I just wanted to sell the house—not find a body in the master bedroom.

But sure enough, there was the homeowner, dead on the floor. And of all the cops to show up to investigate, why did it have to be the same drool-worthy guy I met while chasing after my little terror of a dog, Pebbles, in my bathrobe and hot-pink slippers?

I’d hoped to never see him again but should have known that wouldn’t be possible in a town as small as Parker’s Landing. When the investigation threatens my life and my livelihood, I welcome Ozzie’s presence—for more than just the security he provides. Beneath his standoffish, gruff exterior is a kind-hearted protector. One who’s become Pebbles’s favorite human. And who am I kidding? He’s mine too.

But as we get closer to the truth, the more dangerous things become. Secrets long buried come to light, and it’s clear someone will do anything to keep them hidden.

3.5 stars

This is my first time reading a romantic mystery, at least from what I recall. It was actually awesome! The romance was my favorite aspect, as always, and the mystery was a perfect vessel for propelling that romance. That’s the balance I like, and this novel hit that balance perfectly.

I want to delve more into this genre, and I imagine I’ll become more discerning as I read more of these types of books. I’m rating this a 3.5 stars and very generously rounding up because it was such a novel experience for me, and I enjoyed it a lot!

But there were some pretty big weaknesses that I think would bother me more if I was a jaded reader of romantic mysteries. :)

Plot- I was interested the entire time with this mystery. The ending reveal was a surprise to me. I didn’t see that coming! I liked how the detective MMC and the FMC uncovered clues one at a time.
Some weaknesses: the motivation attributed to the killer was laughably weak. And the villain’s long monologue at the climax was so cliche!!! I get it- how else will the reader get all the details and connect all the dots? But there MUST be a better way. lol

Characters- I liked both of the characters fine, but I didn’t LOVE them.
The MMC was confident and competent, but missing something in the way he interacted with the FMC. Like he wasn’t totally sure if he loved her. And the FMC was exactly the same. She seemed to really like him, but then when he showed up at her home with dinner (and his brother, to introduce them), she almost didn’t let them in because she had to catch up on work. Like, really??? You’re going to take that stance? It was just kinda weird, like she’s not actually that into him.
Their behavior was just slightly off in a few scenes.

I really liked how the MMC wasn’t into casual one-night-stands. He said to his brother, “I’ve grown up and learned that casual relationships often have disastrous consequences.” I respected him more for that.

Romance- High chemistry. I really enjoyed the romance. It was just the right amount of romance to mystery/plot ratio.

But I wish they flirted more and that their relationship progressed at a slower pace. They kiss a couple times but hold back bc of Reasons. When the Reason is removed, he goes to her house and they immediately sleep together. Like, they hardly know each other at this point! It seemed too fast.
After a week of spending the nights at her house, he thinks to himself, “Maybe I should woo her. Our relationship can’t be all about the sex.” I prefer the wooing/dating/falling-in-love to happen first. :P

They ended Happy For Now, planning to move in together. I was bummed they weren’t planning to get married in the epilogue. I wasn’t entirely convinced they were going to stay together forever. Maybe it was simply a lack of character and relationship development.
I know that all sounds critical, but somehow I still really enjoyed the book. Haha. Don’t ask me- it’s just the vibe I felt. I think it’s the genre that I’m into.

Writing - Fine writing, but unusually detailed at times. Here is an example of the amount of detail this author included sometimes. (Thankfully it wasn’t all like this.)

She added that to the order on the screen, then read off my total.
I added a tip on the screen facing me, then slid my debit card into the reader and entered my PIN. Mina bagged up my cookie and handed it to me, then moved to the espresso machine to start my drink.
I stepped to the side and waited.

lol. Wow, that’s quite the detail! Haha

Content-

Language- infrequent sweating. One f-word (not used as a verb).
Spice- 1 explicit sex scene, sexual innuendo in other parts
Violence- murder, blood, gun shots (but not gratuitous)
Substance abuse- no
Spiritual/religious- no
Cover- Yikes.
POV- dual POV between FMC and MMC, first person
Cliffhanger- no
Format- KU

A great read that grabs your attention at the very beginning with a murder mystery that has your mind looking for clues trying to figure out who's the culprit and keeps you guessing til the end. I loved the characters and their chemistry. Pebbles was an adorable addition. I will definitely continue with this series.

Ashley A Quinn is one of my favourite authors. I’ve loved every single book she’s written, and I was so excited to get the Midnight Secrets ARC. Our MMC Ozzie was introduced toward the end of The Wagner Brigade series, and he is so swoony.

Claire finds a body in a house she’s going to sell, which means nothing can happen with Ozzie while she’s considered a witness. But as soon as Ozzie gets that green light to go after her, he’s literally immediately at her doorstep. He wastes no time. I loved their relationship, and even though it moves fast, I actually believed that they were each other’s ‘the one’ and I loved them so much.

The murder plot was so well thought out and planned. I had an inkling of the kind of person it could be, but not an actual character. And then a twist surrounding that right at the end brings it all out in the open and I didn’t see it coming. I’m really excited about reading Ellis’s book. A man with a bad and failed marriage in his rear view who’s insistent he’ll never have a serious relationship again? Yeah, he’s gonna be down bad.

Thank you Ashley for the ARC. This review is honest and voluntary.

Midnight Secrets
Stars: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Spice: 🌶️🌶️

Synopsis: Carrie is a sweet realtor who has built her own successful business. When she goes to take pictures of a home (not her usual m.o.), she finds the homeowners dead body on the master bedroom floor. Ozzie, the firm and tough detective who just moved to town, is the one who answers the call. All about business, Ozzie knows he can't get involved with the pretty realtor so he avoids all things, until he is taken off the case as main detective and placed on protection detail for the pretty realtor.

My thoughts: I am not normally a thriller/suspense type person, but this fell in the category of romance, too, and I liked it. I felt that it was a relatable story with some push/pull of the two characters. The characters themselves were well thought out and just melted into the book. If you like murder type books and happy ever after's, this is a book I would recommend reading. There's not much spice to it, but the suspense takes the cake!

Ozzie (Oscar) and Claire’s story is a thrilling romantic suspense set in Alaska. Though their first meeting is rather awkward and tense, neither fail to notice the other or the instant attraction they feel. Their second meeting is under terrible circumstances as Claire discovers the body of her client and Ozzie is the detective assigned to the case. With her dog’s (Pebbles), penchant for escaping, they soon meet again, when he finds Pebbles in his yard and Claire out in the cold looking for her. A break in at her home soon puts them on high alert. Ozzie suspects the break in is tied to the murder case. He reluctantly accepts her help in the investigation and discovers that Claire has hidden depths that make her even more appealing to him. Both are fighting their attraction until his Chief notices and makes a few changes to clear their way to dating each other. A couple more incidents make Ozzie even more aware that Claire is in grave danger. Sticking close to Claire is not a hardship as their intense chemistry soon leads to some very hot and steamy encounters. Keeping Claire safe from a killer who is determined to eliminate her is now Ozzie’s top priority.

This enthralling book gives readers a thrilling and twisty suspense along with a heartwarming romance. It is well worth reading and has my full recommendation.

I am a rather new fan of Ashely Quinn and I am enjoying her books. I normally go for sports romance, mostly hockey but I ventured out to these suspense novels and am not regretting it.

Oscar and Claire meet unexpectedly one morning while she is chasing after her Yorkie Pebbles when she pulls the escaping trick. Their first meeting was less than stellar. Their next meeting wasn't much better because Claire finds a dead body in the house she is getting ready to stage and list for sale. As they get to know one another during the case and the suspicious things that keep happening around Claire they develop feelings for one another. Oscar even becomes a fan of Pebbles.

You will really enjoy this read as I did and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series!

Such a good start for the series. I got into it fast and didn’t want to stop reading. Oscar and Claire were fantastic, had great tension, chemistry, and even if things moved quick, I totally believed it.. I really liked how he didn’t waste time once he could finally go for her, no drama, just action. The mystery part was also done really well. I had a few guesses, but the final twist actually surprised me. It was smart but not overcomplicated, which I appreciate. Kept me guessing but didn’t make my head hurt. A very enjoyable read. Thank you so much to the author for giving me the opportunity to read the book in advance, I received this for free and I'm leaving a honest review

I really enjoyed the book. It was a great mix of mystery, suspense and drama in a wonderful romance.

Realtor Claire shows to go stage a house and finds the home owner murdered. When detective Oscar turns up she knows him and doesn't like him.

These two did have chemistry but it was slow to build. The odd meetings and the tips she keeps giving to the police aka Ozzie put him off at the start but eventually they find a common ground, especially when trouble heads her way.

Simple type plot but a great layering of characters and events. This was so well done I look forward to more. Great book!

Ok, so I went back and forth between 3 and 4 stars. I loved the detailed police work and the twist of I didn’t know who the bad person was. Toward the middle the amount of hot and cold between the leads got a bit annoying. Just talk like adults, have a conversation about timing and feelings. However once they got together there was no more miscommunication which is a huge plus. That plus no 3rd act breakups and how sweet they were, and the details of the police work is why I ultimately gave it a 4 star. I believe I have read a few of her other books prior to joining good reads, so I’ll probably skim through those again just to track my reading. All in all I was a fan of this book!

A Suspenseful and Swoon-Worthy Small-Town Mystery

Midnight Secrets is a fast-paced romantic suspense that pulls you in from the first page. The mix of mystery, humor, and slow-burn romance makes it an addictive read. The chemistry between relatable, spirited Claire and the gruff but lovable Ozzie is charming, and the addition of Pebbles, the runaway dog, adds a delightful touch of warmth and chaos. Ashley A. Quinn does a great job balancing danger, emotion, and small-town charm. The twists kept me guessing, and the romance kept me rooting for the couple until the very end. A fun and thrilling read!

When the new hot investigator Ozzie sees Claire at her worst, she didn’t realise the impact he would come to have on her life. So she went about her day as usual. Well that was until she found a dead body in the house she was staging to sell.
Loved this first book in the Parker's Landing series. It has humorous bits in amongst a richly woven twisty suspense romance. The murderer hides themselves well. However, when they are revealed they have to deal with the sad twist at the end they created.
Roll on book two Claire’s best friends story.

- Romantic suspense
- Slow burn
- Small town

Wow, this book was so good! This is the first book in a new series, set in a small town in Alaska. Claire and Ozzie first meet when Claire's adventurous dog Pebbles gets out, but the meeting is not very smooth.

The next time they meet is under less than ideal circumstances - Claire discovers the homeowner whose house she is selling very much unalive. Now Ozzie is trying to work the case while keeping an eye on Claire as it seems someone thinks she saw or has something related to the case.

I was so drawn into this story. I could not put it down!

Oscar and Claire have a fun meet cute but their second encounter is far less fun as Claire discovers a murder victim and Oscar turns out to be the detective in charge and therefore despite their attraction he cannot have a relationship with a witness from the case. As their paths continue to cross, feelings grow and so does the danger to Claire, in particular from the unknown assailant. This is the first book of this new series and is really enjoyable and keeps your attention from start to finish as the intricate web of clues is weaved by the author.

A new series by Ashley Quinn, Parker’s Landing!

A new series is always hard to start reading but Ashley Quinn has always done a great job keeping me turning pages!
Here we meet Oscar and Claire when Claire finds herself inside what appears to be a horror show.
Oscar is the detective that is working on the case that has been brought to life and now it has drawn Claire in.

Read along and see how Oscar and Claire keep their relationship strictly professional until they can’t!

I am looking forward to what Ashley Quinn is bringing us next from Parker’s Landing!

This is a wonderful story between a realtor, a detective and a yorkie named Pebbles. The first dog I ever had was named Pebbles, so I was hooked from the start!
It takes place in a small town in Alaska called Parkers Landing. There is murder, mayhem, excitement, romance, and suspense- it’s all there. Ashley Quinn, you got me good with that ending – I was not expecting that! I loved this book.
If you enjoy stories with bad-ass female characters, sexy and protective alpha males, get this book you will not be disappointed. Now the wait begins for book 2, Mina’s story.

I really liked this book. Claire and Ozzie are great. And Pebbles almost stole the show. Living in Alaska and meeting a man in your robe and pick fuzzy slippers while chasing Pebbles is a fantastic introduction or is it? The book takes off after that. Murder, fire and mayhem oh and a moose attack. All in a days work.

I admit I devoured this book and loved every minute of it. I cannot wait for the next adventure in Parker's Landing.

I was provided with an Arc copy from Ms. Quinn and her publisher, so all comments are my own.

Claire is a real estate agent in Alaska. She loves her job and her life. One day she shows up to stage for pictures for the house and there is a dead body in the master bedroom. Ozzie just moved to town and is the lead detective on the case.

Claire and Ozzie met briefly in the beginning when Pebbles, Claire’s dog, got out and ran from her, but when they crossed paths again at the crime scene they didn’t recognize each other.

When they finally gave into temptation sparks flew.

The best part was the mystery behind the murder. Lots of twists and turns and sucked you right in!

This book was awesome

Claire was a real estate agent, that was just trying to get out the door to work. Pebbles had other plans and snuck out. After chasing her down in her robe and pink mules, she runs into Ozzie. It wasn't a pleasant first meeting. But the meeting later in the day, has it making it even worse. Especially when it involves a dead body. Can they get past their first meeting to be friendly towards each other?

This book had such a great pace and it flowed so well. Pebbles antics made it have some funny elements. The ending was fantastic.

Midnight Secrets was a cleverly written story, with a good storyline. It ticked along at a pleasant pace and had you guessing throughout the story as to who did the deed. The place was not so slow as to be boring and not so fast paced as to make you lose track of who is who or what is happening.
I highly recommend this story, it gave me an enjoyable read, and even I had not worked out who did it until near the end of the book, well done Ashley.

What a great who-done-it. The the clues to the murder in Midnight Secrets unraveled slowly, piece by piece and the killer, when revealed, proved to be a surprise. As Detective Ozzie worked the mystery, he also became enamored of Claire and vowed to keep her safe from harm. As the suspense ramped up, so did their love move to their HEA. This was a great first book in the new series by Ashley Quinn and I am looking forward to more books in this series.

Brilliant start to this new series starts you off laughing. I enjoyed the chance/surprise meeting of Oz & Claire with the help of pebbles. The sensational chemistry sets off steam & sizzles the pages as you read. Loved the secondary characters that add banter & laughter. An investigation that puzzles you as danger comes at Claire from unknown sources. Fantastic!

Claire and Ozzie must have been destined to meet. First her dog Pebbles tries to bring him home and then they meet again during a murder investigation. She helps him and he protects her, that sounds like a great way to start an relationship. I found the characters to be very interesting and I liked how the murder was solved.

A good solid read from start to finish. From the first meeting between Ozzie and Claire and through the murder investigation, the action is good and their relationship build gets stronger. Working through her part of the investigation and trying to keep the professional lines drawn balances well as their personal connection deepens.

This is the first book in the Parker’s Landing series. The storyline was gripping, with a part pace, a great storyline and suspense. The twists kept the pages turning.

Claire and Ozzie were great together, with intense chemistry. It didn’t take long for Ozzie to realize that Claire was someone special.

Murder, suspense, romance and so much more. All I wanted was to buy the house and relax. And of course why did he have to be the person that showed up to the scene. I was already embarrassed once in front of him. Claire and Ozzie are quite the pair and they will take you on quite an adventure. Enjoy

Claire & Ozzie are sweet realtor meets a grumpy detective after finding a murder victim in a house she is supposed to list. We get a murder mystery, some spice, a cute small town Alaska setting, and some fun side characters. Plot points were good and moved at a nice speed. Probably a 2.5 outta 5 on the spice level. Enjoyed it a lot!
