Bad Boys, Bad Boys: What Does A Lawyer Do?!

Rate this book
BAD BOYS, BAD BOYS, What Does A Lawyer Do, is a delightfully hilarious compilation of stand-alone anecdotes, short stories, and irreverent ruminations. The book focusses on the humor of life as a criminal defense attorney citing both stupid, silly, and thought-provoking chronicles. This book shines light on never-seen or often-overlooked experiences, sharing insights from complexities thrown at lawyers every day. BAD BOYS is presented as a window into experiences few witness firsthand--how attorneys defend the indefensible (or at least mitigate their crimes). Chapters share insights Mr. Wegman has gained not only as an attorney often compared to the fictional character, Saul Goodman, but as a person with 63 years of life experience.

The non-legal stories that curious minds want to know aren’t obviously funny topics, but Wegman’s irreverent humor is on full display as he takes the reader up to a 1,000-foot observation level where sparks of contemplation and laughter become evident and cognitive dissonance dissipates. This is not a textbook; it’s a collection of thoughts (musings if you prefer) shaped by careful analysis and research. Throughout this book, you'll encounter skepticism and a refreshing way to think about various subjects including science, the military-industrial complex, the nuances of language, and many others—always spotlighting the absurd. When touching on climate change, Mr. Wegman doesn’t write as a climatologist or as a lawyer, but as an individual with God-given common sense. You don’t have to agree but hear him out. BAD BOYS is a Reader's Digest-like collection of topics that have fluttered around in Wegman’s zany mind trying to escape.

Whether you're taking a brief break on the toilet or enjoying a leisurely sail in the Caribbean, delve into a chapter without losing track of a character. BAD BOYS is crafted as a refreshing cocktail of humor, sprinkled with moments of folly and a dash of absurdity. But its intent isn’t only laughter; it’s to ignite a degree of critical thinking about topics that often fly under the radar. While much of the content is playful, Wegman weaves in discussions on matters that, while not inherently humorous, expose the ridiculous elements of our everyday lives.

So, hop aboard Wegman’s carousel of craziness as he explores some candid reflections and shares his opinions about things you probably never knew you cared about until now.

A hilarious book full of legal anecdotes

I borrowed this book thanks to the Kindle Unlimited subscription that I share with my girlfriend, and I read it between my tablet and phone using the Kindle app.

The author uses his vast legal experience working as an attorney and his hilarious sense of humor to write a book full of fun anecdotes he has endured during his professional life. You will laugh out loud reading the short stories and also wonder what we have done as a human species to end up with people like those the author had to defend.

Once the anecdotes are finished, the author focuses on sharing his opinion on various topics, such as COVID or the traffic trap in a very small town in Virginia, all of them delivered with the same level of hilarious humor.

The great thing is that you can pick up this book anytime and continue as you wish since everything is composed of short stories or anecdotes.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I want to thank the author, publisher, and Goodreads for allowing me this opportunity.

This book wasn't at all what I expected. I thought I would be reading a lot about the legal process from a defense attorney's point of view along with some funny anecdotes from cases he'd defended. There was some of that in the beginning chapters, but then he went off into some "don't trust the government or science" stuff. I knew, obviously, from reading the description that there would be some off-topic thoughts and observations of Mr. Wegman, but I wasn't expecting it to be what it was. It also wasn't nearly as humorous as I expected. That said, it was well-written, insightful, and, at times, fascinating. Even though it wasn't what I was expecting, I found it to be a really good book that I enjoy and would recommend.

I’m a huge fan of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Saul Goodman was a captivating character. Hearing the author of this book compared to that character made me want to read it. I was hoping for the kind of stories Saul might tell. The author does a good job of placing us in the shoes of the person who commits a crime. He also does a good job putting us in the shoes of the person who is tasked to defend that person’s behavior. I loved that the author made me laugh at, but also made me think and empathize with people’s stupid actions. I often found myself thinking I’d been there and almost done that. The author’s style can best be described as word, but in a good way. He’s not redundant and the tangents he goes off on are relevant, comical and thoughtful. I think this book will appeal to a few different types of readers. One, if you like real-life, funny stories, you’ll love this book. Also, if you’re considering a law career, you’re likely to feel inspired. Overall, this is a funny and inciteful book, and I recommend it.

This book very briefly touched on stories related to a lawyer's career, which is what I had wanted to read about. Instead,
it turned into an anti government, anti science, complaining about people at the theater, tinfoil hat ramblings about NASA and Satan, among other things.

This book started off strong and then just went into a completely MAGA fueled diatribe. I didn't even finish it, it was just gross

Wegman’s Bad Boys Bad Boys is part courtroom confessional, part social satire, and part philosophical musing—seasoned heavily with gallows humor and a splash of heartfelt introspection. The book is split into two sections: the first filled with hilarious, bizarre, and occasionally touching anecdotes from his long career as a criminal defense attorney; the second a freewheeling mix of commentary on language, politics, and modern culture. If you’ve ever wondered what it's like to defend the indefensible—or you just want a brutally honest glimpse into the absurdity of both the justice system and humanity itself—this book delivers.

What hit me right away was Wegman’s comedic timing. The man knows how to tell a story. In Happy Birthday To Me (Chapter 2), he recounts with surgical precision how a single moment of inattentiveness during voir dire turned into a masterclass in foot-in-mouth lawyering. When he chirped, “Oh, September 2nd—what a great day. That’s my birthday,” right after a grieving widow said her husband died that day, I cringed so hard I nearly dropped my Kindle. That scene is a perfect example of what Wegman does best: turn his own blunders, and his clients’ downright legendary stupidity—into vivid, laugh-out-loud tales that reveal deeper truths about how fragile the line is between ordinary life and legal chaos.

But it's not all jokes. Some stories really get under your skin. In It Wasn’t Me (Chapter 3), Wegman walks through a court-martial rape case where the accused was found guilty but sentenced to only 90 days. That paradox—the brutal charge against the surprisingly lenient sentence—throws a wrench into everything we assume about guilt, truth, and justice. Wegman doesn’t moralize; he lays out the tension and lets you sit with it. His reflection on how credibility, not truth, is often what wins in court made me pause and stare at the wall for a bit. I’ve felt that same frustration in my own work. Court isn’t about justice; it’s about persuasion. His honesty about that, and about how easy it is to get swept up in your own client’s story (Davey and Gravy Train, Chapter 5), made me feel like I was having a late-night drink with a colleague who’s been in the trenches.

If you’re looking for legal theory or a polished ABA how-to, this ain’t that. But if you’ve got any experience in the justice system, especially defense work, you’ll find yourself nodding, laughing, maybe wincing a bit. This book is perfect for law students who need a reality check, burned-out attorneys who need a laugh, or just anyone with a dark sense of humor and an interest in courtroom drama. Wegman’s style is unfiltered but never mean-spirited. He’s that rare kind of lawyer who can take the darkest parts of the job and still find a human (and often hilarious) angle.

In his latest offering, Robert L. Wegman delves into the unpredictable world of criminal defense with a refreshing mix of humor and sharp observation. This book transcends the traditional legal narrative, inviting readers to reflect on the intricacies of human behavior while provoking laughter along the way. Author's storytelling prowess shines as he transforms everyday situations and courtroom antics into thought-provoking gems that resonate with both legal professionals and lay readers alike.

Author's approach is reminiscent of the insightful commentary of beloved journalists like John Stossel, whom he admires for their ability to highlight the absurdities of everyday life. He artfully balances humor with depth, noting that great humor isn't just for laughs,it's about making us reconsider perspectives we might have overlooked.

This duality makes his writing engaging and impactful, nudging readers to think deeply about the sometimes bizarre intersection of law and life.

Additionally, the book addresses significant contemporary issues such as the pervasive impact of social media on human interactions. He argues that while social media was designed to facilitate connection, it often leads to a sense of isolation and diminishes meaningful relationships. He highlights the consequences of "antisocial media," capturing this paradox with a poignant cartoon analogy that demonstrates societal disconnection even in digital crowds.

Author's candid reflections on personal experiences add a layer of relatability, reminding us all of our shared humanity. He explores how words hold power, capable of both uplifting and destroying, and underscores the importance of thoughtful communication in every facet of life. This exploration of language also serves as a critique of our evolving communication styles, hinting at broader societal issues regarding connectivity and understanding.
Ultimately, this book is a cocktail of levity, insight, and candid commentary on life’s absurdities, contractual obligations, and the human condition. It is an invitation to engage with our world, mentally and socially in a way that is both reflective and entertaining. Whether you're looking for a good laugh, seeking to understand the complexities of human behavior, or contemplating the implications of modern communication, this book offers a delightful blend of all three. Highly recommended
