Unintended Cultivator #6

Unintended Cultivator: Volume 6

Rate this book
Never owe a fox a favor…With his body cultivation at least temporarily under control, Sen sets out for his long-awaited reunion with the divine turtle, Elder Bo. It is a fraught meeting where Sen learns hard lessons and unwelcome truths, and despite his advancement, his old obligations still threaten to pull him back.

Years before, the nine-tail fox Laughing River did Sen a “favor.” The fox is finally ready to collect on that debt. Of course, if you give a fox an inch, they’ll try to take a mile.

The trifling matter that Laughing River wants Sen to accomplish is retrieving an old relic from some ruins. What could be simpler for a powerful core cultivator?

Yet, the demon is in the details, and Laughing River left out a few. Like the horde of devilish beasts, the potent wards, the fact that the ruins are the size of a city.

Sen will have to draw upon all his power, threatening the newfound balance in his body cultivation, to fulfill his obligation, or else risk the eternal enmity of a nine-tailed fox.

A definite return to form. There were sections where the narrative was content to tread water, but others that had me on tenterhooks. The ending was emotional and heart-warming. I wish I could have kept reading.

It was a Dull and had to much filler the first 4 books were good, now he is stretching the series out to make more money with the books being dull and boring. He talks a lot with no real substance. I will not be reading book 7

Dissapointing

What a waste of a book. Enough said. Next to no development in arcing plot or characters. Don’t waste your time.

I was bored and uninterested throughout the whole book. The author has clearly run out of content. I will not be following this series any longer.

Overpowered and Underwhelming

Felt like a filler. If you pulled this volume out, the overall story wouldn’t really change. The pacing meanders, with most events feeling like side quests rather than core plot progression. The main character is already so overpowered that it feels like the author isn’t sure what to do next, so the plot drifts without much real tension. By the end, I was left unsure what the closing scenes are meant to set up. The vibe almost hints at a massive time jump or skip coming in the next book, which could be interesting, but here it just left me detached from this instalment.

Glad Sen has got a personality now.

Hated all the secondary characters - the foxes were a pain.

I do recommend it

I like Kindle unlimited because it allows me to check out new Authors and stories that I might otherwise pass up on if I had to pay full price. This is the first story that I've come across from this author and I have enjoyed it immensely. If I really like a story I'll double back and buy the audiobooks. The narrator by the way does a phenomenal job with his performance. I finished the first three books. Couldn't wait for book 4. It came out and I absolutely loved the first 80% and hated the last 20% in the book. I did not get book four or five as audio. But I still like the story well enough to continue on with the series. I was feeling pretty good about a restoration of faith in the author. Not that he's a bad writer, but that the story he's telling align with my personal preferences in entertainment. When I went to pick up this book only four people had raided the story with one leaving a pretty bad review on the book. It was a shame because I had intended to pick up the audiobook. The person described the story as a Non-Stop nagging Fest by the female characters towards the male main character. It sounded very annoying and made me gun shy about buying the audiobook. In an effort to not spoil anything I'll keep it kind of vague. In short we have our main character and for supporting characters with two of them being female. These five characters account for the vast majority of this book. Doing some napkin math right off the bat you really only have 2/5 of the book where that reviewer's accounting could be accurate. The two female characters seem to vacillate between shock at what the main characters doing and general annoyance at the main character. Honestly it didn't bother me and it wasn't so heavy-handed that I think it would bother the majority of the audience. It did fit the story and it didn't really come off as nagging. To each their own and as a general rule I don't talk about another person's review, but in this case it did affect my choice when it came to making a purchase.

I think I am done with this series. It isn't terrible, it just is missing something. First, I think the MC is kind of an a**hole. Okay not really, but he isn't really likeable. My biggest question for him is "what do you want?" He spends the majority of the book complaining about what he has to do. The nine tail fox shows up in this one and wants him to return the favor he is owed. He has to go and see the turtle spirit as promised. He complains nonstop. He doesn't want to do any of that. Okay, I understand that but what actually do you want to do? What is your goal in life? So far all I read about is all the things he doesn't want to do. He doesn't want to deal with cultivators. He doesn't something incredible in front of mortals but doesn't want them to make a big deal out of it. He does something monumental in front of other cultivators and looks down on them for now being able to do the same (okay, that isn't exactly the truth but he really doesn't understand how much more he can do than others and doesn't seem to want to think about it. He makes a perfect once in a lifetime elixir. No big deal, I did way harder stuff than this before.

The action is pretty good but again, my biggest gripe is the MCs lack of joy. He is good at a lot of things but what is he passionate about? What does he want out of life. He just seems to be going through the motions. The heavens are even pushing him to get stronger and likely ascend but he doesn't want to do that either. Overall, I am disappointed. The first book started out so well but the last couple made me question why I would continue to read this.

This series keeps getting ever more powerful as our wandering cultivator gains in power. Sen also known as Judgement's Gale is on his way to visit the old turtle, a visit which was long overdue and one he was dreading. He learns a few lessons from the turtle and moves on, however he is stopped by a nine tailed fox, known as Laughing River, who had come to collect a debt for a favor he once did for Sen. Now everyone knows how cunning and wily foxes are, and Laughing Fox was very wily. He asked Sen to fetch an old relic for him from some ruins he was forbidden from entering. Sen thought this was an easy peasy job, however he forgot he was dealing with a fox. Laughing River did not tell him about the size of the ruins he would have to search through, these turned out to be the size of a big city, nor about how heavily warded these would be, neither about the devilish horde of deadly beast which surrounded the ruined city. Sen finds himself fighting for his life, and upon encountering the demon whom he was forced to battle almost dying. This book is amazing, Eric Dontigney is giving us a hero, who seeks to bring about balance in the world by not only passing judgement on the wicked, but also showing care towards those in need. I love Sen and cannot get enough of reading about his exploits and travels, but I long to see him re-united with his girlfriend and his mentor Fu Ruolan, even though she is so hard on him, and to see how Sen will cope with his new obligation! I am sure the next book will be amazing.

Title: Another Sen-sational Read
Content Ratings: Language – R; Violence – PG13; Other – R

If you've read any of my other reviews, you know I'm into progression - whether it be leveling, cultivation, relationships, storylines, etc. I tend to wander mainly in LitRPG, because it tends to consistently have lots of progression, and the genre allows for fun situations that would be hard to pull off in other genres. In most books, it seems like it's obvious when the focus is shifting from one thing to another. Sometimes, it's even the whole series - the MC reaches the top of their progression, and then the story switches completely away from character progression.

So why bring this all up? Because this series has consistently blended all of these things together so well that the pacing is never off. There are no slow moments - whether it's traveling, dialog, combat, introspection, cultivating, or whatever. It's all good. 6 books in, and I feel the same as I did in book 1. It's engaging from the first word and holds my attention steadily through the whole book. Sorry for the pun in the title, but sensational is the right word, and it's not my fault if the MC is named Sen. As usual, I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment.

Another filler

This volume was mid at best. Honestly I would have rated it 2 stars at best, but the last like 8% of the book made it tolerable.

Literally just another book of Sen dealing with his own mental bs while also not really caring about it. Thought we already got through the heart demon stuff?

The entire interaction with the foxes was awful and horribly forced. They were like the attempt at comic relief who thinks slapping someone in the face with a rubber chicken over and over is hilarious. Funny the first time, but after 3 you’re over it and after 1000 you’re actively hoping for their demise.

I feel like the author has hit an impasse with his story, he has a general idea of what he wants but can’t seem to get there. Almost like the dog from Up he keeps going squirrel, and letting everything distract him from the story. The only constant is Sen keeps getting stronger with absolutely no reasoning or explanation. Like in this one he didn’t even try to hide it, a massive flood of divine power just gets shoved into Sen to push him forward from nowhere! The explanation…. A shrug of the shoulders.

Mostly filler.

A bigger issue is that the whole book has the MC complaining about the actions he's refusing to take, like he has no self-control or agency.

What does he do? He accepts a task for a favour he's owed that is way out of proportion to the favour done. He's even given the option to leave, but tries to do the "Honourable" thing even though he says he shouldn't, the Fox says he knows he can leave.

Then he gets 2 more sexy female followers that he always complains about, but never leaves or has them leave like he swears. Bear in mind that he'll keep reminding you how annoyed and put upon he is while he does nothing about any of it.

It's a bad contrast to his character that he's suddenly a big doormat.

Will see if the next book reviewer says if it's more filler. There are too many other books to read and not waste time on a weakening serie.

There were some good parts to this book but I feel this book is diverging from what I want it to be.

I don't think this author knows what to do with Falling Leaf, as she was sidelined yet again. We are instead introduced to yet another beautiful female cultivator that exists just to serve as a damsel in distress.

We don't get any heart to heart talks in this as Sen increasingly doesn't connect with his chosen family. Sen's trip through the temple made him only come to the same realizations that he's made before. He didn't even get any unique boons from his visit with the monk.

Despite all that, it's the ending that does this in for me. Why in the world would I want to read about Sen trying to raise a child?

This might be the weakest entry in this series so far, but that also might just be a matter of personal taste. A big chunk of this story is given over to what feels like a side quest that distracts from the story of Sen's progression through his cultivation journey. It's not so bad as something like a self-contained dungeon arc in other stories, but it was definitely a storyline that overstayed its welcome for this reader.

That being said, I am happy to chalk this misstep up to personal taste. I know that there are people who are perfectly happy to step off the main story path for some prolonged side adventures like this, and therefore, if that sounds like you, you might get more out of this story than I did.

An interesting tale with a sweet ending

Is it just me or in this book has Sen's personality completely changed? I think he adapted his presentation of himself to match the foxes a bit, but I don't know, he just feels different.

Anyway, this book gets old fast since most of the company Sen has is ridiculous. Between the two foxes only hinting at things in a conversation to outright trying to seduce him, just, no. Thank goodness the spider eventually comes along for quiet peace of mind.

The ending is by far the best part of the book. It feels more like the Sen we are used to and leaves a sweet ending!!

Have fun!

Unintended Cultivator, Volume 6 of the Unintended Cultivator series, is an ebook I borrowed through Kindle Unlimited (KU). Laughing River was one of my favorite characters, it was fun to see him featured in this installment. The story was good, but the labyrinth seemed to drag out part of the story...don't worry, it bounces back to its expected action sequences and twisty turns. You'd think this storyline would lose momentum after six books, but this writer has managed to entertain me enough I am looking forward to book seven (or more).

The series got better

He drew upon the cumulative effects of all the books to deliver an absolutely hilarious and entertaining story. All the books are good; but this one is my favorite one. Verywell written and a masterful weaving of story lines, not once did it contradict, conflict, or confuse itself. He did a great job of keeping the threads of the story in line as he weaved his web or story as it is told.

I’m beginning to loose some of my interest in this series. I have never really liked Sen’s tedious introspection, but on top of this I didn’t enjoy the whole ‘Fox’ thing, particularly the endless meaningless banter, which was a pity, as they constituted most of the book.
Also the author is a firm believer in ‘more is better’, so fights tend to become massive slaughter fests.
If possible I would have given 2.5 stars.

A mixof exotic events, drama and tedium

The meeting with the turtle was a let down for me and the prude cultivator woman wasa bit annoying. While i liked the witty banters later on the story progressed way too slow for my taste. The end was cute.

Criticism and comments

Not again they/them for single persons! It is such a wilfull travesty that I have to do downgrade my rating again.

Well balanced story

This book brings the series back to its strengths. It spends more time on Sen's character. Fights and action scenes are informed by each character's personality and motivations. The plot is interesting and ties the world and characters together in interesting ways.

Overall, it's a solid and well-written story.

-5 stars: MC just super OP, strife is fake/absent, and author kind of breaks progression system, by making the heavens randomly boost his cultivation unearned. Alchemy training is horrible, and basically ends with him ‘feeling’ it with 0 foundational training and understanding.

+1 star for good dialogue

-0.2 star for everyone lusting for mc entire book… again.

This read was pretty epic. Helping Nine Tails was a treat but meeting his grandaughter meant even more. Meeting a very loyal Glimmer was a bonus!

Whilst I am loving the series as a whole, I feel the author is kinda on a long winded spiel... there's a lot of words in between the actions moving forward. I am keen to see something different.

A more light hearted addition to the series

This book was a nice break. It was a good easy read that reiterated some plot points but wasn't as serious as previous books. Love the last chapter addition:).

Definitely the best book in this series so far! Loved the character development and the philosophical talks. Excellent and unique arc that went in a completely different direction. Eric Dontigney continues to amaze me with his spellbound writing. Read the entire book in one go :).

Good Book but

This book was great but it felt like a side quest in the main story arc. Good story but a whole bunch of side characters just to add two new characters to the main story line.

A fun and convoluted adventure!

It is a fun and convoluted adventure that adds depth and more breadth to an already great series. The new characters are interesting and to the story well.

I'm looking forward to the next book!

I liked reading this series. It's easy to read and amusingly funny for all that it's super violent. It's not repetitive. I might read it again. I look forward to the next book.
