*I finished this book a few months ago*

it's interesting how the best story in this collection is the one that seems to be lost thematically...

This book is not for the faint of heart. From the very first story, ramdam mo na agad yung bigat—hindi lang basta gore or violence for shock value, pero yung tipong mapapaisip ka, “Bakit ganito? Bakit nangyayari to?” JL Chua really knows how to cut deep—literally and figuratively.

Each story feels like a punch in the gut. Hindi siya madaling basahin, to be honest. It's layered with so much social commentary—about power, silence, and how broken systems push people to do unimaginable things. And that's the real horror, I think.

What I loved is how the stories don't just show brutality—they show humanity in its rawest, darkest form. And the writing? Plus, the illustrations by Randy Valiente add another layer to the experience—sobrang haunting.

Hindi siya basta-basta basahin, and honestly, it's probably not for everyone. But if you want something bold, unapologetic, and thought-provoking—yung tipong mabigat pero may tama—this is a must-read.

This book is for people who aren't afraid to be disturbed and challenged. If you're looking for lighthearted or comforting stories, Kuwentong Butsero might not be your cup of tea. Many have stated that it is "not for the faint of heart." However, if you enjoy fiction that confronts difficult truths and forces you to reflect, this collection is both powerful and timely, a must-have.

Ganun nga sya, dark and foreboding: maraming kwento ang shocking at disturbing.

Nakakagulat, violent, entertaining Talaga. Nakakapangilabot at nakakabagag.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Highly recommended!

More thoughts (lifted from my Instagram caption)

“As long as there is violence in the world, there is violence in literature.” (A critic quoted in the book by JL Chua)

“Art imitates life.” (Originally attributed to Aristotle)

I have been itching to rave about Kuwentong Butsero since finishing it early last month for the Akdang Pinoy Readathon. Last August too, our book club @talkbookishtome had the privilege of hosting its author, JL Chua. I already knew this would be a book I would recommend nonstop, but that session cemented my support not only for JL, but also for illustrator Randy Valiente and their publisher, Gadgad Press.

In this reel, I talked at length about how engaging the book was in all its gritty and grimy urgency. Beyond its clever twists and fresh takes on realistic stories, the message is clear.

JL Chua writes for the oppressed— their stories that confront us with the illnesses of society we live with, witness, or hear about daily. Over the ten years he spent writing this collection, many were drawn from real observations and experiences. How much of it is truth is subject to what we believe. Yet, all of it feels familiar, in one way or another. So, what then do we do?

Both JL and Randy create and contribute meaningfully to the discourse on the human condition and the ways violence is perpetuated. Their work calls out abuse in all its forms. They are on a mission, and I count myself part of it.

I also have to highlight how JL used the Filipino language in a powerful and accessible way in these stories, and how Randy’s arresting illustrations reinforced the narratives. I am definitely in for more.

If you loved Ronaldo Vivo Jr.’s social commentary in Ang Bangin sa Ilalim ng Ating mga Tulay or the striking storytelling of Yvette Tan in Seek Ye Whre* and Insect Hag, you may want to see if this book is for you. ❤️

JL Chua did a good job making this disturbing and eye opening shorts. Nawa'y maraming pang makabasa nito at mahimok na maging kritikal sa kanilang paligid at magbasa. This got me out of my reading slump

Kuwentong Butsero by JL Chua is a collection of short stories about people crossing their respective Rubicon, showing new manifestations of moral decay, or how people can lose their humanity in the worst ways, given certain circumstances.

Initially, I wanted to binge-read this in one sitting but that wasn’t possible for me. It’s emotionally and mentally taxing. The weakest stories for me were the first two. Medyo straightforward yung concept nila, parang warm-up lang for the rest. The remaining stories? Way more creative and intense.

My tipping point was Katay, the third story. Full disclosure—bumaliktad talaga sikmura ko. After that, sobrang natakam na ako sa mga sumunod na kwento. Alam niyo kung anong amazing kay Chua? While I don’t condone the crimes or horrors committed by his characters, and I’m sure neither does he, he somehow managed to humanize them. Fully fleshed out. Si JL Chua ay isang writer na nabuhay na sa mundo, do you get what I’m saying?

I found myself rooting for them. Then I realized, ako din yun. I’m from the same mold. May Rubicon din ako. That’s the real horror. Not the violence, not the acts but the possibility that we could be any of them.

These stories force us to consider why some people end up doing what they do. And in doing so, it brings the conversation to the root cause—the system. That’s what makes this book brilliant.
Also, I just want to say, ang gaganda ng illustrations and artworks ni Sir Randy. It made the reading experience so much better. In fact, yung quality ng buong libro sobrang ganda. Hindi ka tinipid, worth it bilhin.

𝐁𝐎𝐎𝐊 𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐈𝐄𝐖: 𝐊𝐔𝐖𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐎𝐍𝐆 𝐁𝐔𝐓𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐎 𝐍𝐈 𝐉.𝐋. 𝐂𝐇𝐔𝐀 𝐆𝐔𝐇𝐈𝐓 𝐍𝐈 𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐘 𝐕𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐄

As the title suggests, it is a series of stories that captures the butchering of “meat” or butchering a concept. It gives the readers the impression that too much can kill. Suppose the events create massive triggers to the very core of the characters that result in terrible endings. The way it happened, it was unexpectedly a sinister way of death. The stories are hard to describe; rather, it has the various settings of social status, whereas it simply shows the ingenuity of the plot twist in each story.

Some would say a few pages of a novel are a hit or miss, and the Dinuguan gives a different set of emotions—fear, shock, confusion, and sadness. That indeed is what makes the whole of this book worth reading. As I mentioned, it captures the different facets of life. Each story depicts not only the gore and brutality of events but also the satire of some social issues that we face. It has the power to strike up officials, cybersecurity crimes, body dysphoria, and others.

Personally, Laman is my favorite story. It is the reality that is happening in the world. It gives us the idea to ponder how safe we are when dealing with the Internet. How sure are we that our gadgets are not spying on us, with less studying of the behavior of our brains? How safe are our identities over our clicks and views? And moreover, with the rise of AI, it is quite hard to determine what is real and what is not.

All the stories Sir JL made have their own unique way of giving the reader some kind of shock and fear of the unknown. With the goriness through the concept of meat, it might give you that little wonder of—kakain pa ba pa ng Karne?

I love this collection.

Like!? Wow.

Don't get me wrong! All of the stories sa collection e' mamamangha kang tunay.

The book cover really speaks for itself. The illustrations add a great touch, creating a formula that would captivate readers and encourage them to dive in. From the very first few pages, the book makes a strong statement, and you can truly feel the author’s passion for writing. The introduction, in particular, has a powerful voice—it’s honest, raw, and straightforward. This direct approach definitely earned extra points for me and played a big part in convincing me to keep reading.

Blending elements of speculative horror and social realism, Kuwentong Butsero explores how ordinary people find ways to speak out, rise up, or take revenge. Each tale is a form of protest, reclaiming agency through fear, folklore, and fiction. At its heart, Kuwentong Butsero is not just about monsters as it’s about systems that dehumanize, and about people who dare to confront them.

One of my three holy week reads that I devoured and thank God I had the time to do quick reviews for all of the ten short stories in this book.

My favorites are KARNE, LAMAN, and HIGOP but most of the pieces in this collections are quick reads that I enjoyed.

Bloody, brutal, dark, and revengeful, Kuwentong Butsero is another #AkdangPinoy that you should definitely add in your TBR.

kuwentong butsero pushes the boundaries of what books can talk about. tagged with the genre of transgressive fiction, this collection of short stories reminds us that literature can include and talk about violence because in one way, shape, or form, literature always reflects current society.

JL Chua makes it a point that as he publishes and writes new books - they always make readers say “wow! the philippine literature is alive and well." we're not stuck in the cycle of only publishing books of same themes, plots, and characterizations.

aside from the stories, i also just want to shed light on the illustrations by Randy Valiente ! they encapsulate the vibe of the book so much it makes you want to look for more of his own works!
