Charlotte Morrison is a shy squire’s daughter who is better suited to stitchery than spells. But when she discovers that her beloved brother is the author behind a series of revolutionary pamphlets decrying their oppressive government, her life changes overnight.
With the people’s hero under arrest, Charlotte cannot depend on the legendary Jack O’ Lantern to save her brother—so she takes matters into her own hands by boarding the infamous night coach through the Nether Moor: a place haunted by aberrations and monsters.
But danger lurks within the carriage as well as without. Charlotte is following Major Pegg, the cruel official carrying the papers that will bring about her brother’s arrest.
Charlotte has until they reach the Crossroads to steal them.
Armed with nothing but a spell bomb and desperation, Charlotte cannot rely on legends. It is up to her to save her brother and be her own kind of hero.
The Secrets of the Nether Moor is a steampunk adventure set in an alternate Georgian England about the outlaws that haunt the forgotten places and the heroes that can be found in the most ordinary hearts.
I am no longer accepting friend requests, but do feel free to follow.

Charlotte is on board the night coach that rides through the Nether Moor, a place that’s haunted by monsters. She carries with her a spell bomb. Not for her protection, but for her brother. Charlotte is tailing the official who carries the arrest warrant for her revolutionary brother, and she will do anything to stop that warrant from reaching its destination.
This story mostly takes place in the night coach. This reminds me a bit of the Doctor Who story Midnight for all the right reasons. The limited setting manages to elevate the tension. It puts more focus on the characters, none of which can be trusted. And it makes the mysterious Nether Moor feel even scarier, because who knows what kind of horrors are lurking outside the safety of the coach?
It’s the characters who form the heart of this story. Charlotte is the protagonist and we immediately know that she’s risking a lot to save her brother, making it easy to root for her. This fantasy world also has its own version of Zorro: Jack O’ Lantern, who makes his presence known in this story.
It’s a rather short story, but definitely worth your time. Heroes aren’t born, they’re desperate people driven into a corner who fight to save the ones they love.
What a quirky, funny, exciting little read! I would absolutely read a whole collection of stories about Jack O'Lantern and Charlotte Morrison and their adventures on the magical moor.
