Free Falling

Rate this book
Three months ago, four words changed my life forever.

My life was perfect. Late nights at the office, a penthouse on the Upper East Side, a new woman in my bed every night.

Then I got a knock at the door, and everything changed.

And all it took was four words: you have a daughter.

In a whirlwind, we moved back to my hometown. I needed to be surrounded by family, by people who could help me cope with the fact I was now a single father to a grief-stricken twelve-year-old.

All I wanted was help. I never expected to fall in love with my sister's best friend.

Our relationship was built in secret, in late-night texts and in lingering glances. But when my past catches up to me in the form of a disgruntled colleague, I almost lose everything and everyone I've come to love.

Spice - 🌶🌶🌶

Trope - age gap, best-friend's brother, billionaire romance, friends to lovers, curvy FMC, secret baby, single dad, found family, grief, he falls first, reformed playboy, secret relationship, small town, with benefits, steamy, kinky, HEA

I dragged myself to finish this one. After reading book 1, I had high expectations, especially because it featured one of my favourite tropes, but something just didn't sit right in my mind - maybe it was my mood or perhaps the writing; I'm not sure. I genuinely feel bad giving this book a 2-star rating, especially after seeing that book 1 was a 5-star for me, but unfortunately, this was not a book I enjoyed.

Theo is a playboy who only cares about himself, that is, until his world turns upside down and he discovers he has a 12-year-old daughter. Soon enough, he moves back to his hometown to raise the child. Brynne is Trinity's (Theo's sister) friend, and has always liked Theo but never expressed it due to his Playboy persona. When he moves back, boundaries start to blur, and they begin a secret relationship.

Theo's bragging about his money and how he didn't need to remember the women he'd slept with really rubbed me the wrong way - I despised that Playboy attitude - I had to skim through that chapter, but when he , that just added fuel to the fire. He was so obnoxious, I simply couldn’t stand that whole attitude he carried, where he thought he could do anything and anyone would bow to him. I get that he was protective of Scout, but sometimes I wished he had taken a different approach. He later realises how selfish he was and shows some character development, but unfortunately, it came very late and was more subtle than I expected; it didn't help much in changing my opinion.

Brynne, I didn't find much personality in her. I wish her character had more depth because I would have loved to learn more about her life and struggles.

The flirting between them felt so forced, and I was not at all interested in their sexual desires - it looked and sounded like lust and nothing else. The chemistry between the couple was lacking compared to the previous pair. Were they attracted to each other? Yes. Did they give soulmate vibes with great chemistry? No. I also didn't like how they hid things for so long, . The third-act breakup was something I knew was coming, yet it still disappointed me.

Things I liked -
1. Dean and Trinity's chemistry intrigued me the most, not just because they were enemies but because I knew when they got together, the world would erupt and then heal at the same time. Can't wait for their book <3
2. The grief and emotional parts were once again well expressed.
3. Scout was hurting, and her point of view provided some of the most painful chapters I’ve read in a while; she didn't deserve the pain.
4. Theo and Scout's relationship grew, and they became father and daughter.
5. The family dynamics were great.

It could have been better.
Overall, 2.5/5

Huge thank you, Claire Brooks, for providing me with an ARC of Free Falling! This was easily 4.5-4.75 stars for me and I absolutely adored this!

This book was well paced and had me hooked from the first page. Scout is the first character you meet and I was so confused at first because I went into this completely blind. But confusion did not last long though and I was completely invested immediately. The story unfolded quickly and it tugs on your heartstrings from the first chapter. Claire did a great job at roping me in and keeping me full on invested from the start.

I really loved Theo’s character. The reformed playboy that just wants to do right by his kid when he is in over his head? Say less, I’m sold. Normally I hate the ritzy rich white boy but he stole my heart immediately. I loved watching his relationship with Scout grow. Him getting Scout a bunny? I melted. Him admitting that Scout’s the best thing in his life but that he would give her up if it meant she could have her mom back? He’s perfect and I will take no notes. Her finally calling him dad? SOBBED. I don’t know what else to say besides I think he was perfect and showed the perfect growth.

Brynne was such a feisty FMC and I loved her. Her relationship with Trinity was so fun.. her relationships with Trinity’s family was also really sweet. Her relationship with her brother was super interesting and I really hope to see more of it unfold in the future books.

Theo and Brynne were so fun together. Their tension and banter were explosive. Them trying to keep things on the app and sneaking around just made the tension ramp up so quick. Then add Theo’s protectiveness and possessiveness of Brynne… unmatched. Claire did a great job writing their relationship. You saw how much they leaned on each other and supported each other. I really loved them together!

The poems and little writings that we got to read from Scout were heartbreaking… beautiful… well written. They really added an extra layer to the book that I was not expecting. I loved these parts.

This part is specifically for Claire… as a girl who has lost a parent young and now is supporting her husband after losing his first parent… this book hit home in a way I didn’t know I needed. This book felt like it helped heal me. Your words written about death from Theo’s perspective were beautiful and really resonated with me. Thank you. I needed that. You touched on some really difficult topics but you did it beautifully.

My only hang up was that some of the text bubbles were missing or on the wrong side of the page… which was more so me being OCD and granted this is an ARC! The only other thing I think I would mention is the fact that in the beginning of the book it felt like there was a lot of moving parts but by the end it all made sense and fit well together. I don’t think I would really call either a complaint though, right?

Here are my unhinged reading notes! Please proceed at your own risk as there may be minor spoilers. You have been warned!!

Omg Scout’s poem was a punch to the gut. That’s all.
Page 103. I’m a sick puppy.
I want to be a part of their book club but I think I’m skipping the tentacle smut. I try not to yum yuck but I think that’s my proverbial line?
Larry??😭😭
Theo, you’re a good dad… and a DILF.
Okay is it me or are Theo’s own text bubbles on the wrong side? It’s not just me. They are on the wrong side. And I know it.
I think I would fall for Theo for just breathing.
Okay now some of the messages don’t have text bubbles? I’m not crazy.
Someone needs to restrain Trin when it comes to Dean.
Theo is hot. I will not take any notes, comments or concerns regarding this matter
They just sexted and I think I blacked out. That was the equivalent of a double shot of patron.
I know we shouldn’t talk ill of the dead but Sarah is a bitch for not telling Theo about Scout.
Scout getting her period for the first time while she is ill is waaaaaay too relevant.
I am so addicted to this.
I have been trying to keep track of closed door modifications… but I am a one trick pony while reading this and my trick is to read only.
I would contemplate calling out of work tomorrow to finish this. I am not going to do it. But I would contemplate it.
Jesus Christmas trees, I didn’t think I would be crying at 6:30 AM to this.
Omg I’m just sobbing. I did not expect this to go THAT deep.
Claire, you touched death in this book so unbelievably well and I NEEDED that. I really needed that.
Listen, I try to not yum yuck but trinity’s choice in books might be my proverbial lines.
“I’m trying to start a cult.” ME TOO TRIN. 😂💀😂💀
“It’s a gargoyle why choose.” Shut up, no 😂💀😂💀
You know what? Page 313 just has me on the FLOOR cackling.
This is the craziest trivia night I have ever read.
I love how the raccoons are just MULTIPLYING but on a side note, I hope Sean acquires glass in the windpipe.

This book was like a warm hug and a free fall straight into my feels!  It was such a heartfelt, beautifully written story that really tugged at my emotions in the best way. The characters felt so real... flawed, lovable, and easy to connect with. You could feel their growth with every chapter.Claire Brooks does an amazing job of balancing emotional depth with sweet, tender moments that make you want to pause and soak them in. It’s a slow, soft unraveling of hearts, healing, and hope. Nothing felt rushed, and everything unfolded just when it needed to.If you love stories that explore connection, second chances (with life, love, or self), and that leave your heart a little fuller than before, you’ll adore this one.

Cedar Ridge #2

I am so proud to be part of Claire’s arc team. When I read Play Pretend back in March I was *shook* by how friggin good it was. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on book 2 when she announced it. I love that we are back with our same crew of characters, but this book focuses on a different pair. This book is about wealthy, Theo and how his world gets turned upside down when he receives visitors at his door announcing he has a daughter he did not know about. Moving back to Cedar Ridge, to be close to family, was the only thing he could think of doing when faced with the task of raising a twelve year old on his own. Then enters Brynne, his sister’s best friend that he has had a secret thing for forever. But she has always been off limits, and slightly out of reach. When she pops up on a dating app.. will he finally make a move? Something about the way Claire writes is just soooo friggin good. I was invested into the story, and I devoured it. Also spice was spicing. Loved everything about it, and I can’t wait for more from her.

Theo the man that you are! This is the second in the Cedar Ridge series and while I haven’t read the first one (yet…), it works great as a standalone! Claire Brooks did a phenomenal job at not over introducing characters so this really flowed well as a second book. I loved watching Theo and Scout figure each other out and it felt pretty realistic. The third act breakup was slightly annoying, but to be fair most third act breakups are, but I liked how Theo and Brynne both acknowledged their roles in it so it didn’t just feel brushed under the rug. The teasers and mystery behind some of the characters has me on the edge of my seat for the next books! Brb gotta go read Play Pretend 🏃🏼‍♀️‍➡️

Free Falling is a captivating and emotionally deep small-town romance that touches on real life topics such as overcoming loss and managing grief. With the perfect blend of steamy passion, heartwarming emotion, and a touch of mystery to keep things interesting, this book delivers a story that’s hard to put down.

Theo is a wealthy NYC playboy whose life is turned upside down when he discovers he's the father to a 12-year-old girl named Scout. Returning to his hometown of Cedar Ridge, Theo is determined to embrace this new role of fatherhood. Brynne is a compassionate schoolteacher and has always harbored a secret affection for Theo, her best friend’s older brother, but the list of reasons to never go for it is long and complicated. That is, until a chance encounter on a dating app late one night changes their trajectory forever. Their online flirtation quickly intensifies into a profound real-world connection. As their feelings deepen, is it worth the risks to take this relationship IRL?

I adored witnessing Scout lower her walls and learn to trust again with the help of Brynne, Trinity and Demi. They really take her under their wings and the bond they develop adds another layer to this already emotionally deep story. Claire Brooks is great about developing not only her main characters but also intertwining strong side characters into the story as well. I look forward to future books from this author and hopefully getting a deeper look into their stories!

What to expect from Free Falling:
• Fiercely protective MMC
• Reformed playboy
• Single dad x teacher
• Best friend’s older brother
• FWB to lovers
• Found family
• Overcoming grief / loss of a parent

Thank you so much to Claire and her team for the ARC of this book! Free falling follows big city hotshot Theo on his journey finding out that he has a 12-year old daughter, Scout, and falling in love with his sisters (younger) best friend Brynne. Brynne is a teacher who relates to scout when nobody can get through.. She also happens to be Scouts teacher. All of the characters of the Cedar Ridge series are so real and lovable and human. I cannot wait for Trin’s book next!

I have been anticipating this book since I finished the first one and jumped at the opportunity to read it early. We got a great glimpse of Theo and Brynne in Play Pretend , enough to keep us anxious to see their relationship play out. Theo (a playboy bachelor living in NYC) along with his sisters best friend Brynne (immediately sold with that trope) have never really beat around the bush with their flirtations. She is so close that she’s in the family group chat, but they’ve never seen themselves as siblings. They do take their relationship with Trinity very seriously though, and don’t want to cross any lines by jeopardizing that, however, the tension between these two can be cut with a knife. When Theo finds out he has a daughter after 12 years, he immediately jumped into action to move back home with his family for the support that he needs to take care of her. His multiple siblings and mom jump to action to give Scout the family she needs after her mom tragically passes away. As expected, a 12 year old moving to the small town with a bunch of strangers and grieving her mom goes pretty terrible. But the family is determined to show her how loved she is and be there for her in any way possible. Theo fills the role so well considering he’s only ever really had to worry about himself, and with Brynne as her teacher (giving total Miss Honey vibes from Matilda), Scout feels welcomed so quickly.

As expected, there is some suspense and just some trauma overall to overcome, and it was written so well and realistic for relatability. Also, adding Scouts perspective in addition to Theo and Brynne had the reader directly engaged with her thought process and got to really see her heal. This was so well done and absolutely loved up to my expectations after an incredible book 1 debut. I am so excited to follow along with the next book and hear Trinity’s story, and even more so finally get to meet the long lost brother Adam that we have only heard about but not gotten a chance to encounter. I am so invested in this series and can not say it enough how much of a must read it is. This releases Friday 6/20 and will be available on KU and paperback, with audio eventually to follow.

This is the second book in the Cedar Ridge series and I loved it even more than the first. Such a deep, emotional, heartfelt read.

Theo is a successful architect and thinks he has it all- wealth, women, a career. The rug was pulled out from under him when he found out he was the father of a 12 year old daughter from a one night stand.

Brynne, a teacher, is Theo’s sister’s best friend. She had always had feelings for Theo however she never felt she was good enough for a relationship.

Then we have Scout who is going through all of the emotions of losing her mother and now being with her father who she didn’t know up until this point.

I am a fan of the writing by Claire Brooks. How she provides the depth of the characters you need to connect with them. Writes in a way that you get so immersed you are able to feel the emotions and feel as you are there watching it all unfold. This one had me laughing as well as crying. The sparks and chemistry between Theo and Brynn was undeniable and when it finally happened the spice was chefs kiss!

This was such an amazing heartfelt, small town romance with a slow burn and I was all for it. One that will tug at your heart. I absolutely can’t wait for the next one!

*4.5/5 - bumped up since Goodreads doesn’t have half stars, didn’t want to drop down on this one. Was given an ARC for an honest review.

This book was incredible. Tell me how Claire Brooks took all of my least favorite tropes and bundled them together to make one great story?! One that had me rethinking the fact that I normally avoid the “single dad” and “age gap” books. Seems maybe I’ve been missing out. This story took me through so many different emotions and I loved every single second of it!

Theo and Brynne’s story was beautiful and complicated and so, so steamy! Seriously, the mouth on this man was something else. It was full of chemistry and banter but also more serious moments too. The emotional growth Theo goes through after becoming a father was so endearing. And my heart hurt for both him and Scout so many times throughout the book. The way Theo showed up for her time and time again was amazing. Then when you add the blazing chemistry between Theo and Brynne and the fun interactions with the supporting cast, this book was a recipe for success!

There wasn’t anything I didn’t love about Free Falling. Claire Brooks has a way of drawing you into her stories that not only connects you with her characters, but also makes you feel at home.

4.5⭐

thank you Claire for the ARC!

After reading Play Pretend back in March I as beyond excited to ARC Free Falling!

Theo & Brynne were such an exciting pair between the banter & the chemistry.

Theo was thrown into the life of being a single parent of a little girl he didn't know even existed until tragedy struck. The way he had to learn to raise a preteen while also trying to let her sort through her grief was so heartwarming. Scout really opened up Theo's heart and showed him that he wanted so much more than he originally thought in life.

Brynne is such a spitfire of a FMC. She is sassy & isn't afraid to give Theo shit. I loved seeing more of her because she and Trinity were already so fun as side characters in Play Pretend.

I was honestly a little disappointed by the "villain". After the suspense aspect in Play Pretend, Sean was a little lacking. I really wanted that same suspense as Play Pretend provided but was left wanting more. We got hints of Sean's wrong doings in the past but his part of Theo & Brynne's story left me a little disappointed.

Overall Free Falling was a great addition to this series and I'm beyond excited for the next installment. I'm so pumped to see Trinity get her time to shine, although Trinity always shines bright! 😜

Free Falling is such an amazing story!!! I love the banter between Theo, Brynne and the rest of the Caldwell siblings. This book was well written, fast paced and emotional. The first chapter had me intrigued and I could not put it down! Claire is officially an auto buy author for me!

I like the texts. It’s fun and with the times. Scout’s poems are so heartbreaking but heartfelt. I loved the auction! The spice is hot!🔥

Playboy extraordinaire finds out he's a dad to a 12-year-old and also he's attracted to his (much) younger sister's best friend and they sext and then it becomes real and then three seconds later there's another stalker and also they're saying "forever" after being together for all of two weeks.

This one was simply not for me. Minus points for: a 25-year-old woman bursting into literal hysterical tears over being called fat, the hero having basically no redeeming qualities outside of being hot, a severe lack of chemistry and connection between our couple, in this small ass town we have another/separate violent stalker??, the EQ of the hero being negative one-thousand, the third-act break-up, the list could go on but I'll stop there.

I loved Theo and Brynne's flirty banter throughout book one and this book. They had a fun chemistry but both didn't want to upset their family. When Theo finds out about his daughter Scout and moves back to Cedar Ridge, Brynne and him grow a little closer as she is one of Scout's teachers. Their flirting becomes more and they soon can't stop the pull between them. A guy that Brynne went out with and who also works with Theo, won't leave her alone and keeps starting trouble, can They navigate through it?

In this sequel it brings to life the story of Scout, Theo and Brynne. Three souls who feel like they have to go at life alone or at least keep people at a distance so their heart doesn't get broken. Theo never wanted a family or romance, Scout always had her mom until she didn't and Brynne had Trin and Mason that was enough. This book made them tear down walls and expose the deepest parts of themselves to get to the heart of it and it was hot, sweet, sad, and heartwarming. I can't wait for Trins book with Dean.

I really liked Brynne, Theo and Scout and Theo’s family and I loved that Brynne and Theo had scorching hot chemistry that turned into a true love match. I think that because I was so extremely fatigued while reading this, I found everything about the bad guy, Sean, so overwhelming but I get that he is supposed to be hated for everything he’s done and there were trigger warnings. Thank you to author Claire Brooks for the opportunity to read this early!

Claire did not disappoint! After reading Play Pretend, I couldn’t wait to dive into Free Falling and it was everything I hoped for.

Beautifully written with characters that felt so real and relatable. I absolutely loved Theo’s strong family support and his hilarious group chat, such a fun dynamic! Theo and Brynne were perfect together. This reformed playboy finally met a woman who didn’t care about his money and wasn’t afraid to call him out. And the sexting? Total 🌶️!

Now I’m (impatiently) waiting for Trin’s story!

Thank you so much, Claire, for the ARC, I love all your books!

I was thrilled to receive an ARC of this book!

This was a complex love story with multiple plot lines/elements - some sophisticated, including trauma and stalking, and some more fun like the family building and hilarious banter between the characters. I wish I had read book one of the series as I felt like I missed a few subtleties and knowing more backstory would have been helpful. Otherwise, this was a great read that kept me hooked from the beginning!

I really wanted to like this. It has some of my favorite tropes: single dad, billionaire, and small town romance. Brynne and Theo were just lacking chemistry for me? It was so hot and cold that I couldn’t decide if I wanted them to get together or not. The antagonist in the story kind of just pops up intermittently. The climax felt really rushed. Scout, the daughter, often fades into the background. For a decent sized book, I was left wanting. I think I’m not the target audience and that’s okay!

This is the first ARC that I’ve been lucky to read and it did not disappoint.

We are first introduced to Theo and Brynne in Claire Brooks’ first Cedar Ridge book: Play Pretend. In that book we get a glimpse of some flirtation between Free Falling’s FMC and MMC.

I absolutely loved Play Pretend, however it was a much slower burn than Free Falling. Free Falling was a fast burn and MUCH spicier. Claire brought the fire for Free Falling.

Free Falling has some of my favorite tropes: single-dad, best friend’s brother, and an age-gap. 😍

The story begins with 12 year old Scout learning about her mother’s passing and Theo learning that he is a father to a 12 year old from one of his one-night-stands. He leaves all he’s known for the past 20 years to move back to Cedar Ridge where he has family that can help him with Scout.

Throughout the book I adored seeing Theo’s growth and watching him step up and try so hard to be what Scout needed. It was nice to see him not give up, while also not overstepping the boundaries Scout placed. One of the TW’s Claire gave for this book was “Conversations about death/what happens after.” When I read this I wondered if I would be able to get through the book because I struggle with anxiety due to thoughts about that exact topic, however Claire really handled that part of the story spectacularly and SO BEAUTIFULLY. It really was the turning point in Theo and Scout’s relationship and I loved to read it.

When it came to Theo and Brynne’s relationship, as I first started, it’s a much faster burn than Ronan and Willow’s in Play Pretend. I enjoyed the constant back and forth between them and when things got hot, they were ON FIRE. Theo’s dirty mouth was so out of left field. I wasn’t expecting that and I was here for it. The auction scene… Oh my! So much pent up tension.

Claire has a special touch when it comes to the villains in her stories. You can tell almost immediately who the villain of the story is, however you’re always left wondering WHEN and HOW they’re going to strike. I will say in Free Falling, I was left shocked. I thought we saw the end of him and I was so mistaken. Bravo, Mrs. Brooks with that ending because I didn’t see it coming.

It was a great read and I cannot wait to see what Claire has up her sleeve next for the Cedar Ridge series.

ARC Review – Thank you to the author for letting me read this gem early!

I was beyond excited to get my hands on this book, especially after falling in love with the first one in the series, Play Pretend! The cliffhanger at the end of that book had me counting the days until I could read Theo’s story — and let me tell you, it was worth every second of the wait.

Without giving away any spoilers, I have to say this might just be the perfect small town, single dad romance I’ve ever read. I’ve never really been into the single dad trope... but Theo completely changed my mind. He is the book boyfriend every small town needs — respectful, protective, caring, and incredibly lovable.

What I adored most was his character development. Watching him go from a city bachelor to a devoted father was heartwarming. You could feel how much he wanted to do right by everyone — his child, his friends, his community. He didn’t want to let anyone down, and that level of emotional depth made him so real and relatable. His friendships, the way he treated people, how dependable he was — I loved every moment of it.

And then there’s Theo and Brynne. Their chemistry? Off the charts. 🔥
I loved how patient and respectful Theo was with her, never pushing her boundaries but instead earning her trust, step by step. Their slow-burn romance felt incredibly natural, and when they finally got together... pure magic. Their dynamic was so well-written, and I found myself smiling (and maybe blushing) more than once!

But the thing that touched me the most was Theo and Scout’s relationship. Watching their bond evolve — from strangers to a real family — was simply beautiful. I loved how they slowly opened up to each other and became each other’s safe place. Their journey felt emotional and authentic in every way.

Scout was an absolute treasure. Her poems and thoughts really touched my heart, and I could truly feel what it must be like for a child in her situation. But seeing how she found peace, love, and a new home was just… magical. I genuinely hope we get to see more of her in future books (and yes, I would LOVE a scene where Theo freaks out because Scout starts dating 😆).

The little teasers at the end have me ridiculously excited for Trinity’s story! Bring it on!

🖋️ I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Review for Free Fall

I want to say a Thank you to Claire Brooks for being part of the ARC team. Free Falling was probably one of my favorite reads of this year. I love the banter between Theo (MMC) and Bryanne (MFC). The reformed playboy and his little sister's best friend just calls for some juice reading.

When Theo finds out he has a daughter (Scout) he never knew about and decides he wants to step up and be a dad. Not just a dad but tries to be the best dad for her even if it takes a while to get there. He helps her cope with the loss of her mom. I know personally losing a parent is a lot even at an older age and add that to being a young teen it's a lot. The way that Claire wrote Theo helping her, helped me personally also. I read this book while missing my own parents that had passed in the last couple years. The advice he gives Scout helped me also. Also watching the growth that Theo goes through is amazing.

Bryanne Hugh… ma’am you are everything. She is a teacher to middle schoolers right there and takes on a lot there. The years-long banter and innocent flirting with her best friend's older brother is everything I need. The confidence she has is just in aww. Her found family with her BFF Trinity’s family is great to read. The way that Theo is possessive and protective of her is something I feel that girl wouldn't want. When you're feeling down he won't let you feel that way about yourself. She encourages Scout to write out her feelings about losing her mom. Reading all of Scout's poems and letters to her mom was really touching.

Also Claire, can I join Trin’s book club? Please say yes!!! The fact she got her brothers to read romance, smut and some out there smut. I am not going to lie. I was hysterically laughing in public too many times reading her talks with everyone in the book club about the next reads. Also in my note I wrote and I quote “ I want Trinity's story next!” I can't wait to read her story next

I would recommend this to anyone wanting to try a small town romance, teacher and reformed playboy, single dad, best friends brother, friends with benefits, found family, and a always a plus age gap. I can’t wait to go back to Cedar Ridge for her next book in this series and read Trins book.

ARC Review | Free Falling

This is the second book in the Cedar Ridge Series. I fell in love with this town and the characters in the first book Play Pretend. We got a glimpse of Theo and Brynne in the Play pretend and it was such a pleasure to delve deeper into their stories.

Theo Caldwell is wealthy businessman. He’s also a playboy. Brynne Hughes is Theo’s little sister’s best friend. She’s smart, caring and wears her heart on her sleeve. Theo was living his best life in New York City without a care in the world. Until his world was turned upside down. Finding out he has a daughter changed his whole life and had him picking up his life to move back to the small town in Maine.

Okay I already fell in love with one of the Caldwell brothers but now two?!? The way Theo has my heart. From becoming a reformed playboy to watching him show up for his daughter and become the best dad 🥹🥹 He was definitely so clueless but the way he showed up and kept trying was just so sweet. The talk he had with Scout on death 🥺😭 needed that. And Scout she is just so much like Trinity it’s not even funny. I love how she is sarcastic with just the right touch of feisty but also so sweet and innocent all in one. Let us not forget Larry ❤️ Oh and the way Theo tries his best to show up for Brynne 😍 He is completely out of his element with both girls but he STILL shows up.

The sexting the spicy scenes are to die for. Who knew both Caldwell brothers love to praise amongst other things. I love the banter between Theo and Brynne. Brynne is so feisty and doesn’t take his bs.

I absolutely love the relationship between Brynne and her brother Mason. I really really hope to see more of it and more of him. Also how does the amount of raccoons keep growing. 😂 gotta love Trinity for feeding them. Also Sean needs to go burn in hell. And can we please see more of Asher and Trent? Okay last thing Trinity needs to give us more with Teenie Weenie Deanie😂 Claire you have me hooked. You did an amazing job with this.

Claire Brooks does it again in the second installment of her Cedar Ridge series, where the next Caldwell sibling meets their match! Brooks’s writing is easy and clear, giving it this comforting and conversational feeling that makes it really easy to engage with and fall into. Her characters are fun, interesting, humorous and heartfelt. Her small town, the Caldwell family, and the complications of life all work hand in hand to develop this slow-burn, sensual romance to life.

Free Falling brings Theo Caldwell back to the small town he grew up in, and his family still lives in, with a 12 year old daughter her never knew about. Theo is a ladies man, he never through he would settle down or have kids, but after a tragedy he learns he is already a father, and through trial, error, support of family and friends, and opening his heart and learning to grow, he becomes a really wonderful dad. Amidst the turmoil of new found fatherhood, is the small town support and a slower pace of life that brings Theo and Scout together as father and daughter. It is in this town Theo also is really confronted with the sizzle chemistry between him and Brynne, his sister’s best friend. I adore watching a playboy learn to be a family man and fall head over heels for a woman he just can’t stop thinking of! This romance is gentle, sensual and slow, as these two rediscover each other and take a chance on what they might become. They dance around each other and their flirting is off the charts. Then at the heart is the beautiful relationship they both develop with Scout on their own as well as how they support each other in the care and unconditional love of Scout.

Claire Brooks with a beautiful level of care and understanding brings to life the story of building a family you never thought or wished you had, but also one that you would never give up. Watching Theo grow into a dad and boyfriend is equal parts heartbreaking, sexy, frustrating and heartwarming. Brooks is easily becoming an author I am going to immediately pick up and I would strongly recommend her works!

Thank you so much to Claire Brooks and her team for an eARC, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I love a single parent trope in a book and this book delivered! After a fatal car crash, Theo is contacted to be the new caregiver for his daughter, Scout, who he did not know existed. As a self proclaimed playboy, this transition to single dad is not easy to say the least. After speaking with his mom, he decides to move him and Scout back to his rural hometown to be closer to his family. He has seen his sister’s bestie, Brynne, on a dating app. Of course he’s been lowkey obsessed with her and vice versa for YEARS.

Given that this is a very slow burn romance and in general with Theo and Scout’s relationship, I thought the pacing of this book was great. There was one point where I was like “ugh for this to be a single dad book we haven’t focused on his relationship with Scout that much” and then BOOM. deep scene with Scout and Theo. For their relationship, I really liked seeing them progress steadily throughout the entire book and when Theo would have his “my daughter” scenes, they felt very natural.

Theo and Brynne had undeniably instance chemistry together. Even when they were just messaging on the dating app, it was crazy to see their level of compatibility. Of course they build their relationship on the physical side first, but they really delve into the emotional side and grow separately as well as together.

The only thing that wicked me about this book is the age gap. Normally, this level of age gap would be fine for me in my books if they just met. HOWEVER!!!! As mentioned earlier, they both talk about how they have kind of had a thing for the other for years. Now from the marketing we know Theo is 37 and Brynne is 25. I’m writing this review a little after reading it so maybe this was addressed in the book and I just don’t recall.but at what age did they start to have these desires for each other, especially Theo. Like even if Brynne and Theo’s sister met and became besties 5 years ago, Theo was 32 and Brynne was 20…… What business did he have thinking about her like that?? I think we could have aged down Theo and still had the same storyline, even just to him being 30 in the book.

This book is great for you if you love slow burn or secret romance, kinky spicy scenes, and protective parents! (that was a crazy sentence to write) This is the second book in an interconnected standalone series and in full transparency, I have not read the first book. I’ll deffo go back and read it but it is not necessary to read that before this book!

Thank you so much to the author for sending me a free copy in exchange for my honest review!

✨️ ARC 📖 REVIEW ✨️

I am a Claire Brooks STAN. Now that we got that out of the way, I'm gonna throw another one at you. Ready? Okay, this book had me in allll of my feels. I had heartbreak, love and joy all the way through this book.

There wasn't a time in this book that I didn't want to keep reading. It just do happens I can't stay up for 24 hours to read and do all of the things 🙄. I know its a crime against humanity.

Claire has a way with her words that will forever capture my heart and twist it a little so that I cry 😢 when I read her books. This one was definitely one of those books!

Brynn was a beautiful soul who loves to help the kids she teaches. She just has a huge heart ❤️. And I absolutely loved that about her. She truly gave us a view when she took Scout under her wing and showed her what family truly is! And I can't say that I wasn't rooting her and Theo on the WHOLE time!! When they were finally together I couldn't help but squeal and kick my legs 😁.

Theo, my man who had it all but didn't truly have it all. He had money, but he didn't understand the full ramifications of having a 12 year old girl under his care! Thank goodness for Brynn and his family because they truly came in clutch!

I loved that he wanted to do his best for him, Scout and Brynn in every way that counts! He put in the effort even if he missed the mark a few times! I truly loved his effort and how much he wanted Scout to not just like him but love him.

I couldn't get enough of this book and I am sooo sad that its over! But that just means that Claire is going to make me have some big feels again and dare I say cry again?
