When Raelyn, a Felnar elf, was born with the Gift, her destiny was set to one day become a Dragon Champion. But after her brother's untimely death and her affinity for air magic surfaces on her three-hundredth renewal, she decides to give up the life of a Spiritchild, leave the Death Kingdom of Nashrammus, and live a normal unassuming life in the kingdom of Tempeste. Now a denizen of the Sylphyr--the air elves--she meets Syn, a handsome elf who takes her in, and they strike up an uncanny friendship.
After many cycles, their relationship fractures when Raelyn makes a poor emotional decision to leave Tempeste to finally pursue her destiny as a Champion. But all is not well with her attempts to use her Dracon Charmer ability, having been rejected by no less than four dragons in the five cycles after she left Syn behind her.
Hope begins to dwindle when she starts having odd dreams and seeing stalking shadows only to find out it is Draythul, the Sky Guardian of Dark, who was drawn to her by an echo--a soul connection to a past Champion. An attempt at the ancient elvish spell Soul Resonance goes awry, but Raelyn eventually is successfully able to begin the process of binding the dark dragon's soul with hers. When a missive from the High Council housed in the Felnar city of Eh'mah'lune arrives by spellpunk aeroship, Raelyn and Draythul set out to be recognized by the Allied Kingdoms governing body.
Shortly after arriving in the Felnar city, Raelyn is officially recognized in an elaborate ceremony under the light of Etheia--the moon, nicknamed the Broken Maiden. Sparks fly between Raelyn and some very handsome council members, but the new Champion of Dark is soon tasked with solving the Queen of the Dreynin's murder, along with a slew of poisonings as well as an attempted kidnapping within the walls of Nightreach--the Dark Kingdom.
The pair's journey to Nightreach is an arduous one, filled with new friends and old faces. Raelyn’s life gets more complicated when a mission she must keep hidden from the council and the royals falls into her lap—all while attempting to solve mystery after mystery.
Arriving at Shardore Castle in the middle of Royal City, the uppermost tier of Nightreach, takes Raelyn on an adventure throughout the entire kingdom. She finds herself spending time in Lower City, the bottom tier, as well as Upper City where the higher class and nobles reside, trying to unravel a complex knot of puzzling information in an attempt to follow through with a promise, along with completing the task she was given by the High Council in Eh'mah'lune. She must do this to prevent more lives from being lost--including her own.
When morally grey areas begin to appear within the monarchy things start to get messy, and all Raelyn and her dragon can do is trust they will make the right decisions--or will those decisions turn dark?
