Chadwick’s the wealthy CEO of his family’s brewery, and Serena works as his executive assistant. With Serena pregnant by her ex and Chadwick battling a takeover as well as an ugly divorce, it’s a messy time to start a relationship, but they can’t resist.
Some readers may have issues with Chadwick’s marital status, though it’s made really clear that the marriage is over and he was faithful until then. His wife was a little hard to take, I maybe would have preferred to see her harpiness dialed down a bit, but I appreciated that ultimately Chadwick shared the blame for the breakdown of their marriage.
This is a Desire, so there’s an emphasis on steaminess and sexual attraction, though for me, the book shone brightest in the friendship beneath the lust, where Serena and Chadwick encouraged and leaned on each other. Yeah, he does the typical romance thing of showering her in designer goods, but the truly romantic and refreshing moment was when thanks to Serena’s nudging, Chadwick make’s a life choice that you wouldn’t ordinarily see from a driven alpha in a romance.
On the not so refreshing side, Serena’s a size ten, the author did a great job of showing that Chadwick’s into Serena’s curves, and she isn’t ashamed of them, and yet, the model on the cover is thinner than the character. There’s all sorts of beautiful in the world; it would be nice if publishers recognized that, then women might see it in their own mirrors.
