THIS ADVENTURE THEY CALLED LIFE

I enjoyed this clean historical western tale that will read well as a stand-alone. It has a great cast of characters, plenty of interaction, a little bit of angst, mystery, and secrets. When an accident has Mack searching for a doctor, he will be directed to the town of Sunny Ridge for assistance. Almost there, he will meet up with Josie Weissborn, who will help Howard into her wagon and her Aunt Nell. The story is about finding a home, forgiveness, stop blaming yourself for something you could not control, new beginnings, and moving forward.

“Happiness is all around you. All you have to do is seize it.”

Mack and Howard lost their parents when they were young and were placed in an orphanage. Mack was determined that they needed to stay together and declined a family when they were only going to adopt him. Then years later, when a family wanted to adopt Howard, Mack knew he had to run away and give Howard a chance. Now, they are adults, finding each other again, working together, but keeping secrets.

Meeting Josie, Ruthie, and their family will allow Howard a chance to heal, and Mack must find a way to continue with the surveying job that Howard was his lineman. When Josie offers to help, he is shocked but eventually allows her and Ruthie to join him—and they make a great team. A freak snowstorm has them sheltering in place, costing Mack precious time he has little of—and then an accident test these travelers. Josie and Mack are developing feelings, but that cannot happen—he is going to move on with the next job offer—and she has a family that depends on her.

“After everything that’s happened the past few days, I think we can call each other friends.”

“What about your sister? Your aunt and uncle? You’re willing to leave them behind?”
“I’ve always dreamed of adventure, Mack. And I want that adventure to be with you.”

The story is a great adventure that involves some life and death moments, learning to accept help, trusting others, and stop living in the past and look towards the future. Mack and Howard have failed each other in being honest with communications—and it takes hearing it from someone else to make it right. Mack learns that you can’t just assume what goes on with another person until you talk it out. Josie is an adventurous soul, and her talents in drawing and taking photographs will help Mack in his surveys. Together, they have learned to laugh and love and seek new adventures while giving Ruthie a loving family—one who enjoys traveling and working together.

“I want you to be my family. If you’ll have me. I need you. Josie—Marry me.”

What a sweet and romantic novella! I loved getting a peek into Mack and Howard’s lives as orphans. Mack’s sincere love for his younger brother really showed through in those flashbacks. I also liked the way he and young Ruthie related to each other, as they were much the same.

The romance between Josie and Mack grew quietly through the story as they worked together. I especially enjoyed the last half of the novella when Josie’s admiration for Mack grew into more. The epilogue was a great one!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

A Short, Pleasant Trip to the Old West

This historical romance story was such a pleasant one, I read it in one sitting. I'd read Rodeo and Juliet a while back and enjoyed it, but I think I liked this one a little more. They're both sweet, clean romances, though not inspirational, and seem to stay pretty close to what was likely the usual modes of behavior associated with the era. I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys this type of refreshing and peaceful story for winding down after a stressful day.

Fun Read; Possibly Mistitled?

Lacy Williams' Much Ado About Josie delivers adventure, medical drama, heartache, and romance in nineteenth-century Montana. Mack Anderson, a stoic, self-reliant surveyor, and Josie, an amateur photographer and part-time nurse who lives with her grandmother and niece Ruthie, spar their way to love while Mack's brother Howard recuperates from a compound fracture in his leg.
Mack resists letting Josie help his brother, but when Howard's recovery pace puts his team behind schedule for their contract, he reluctantly accepts her offer to go with him--and Ruthie's pleas to accompany them both. She's eight, loves to hide and eavesdrop, and will likely be more trouble than help, but they agree, not knowing how helpful she'll be.
Mack's independence gets him in trouble when he gets injured in an avalanche and needs to rest at the campsite. Josie firmly refuses to let him leave and uses the opportunity to take pictures from the top of the mountain. Her motives are not solely selfish, though, and her strategy helps Mack get an extension on the contract he thought was lost.
Flashbacks to Mack's childhood in an orphanage and refusal to leave his younger brother explain his need to depend only on himself and his need to care for Howard, making an initially unsympathetic character understandable, and his conversations with orphaned Ruthie enlighten Josie as to his motivation and desire to help Howard go home with money to marry his sweetheart. Josie, always the cool one, breaks down after an especially fiery exchange, and Ruthie comforts her with more wisdom than a girl her age normally has.
Overall this was a fun read; the injury scenes were tense but not frightening, and Josie's solution to the deadline issue was clever. My only problem--a serious one that cost it a star--is the potentially misleading title. In a book called Much Ado About Josie, you'd expect Josie to be the main character, the one who earns (or doesn't earn) "much ado". That's true of the first two chapters--her name is used so often it drives Mack bonkers--but after that, it's mostly Much Ado About Mack; he gets flashbacks and a backstory that Josie doesn't. Her photography is the only signature of her character. But Much Ado About Mack just doesn't have the same appeal to the intended female audience that Much Ado About Josie does, so even though I'm not giving the fifth star back, I can understand the titling tactics Lacy Williams has employed. I can't give Much Ado About Josie my highest recommendation, but it will provide hours of enjoyment for fans of historical fiction!

Surveyor Mack Anderson has everything under control until an accident waylays him and his brother. With a job on the line, Mack is forced to accept the help of one overly-cheerful, majorly-irritating, and quite pretty Josie, something Mack is not enthused about.

Sometimes, life just doesn't go his way.

PLOT
The plot is simple. Effective, but simple. The book is a short novella, so I didn't expect a ton of action packed in.

SETTINGS
Taking place in Montana, Williams does well describing the farm, town, and mountainous, rustic scenery. I could just picture the mountains and the snow.

CHARACTERS
Mack and Josie put a new meaning to, "polar opposite". Their banter made me laugh out loud at times, and I liked how they clashed.

This book's strong point were Mack's flashbacks. I wanted to cry for Mack. Williams did well making him a sympathetic character.

Ruthie was simply adorable, too, although I'm not sure a kid would have been allowed to roll her eyes as often as she did. Her propensity for mischief had me smirking, as my younger sibling is quite similar, and I could just picture the schemes being baked in Ruthie's mind.

FAITH
Just a passing mention of a Bible, which I found weird because the Bible is said to be one of Josie's most treasured possessions. This is definitely only a "clean and wholesome" book.

VIOLENCE
A man is injured by an avalanche; another man has a broken leg.

CONTENT WARNINGS
An inappropriate comment was made: "I want you to touch me". While that could go either way, it wasn't proper and it made me wary. I've read one other of Williams' books and found it nice and clean. I wasn't expecting that comment.

WHAT I WASN'T FOND OF
It almost felt like insta love. Now, it is a novella, and I expected the romance to arrive quicker than usual, but one minute Mack's harping about Josie and the next he's kissing her. Plus, Josie's attracted to him the minute they meet, and "tingles" race up her arm when their hands brush...two minutes after they meet.

Also, the commas were few and far in between. This is a personal thing, but it did distract me.

CONCLUSION
While I'm wary about that one comment, this was a nice little read. The cover is stunning and fits Josie perfectly, and now I'm a little curious about Juliet. If you like historical western novellas that are mostly clean, you may like Much Ado About Josie.

Josie is missing her sister Juliet but is kept busy running her Aunt and Uncles hotel and looking after Rosie, an orphaned girl that is living with the family. What Josie really wants to do is be a photographer and is trying to convince her Aunt to let her go on a trip into the mountains. When Josie comes across two brothers, one who is seriously injured, she has no idea how her life is going to change.
Mack is a surveyor who likes his nomad lifestyle just fine. When his brother gets injured, he must find help immediately. Everyone suggests he finds Josie, and when he does find her, he gets more than he bargained for.
Mack, Josie and Rosie head out on an adventure that will change their lives. They will all find just what they did not even realize they needed.
I absolutely adored this novel by Lacy Williams. I loved Josie bright sunny disposition sparring with Mack throughout the book and how their characters developed. Rosie added so much joy and fun into the story as well. This novel had everything I love, fun scenes that made me giggle, a sassy female lead character, and a happily ever after. Thank you so much to Lacy Williams for an advanced readers copy in exchange for my honest review.

What a fun read even though there are plenty of tense moments in Much Ado About Josie: Sunny Ridge, Montana Book 2 by Lacy Williams. In this historical romance two very different personalities are attracted to each other. If Josie is a ray of sunshine then Mack is a storm cloud.

I appreciated the fact that Montana in the 1800’s was much more open to women pursing their interests, when there was time of course. Day to day living takes up much of the day whether it is running a hotel or being a surveyor. If there is a villain in this story it might be the trials of everyday living. There the land is strikingly beautiful but also terribly harsh. Josie knows all this but sees it firsthand again with Mack. Together they begin to come to an understanding and appreciation of each other. While the conclusion seemed fast, I love the epilogue. Plus I love young Ruthie. It would be wonderful to read her story when she is all grown up.

The publisher/author gave me a complimentary digital ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Twin sisters, Josie and Juliet, moved to Sunny Ridge, Montana, after the death of their parents. In the last book, Juliet meets and marries Rodeo. They have moved some distance from Josie and their aunt and uncle. Ruthie is an orphan who lives with Josie, Aunt Nell, and Uncle Ezra.

The story opens with Mack, a railroad surveyor, carrying his brother Howard to Sunny Ridge for medical attention for Howard, whose leg was severely broken. Mack is on a tight schedule and needs to return to his surveying job, but he needs a lineman. Josie offers to accompany him (with Ruthie) to assist in the work. After being unable to find anyone else to hire, Mack reluctantly takes the two ladies.

From this simple plot, things get more complicated quickly. There are exterior things, such as Mack's surviving an avalanche, being injured in the falling ice, and his injuries affecting the completion of his job. But more important are the interior changes in Mack throughout the story. He starts out as a closed personality, with only Howard as a friend. However, it becomes clear how much Mack has given up to provide the best for his brother.

This book offers much that I admire; the author provides an original plotline, and the growth in the characters really matters. However, this book did not click with me. I can't be more specific about my dissatisfaction with this novel other than to say the characters weren't interesting.

This was a simple, quick read at only about 170 pages or so on Kindle. I found it to be a fun read and the characters were pleasant enough with some development. I found I liked the idea of the story - a young lady has to go help a grumpy surveyor because his brother got hurt and he has to reach his deadline. I didn't like the turn of events where he changed because of a severe head injury. It just wasn't realistic enough for me to really think it made sense. I really did like that there was nothing in the story to give me pause and there were only a couple of kisses in the book. The story was enjoyable and I wouldn't mind handing it off to one of my girls to read. Do note that in the Kindle version, the story ends at about 71% as there were 2 very long excerpts other works by the author to tempt you.

Much Ado About Josie by Lucy Williams is a historical romance where one finds love up in the mountains.

The book opened with an intense need to find a doctor. We are introduced to the character Mack who is really serious about getting his job done, he is grouchy and hard to get along with. We also meet Josie who is this bright personality that the town loves. Both are the opposite of each other, though when Mack needs help, Josie is the only person he can turn to.

This is a classic grumpy vs. sunshine trope. I got a little perspective into the railway business in the USA, and it was a very candid story. Each character having their own secrets to share, and their own dark past. I really like all of the characters, and it was a nice and sweet story about finding and keeping a family.

I recommend this novel to anyone who wants a short and sweet, grumpy and sunshine novel.

This sweet and clean historical western romance is about a cheerful and helpful young woman named Josie who takes a liking for introverted Mack. Mack, who lived in an orphanage for most of his life, has issues with dealing with people yet comes out of his shell when his brother is hurt on the job. Josie assists in his transfer with her young sidekick Ruthie. Both of them go off with Mack (which is somewhat questionable as to propriety) to help him finish his RR surveillance job when Mack gets hurt. However, she has difficulty penetrating his hard shell. Short bedtime read for those who enjoy this genre.

I received a free copy of the clean historical romance Much Ado About Josie: Sunny Ridge Montana by Lacy Williams and this review was given freely.
Poignant with a fair amount of drama, this novel contains the injury prone Anderson brothers, expresses an orphan's loneliness and wariness to trust, and contains a heartwarming ending.
When introverted surveyor Mack Anderson seeks help for his injured brother Howard, he doesn't expect to be attracted to the extroverted and outspoken armature photographer Josephine Weissborn or his need to rely on her continued help.

Linda Ford and Lacy Williams have written books about twin sisters. Ford’s book, Rodeo & Juliet, comes first, and is a hoot! This book is about the other twin, and it’s really good too. I enjoyed reading all about Josie and Mac’s adventures and mis-adventures. Finding out how early land surveys for map making were done was fascinating too!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Fabulously Fun Series!

The Sunny Ridge, Montana series is so much fun. The characters stole my heart in the 1st book, and Much Ado About Josie simply brought more heart stealing characters! It was fabulous watching Josie and Mack fall in love as they grew in faith while dealing with issues from the past. I loved the wonderfully inspiring storyline. Now we just need a story for Ruth!

Loved this clean historical romance by Lacy Williams. She always does such a good job. This is the first Sunny Ridge Series book I have read. I will go back now and catch up on the other titles. Lacy gives us well crafted characters you either love, or love to hate. She also does a wonderful job taking us to the different locations. When I read one of her books I am taken away for a short time, and that is a good thing.

This was a sweet, historical romance novella (about 100 pages on Nook EBook). It is a very easy read and clean with enjoyable character development. After the book ended, there was an epilogue that gave an update on all the main characters (Mack, Josie, Howard and 10 year old, Ruthie) that explained where they were in their lives a year later !! I absolutely loved the "Where They Were" one year down the road ending. :)

I enjoyed this story of adult orphans who have close ties to a sibling. Josie is a determined woman who wants to photograph the world. Mack ran away from an orphanage and doesn't feel worthy of love. I enjoyed getting to know the precocious orphan Ruthie who makes her home with Josie's aunt. You will find excitement when Mack is injured in a snowslide while they are surveying in the mountains. I recommend Much Ado About Josie. I received a complimentary ebook. This is my honest opinion.

Loved it!!!

Josie is was the person I would imagine myself as if I lived back in her time. I love her adventurous spirit. I also love how she cares for others without thought of herself. Mack is a great character as well. I saw my husband in his story. Lacy Williams is one amazing story teller, and I hope there is a book / story for Ruthie.

Josie Maps Montana

When Josie wanted to go to the mountains to try her hand a photography, the only was seemed to volunteer as a surveyor 's assistant. Mack didn't want to take along a female but had little choice when his brother broke his leg. Everyone said Josie could do anything, so Mack gave it a try. Little did he know how Josie would change his life.

Josie is someone to be admired!

The first story is very intriguing., full of adventure and suttle romance. The next story was a sample. I didn't know that until I read it,now I need to buy the book so I can finish the story, it's very entertaining. Lacy William's is a very talented author.

Josie finds love in an unexpected way. Mack arrives at her home with his injured brother. They are opposites in personality so there is no attraction. But he needs help finishing his survey trip. Josie is his only "helper" available. What they suffer from the winter elements makes a cute, unbelievable story. But it's a story so it doesn't need to be believable, just entertaining.

Lacy Williams has a knack of getting to the point in a short book. Josie is the Belle of Sunny Ridge & Mack is the stubborn, taciturn surveyer who seems prone to accidents. Together they find a way to finish a survey in spite of his brother's accident. A good, short read. There were some typos but it didn't detract much from the book.

Much Ado About Josie

A wonderful story of Mack and Howard, brothers raised in an orphanage until showers was adopted and Josie, being raised by relatives and how they overcame their differences. I appreciated Josie's strong character and love of family she worked hard to share with Mack. Believable characters and descriptive scenery. Highly recommend Lacy Williams' books!

This is a nice sweet story. Definitely a grumpy/sunshine trope. He was so grumpy that I wondered how she could possibly fall in love in such a short time but I do recognize that people tend to feel love for those that require their care so she was in a good position to have those feelings. They do seem to be well suited in the end.
