Some truths are too dangerous to speak, unless you’re willing to risk everything.
Miss Sophia Rutland has mastered the art of invisibility, using her unremarkable status to secretly chronicle London’s elite as the infamous Lady Whispers. But when her investigations lead her to the enigmatic Duke of Atherley, she uncovers secrets far more perilous than mere gossip.
Henry Alford, Duke of Atherley, has spent years protecting his family's name while secretly hunting corruption within the ton. But his world tilts when he crosses paths with the sharp-eyed Miss Rutland unaware that the woman who could expose him may also be the only one who can save him.
In a world of masks and deception, truth is a deadly game and love is an even riskier one. As darkness closes in, Sophia and Henry must decide if risking everything for justice is worth the price… or if losing each other would be the greatest danger of all.
"The Mysterious Lady Whispers" is an enchanting Regency romance, around 70,000 words and offering a captivating read. No cheating, no cliffhangers, and a guaranteed happily-ever-after. If you love Regency and Victorian-era romance, this novel is for you.
Sophia, the daughter of a Baron and her friend Grace, whose father was a Cambridge professor, were colleagues in a secret endeavor to seek Justice among the upper classes.
Henry, the Duke of Atherly (I’m sure that spelled wrong…) is helping his younger sister with her debut as both parents are gone, and their father under mysterious circumstances. Considering that the two young ladies wrote about said mysterious circumstances in their scandal pages, it was inconvenient for Henry and Sophie to fall in love.
I very much enjoyed this regency romance, as it had a Scooby Doo kind of mystery vibe, which I found charming. Five stars.
This is the fourth book, by Amanda Stones, that I have read. I did enjoy it. It is very well-written and kept my interest as the relationship between Sophia and Duke Henry developed. There was mystery, danger, abductions and corruption before the villains were brought to justice. I am looking forward to reading Amanda's next story.
Sophia and her best friend Grace secretly wrote a scandal sheer called ‘Lady Whispers’. The sole purpose of their writings was to disclose corruption within the ton. Their new person of interest was the Duke of Atherley. It was rumored that his father was involved in dirty dealings before his death, and that the new Duke was following in his footsteps. Since Henry, the current Duke of Atherley, was at a ball chaperoning his younger sister Charlotte, the ladies set their snooping in motion. James Wentworth, Baron Shipton and Captain of the Hussars, was also in attendance, and since James was Henry’s cousin, and Grace was immediately drawn to him, they split up with Sophia following the Duke and Grace engaging the Baron in conversation. When their scandal sheet came out hinting at Henry and his late father’s misuse of power, Henry asked Mr. Fletcher, his investigator, to discover who was behind it….which he did, much to Henry’s dismay. However, the more she got to know him, the more certain Sophia was that Henry was not involved in any underhanded activities. Meanwhile her father, Baron Alwood, was insisting that Sophia allow the Earl of Glenmore, a man who made her skin crawl, to court her. As Sophia tried to avoid the Earl of Glenmore, and Henry tried to avoid Lady Clarissa, whose parents kept pushing her at him, they developed feelings for each other. What follows is a story filled with social events, parental interference, mystery, threats, danger, and blooming romances. There are sweet and humorous moments, as well as ugly and terrifying ones. You can feel the connection between Sophia and Henry, and the energy between Grace and James practically vibrates off the page. The ancillary characters range from evil to doting, and the unassuming Mr. Fletcher gets to save the day. In the end, the ladies silence ‘Lady Whispers’ in favor of enjoying love, friends and family. I found this to be enjoyable and entertsining, and I loved the Extended Epilogue.
If you love mysteries and romance, then this is the book for you. All this will certainly keep you turning the pages as you try to figure out what will happen next. The extended epilogue was a little mild after all the excitement in this book.
