly challenges that separate the weak from the powerful. But as the hopeful wielders are picked off one by one, Sophia must swiftly embrace her abilities as an Illusionist and discover who her allies are if she has any chance of joining Killmarth and becoming a scholar. As her feelings grow for her partner Alden Locke, and with the line between enemy and ally so thin, Sophia must figure out who she can trust if she is not only going to succeed but escape the Ordeals with her life.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and HarperCollins for the ARC.

The Ordeals is an absolutely stunning, whirlwind of a read! There’s no slow-burn that keeps you waiting on the edge of your seat here; this book is a full-on sprint from the very first page until the last. It’s the first book I’ve read by Rachel Greenlaw, and I was captivated by her utterly immersive writing style. The plot is so cleverly woven that it keeps you guessing until the very end, and I genuinely couldn’t put it down!

The world-building is brilliant, reworking familiar tropes and aesthetics into something unique. I loved the inspiration of St Michael’s Mount; the descriptions of Killmarth and Marazia took me right there. I could literally see Marazion and Penzance in my minds eye!

I was invested in the MCs Sophia and Alden from the very start, and loved that they both fall for each other simultaneously sooner rather than later. Their relationship is sweet and not too over-the-top, the perfect blend of charm and romance!

I do think the writing style steers more towards YA/New Adult, but that really didn’t stop me from loving it one bit.

Perfect for fans of dark academia and Fourth Wing, I can already see how popular The Ordeals will be. I will be thinking about *that* ending for some time - I’m still gathering myself back together! It’s the first book in a duology, so I’m already counting down to book 2 to read the conclusion of Sophia’s story. I cannot wait!

I think when it comes to fantasy books with the combination of a magic academy and trials, there has to be an element to the story that's unique or that grabs my attention because of how often we see these tropes in fantasies. I didn't quite find that here, so at times I felt my attention wasn't fully captivated. It wasn't anything too original, however I do think it's an enjoyable read that will appeal to many fantasy readers. The magic system was well-done, with 4 classifications of wielded (alchemists, botanists, illusionists, and masquiers).

The book centers around Sophia, an illusionist wielder. She decides to undertake the perilous entrance exam to the magic academy/college, Killmarth, in order to escape the powerful blood bind that forces her to do the bidding of her uncle. I loved the darker vibe in this story, and the author does a great job of establishing a gothic and eerie tone -- I'd suggest this to dark academia lovers.

I'd initially thought that the romance in this book would be rivals-to-lovers (as is also common in many dark academia books), but to me it was a pretty clear insta-love dynamic and I knew where it was headed the whole time. So as a result, I wasn't as invested in the romance because I felt it to be a bit one-dimensional - the chemistry fell flat. In particular, while Sophia was a very strong character, Alden felt like a cookie-cutter love interest.

This book wasn't a slam dunk for me, but it has many familiar and popular tropes that I think will appeal to fantasy romance lovers. Thank you so much to Delacorte and NetGalley for this ARC!

(3.25/5) At the root of this rating, this author's writing style wasn't for me.

What to expect:
🔪 Fantasy romance
🔪 1st person, single POV
🔪 Dark academia
🔪 Magic wielders
🔪 Trials

Spice rating: 🌶🌶

My disconnect with Rachel Greenlaw's writing style made it hard for me to truly enjoy the rest of the story because I kept getting sucked out of it. I don't like when things are overly spelled out for me, and her writing is very "on the nose." For example, she repeatedly has our main characters refer to each other as "rivals." As a result, the dialogue felt stiff at times and not always believable.

I never want to deter other readers from giving books a chance, so I'll leave my critiques at that major one.

I still gave this book a mid-level rating because I enjoyed the premise and felt this story had a lot of potential. However, I will not be continuing this series.

A sincere thank you to Allurial for gifting me a finished copy of The Ordeals.

I really enjoyed this book! It was a perfect combination of murder mystery, fantasy, and romance! It felt like playing a game of Clue with an interwoven magic system. This checked all my boxes; magical school, magical creatures, and a great connection between characters.

Sophia and Alden’s characters are so layered and complex, I loved learning more about them as more was revealed! The romance is so swoon worthy.

The ending was a good set up for what is to come in this series and leaves you wanting more, in the best way.

Thank you NetGalley for the honor of reading this book as an ARC reader. Rachel Greenlaw is definitely an author I’ll be keeping up with from now on!

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (3.75 rounded up to 4)
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts.

I recently read another book with a similar setup, and it made me realize I didn’t love it as much as I thought… because this one did it better.

Sophie DeWinter has one goal: survive her uncle, The Collector. Bound to him by a magical contract since childhood, she’s been his illusionist-for-hire, gathering secrets, playing spy, and risking her life for a man she hates. Then comes Killmarth, a secret academy for magic wielders, and maybe… a way out. With the help of Alden (broody, cunning, unfairly attractive), Sophie enters the Ordeals a dangerous series of magical trials that could finally set her free.

But Killmarth is hiding secrets of its own, and Sophie quickly learns that surviving the Ordeals might not be her biggest challenge. Between a murderer, vampires, and the shadow of her past, she has to fight even harder for her freedom.

This book felt like Fourth Wing and the Triwizard Tournament had a baby. Intense, magical, and high-stakes trials. I don’t always love “competition” plots, but these were genuinely fun to read, and the writing style kept me interested. I also liked how this first book set up what will become a be a much bigger story.

Now… the romance. Sophie and Alden started strong. Their instant spark had me hooked, but once they arrived at the school, the dynamic cooled off. It felt like they’d take a few steps forward and then back away for no clear reason. The tension just didn’t quite land, and their push-and-pull sometimes felt more forced than natural. Still, I enjoyed them as a duo in the trials and outside.

Overall, The Ordeals was a fun, adventurous romantasy that delivered on action, magic, and setup. And after that ending I’ll definitely be picking up the sequel.

All I can say is I am speechless. The plot twists kept on coming and were INSANE, so many of my guesses were completely wrong. The dark academia vibes were so strong, It made me absolutely adore this even more. Another thing I loved was how the romance was to complete and complement each other! The mysteries, found family, the romance, CHEFS KISS! That ending was brutal though, so I will be mentioning that in therapy next week! Thank you so so much Netgalley and Random House for allowing me to read this early!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5 stars) 🌶️ (1/5 chili peppers)

First, a big thank you to Rachel Greenlaw, the publisher (Random House Publishing Group), and NetGalley for the opportunity to read The Ordeals as an ARC.

What initially drew me in was that hauntingly beautiful cover and the promise of a dark academic fantasy with a twist. The Ordeals introduces us to Sophia DeWinter, our determined and resourceful FMC, who’s been raised by a manipulative uncle bound to her through a blood pact. Desperate to escape his control, Sophia sets her sights on Killmarth College, the only path to breaking the bond. Using a lifetime of stealthy skills honed under her uncle’s oppressive guidance, she secures her place—and meets Alden Locke, our MMC, along the way.

Once inside Killmarth, the story really finds its footing. The Ordeals themselves are a series of academic and magical trials that blend the eerie intrigue of dark academia with a touch of steampunk and a 1940s-esque aesthetic. I was completely invested in the setting and tone. Sophia shines here—not because of overwhelming magical power, but because she’s clever, gritty, and capable in ways that many characters in fantasy overlook. I appreciated how her non-magical skills were treated as equally powerful.

Now onto Alden… He’s likable, yes. Sweet, definitely. But I wasn’t fully sold on him as a love interest. Their relationship felt a bit too fast, a little too “Hallmark movie romance” for the gritty world they’re living in. I kept waiting for someone like Knox—who arrives later in the story—to shake things up, challenge Sophia, maybe even push her to grow in new ways. But that didn’t quite pan out. Alden’s protective instincts are well-meaning, but I didn’t get the sense that he truly elevates Sophia. He supports her, but doesn’t match her.

Still, the worldbuilding and pacing kept me engaged throughout. The cliffhanger ending strongly suggests this is the first in a series, and I’m definitely on board for the next installment. Fingers crossed the romance dynamic evolves a bit—or maybe even surprises us. I’d honestly love to see Sophia thrive on her own or with someone who challenges her fire.

Final Thoughts:
A compelling start to what I hope will be a rich and atmospheric series. It blends dark magic, academic intrigue, and a strong female lead in a world that feels both timeless and fresh. I just wish the romance had a bit more spark—or at least more tension. Still, I’ll be grabbing book two as soon as it drops.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets the Scholomance series!

I inhaled The Ordeals! Binge-worthy from start to finish, I devoured it in less than a day - and it would have been even faster if I hadn’t had to work! The last third had me on the edge of my seat. It was wild, twisty, and impossible to put down. I loved the fresh take on vampires and werewolves, seamlessly woven into a magical world that feels like it’s only just beginning to unfold. There’s obviously so much more to come too - more world, more magic, and more twists, and I can't wait to see where this series goes next!

Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy from NetGalley, but this is my voluntary and honest review.

fantasy romance readers: we are desperate for slow burn and drawn-out romantic tension
this author: you know what I'll do, I'll make the characters meet for the first time at the beginning of chapter one and have them make out...at the end of chapter one

✰ DNF in chapter ONE, if that wasn't already clear

thank you to Delacorte Press for the arc in exchange for an honest review

If you’re into the dark academia romantasy wave and need another one to scratch that itch, this could be a good option for some. I do wish there had been more worldbuilding, and maybe that’ll be explored more in book two? but I’m not sure I’m invested enough to pick it up when it releases, though. I just needed a bit more from the characters, and the romance moved faster than I expected. I just wanted more tension and yearning from them! Still enjoyable enough for me and think it would be a hit for some people!

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for approving me to read this book, it’s 5 stars.

MY HEART! The caps are so necessary just to be clear. I cannot fathom that ending, the false security the author led me into, god I’m a fool. I cried.

Let’s talk about the little side romance plot that unfolds during this because it was fun, the innuendos and banter until they succumbed to their feelings, very hot. The friendships and alliances made are not to be underestimated, the side characters were actually vital for my enjoyment to be honest. I don’t often say the side characters feel that pivotal, but they were a real highlight in this and they compliment our main characters very well.

The magic system is intriguing mixed with the somewhat lawless nature of the world we’re navigating and the political conflicts between different groups of people. The FMC deserves a round of applause because she dealt with so much turmoil and hardship while experiencing a new environment and literally horror at every turn. The Ordeals will keep you on your toes, you won’t know who to trust and whats around the corner of every page, it has been a real good time I highly recommend reading this book.

This had a slow start but got interesting once we reached the ordeals and the meat of the story. I enjoyed our two main characters and their romance, though the characters lacked depth overall. Still, the story was entertaining enough that I could overlook that. I also loved the setting with the school on its own island, only accessible by land when the tide is low, and the magic system with its four classes of wielders: alchemists, masquiers, botanists, and illusionists. There are even some creatures of the night woven in, which added a nice touch. I’d love to see the magic system explored in more depth in the next book.

The ordeals were the standout parts of the novel, driving the plot forward and revealing key details about the overarching mystery and our main character’s past. While one of the twists was very predictable, I still enjoyed how everything unfolded. With its mix of mystery, magic, and romance, the story built momentum toward a satisfying conclusion that left me eager to see where the series goes next.

~*Brakebills (the Magicians) meets Hunger Games, but more Supernatural*~

Sophia DeWinter discovers a way to dissolve a contract bond she has with her uncle, The Collector - find the exclusive Killmarth school. However, what may be lurking in the shadows may be more dangerous than the Ordeals (trials) themselves. Is teaming up with Alden going to be enough to make it through the Ordeals, or will he be another rival she will have to overcome?

This was a 5 star read for me: it had a (deadly!) magic school, slow-burn romance, unique and defined magic system, plot driven, and well rounded characters.

Right away, I loved the conflict and problem that is set up immediately. There's an internal struggle of what Sophia wants (Alden), her obligations (The Collector), and what she needs (freedom). The promise of those conflicts are echoed throughout the entire book, and it keeps the pacing and rhythm moving nicely.

I appreciated that the magic was not "all-powerful" - there was a cost to using so much of your power at once, so it made the stakes high. Each Ordeal had their own unique twists and turns, it keeps you on your toes of what is happening. With how deadly the Ordeals were by themselves, it adds alot of tension and suspense of not only if they are going to pass the Ordeal, but are they going to also survive the Ordeal.

The underlying driving plot was also engaging. It tied in really well with the lore of the magic, Sophia attending the school and making it through the Ordeals, how the Collector is involved, and Alden's connection to it all as well. Everything had a purpose, and it was fun watching it all come together.

Thank you to the author, Rachel Greenlaw, the publisher Delacorte Press, and NetGalley for the opportunity to provide an ARC review. This review is completely my own thoughts and opinions.
