Macavity & Me Mysteries #1

Why Me? Chimeras, Conundrums and Dead Goldfish: A Quirky Cozy Mystery Whodunit

Rate this book
A missing corpse. A cantankerous cat. Good-looking bad guys.Tourist Bryn Baczek discovers a body at the bottom of a ravine in Scotland. She goes for help, but when she returns with a rescue team, the body of biotech scientist Jared Blaine is gone.

Bryn’s vacation ends, but her troubles are just beginning. Blaine had developed new ways to introduce human cells into animals to grow organs for transplants. Greedy biotech companies hope to profit from this controversial chimera research, while radical activist groups vehemently oppose it.

Rumors that Bryn made off with the scientist’s laptop make her a target. Although not as bad as a horse head in her bed, the unnatural death of her goldfish is a threat she can’t ignore. She goes into hiding on her 40-foot sailboat home with her cantankerous cat Macavity. Keeping a low profile becomes complicated when Macavity slips out to explore his new surroundings.

Can Bryn prevent the scientist’s research from ending up in the hands of a group trafficking in illegal organ sales? Or will she become the next victim?

In Greek mythology the chimera was a bad omen. In Why Me? Chimeras, Conundrums and Dead Goldfish it’s a motive for murder.

Bryn Baczek is on vacation in Scotland, alone because her friend canceled at the last minute to spend quality time with her ‘new’ boyfriend. Even though everything she’s read warns her to not go hiking in the Highlands alone, Bryn does it anyway. While hiking in the pouring rain, she discovers a dead body. She tries to call the authorities, but she can’t find any cell service. So she leaves the dead man and walks quite a ways before calling. She shows the rescue team where she left the dead man, only he’s disappeared. Weird. She does a little digging and discovers the dead man is a scientist residing in Seattle, her hometown. When rumors start flying that Bryn has the dead man’s laptop with his research on it, her life is in peril. They’ll stop at nothing to get their hands on the research, no matter who they have to kill to get it. Can Bryn stay one step ahead of the criminals and unearth who they are, or will she be crying why me?

Why Me?: Chimeras, Conundrums, and Dead Goldfish is a delightful cozy mystery from start to finish. Bryn is an excellent amateur detective who doesn’t scare easily. The mystery behind the missing body and laptop kept me ripping through the pages. Once I started, I couldn’t stop reading. Descriptive narration with quirky characters makes this cozy mystery a must-read. Charlotte Stuart has a gift for mystery writing with plenty of humor and flawed characters. This was my first book by her and let me tell you, I will be reading more. Such a lovely cozy to curl up to with a cup of tea. Highly recommend!

Favorite Quote or Character:
Bryn. She’s such a fun character to read. Her inner dialogue had me in stitches. Her fish outta water circumstances and how she dealt with it all sealed my affection for her. A great character, full of humor and wit.

This is a delightful and quirky new mystery and it will definitely keep you on your toes.

Bryn stumbles across a dead body while on vacation in Scotland and she never could have imagined what would happen when she returned home.  Some bad people think she took something from the dead man's backpack and they want it back.  Sadly, she doesn't have it but these people will stop at nothing to retrieve the item(s).

We are introduced to some engaging characters that keep the story interesting.  Bryn has two good friends, Sophie and Logan.  Logan lives on a boat near hers with his partner Judd.  The good thing about this partnership is that while Logan is a bit of a wildcard, Judd manages to balance his personality and ground him.  Sophie is a good friend, but a bit of a flake IMHO.  She bailed on a trip for a guy that she just met?  Then there is Ben, a hunky detective that I think might have a thing for Bryn but only time will tell.  There is a wildcard - Keith.  He is rather suspicious with some of his actions, but is he a bad guy or a good guy?

The author does a great job of throwing many red herrings into the mix.  While I kinda suspected the killer, I didn't have a lot to go on and it was more of a gut feeling.

I think this is going to make an interesting series and I can't wait to see what is on tap next for Bryn and the gang.

We give this 4 paws up.

What makes Charlotte Stuart's Why Me such a captivating book is the mystery and danger that surround it. Bryn Baczek finds a body while hiking in Scotland-or did she? Upon discovering that the body was not found, the authorities begin to doubt her story. It is a mystery following her move back to Seattle. The investigation she undertakes involves biomedical research, protesters, and industrial espionage, resulting in her life being endangered. Characters and situations are vividly drawn and believable by Ms. Stuart, even the animals! Featuring a strong female protagonist, this is an engaging contemporary mystery you won't want to miss!

This cozy mystery starts in Scotland, but mostly takes place in Seattle. Bryn's vacation to Scotland is marred by finding a dead body. After checking his driver's license and calling the police, she finds he's from Seattle. Once back home, Bryn discovers he was a scientist doing research that drew protesters.

Lots of action, many decisions, help from good friends, and a few other cinnamon roll characters...will Bryn solve the case or end up saying, "Why Me?"

My third cozy by this author and quite entertaining. The book is set in Seattle and the main character, Bryn Baczek, is a single woman, self-employed consultant, who lives on a sailboat. While vacationing alone in Scotland and out hiking, she finds the body of a scientist with a backpack and wallet that says he is from Seattle. Feeling like she is being watched, she walks back on the trail to contact help. Of course, when help arrives, the body is gone and everyone is treating her like she is losing it. Determined to find out who this missing scientist is, she returns to Seattle and is soon involved in scientific and corporate intrigue and some very bad people looking for a missing laptop. And they think she has it. Nice pace, interesting characters and humor and even a cat named McCavity. I've read all three of Ms. Stuart's mysteries. While they are all stand-alones, any one of them would make the basis for a great series.

Cute, fast paced mystery set in Scotland and Seattle. I enjoyed the main character, Bryn, and her orange cat, Macavity. Bryn is very inquisitive and is determined to find out what happened to the body she finds while hiking in Scotland. Her friends Logan and Judd are also helping her, as Bryn becomes more involved. Thank you to Voracious Readers Only and the author for this copy.

Basic premise: Bryn is a consultant on vacation in Scotland. She stumbles upon the dead body of a scientist who is later found missing when she calls in the authorities. Upon arriving home, she does a bit of investigating into who the man was and what would warrant killing him. Her inquiries are noticed by the men who killed him and thus her life is suddenly in jeopardy.

The plot of this was quite intriguing. Although, I could not buy that some bad guys would fly all the way from Scotland to Seattle to take care of Bryn after her discovery of the dead body.

It took me while to really get into this. It is only book one so there should probably be a bit of a media kit’s worth of intel about who Bryn is and what she is all about. I never quite understood her connection to Logan who seems like he will be a recurring character if this is to be a series.

I felt like this book needed a bit more meat to it. It flew by quickly but I didn’t feel a good connection to anyone. I think the Interpol guy would make a good recurring character but I didn’t get a good feeling about who he was. And Detective Ben has to be my favorite character in the mix.

I think book two will show us more about who Bryn is and what this series will be all about. Really digging what I read but with the shaky beginning and the skimpy character info, I couldn’t give it a higher rating. I do think this book deserves a better title that describes what it is all about. Vacation with Death comes to mind but I am sure there is something much better that will help sell this better.

Looking forward to the next book in the series, for sure!

I received this as a gift from the author for an honest review.

Really enjoyed this book. Bryn Baczek, our protagonist, is hiking in Scotland when she comes across a dead man! Really!! This doesn't add at all to a vacation that was going down the toilet from the get-go. First problem..Sophie, her forever friend, planned this trip, then bailed because of "Mr. Right". Seems like Sophie is still living up to her rep of questionable choices. Add in rain (Scotland), cute and mysterious guys (both Scotland and the USA), and the disappearance of the dead body BEFORE the police arrive (makes murder hard to prove) and Bryn can't decide if she's losing her mind or not. Killing Sophie might be a viable option when she gets back to the states!
Since she can't prove she saw a murdered man, and she had helped herself to a business card when she checked his wallet upon finding the body, dang the awful cell reception in Scotland which forced her to leave it and find service, she finds herself drawn to prove that Blaine had been murdered.
This book will get you thinking about replacement organ research, and secret labs. Kind of like today's Covid-19's pandemic.
I received this book in a giveaway initially, then, because I had a combination of new computer and new Kindle, I couldn't figure out how to load it. I wanted to read it, so I got it from Amazon too.
Really did enjoy it, and highly recommend it. I hope Bryn continues her adventures so I can accompany her and her friends.

Why Me?: Chimeras, Conundrums, and Dead Goldfish is another fun and crazy cozy mystery from Charlotte Stuart. I love the way Charlotte Stuart writes her main characters. I embrace them as my friends right away.

When I started the book and saw that poor Bryn was caught in the pouring rain while hiking in Scotland, my heart went out to her. You know why? Because that would totally be me. Not that I am a big hiker or anything…neither is Bryn! She’s just trying to prove that she doesn’t need her friend Sophie, who flaked out on the trip at the last minute for a guy of all things, to enjoy the trip they’d planned. Well, not only does Bryn not enjoy the hike, she does not enjoy finding a dead body who disappears before help arrives!

You can see Bryn’s conundrum. The rescue team thinks she’s delusional and the guy must have been alive and walked off. But she knows what she saw. A dead guy who just happens to live in Washington state near Bryn! More conundrums occur when the bad guys think Bryn must be connected to the dead guy since they were in Scotland at the same time. Furthermore, they think she’s got his research!

The things Bryn goes through in Why Me? will have you laughing out loud while feeling sorry for her…and her goldfish. I love her friend Logan. He’s protective of Bryn while going along with her crazy investigations that she undertakes even though her detective friend Ben tells her to stay out of it. Who ever stays out of it in cozy mystery books?

This is a book you’ve got to read yourself in order to appreciate the author’s sense of humor. Read it free with Kindle Unlimited!

Although, this book is part of the series, it could be read as stand-alone. The author did a wonderful job recapping a few details about the characters and events from the previous book, so you won't feel like you missed anything if you start with book 2.

Fun facts about the main character: Bryn is a consultant who lives on a boat with her cat, Macavity. Bryn now and then finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery and in some quite sticky situations when she tries to solve those mysteries.

Read and find out:
• How Macavity the cat and Bryn are similar in their appearance
• Why Bryn's goldfish is called Bubbles IV (or is it Bubbles V...)

These books had so many things I loved about them. Humor is just top notch! You'll love being in Bryn's head. She is intelligent, witty and kind and she has the best of friends, Logan, Judd and Sophie! The setting is so unique and cozy. Bryn lives on a boat and works in a small office across the street. And let's not forget the coffee! The abundance of it in these stories just makes me want to grab a cup of my own java and snuggle up with the book.

I did enjoy the plot in book one slightly more. But both books were an absolute delight to read. They were entertaining, fun, and quick reads! They are also available on #kindleunlimited, so I highly recommend grabbing a copy for the upcoming cozy mystery season. I hope you enjoy these reads as much as I did.

Why Me? was quite a crazy, funny, cozy mystery! Poor Bryn is on holiday in Scotland hiking in the middle of one of our lovely downpours surrounded by midges - but the midges are hte least of her problems when she finds a body at the bottom of a ravine! She traverses the rugged land to get to the body to make sure if they are dead or alive, when she get spooked by a sudden feeling that she is being watched from afar, she scrambles back to the car park and calls in mountain rescue team only to discover that the body has gone! They believe the guy fell hit his head came round and walked off, but Bryn knows that is not the case but without a body there is nothing the rescue team can do.

After her quite eventful trip in Scotland Bryn heads home to Seattle where she discovers that the body she found belonged to a scientist who's research disappeared along with his body. It comes to light that he was working on some question of ethics Chimera research. With many suspects from the activist groups to other scientists wanting to be the first with his discoveries, Bryn soon get caught up in it all when who ever killed him thinks that she has the research!

I absolutely loved this story, that characters were funny, likeable and engaging and the twists that were thrown in to throw you off were done well, I had no idea who it was that was after Bryn and I was surprised when it was all revealed.

A trip to Scottland! So what if it was during midge season? Not sure what is a midge. But, hey, a free trip’s a free trip. The last thing one would expect during a hiking excursion is to find a body. Crap! Why me?

And the character keeps on repeating that same thought even as he’s trying to climb down the hills to get to the body. Except, by the time she gets down there….well…the body was gone. And somehow some anonymous groups think she may have something belonging to the victim. And they might do anything to get it from her.

I thought this was an interesting, little mystery. The writing was pretty good. I wish the premise would’ve been a tad simpler. But I liked how this down-to-earth character handled this jumbled mess she found herself in.

Mystery and danger abound in Charlotte Stuart’s marvelous book, Why Me? The appealing and witty main character, Bryn Baczek, discovers a body while hiking in Scotland—or did she? The authorities doubt her story when the body can’t be found.
She returns home to Seattle but the mystery follows. Her investigation leads into a controversial world of biomedical research, protesters, and industrial espionage, and consequently puts her life at risk.
Ms. Stuart has a gift for making her characters (even the animals!) seem authentic and the situations and responses believable. If you’re looking for an engaging contemporary mystery with a wonderful female protagonist, look no further!

This was a lot of fun! It's a mystery, mainly set in Seattle. Bryn lives on a houseboat with a big orange cat. She's got great neighbours, fun friends, and she goes through a lot of goldfish. Not on purpose though, she's not a monster. The characters were well done and the story was interesting.

I don't know if this is a series or not, but I hope so! I'd like to read more mysteries by this author, and I'd really like to see that cat again.

Good Mystery for fans of Agatha Christie

This seemed like a modern take on the Agatha Christie book "Why didn't they ask Evans?". It takes you on a long story starting in Scotland then coming back to Seattle. Like Christie, there is a lot of dialogue that has nothing to do with the mystery and I'm not sure that anyone could really have figured out the who done it before the ending.

I had a gap between reading the whole book, and I have totally forgotten what the book was about? I may read it again, but I recognised some names in my area so it was set in Scotland. But sadly due to this break in reading, I have no recollection of the novel :(

A gripping mystery, following the main character discovering a body in Scotland while hiking, and as she reports it, the body disappears!
The book definitely took some unexpected turns. Some parts of the story felt like they dragged on too long, but overall a fun mystery.
There were a few grammatical errors in my copy, but nothing major.

Charlotte Stuart is a new author to me and I really enjoyed this. The characters were nicely fleshed out and the story moved nicely, although it was a little disjointed in places. Despite that, the story drew me in so that I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened next which is always a good thing. I'll definitely be looking out for more of her books.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

What an interesting cozy this is! The title alone is enough to draw your attention making it quite fun to run across the parts of the story that make it fit. We meet Bryn as she goes on vacation. Things are going great until she just happens to stumble across a dead body while hiking alone in the middle of a downpour. By the time she goes for help and returns the body in no where to be found which is bad enough but then some bad guys start thinking she might have the dead guys laptop. What follows is quite fun as the mystery unfolds while the danger level increases. Full of fascinating characters, crafty clues, and a few unexpected twists that make it a great read for cozy mystery fans. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.
