A very light read and easy to understand book about weight loss & GLP-1! As someone who just got off the Semaglutide and lost about 16% of my body weight i can relate so much to the intention of Dr Jack Mosley and wished i read it before i suffer the side effects of being undernourished (months of constipation that i had to go through hemorrhoidectomy) Already bookmarking the recipes and cant wait to give them a try!
Not what I expected as it’s giving the pros and cons of weight loss drugs written by Dr Jack Moseley, son of the late Dr Michael Moseley. This is listed in the title. However, it does have some really nice nutritious meal recipes which are quick and easy for busy people.
It was very interesting to read what these drugs can do but they are still researching long term effects of them. Most listed are fairly new (in UK) so there’s no real evidence but he does warn about eating junk food and taking them after reaching your goal weight. He did say some who went off them did show after year later they’d gained 2/3 of the weight lost.
Can’t really fault this book. Well written, informative, not too detailed, balanced, supportive and helpful. What more could you ask? I feel educated, that’s for sure. Well done, Jack, your Dad would be very proud of you.
I was a big fan of the late Michael Mosley and I think he'd have written a book about the GLP-1 receptor agonists (aka 'the fat jab') had he lived. His son, Dr Jack Mosley, does an excellent job in describing the underlying science of Ozempic and related drugs and how they fit into our notion of a healthy lifestyle. Case histories are used to bring the subject to life and we get a balanced argument of the pros and cons of what is likely one of the biggest health breakthroughs in recent years. I think the most important point Dr Mosley makes is that the impressive weight loss that these medications induce will be accompanied by loss of muscle mass, as well as fat mass, and unless something is done by way of lifestyle modification, the person on the fat jab could end up in worse health than before. Like his father's books, Food Noise is accompanied by a collection of healthy recipes, with input from Dr Claire Mosley, Michael's widow.
I have long been a fan of the Fast 800 cookbooks, particularly the Easy (blue) and recipe (red) books which contain a lot of what I would call 'normal' dishes eg chicken curry, traybakes, tuna salad, etc. I did the Fast 800 diet and lost quite a lot of weight but once the initial 12 weeks ended I couldn't sustain the switch to 5:2 and slipped back into my old habits, albeit still often cooking/making recipes from the books because they are relatively simple and generally delicious.
In late May 2025 I started my GLP-1 journey with (realistically) six stones (38 kg) to lose. I had already bought this book, mainly for the recipes because I didn't even clock that it was about using weight loss medication LOL, but got put off because there are no pictures with the recipes - I tend to like the look of a dish and then decide to make it. Anyway, nearly four months later I decide to start reading the book and found a lot of the things Jack Mosley says make sense. Obviously if obesity leads to a myriad of other health problems then losing the weight will reduce the risk and/or stop you getting them in the first place. These weight loss jabs were originally designed to treat Type 2 diabetes after all. Yes there are side effects, although there is some evidence to suggest that they are worse if you eat junk food or UPF and don't drink enough water. Upping your protein, water, and fibre intake can relieve the side effects and is a good idea generally anyway. I finished the book thinking that it had confirmed (with science) what I had already heard from various other sources, that these jabs can be a real game changer BUT you also have to change your eating habits otherwise there is a danger that you will either have to stay on the jabs for life or risk regaining all the weight lost - and the real kicker is that you regain fat and the healthy muscle lost doesn't come back.
So overall, science is good and explained simply with cross-references to the sources if required. When I flicked through the recipes they didn't look too bad either.
My one gripe is the number of times he mentioned the Fast 800 diet - by the end it felt like I'd paid for an advertorial or he was trying to sell me a Timeshare. I don't recall him ever saying there were other ways to eat with a calorie deficit whilst also eating healthily - the Fast 800 was just plugged over and over again.
Picked this up as I was genuinely interested in the hype of the buzzwords 'Food Noise' - whilst it did a good job at explaining it and how the new GLP-1 drugs are a great (temporary) cure for it, it did feel a bit repetitive.
At the end of each chapter is a bullet-pointed summary, which completely read like AI had summarised the paragraph rather than the author writing it himself.
The book also promotes the Fast800 diet (which is their family business) rather heavily - feels like at least a mention or two in each chapter, then in the final chapter, it is nearly in every paragraph. Marketing is not the forte of this Dr, it did not need pushing as much as it did.
Overall, not a bad book - some decent recipes in the second half of the book.
Probably great for those looking to understand how to get started on GLP-1 medication and a short history of it.
Very informative. I’d say an essential read for anyone embarking on weight loss injections but it’s also good to dip into about general wellbeing and diet - especially the recommendations about Mediterranean diet - even if just read the summary sections of each chapter and look at the recipes at end of book.
I found the book quite repetitive in places, but maybe some people with less knowledge of nutrition and the body might need that. Some good recipes but a shame they go over 2 pages in many cases, makes it difficult to scan and keep them.
Incredible book! I wish it was released before I started my journey last year. I’ll be taking lots of tips from it. Everyone on weight loss jabs should listen/read this.
I borrowed this book from the library, thinking it might have some interesting nutritional advice. However, it is really about the use of Ozempic and other weight-loss jabs. Whilst there is some very important information, backed up by research, the book felt as if it was an advert for his father’s Fast 800 diet. The whole style and layout of the book is identical to Michael Mosley’s writing. Parts of it actually felt very AI…bland and soulless with much repetition. However, sensible advice about the need to eat a balanced diet whilst trying to lose weight. Probably obvious to many, but the jabs have many side effects, many only just starting to be seen and documented.
A few nice looking recipes at the end of the book.
This book was not written for me. And I accept that before I read it and posted this review.
The book appears to be for people who know nothing about the weight loss injections or how to lose weight or how to exercise or eat healthily.
It is a lot of repetition of his father, Michael's, books. Some phrases are lifted directly.
Jack is not a confident narrator or writer (yet). It is his first book. Obviously it is a big plug for The Fast 800 programme. He believes in it. It's a family business. It has provided success for many people.
I think he has tried to be fair that some people cannot just do 800 calories a day and need more help. The injections do stop your brain constantly wanting food. The noise is still there at different levels for different people, but they help. But.....the injections do need to be backed up with good eating and regular exercise or you will never get off them. You need to still change your whole life the way you would with an average diet. The injections are a means to help you. As a temporary measure to drop the excess weight. But you do need a plan of how you will keep that weight loss off once the brain goes back to screaming at you all the time that you are starving.
There was a pdf attached to the book with a lot of recipes (they come from his mum Claire). There was a good amount of vegan options which is rare, as Michael was never pro vegan and The Fast 800 have no intention of creating a sample meal plan for vegans (I asked) even thought they do for vegetarians. Why not help vegans. The book (copied from Michael's) even says it's harder for vegans to work out the macros and protein. But yet they still won't put a plan together. Seems a daft business decision in my opinion.
In summary, if you know nothing about the injections and how they work this book will explain (although there are programmes on TV constantly that tell you the same). If you don't know what a Mediterranean diet is then the book will explain (or you could google it) and exercise to do is weight training or resistance.
I have read a few of Michael Mosley’s books in the past and I always liked his honest and genuine approach. I was interested to read the latest book by his son, Jack Mosley, especially with all the hype around weight loss jabs.
Like his dad, Jack writes in a very accessible and straightforward way. The chapters are nice and short and the book is separated into different subsections, making it easy to pick up and read a few pages at a time. The book is neither for or against the jabs, but encourages you to think very carefully about deciding to take them and making sure you get them from a reputable source. It explains some of the side effects and the results of studies that have been conducted so far and the long-term effects of what can happen to your body if you don’t eat nutritious foods when losing weight.
This book is similar to a lot of diet books out there but the focus on the impact of weight loss jabs set it apart as I haven’t seen any other mainstream books about them yet.
It has allowed me to make more considered choices about my diet going forward and the changes I can start to implement to see a decrease in my weight and increase in my health.
I haven’t tried the recipes yet but they look easy to make and use ingredients that are easy to get. They look appealing and I will definitely be adding them to my next meal plan. I liked that they serve 2, as I only cook for myself it makes it more convenient to make 2 portions, leaving one for another day.
The only downside to the book was it felt like it was constantly plugging Fast 800 which is a program developed by Michael Mosley and his wife. I understand it may be a useful option for some but I felt like it was too pushy with the numerous mentions of it which ended up putting me off looking into it.
If you are considering the weight loss jabs or just want to know more about their possible effects, and how to make positive changes to your diet, I would recommend this book.
A waste of time. The title is very misleading. There is little about food noise other than weight loss jabs reduce or remove food noise but it returns when the jabs stop. Half the book is recipes which fit in with the Fast 800 diet, or the 5:2 approach which Michael Moseley developed. Another 30% is the background to weight loss jabs and how they were developed over the years. Of the other 20% there are some FAQs but nothing earth shattering new or which can’t be found in other places. Not the helpful book I thought it was going to be. Sad that I wasted my money.
If you are struggling with your weight and or thinking about trying the weightloss injections then I’d really recommend this book.
It gives your stark reality of what to expect, how to prepare yourself, what you can do to limit side effects. But away from the jabs, it really is a great reminder of what we need to do to look after our body, food and exercise wise.
I had to return my Audible version as it probably should have been narrated by someone else. The book is okay, I didn't really learn anything new, it just reaffirmed what I already knew. The recipes were more things I know I should be eating but don't want to 😞
I wanted to know a bit more about the weight loss injections so many people are taking and this answered most of my questions. A quick read, and I would recommend to anyone thinking of taking injectables. Didn’t say anything new about how to reduce food noise without injections though.
