Rate this book
Riley wants nothing to do with her ex. Too bad he just became her new boss.

Lucas was Riley’s high school crush, then her boyfriend, then her whole world—until his old girlfriend waltzed back into town and destroyed everything.

Lucas swears he didn’t cheat, but the secrets he’s keeping say otherwise.

His brother just bought the inn where Riley works—the inn she planned on buying. Guess who’s the new manager? Yep. Lucas. The same guy who still looks annoyingly hot while ruining her life.

She’s stuck working with him every day—dodging old feelings and fighting new sparks. The chemistry between them is undeniable, but so is the pain he left behind.

He’s convinced they have unfinished business. She’s keeping her heart on lockdown.

Fool her once? Shame on him.

Fool her twice? Not gonna happen.

…Right?

Will old flames rekindle, or will workplace proximity ignite an all-out war? If you love slow-burn chemistry, laugh-out-loud banter, and exes who can’t stay out of each other’s way, this book is for you! Grab your copy now and dive into the chaos of love, secrets, and one very inconvenient new boss.

Janette Rallison has five children who keep her well supplied with plot ideas, sometimes even making cameo appearances in her novels. She likes to write romantic comedy because there is enough angst in real life, but theres a drastic shortage on both humor and romance.

Playing the Field was named Society of School Librarians International Best Book Award Honor Book, and both Alls Fair In Love, War, and High School and Love, Life, and the Pursuit of Free Throws were included on YALSAs Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults list. Yay for second chance romances!

Riley and Lucas had a fun relationship. They had dated for awhile, but things didn't work out. A few months later Riley is shocked when Lucas becomes her new boss. They still have a lot of issues to work out and Riley wants nothing to do with it. This was a fun story, it was well written, lighthearted and kept me turning the pages.

I was having a really rough day and this book got me through it. I even laughed out loud several times.

Riley and Lucas had an enemies to lovers, second chance romance going on, and I enjoyed every minute. So much awkwardness, chemistry, and comments from the peanut gallery. The trust exercises had me chuckling. They’re my favorite part. If you’re looking for humor, banter, good intentions going awry in hilarious ways, or mischievous marsupials, this is the book for you!

While this book is part of a series, it can be read independently.

The biggest waste of time, most stupid book ever. He may not have cheated but he is untrustworthy. He lies and keeps secrets from the main character. He gets close enough to his ex girlfriend to cause the main character to think he is cheating. Then he doesn't explain himself and wants to remain friends, fuck that. Also all the side characters sucked, especially Oliva.

I will always and forever be in a mood for any book by Janette Rallison - especially her romcoms! Her newest release, A Longtime (and now the Boss) Ex-Boyfriend was a delightful read.

Boss/employee is a tricky trope to execute well, and this book does so perfectly. Lucas ends up as manager of the inn Riley is assistant manager at due to his brother buying said inn (and his family’s desire to have him in a safer profession). While Riley and Lucas technically have ex status, it’s clear from the beginning that both still have feelings for each other and that neither really wanted the breakup (no spoilers here, so I won’t go into detail, but it definitely makes sense why they broke up and why they get back together). The resultant attempts at professional interaction at work are a brilliant mix of longing glances, awkwardness, and banter. As I’ve come to expect with Rallison’s books, there’s plenty of wit to the dialogue and plenty of relatable moments (both awkward and sweet). Riley’s awful date (not with Lucas) at the beginning of the book just spoke to my soul; while I’ve never had a date get arrested, I’ve definitely had plenty of terrible dates and the writing of it was perfect!

Highly recommend this book! No time like the present to get off social media and go download the book from Kindle!

Thank you to the author for the ARC. All opinions are my own!

I have loved J Ralliston books. She is funny and real. While this isn’t one of my favorite of her books but I still really enjoyed it. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of her books. This book has humor in it as well. Riley has issues trusting men due to her experiences growing up. Lucas doesn’t understand why Riley breaks things off from telling her a lie of where he was going to be. He didn’t cheat so why is Riley not giving him another chance? Now he has to work with her. He knows Riley is not going to make things easy for him.

This book made me smile and laugh so much. I couldn't help myself, it was so addicting and easily pulled me in. The characters are witty and have great banter between each other, or within their own thoughts. And the spark and chemistry made my heart happy.

I never want the stories that Janette Rallison writes to come to an end. And there was no exception to that with this book. I wanted more. I wanted Riley and Lucas's story to continue and show us what else is in store for them with their happily ever after. Good thing I can go back and reread this one whenever I want. It's totally worth it!

Second-chance stories are some of my favorites and I loved watching Riley realize she never got over Lucas. But she's still trying to avoid him due to circumstances. I couldn't wait for Lucas to show Riley that he's really a good guy and there were some pretty big misunderstandings. *Happy Sigh* You'll love their falling in love (again) story! It's so cute and delightful!

Content: Clean. Some kisses but nothing further.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

A longtime (and now the boss) Ex-boyfriend is part of a series of rom com novels by Janette Rallison. Riley’s voice is so fun. I loved her quick wit kind of like Gilmore girls vibes.
Luke is a cop turned Inn manager that’s handsome with a more serious, quiet side that complements Riley well.
-Trust issues
-Cheating ex
-Opposites attract
-Small town
-Workplace romance
-Second chance romance
-Enemies to more
-Crazy guests
-Hiding a dead body challenge
You will laugh and swoon! I would totally read this all over again.

So funny! The banter between Riley and Lucas is so sharp that I laughed out loud quite a lot. Both of them have their minds made up about what should have happened when they were a couple, and Riley will do anything to avoid talking about it. While trying to work together, they get the strangest guests the inn has ever had (including a wallaby), have to dodge meddling friends and family, and deal with their unresolved feelings. This is a clean romcom with characters you care about and all kinds of craziness.

*I received this book as an ARC. From the moment that I read the first words of this book, I was hooked- literally to the point of avoiding sleep and several work-related tasks. I have been a longtime fan of Janette Rallison, and this book is a new classic, so to speak. The first adjectives that come to mind are hilarious, adorable, and heartwarming- exactly what you want in a clean romantic comedy. When I say hilarious, I mean just that. It had moments that literally caused me to burst out laughing. There were maybe an equal amount of comedic relief-induced, “Oh no!” scenes. The romance is sweet and the dual perspective, a feature that Janette Rallison does so well in her books, added depth to the storyline. The book took place in a comfortable sounding setting in an idyllic cabin-like hotel. It made me want to visit a ski lodge or even just drink tea in my recliner. If you have spare time and you are looking for a fun book to read- get A Longtime (and now the boss) Ex-Boyfriend. I loved it, and you will too! :)

Riley and Lucas’s story has everything to keep the reader turning pages: old wounds, lingering sparks, and a good dose of humor. After their painful breakup, fate throws Riley and Lucas back together at the inn Riley has poured her heart into. Now Lucas is her boss, her dream of owning the place is crumbling, and the wounds he left behind feel new again.

Whether they want to admit it or not, these two still have a connection, and you can feel the tension between them. The forced proximity of having to work together each day was the perfect situation for both hilarious mishaps and deeply emotional confrontations. Janette Rallison's books always make me laugh out loud, and this one was no exception. With the inn booked full due to Riley trying to prove she was a capable assistant manager, I knew something, or some things, were going to happen...and they did.

Riley and Lucas are both flawed but wonderful characters, and they finally have a long overdue and much-needed talk about what broke them up. This story hits all the best notes of second-chance romance: longing, forgiveness, and a reminder that sometimes love deserves another chance—even if it comes wrapped in a lot of sass and a little sabotage. If you're a fan of second-chance romances with sizzling chemistry, witty banter, and a heroine who knows her worth, this book delivers all that and more.

So fun!

A Longtime (and now the boss) Ex-boyfriend was a fun story. Riley got burned in a big way. She caught her boyfriend, Lucas, in a lie--with his ex-girlfriend no less, to add fuel to the fire--and when he refused to tell her why, she dumbed his cheating carcass. Lucas admits he was an idiot for lying to his loving girlfriend, but he can't tell her what he was talking with his ex-girlfriend about because he'd promised her he wouldn't. However, doing so lost him the love of his life.
Six months later, Lucas's older brother buys the inn Riley works at and puts Lucas in as the new manager. Riley has despised him for the past six months, and now that they're working together, it's even worse. But Lucas still isn't ready to let their past go and wants another shot with Riley, and he'll do whatever it takes to get that.
I have to be honest, I almost quit the book when Lucas called his ex-girlfriend, Winter, asking if he could just tell Riley what they were talking about, so he could regain Riley's trust, and Winter flat-out refused and resorted to blackmail to keep his mouth shut. She even suggested that if Riley couldn't trust him without the truth, then that made Riley a bad person, and Lucas was better off without her. This is the first time that's ever happened to me with a Janette Rallison book--wanting to just quit reading and never finish. Who puts their ex's feelings in front of their current girlfriend?!! But I persevered anyway BECAUSE it was a Janette Rallison book, and she's never let me down before, and I'm glad I did.
The other employees at the inn were a lot of fun 'cause they were so interested I the Riley/Lucas drama, and my 2nd favorite part of the book was their employee trust-building meeting! I laughed out loud. Several times.
This was another great book by Janette Rallison, where the plot is interesting and keeps you turning pages, the romance is sweet with just the right amount of heated kisses, but there is no swearing and no bedroom scenes. Thanks for another great book, Janette! So fun!

A LONG TIME (AND NOW THE BOSS) EX- BOYFRIEND by JANETTE RALLISON ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A Long Time (And Now The Boss) Ex-Boyfriend is the third (3rd) book in Janette Rallison’s ‘Small Town, Big Sky Romance’ series.

Riley Barlow has worked as Assistant Manager in a quaint inn for many years and has hopes of one day buying it and making it her own. To that end she is happy to work long hours for little reward. Happy that is until she discovers that her ex boyfriend Lucas Clark’s brother has bought the inn from under her feet and has asked Lucas to manage it 😱

Lucas still regrets keeping the secret that broke Riley & him up. He thought their relationship was strong but clearly not. Lucas hopes that working in close proximity at the Inn might give him a chance to reconnect with his stubborn ex but he’s not prepared for her determination to make his life as hard as possible…..

Now firstly I have to say that I haven’t read any of the previous books in this series or indeed any of this author’s previous work. It was indicated that this book is a standalone & that the reader does not need to have read any of the previous books in the series to enjoy this book.

I received a copy of this book via BookSirens and am very happy to leave an honest, unbiased review.
§§§§§§§§§§

Well I have to say that I didn’t have to have read any previous books to enjoy this one. At just over 200 pages long this book would make a great light travelling or beach read. There were bits that I thought could have been beefed up a bit, that I think would have made the book more interesting but then it would have been a heavier read 🤷🏻‍♀️

I like the authors writing style and her characters. The storyline was interesting and the book was quite humorous. I would definitely read more of this authors work.

“Jody leaned in beside Riley, nudging her playfully. “You’re staring.”

“I am not,” Riley muttered, though she absolutely was. Lucas looked frustratingly at ease in his charcoal-gray button-down, sleeves rolled up just enough to remind her how familiar those forearms once were.

Jody raised an eyebrow. “You sure? Because it looks like you’re debating whether to glare at him or flirt with him.”

A Longtime (and now the boss) Ex-boyfriend by Janette Rallison is a super fun book featuring Riley and Lucas. Riley and Lucas were in love…or so Riley thought. Then she sees Lucas with his old girlfriend and everything is destroyed. But that is ok – Riley has other bigger brighter plans in store. She is going to buy the inn where she works and make it into a booming business. Problem is…someone else buys is instead of her and now her ex is her boss…

Things to love:
Dual POV
Small town
“Karma had a wicked sense of humor”
Secrets!!
Warning the real estate agent
Mistletoe
Team. Building. Scene.
“Fall for me”
The ending!!

I love all of the banter that comes from trying to get a second chance – especially when the characters know the ins and outs of each other and use it to their advantage (like Riley running the ad for “special” rates). Lucas and Riley are so loveable, and what made the book truly complete are the secondary characters. The new tenants at the inn (hello Wendy!), the snarky co-workers and for sure that Wallaby made me laugh out loud! I love this book from start to finish, and this book will be one that I re-read again…which is an automatic with me and this author!

This is a Book 3 in Small Town, Big Sky Romance. It can be read as a standalone, but does have interrelated characters from the other books in the series. I recommend you check all of them out!

🪵 A Longtime (and now the boss) Ex-boyfriend 🪵

Riley wants nothing to do with her ex—too bad he’s now her new boss. After Lucas broke her heart, he’s back in her orbit and managing the inn she works at—the one she hoped to buy herself. He claims he never cheated, but Riley isn’t convinced. Now forced to work side by side, sparks fly, tensions rise, and unresolved feelings refuse to stay buried.

Here are my highlights:

✨ Familiar faces return. If you’ve read the first two books in the series, you’ll enjoy seeing those characters again—there’s a nice sense of continuity and warmth.

💖 Riley may be stubborn, but she’s layered and real. You understand where she’s coming from, and it’s great to see how her friends support and care for her throughout the story.

💬 A satisfying second-chance romance. The emotional tension is well-paced, and thankfully, there are no over-the-top villain exes (a refreshing change!).

📚 Just the right length. It’s a short, easy read with a steady pace—enough communication and emotional closure to make the ending feel earned, not rushed.

My Thoughts?
I enjoyed this one just as much as the first two books. The pacing felt right, the chemistry was believable, and I appreciated how the conflict was handled with maturity rather than unnecessary drama. Second-chance romances always tug at my heart, and this one did it well, especially without leaning on exaggerated ex-drama tropes—a cozy, enjoyable read with just the right amount of tension and heart.

💕 The Swoon Scale 💕
💍 Swoon-Worthy Sparks ✨ (4/5)
💬 The Dialogue 🎭 (4/5)
🦋 Butterfly Effect 🥺 (3.8/5)
📖 Re-Readability 🔁 (4/5)

A Longtime (and now the boss) Ex-boyfriend by Janette Rallison (5 stars)

Janette Rallison writes rom-coms the way they’re supposed to be – – funny! Laugh out loud funny! Oh my word, there were a couple of times I was really glad I was reading alone because I burst out laughing and couldn’t help myself!

Riley has some serious trust issues because she thinks she found Lucas cheating on her. And she knows that ‘once a cheater, always a cheater.’

Lucas feels that Riley should have trusted him and known that he would never cheat on her.

Now, they find themselves as manager and assistant manager of a small hotel. Riley‘s sense of humor is frustrating to Lucas (but has the rest of us readers laughing uproariously), and her humor is used to deflect him from having a serious conversation with her about what happened. She avoids it continually.

Things start to turn around for them as memories surface from the time when they were boyfriend and girlfriend. Also, long held worries of Riley‘s are found to be unsubstantiated, and she realizes that she still loves Lucas.

The situations in this book are hilarious! And the banter between the characters is excellent! I couldn’t help but laugh!

In conclusion, this book does take on serious themes like alcoholism, and the long-term damage it can do to families and individuals. But it is also cute and funny with some excellent kissing scenes all while being squeaky clean!

Riley has a plan: work crazy hours to earn the money required to buy the B&B she works at when the owner retires, and avoid the boy who cheated on her and broke her heart. And she's doing well - until Lucas turns up again. Lucas' hope to win Riley back doesn't really count as a plan, and some days he's sure he's better off without the girl who refused to trust him. But when his brother buys the B&B where Riley works and makes Lucas the manager, things are bound to get awkward one way or another - particularly since he's unwittingly crushed her dream. The question is: is this a second chance or a disaster in the making?

This was all highly enjoyable, with a good mix of parts that are touching and parts (the team-building exercise?) that are straight up hilarious - not to mention the usual general snark, assorted happenings and 'girl talk'. To make it all the more real, I could see both sides of the story - if Riley can't trust Lucas to tell the truth, why should she believe him when he says he's not cheating if she's seen 'evidence'? On the other hand, yes, there needs to be trust in a relationship. Watching the sparks fly was good fun, watching them try to fight them was more fun, and watching them finally get to the point of trust and more was amazing. Looking forward to seeing what the author writes next...

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

Boss/employee romances can be tricky to pull off, and while this book had some great moments, it didn’t completely work for me. Lucas ends up managing the inn where Riley works as the assistant manager—thanks to his brother buying the place and his family wanting him in a safer career. The second-chance element added tension right away, and I enjoyed seeing their lingering feelings come into play. That said, some of their interactions felt a little repetitive, and I wish there had been more depth to their relationship beyond the push-and-pull dynamic.

Riley’s disastrous date at the start? Definitely a highlight! I’ve had my fair share of bad dates, so I loved how relatable (and chaotic) that scene was. The banter between Riley and Lucas was solid, but at times, the dialogue leaned more awkward than witty. I also felt like the pacing dragged in certain sections, making it harder to stay fully invested in their romance.

Second-chance love stories always get me in my feelings, and while I liked the overall premise, I wanted more from the emotional payoff. Lucas is a great love interest, but I didn’t always feel the chemistry between him and Riley as much as I wanted to. If you love second-chance romance with workplace tension and don’t mind a slower burn, this book could be worth a read!

I received this book from the author as an ARC, all opinions are my own.

‘A Longtime (and now the boss) Ex-boyfriend’ was entertaining. Its plot involved a wedding to attend, an ex who would be in the wedding party, trying to get a date, meeting up with the bad boy, dramatic irony, humor, a new inn owner, a new manager, a wallaby, an unfortunate power dynamic, switched glasses at the reception, more dramatic irony, more humor, team building exercises, burning a letter, and falling in love. Moreover, Lucas and Riley, the protagonists, were ideally suited for each other and oozed chemistry. Additionally, I liked the author’s writing style: wonderfully written characters engaged in hilarious scenes, an amazing storyline that was captivating, and vivid descriptions including humor, figurative language, imagery, and down-to-earth word choices that created a lively tone, such as, “The staff here felt like family—a quirky, dysfunctional family at times, but still a family,” and “ Her future spread out before her in dismal detail. Her friends would find love and settle down. Riley would spend her life at work, come home to an increasing number of stray animals, and then die alone.” Overall, I liked the fascinating narrative.
I received a copy for free and am voluntarily giving my honest review.

2.5
I initially rated this a two but I decided to make it 2.5 then round up, because even though there were things that I kinda hated and I felt so bad for Riley, I still enjoyed reading it.

It was so frustrating that not only did Carson steal her dream, he put Lucas as her boss when they kept saying Riley knows everything, Riley runs this place. And Olivia had to beg Carson to give Riley a raise! Then he and his family see her as the problem for breaking up with him because he didn't cheat, but there is no way for her to know that. Sorry I don't think it's good enough to say no I wasn't, trust me bro, and then be mad when she doesn't. And I have thoughts about being emotionally and physically intimate with a woman, especially an ex. I know he was just being a friend, but I think some lines were majorly crossed.

Then I felt so bad how the renovations were going to ruin her vision of the hotel. I know it all got resolved at the end, but not quite satisfactorily enough. And it was pretty icky that Lucas kissed her. I know he genuinely thought she knew he wasn't Jace, but she was drunk!

So despite all of those things, I still like the characters, love Rallison's writing style, and am wanting to pick up the other book of the series I haven't read! Haha it only seemed fair to rate it a little higher because of that.

This was a fun read from the start. Like always, Janette introduces her characters in a way that makes you feel you know them. The story is laced with humor and funny predicaments.

Riley and lucas have a long history but only a short romance before Lucas cheats on Riley. He didn't really cheat but he's not at liberty to give Riley the details and they go their separate ways until a few months later when Lucas' brother buys the inn where Riley works and eventually hopes to buy. Lucas becomes Riley's new boss. Being forced to work together is a bit awkward at first and Riley does her best to get under his skin. But all her ideas for causing trouble for lucas end up causing trouble for her.

It's easy to see that neither of them is completely over the other and being in close proximity creates reminders of the good that drew them together before. Just as things seem to be working out for them, a blast from the past interferes, as do several unstable guests who happen to be staying at the inn. Let the chaos - and romance - begin!

Hard to Get Past the Premise

Don’t get me wrong. I love second chance romance. I love Janette Rallison’s writing. I love this series. But it was hard to get past the premise of this one. It’s very sweet and kinda funny, but fails to deal with the main problem of the novel:
He ‘cheats’.
No, nothing physical happens with his ex aside from some comforting snuggles, but keeping secrets from your current serious girlfriend, lying to her so you can spend time with your ex, and being emotionally intimate with an ex when you’re dating someone else all cross serious lines for me. He does apologize, but only for not understanding why she was mad. She felt like a rebound and honestly, I agree. If Lucas thinks things are all hunky dory now that they have their happily ever after, I have news for him. There will be trust issues in the future and I hope they’re ready to deal with them when it comes along.

This book was abso-freaking-lutely amazing!!! I devoured this book when I got it and was sad when I reached the end. This is the first book I have read by Janette Rallison, and I am obsessed. I am going back to read the previous books in this series because I have never laughed, cried, or fist-pumped so much from a book. I loved the storyline; it was original, page-turning, and hilarious. I loved the mystery, the drama, the angst, and the mild spice. I thought the main characters in this book were complex, had a complicated history, but the chemistry was intense and undeniable. This book is a contemporary second-chance romance that had me all in my feels. This book is part of the Small Town, Big Sky series, but can be read as a standalone. Really a fun and exciting read IMO. I can't wait to go back and reread it.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Great story!

Luke and Riley face off in this charming small town tale. I first became acquainted with the Clarks in the first story, A Long-time Crush with Luke’s older sister Elsie. When Janette announced she was expanding the story into a series I whooped. (Yes, I actually whooped for joy.) Luke is hired by his brother Carson to run a small inn he purchases in Lark Springs. Riley already works for the inn and suddenly gets a new boss in her ex, Luke. They get to navigate an awkward situation where they both realize they never quite got over each other. There’s lots of laughter, fun, and heart warming moments that kept me figuratively turning the page. The story keeps up a great pace with Riley’s and Luke’s antics that kept me smiling. It all comes to a happy conclusion. Janette, if you read this…Pleeeeeeaaassssee write a book for Jace too!!!!

Loved It!

Lucas and Riley used to date but Lucas lied and betrayed her trust. She caught him not where he said he’d be and he was there with his ex-girlfriend hugging. She couldn’t forgive him because of her past. They get brought back together in a boss-employee relationship and he’s determined to win her back.

I really liked Riley as a character. I liked the rom-com aspects to this book. We see both perspectives as the point of view shifts each chapter. The catastrophes that keep happening are funny but feel realistic (well, maybe not the wallaby). I feel like maybe the author has first hand experience (which turned into a writer character in the book) going to an inn and asking where a body could be hidden, for research purposes, it hit too close to home as a writer myself and really made me actually laugh out loud. Great read!

A Longtime (and now the boss) Ex-boyfriend ~ Part of: Small Town, Big Sky Romance #3 by Janette Rallison

Blurb:
Riley wants nothing to do with her ex. Too bad he just became her new boss.

I found this book to have been written well, the characters are brought to life with the descriptive words Janette has written. The storyline follows Riley and Lucas have known and other since high school, and then they became a couple, until they broke up.
This second chance romance has banter, fun, laughter and chemistry that kept me engaged from the start. A great book which I recommend reading.

Reasons I enjoyed this book:
Easy-to-read, Happily Ever After, Page-turner, Realistic, and Wonderful characters

Riley thought Lucas was cheating on her, so she kicked him to the curb.  Months later, Riley is saving to buy the inn where she works, but Lucas' brother buys it before she can.  Adding insult to injury, Lucas becomes Riley's boss.

Lucas knows if he could explain what Riley saw all those months ago, she would understand that he didn't cheat.  But it's not his story to tell.

After getting sick at Lucas' brother's (and her best friend Olivia's) wedding, Riley starts to put the pieces together.

Riley is hilarious and Lucas is patiently waiting for the right moment to win Riley back.  I fell in love with this quirky couple!  Janette Rallison scores a 10 with this one!

Riley works as an assistant manager of the Riverside Inn. She loved the old-world charm and hoped to buy the inn from her boss when he retired. Instead, Riley learns Mr. Ross is selling it to Carson, the brother of her ex. Her ex, Lucas, will be the manager and her boss. Riley believes Lucas cheated on her and cannot trust him. It was fun to watch Riley and Lucas interact when they both still cared for each other. Since Lucas had been a police officer, there are plenty of incidents where he adds drama to the story. Jace is the twin of Lucas, and the two of them add a lot of interest as well. Great story, full of love and humor.
