From the New York Times best-selling author of the Night Huntress series comes a breathtaking new journey to the dark side of desire.
The night is not safe for mortals. Denise MacGregor knows all too well what lurks in the shadows - her best friend is half-vampire Cat Crawfield - and she has already lost more than the average human could bear. But her family’s past is wrapped in secrets and shrouded in darkness - and a demon shape-shifter has marked Denise as prey. Now her survival depends on an immortal who lusts for a taste of her.
He is Spade, a powerful, mysterious vampire who has walked the earth for centuries and is now duty-bound to protect this endangered, alluring human - even if it means destroying his own kind. Denise may arouse his deepest hungers, but Spade knows he must fight his urge to have her as they face the nightmare together, because once the first crimson drop falls, they will both be lost.

Review of GraphicAudio version of this novel 9/20/25: As always, GA has created a fabulous performance. The cast of talented actors do a wonderful job, greatly enhancing a book that I already liked very much.
Review from 5/12/22:
A sexy, action-packed paranormal romance
I very much enjoy the novels featuring important side characters in the Night Huntress series because they are written as classic paranormal romances. They offer the alternating point of view of both the hero and the heroine, rather than only the first-person point of view of the heroine, which allows the reader to deeply get to know the mysterious heroes.
The fantasy world building around a vampire who is 4,500 years old is always going to be very difficult for an author to make believable. However, I like Kira and Mencheres so much that I thoroughly enjoyed this novel in spite of that problem. I have listened to this romance in audiobook form at least three times over the years since it was initially released, and I will definitely revisit it many more times in the future.
I'm not sure if I read this book when I was initially reading the Night Huntress series but I did enjoy stepping my foot back into this world. This time, instead of Cat and Bones being the ones that we follow on their high stakes journey, it is Spade and Denise! These two are the besties of Bones and Cat and I loved that they were able to get together! Of course the last time that we saw Denise it was with a tragic event happening, so seeing her get a story that ends in happiness was very nice. This involved some banter between our MMCs and we got some more flashbacks of Spades life as a human and how he met Bones. Vampire politics is again on display in this one and it is very nice to see things built upon that we already established. This book had me laughing and was just really enjoyable!
The spice in this book was also very nice. Spade and Denise both were kinda in some dry spells but managed to end that with each other. 4 out of 5 on my spice scale. Overall, I thought this was a great addition to the Night Huntress series and I really liked these characters. I think it shows that you can move on from grief after it happens and not forget those that are no longer with us. I loved seeing that displayed here. Spade was not trying to replace Denise's husband and she was not trying to replace his fiancee. They both just realized that they did deserve happiness and to move into a new type of love with someone else. Beautifully told and a great story. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed any of the other books in this series. Also if you just plain love vampires, and goofiness, then you will like this book! 4 out of 5 overall!!
First of all yes. You should read it. Second of all This audiobook?🥹 I loved it.
This book surprised me by how good it was since I usually don’t read books written in third person but I really enjoyed this one! The story, the characters the development. Everything just….fit. So this book earned its 5/5⭐️ from me and I’d say spice is a 0.5/🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️.
In this story you get to follow the human (or is she?) Denise McGragger and the vampire Spade. (Love the name! ♠️) she’s one day chased by a demon killing those close to her and now branded by him forced to chase her cousin. To help she has the vampire Spade who swore to never love again, especially not a human. But as danger threatens to take Denise from him he realises there is one human he could love again.
This story was so beautiful and I absolutely loved that the ending wasn’t what you’d think but had its own original twist. So if you’re thinking about reading this book, do it!
Basic Plot: Denise gets dragged back into the world of vampires by a demon who wants to find her long-lost ancestor who reneged on a deal.
Meh. I wasn't terribly into this one. I don't think I was terribly into it when I read it as a book, and listening to the Graphic Audio was enough to get me to revisit te story, but not enough to make me excited about the characters and their story.
I just wasn't really a fan of Denise and the story dragged a bit in the middle. It was still entertaining either way. Took me longer than usual to finish.
