TL;DR: A disappointing return to Black Rock Falls. 3/5 Stars.
Strong opening, but the plot lost steam, and the main character was frustrating.
I've followed this series from book one. I honestly didn't expect to be writing this kind of review, but here we are.
The Premise
Fear for her life by D.K. Hood takes us back to the fictional alpine town of Black Rock Falls, Montana, aka Serial Killer Central. The story is told in the third person, predominantly from Sheriff Jenna Alton's perspective. It also alternates between the perspectives of some supporting characters, including her (now) husband and Deputy David Kane.
Plot Progression
"We're all going to die." The prologue's first five words pulled me into this story, which started with a bang (literally and figuratively). It opens with an explosion at the state penitentiary in Deer Lodge, Montana, causing a fire in the maximum security wing. This sets the tone for everything that follows: a missing prison guard; four dangerous inmates, who escaped en route to Black Rock Falls County, loose in the wilderness and heading towards Jenna's jurisdiction. One of them, . Unfortunately, the middle of the book loses steam despite a big reveal . It read like boxes were being checked off: rising action, climax, falling action, resolution...check, check, check, check.
What I didn't like
Jenna annoyed me in this story.
● She was unreasonable: Despite being heavily pregnant, she kept insisting on joining the manhunt (an impulsive decision that feels reckless and tone-deaf to her team's concerns).
● She came off as being very controlling: She claims to trust her team, but her actions suggest otherwise. Case in point: when someone got shot and called in their shooting, the team walked her through what happened. I almost threw my Kindle when she still asked, "Why didn't you notify me the moment the call came in?"
● Lastly, her treatment of Carter felt abrasive and unjustified.
These dynamics threw me off, especially as a longtime fan who previously admired her strength.
Unpopular opinion: .
Sadly, I'm no longer invested in the characters.
In light of the above, I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars. I've already purchased the next book, but that may be where I step away from this series.
My Rating Breakdown:
● Suspense/Pacing- 3
● Intrigue/Plot Complexity - 3
● Character Depth/Motivation - 3
● Twists/Surprises - 4
