Four Kings Security #2

Be Still My Heart

Rate this book
Former Special Forces medical sergeant Russell “Red” McKinley knows a thing or two about wounds, like the fact some can take a lifetime to heal, if they heal at all. The scars Red carries run deep, and living with PTSD often means battling the memories of his past. Injuries he received while working an executive protection case with fellow Kings and co-owners of Four Kings Security, have once again forced past heartaches to the surface, but Red is determined not to let it derail his blossoming romance with sweet and sexy fashion photographer Lazarus Galanos.

Laz can’t deny there’s something special developing between him and Red, but Laz has wounds of his own. He’s hesitant to jump into a new relationship after his recent explosive breakup. Experience has taught Laz to doubt his judgement when it comes to men. Guys who seem too good to be true, usually are, and no one appears more perfect than Red.
When an attempt is made on Laz’s life, Red is determined to keep him safe. Laz may not be a client, and Red is still off duty, but Laz is one of their own, and nothing means more to the Kings than family. While an investigation is underway, Red and Laz are growing closer, but can they find a way to help each other heal and take a chance on love, or will their fears and insecurities cost them more than their future together?

I really love this author and everything she writes. I really enjoyed the previous book in this series "Love in Spades", and this one was just as good...maybe even a bit better ;) That probably has to do with the fact, that I am getting to know these "Kings" better, and as a result I am falling in love with each and every one of them !!

https://www.google.com/search?q=falling in love gif

This time it's Red and Laz' turn. Those of you who have read the first book, already know Red and Laz, and those who haven't should go back..and read the first book. I think it would be best to read this series in order, you might get confused otherwise :)

https://www.google.com/search?biw=1517

It was very obvious in the first book, that these two guys shared some amazing chemistry. Now.. with Laz his life being in danger and Red trying to keep him safe, they have a chance to explore these sparkles between them... And boy do they. I was quite surprised with the dirty mouth on Laz !!

"Fuck me until all I can feel is your big, hard cock inside me, imprinting me, marking me. Leave your mark on me so everyone knows I'm yours. Always yours."

Gerelateerde afbeelding

I am a huge fan of "dirty talk" so, of course I read this book with a big smile on my face ;)

I don't want to spoiler too much of the book, so I am gonna keep this one short ;) There is some little misunderstanding between these two towards the end, but thankfully it wasn't stretched out, and both of them came to their senses really fast.

I am extremely happy with this series and I definitely recommend it to everyone who loves a little mystery, fun, steam and action in their gay romance !!

I myself can't wait for Lucky and Mason's book, because I have a feeling that one is gonna be my favorite....although I am sure King's book is gonna rock too !!!

Highly recommended !!

This series is proving to be consistently fun, steamy, and exciting.

Here, we follow the budding relationship between Four Kings Security member Russell ‘Red’ McKinley and fashion photographer Lazarus ‘Laz’ Galanos.

Red and Laz initially met in book one (Love in Spades), forming a special bond when Red provided comfort and support to Laz after Laz was hurt by his now ex-bf at Colton’s pool party. The sparks between these two ignited at first sight and they quickly connected in a haze of hurt-comfort goodness. Unfortunately (or fortunately), Red’s injuries at the end of the first story resulted in a romance roadblock that kept these two from exploring their sudden and intense feelings too quickly.

Where this sequel picks up, a few months have passed while Red has been recuperating. Now with Red all mended and Laz finally over his ex and their abysmal relationship, Red and Laz are reunited for the readers delight, quickly beginning a tentative new relationship at the same time as they find themselves thrown head first into a new life threatening situation – one in which Laz’s life is quite literally in the cross hairs.

In between dodging bullets and trying to uncover who is out to get Laz, Red and Laz together are all things sweetness and sunshine. Both characters are such good men, each owning huge hearts they are eager to give to one another to care for and cherish, permanently. They truly only have eyes for one another from the moment they meet and it honestly doesn’t take long for them to fall into blissful coupledom.

The potential downfall of this is that their relationship comes across as a little too easy at times, with limited angst and drama befalling them as a couple. Although each man has his own demons to face from the past, this story doesn’t really dig too deep into that stuff, instead staying on the lighter, and more sexy, happy and hopeful, side of things. In fact, aside from one frustrating miscommunication moment towards the end, their coming together was very simple and easy, mostly consisting of longing looks and tentative touches that quickly advanced into an insatiable passion that resulted in a truly solid HFN.

Although this series falls under the umbrella of romantic suspense and features characters dealing with a myriad of serious personal issues, such as PTSD and (past) rape, I still found this story super light in the angst department. To me, the characters are a little bit too exaggerated and the situations a little bit too extreme. I figure this is the intentional tone set by Cochet in this particular series, and as such I’m enjoying it for what it is – a stimulating, sassy, and damn sexy romantic suspense series.

3 Consistent Cochet Fluff Stars

I can totally see both sides for those who love and don’t love this series, and I’ll basically leave it at that.

What made this story was Red. He is the biggest teddy bear who ever teddied, and he’s been crushing hard on fashion photographer Laz. When someone wants Laz dead, it’s the perfect opportunity for Red to get close to protect the man he’s falling hard for.

Light on the angst despite some heavy topics, this was never short on the smexy and had some nice dashes of dirty. This also had some good group dynamics which were expanded upon more here and always brought out the fun and mischief.

It can be a boon or a bane when reading a favorite author, and when it’s not part of said author’s most well loved work, there’s a chance for the latter. For me, everything else doesn’t come close in comparison, as this is not and never will be THIRDS. Is it fair? No… but it is what it is and overall, this sufficed. Regardless, I for sure am not missing Mason and Lucky’s story which is up next!

Unpopular opinion alert!

I loved the first book in this series and now I’m so disappointed I didn’t love this one. I can see why lots of people will probably like this, but for me it was just missing something.

I loved how Red and Laz met in the previous book, but that was actually the most interesting about their entire relationship. I was really interested in them in the first book, but here? Not so much.

Red and Laz met during a party at Colton’s in Love in Spades. It was there that Red rescued Laz when he hit his head and fell into the pool after his (then) boyfriend pushed him.

It is now several weeks later and the two haven’t spoken for a while. Neither is sure why that is, so that’s why Ace interferes and Red ends up at one of Laz’s photoshoots (he’s a photographer). When Red asks Laz out to dinner, Laz immediately says yes. But then suddenly they’re in the middle of a shooting and it looks like someone is trying to kill Laz.

Red is still on leave after his accident, so he offers to guard Laz while the police look for the attacker….

I was really looking forward to this book ever since I read the lovely hurt/comfort parts in Love in Spades between Red and Laz. But here I felt quite bored with the whole relationship. I felt that there was just nothing interesting about these guys. I actually did like them as individuals, but together they were kinda boring. I thought the jokes between them felt forced and the conversations could not hold my interest.

And while I love sweet characters it can sometimes feel like overkill when we have two sweet characters. These guys were sugary sweet with each other from the start, and all the sharing emotions and tears and just everything was a bit too much for me to handle.

And when I got to ‘the conflict’ I just wanted it to be over. I got where they were both coming from, but I didn’t felt it added something to the story. It was simply there because these guys apparently needed a conflict. I didn’t like it.

So while I do still like this series, Red and Laz were not interesting enough to hold my attention. I did still like all the guys though.

Be Still My Heart is the second book I've had the pleasure of reading by Charlie Cochet as well as the second book in the Four Kings Security series and while I loved the first I think I may have even liked this one more! I feel like so many of my good reviews tend to basically say the same thing, but that's because there's certain things I really tend to like and if the book has them then I'm going to like/love it and there's not much more to say. The writing is fun, easy and flows well. The characters are fun, sweet, likable, and sexy.

I really loved getting to see Ace and Colton again and Ace's shenanigans and nuttiness and everyone's funny reactions to him. I already knew Laz and Red were adorable together from the first book and it was awesome seeing them officially come together in this story. I'm also very excited for the next book as there were little moments and bits of info dropped to set up the other love stories.

This could be read as a stand alone book but reading book one first makes it much better.

“Oh my God, he cooks too? Why aren’t you chaining him to your radiator?”
“First, this is Florida. Where am I going to find a radiator? Second, because that would be illegal.”

So, I didn't really have a problem with the romance in this book. I actually kind of liked it. It's not gonna be my favourite but it was definitely better than the first one.

I also loved the amazing group of friends this book has and their relationships with each other. Their interactions with each other were making me smile throughout the book. To say it was OTT would be an understatement. But not gonna lie, I didn't hate it.

Now, let's come to the reason this book is not getting more stars. The mystery/plot in this book was so weak I could almost cry. Literally saw that coming from a mile away. It was probably the most obvious plot twist I have ever read.

Honestly the only thing that's gonna make me read the next book is my curiosity about the next couple. I'm sensing a pattern here. Charlie cochet is just giving me breadcrumbs of the next relationship so I can't help but read the next book in the series even though I'm not in love with the previous books. Also, there's my compulsive need to finish a series once I've started it. So ig there's two reasons. ✨

Love in Spades introduced readers to Four Kings Security, a security company that specializes in everything from armed transport and investigations, to cyber intelligence, and executive protection. Owned by men who served together in Special Forces until they lost half their unit, the "Four Kings" are Ward "King" Kingston, Eduardo "Lucky" Morales, Anston "Ace" Sharpe, and Russell "Red" McKinley.

When professional photographer Laz finds himself needing Four Kings protection after someone tries to kill him during a photo shoot, it's Red, once again, who makes sure nothing bad happens to him. The chemistry between Red and Laz that began in Love in Spades becomes even more palpable, and HOT, in Be Still My Heart! Laz and Red are perfect for one another, but they both have some baggage; Red's PTSD and Laz's trust issues definitely come into play.

Be Still My Heart is told in a dual POV, has a great banter, plenty of action, steam, and suspense all wonderfully narrated by Greg Tremblay, under his sexier Boudreaux brand, to keep you entertained for hours.

This is a really fun series to listen to with Greg giving a great performance with an easy pace, interesting characters voices that are easy to recognize, great accents...it's a treat to listen to!

Be Still My Heart is low angst, sexy, with some action and suspense, has a happy ending, and has terrific narration.

I'm really looking forward to Lucky and Mason's story coming soon to audio.

Update to review after listening to the Audiobook...

Audio - Greg Boudreaux is Amazing. I Loved this narration. He does such a fantastic job with every book he is given and this one was no different. His voices for Laz and Red were great, totally perfect for each character. And I cannot wait until we get Mason and Lucky's book next too..

I Love this author and really don’t think it’s even possible that they could write a “bad” book. This book was Awesome, and I enjoyed it just as much as the first book in the series. You should definitely for sure read book one “Love in Spades” before you take a crack at this book though because Colton and Ace’s book is hilariously great as well; and you will get to know and learn some details from that book that will lead you right into this one.

I love all of the Kings we’ve met so far. I’m glad we get to see bits and pieces of each of them in all of these books because learning about them and their pasts and how their lives are so entwined together is so much fun to see, they all are amazing men. This is definitely 100% becoming one of my new favorite series and can see myself coming back and re-reading these books numerous times in the future.

And…. OH. MY. GAWWWDD… Before I even get into these main characters can I just mention… Spencer and Quinn… If you don’t know who they are run and Grab the book “Beware of Geeks Bearing Gifts” it’s a really funny and cute short book by this same author. I’ve read and listened to that book more times than I can even go back and count. But… They are mentioned in this book. And when I saw that I Totally kind of freaked out more than a bit... I just love them so much and I’ve always hoped we would get to see more of them at some point… Well… Wish Granted….

Red and Laz….

This book is named perfectly “Be Still my Heart” because omg I felt myself actually thinking that a few times while reading this book. Laz and Red are completely perfect for each other and have crazy hot chemistry together. It’s almost a love at first sight with them, they just have that kind of connection to each other. And wow, ok, Laz’s dirty talking when he and Red got together was completely unexpected and ridiculously hot in this book. The main stumbling block they both seem to have though is Trust. Trust is hard for the two of them because of past relationships and being hurt. Laz is dealing with the repercussions from a previous relationship that we actually see the demise of in book one. And Red is dealing with previous lovers not being able to handle his PTSD and his strong bond to the other kings. I think as long as they can get past all of that and communicate their feelings together it will be smooth sailing from then on. I really liked the storyline and plot we get in this book and I was kind of surprised and taken aback with the ending of this book, I wasn’t really expecting it to play out the way it did so that was a good little twist for the author to throw in.

I am completely and totally ready for the next book in the series and cannot wait to see who is next up, and I honestly don’t really care whose book it is. I just want more of these Kings.

Be Still my Heart continues the story of Red and Laz who met in Love in Spades, there was an instant spark between them but Laz was dating a MAJOR JERK (I HATE Bryan) and something happens to Red near the end of Love in Spades.

Three months later and with some meddling from Ace and a lunch delivery, Red turns up at a photo shoot on the beach and who is the photographer yep a now single Laz, mayhem occurs and Red rescues Laz again.

Kings Security decides to protect Laz as Red is not officially working, he and Laz move in together at Colton's beach house / safe house (thanks to Ace) and they begin to get to know each other.

These two have their issues to work through if they want to have a future together not just have lots of sex.

As with the first book in this series this is filled with action, fun and lots of steam and the epilogue was hilarious, I love Ace and King together.

I cannot wait to read Lucky and Mason's story I have a feeling it will be full of sexual tension.

Be Still My Heart is Red and Laz's story. My two biggest complaints with book one were the inconsistencies in the characters' behaviors and the choppy progression of the romance. That wasn't an issue in this book, but it was nowhere near as entertaining, and the middle reeeally dragged. Even listening to the audio book couldn't prevent my mind from constantly wandering. Thankfully, it did pick up toward the end. 2.5 stars

I just LOVE this series in audiobook format! Greg Boudreaux is sheer perfection, bringing all of the characters to life and literally making me LOL in my car at how perfectly timed all of the snark and humor is.

This is Red and Laz's story, who we met back in the first book of the series. Laz is Colton's friend, a fashion photographer, and is trying to move past his horrible relationship with his cheating ex. Red is one of the main owners of the Four Kings security business, and he and Laz have had that spark between the two of them ever since they first met.

I loved the chemistry between these two characters. When they are first having to spend time together, I loved them learning about each other, how attentive they were, and also how explosive they were in bed together. There was a bit of conflict, naturally, and it almost got to the point where I was going to get upset - I am NOT a fan of the big misunderstanding when characters just won't TALK to each other, but the emotion between the two and how much Red and Laz were already committed to the other so quickly yet so naturally, it wound up being okay for me.

I also loved how great the interactions were between all of the Kings and Laz and Colt. There is a real sense of family and love and support there with how they give each other crap, and Ace is still hilarious and his awful jokes at the end were the best, and I can't wait for Lucky and Mason's story to be on audio.

Love this series! Highly recommend it, and read in order since you shouldn't miss a minute of these guys!

Now I just have to figure out who will be paired up with the rest of the men. Gio has to come into the storyline somehow - with King maybe? And there's Joker, he needs a story with someone. I haven't read the 3rd book yet, I'm hoping it will be in audio this month and I can listen to it then.

It took me almost a week to finish this 8h audiobook and if it wasn’t for the great narration I probably wouldn’t have made til the end credits.

Don’t get me wrong - I love Laz & Red. Really! But their story (even though totally sweet) was just lame… and therefore to long. This book could’ve easily been a novella or a side story in one of the other books and we all could’ve avoided the unnecessary drama near the end.

Despite that I give it 3 stars bc I love the characters- in fact, all of them, Ace (and Colton) made me laugh again real hard and the sex was hot ✌️

So I hop on to the next book in hopes that I can love Join the Club and Luckys and Masons story and continue with this series. So, fingers crossed!

Another quality addition to the series

This is another great romance in the Four Kings series, focusing on former medic sergeant Red and fashion photographer Laz.

It was a lot less angsty than I was expecting from the blurb and Red's PTSD didn't play as big a part as I thought it would. The majority of the story plays out as a bit of a romantic suspense when someone tries to shoot Laz at a photo shoot.

I also have to say, of all the scenarios I was envisioning, the actual villain didn't come on my radar until almost just before the big denouement, so bravo Charlie for that.

The book's sexy as sin, of course, and Laz surprises himself with just how much he wants to get filthy with Red. There's a wee bit of dramady, understandably to do with trust issues, but it didn't feel overblown.

Now, bring on Lucky and Mason!

Not bad for a book that I initially thought I'd skip.

So here's the thing: I'm not overly fond of tropes that take place in the fashion industry, no idea why. I'm not watching "Project Runway" or the like either, because all that OTT shrieking and drama that seems to follow models and those who work with them makes me roll my eyes. And yes, I know that might be a prejudice, but that's how these shows (and books) usually work.

And that's why I initially planned to skip the story between Laz, the fashion photographer who dumped his model-boyfriend in the previous book, and Red, one of the men in Kings Security. I wanted to dive right into book 3, but it seemed that I missed so much "foreplay" between Mason (the cop) and Lucky, another Kings Security member, that I thought I'd skim through book 2 and focus on the parts where Mason and Lucky appear.

So bearing that in mind, I was pleasantly surprised that this book wasn't as boring as I thought. A mystery writer this author is not - I was pretty sure right from the start who's behind the murder attempt on Laz - but the dynamics between Laz and Red, as well as the banter between all the other characters, made it worth my while.

And yes, the models were depicted as shallow and overly dramatic as I thought they would, with a lot of shrieking and foot stomping, but as I was kind of expecting it, it didn't annoy me as much as I thought it would.

3.5 stars, rounded up, probably because I went in with low expectations and smiled a lot more than I thought I would.

While I really enjoyed this second installment in Charlie Cochet's series 'Four Kings Security' I have to admit, I liked the first book a bit better but that doesn't mean that this one wasn't worth listening to or that I won't listen to it again because...of course I will. I like Red and Laz and they were sweet together.

Of course the fact that the narrator is none other than the awesome Greg Boudreaux doesn't hurt things any. He's did a wonderful job with the first book and this one was every bit as good in regards to the narration.

Needless to say not only do I plan on re-listening this one but I'm definitely looking forward to books #3 and 4 and the spin-off series that I've heard is going to happen as well...what can I say I'm a fan of Charlie Cochet and her alpha men...whether it's the men of THIRDS or 'Four Kings Security' it's all good...so sign me up!

I was excited to get Laz and Red's story after meeting them in book 1, and for the most part I was enjoying their relationship in Be Still My Heart. But then a really weak miscommunication that causes the third act conflict and break up swooped in to ruin my enjoyment. It was lazy and the book would have been miles better without it.

This was just a bit too sweet and fluffy for me. Between Red's PTSD and the prior abusive relationship Laz had been in, I think I expected a different feel to the story. Although I enjoyed the characters individually and the two had sexual chemistry, they didn't really excite me as a couple.

The relationship part takes the main stage again in the book, with the mystery of who is after Laz being secondary. There were a couple of things that didn't make sense to me with the wrapping up of that part and I had already pegged the big bad earlier in the story (but that didn't really bother me).

While this one just didn't grab me, I am intrigued by the growing tensions between Lucky and Mason and will come back for their book.

Four Kings Security #2

Laz, who we first met in Love in Spades, returns as a main character in Be Still My Heart and finds himself needing Four Kings protection after someone tries to kill him during a photo shoot. Luckily for Laz, Red is there, once again, to make sure nothing bad happens to him.

The chemistry between Red and Laz in Love in Spades and becomes even more palpable in Be Still My Heart. They're perfect for one another, but they both have some baggage; Red's PTSD and Laz's trust issues definitely come into play.

The mystery of who wants Laz dead is definitely a side plot to the romance, which is front and center, with plenty of hot sex with some dirty talk thrown in.

There is some suspense in trying to figure out who the bad guy is, and the dual POV provides some much needed insight into both character's hopes and fears. When some miscommunication threatens to derail the new relationship, the guys work it out pretty quickly, and they work toward their own happy ending.

Lucky's story is up next and I'm definitely hoping that Mason turns out to be his forever guy.

Red and Laz were perfect for each other and barring Laz's superhumanly athletic ability of jumping to conclusions, this book made for a very pleasant read.

There were a couple of typos here and there but, I still thought the story was pretty good. I really wished Bryan had gotten some on-page retribution levelled against him because my o my, he was such an unpleasant, nasty, vindictive, evil, little man. Sheesh.

I must admit I saw the bad guy coming from a mile away so I guess the mystery/investigative portion of the next book has to be worked on and what a book that promises to be! The UST that existed between Lucky and Mason is so so so thick, their book is bound to be explosive!

Mood totally affects my reading experience. There is just no way around it. This book is the perfect example. After the first book I just wasn't sure if this series was going to be for me but no, I enjoyed this so much more than I did the first and I know it was because I was in the mood for it. I needed a fun and easy over the top read and I knew Charlie's new series would deliver.

She delivered. I had a lot of fun with this one and it has totally made me invested in the team and anxious for each and every one of their stories. I dig this formula and when I'm in the right frame of mind it is my favorite kind of read. You just have to roll with it and not take any of it too seriously.

So yeah, Red and cute as a button Laz. They just kept me smiling even when we got to the insert here misunderstanding you just knew was coming. I think I expected a little more pain from them but honestly I'm good and really didn't want to feel that so I like how it all played out.

So, I knew who the baddie was. I just knew it. From the gate. I don't know what clued me in or maybe I'm just that good, haha, but I guessed it early on. What I couldn't figure out was the why so I was never bored and found the wrap up still kept me on my toes.

Reviews are all over the place and I get it. I felt it for sure with the first one. But, like I said, this book would probably only ever work for me when I was in the right mood. Luckily I was.

3 stars. Oh dear 😔. Not sure what happened there, but I even skimmed the story in parts. I found it rather [dare I say it] dull and ordinary?? We had mis-communication [Laz was a complete moron several times during the story], lots of bitchiness and cat fights from models and ex boyfriends, and a whodunit mystery which if you worked it out was quite obvious. There was still some good banter between the Kings but they mostly acted like teenagers and not adults, and whereas I quite enjoyed it in Love in Spades, it got boring fairly quickly in this one, so I probably should have given up and read something else.

Definitely not Charlie's best work as far as I'm concerned, and everyone is entitled to an off day aren't they?? My problem is working out whether I'll continue with the series as a whole....perhaps it just isn't for me ☹.

Red & Laz ... so sweet ❤️ I’m enjoying the Kings, their camaraderie, loyalty diversity humor and this book highlights it all. Red, still suffering from his PTSD has been longing for Laz after radio silence for three months. Wondering what happened he continued on but harbored a little uncertainty. Thanks to the effervescent Ace, Red rubs into Laz and the story unfolds. It’s clear Laz didn’t want to be clingy so he kept away. Too many fears and worries, he figured he’d lost his chance. Well things happen for a reason... and this was their story 😊

I love these guys. I love all the characters so much. Everyone is so nicely portrayed and fleshed out. And I loved Laz and Red together. They were made for each other.

Only things that bothered me was the made up relationship conflict and the way the case ended, it was way too fast and not fleshed out at all. Wish we got a bit more on that considering it was a very important part of the book.

The second book for Four Kings Security tone is quite similar to the first one. The team camaraderie is fun and a little over the top. These guys are so mushy and Ace is funny as ever and driving Colton crazy. This is Red and Laz book, which we meet them previously when Red saved Laz when he was hurt by his sleazy ex-boyfriend.

Red and Laz had lost contact for months, and once they meet again, it sorta like a whirlwind. The entire 50% of the book took place in just two days whereby Laz's life was threatened and Red and the Kings swept in to save the day, meanwhile Red and Laz rekindled their romance. I thought from them not in contact for months, the progression in their relationship seems a tad fast. I also find Laz very demure and in a total damsel in distress mode. I don't mind reading about him needing saving, I just wish he showed a bit more spunk and sass, but he is vulnerable and insecure all the time. The rare time I see him being lively, is when he initiated sex.

Red and Laz's relationship is kinda sweet and cute with Red being all protective mode towards Laz. Red had to deal with his PTSD and Laz had to deal with his insecurities, but when they are together they manage to heal each other. That misunderstanding and conflict that happened near the end kind of baffled me. It was explained why Laz react that way, but I'm not in favour of this kind of drama. I still think that this is a strong series with a great cast of characters that I couldn't wait to read about. I actually like their over the top personality and I wish the next couple have a more interesting story arc.
