I was immediately hooked by this book. From the first page, I couldn’t put it down. The suspense is constant, and I loved how the story kept me guessing. The characters, especially Esther, feel so real and are really well developed. There’s a perfect mix of intrigue and tension that kept me turning pages. I would definitely recommend this book. I got a copy through an ARC program, and I’m really grateful for the chance to read it and give my honest opinion. It’s a fantastic story, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to experience it—definitely worth checking out!

This book was written fairly well and I thought the plot was interesting and strong. At times the story did drag a bit and left me wondering where it was going and not in a good way and could have used some better editing. Overall an enjoyable read, I would recommend it to others.

London, 1861.
When a bland, dowdy spinster shows up mortally wounded at Esther’s house, and dies in her arms before her GP father can come home to tend to the patient, Esther is shocked and overwhelmed with sadness for the woman. What a way to end your sorry life, having an accident and hitting your head whilst visiting a graveyard. Thank goodness the cab driver found her and managed to bring her to The Hardy’s home so she was at least with a familiar face when she succumbed to the head wound.
But as quickly as the woman died, questions arise. Why did she ask to be taken to Doctor Hardy, rather than the closest hospital. Who was she asking for, in her last words? And was this really an accident, or did someone deliberately bash her head in?
And who is this woman really? Because it soon becomes clear she wasn’t who she said she was.
The police isn’t that interested to find out. A poor woman’s life isn’t worth much in Victorian London. And when they find out her real identity, and what she did 10 years before, they close the case.
Esther doesn’t give up that easy though. The more she discovers, the more questions pop up. Why is the son of a lord so interested in the case, and what are her mother and father hiding? And who is watching Esther’s every move, making her fear for her own safety?
All is revealed on a dark and foggy night, and the answers while not be what you expect!

In Safe in Death she tells the story of Esther Hardy, an intelligent single woman looking for something other than marriage or teaching to give her life meaning. This was an enjoyable read with likeable characters. Esther Hardy becomes involved with the death of a woman called Alice. She is quite daring and is determined to discover who murdered her. There is more to Alice than at first appears. Samuel Godwin is a gentleman who lives with his uncle and he too, becomes involved in the mystery. Alongside the story is the history of the period and what is happening with the Royal Family. Esther’s father is a surgeon, so although they have some wealth, they are not of the aristocracy. There is also a lovable orphan in their household, who made me smile. The mystery is complicated and has a surprise or two, it kept my interest until the end. I look forward to reading more about these characters. I received a copy via Niche Reader and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Safe in Death: An Esther Hardy Victorian Mystery is a first-in-series book by S.K. Rizzolo, about a Victorian spinster who has chosen to be a detective in London; not officially, but as a result of a situation that lands murder in the lap of her family. As the daughter of a physician, she is familiar with the victim, and starts digging immediately. The story is filled with many of the penny dreadful tropes of the period, some as red herrings, some as bread crumbs on the path to the perpetrator. Fun and well-done, with interesting characters and a bit of romance. I would read more in this series.

I have loved S.K. Rizzolo’s Regency historical mysteries for many years. I was excited when I heard she was going to publish a new series of Victorian mysteries!
The first book in the series, Safe in Death, takes place in 19th century Victorian England, where a young woman who would rather solve crimes than do as society wishes is my kind of everyday heroine. When given the choice between marrying or becoming a governess, she doesn’t prefer either completely. She’d rather use her observation skills to help investigate murder mysteries!
Rizzolo’s amateur sleuth, Esther Hardy, is original, captivating, and intelligent, making the start to her next series entertaining and full of promise. Safe in Death is filled with crime, secrets, and their meticulous undoing, but as well a little romance and so much heart. Dive into the foggy, cobbled streets of London and the high society homes and be immersed in the era.
Highly recommended for any book clubs as there are many discussion points in this historical mystery, or for one’s own winter hibernation mystery reading marathons by the fire. Personally, I can’t wait to see what Esther will get into next.

This book starts with murder and suspense and only gets better from there. I did not want to put it down! The mystery surrounding the death of a woman in her father's Victorian medical rooms causes a twenty-something spinster to become a detective to solve the murder. In the process, she meets a mysterious gentleman whom she isn't sure she can trust and unwittingly puts herself in harm's way. Things get really dicey when a member of her household is kidnapped and she sets out to rescue them. Unputdownable and highly recommended!

Really enjoyed the book of a young (spinster?) woman in Victorian England. Not only is the character and her family believable, but the background of London and the death of Prince Albert really add to the novel. Love how the female is not held back by the society restrictions on the proper behavior of a young woman but follows the clues where there take her. Well written, excellent mystery, a fast-reading interesting tale. Highly recommend reading. Received a free copy from the niche Reader to read and am very glad I did!

Anyone who enjoys historical mysteries, particularly those with a somewhat prickly and eccentric spinster for a main character (as I do) will be in their element with this book.
The death of a young woman in the arms of our protagonist spirals into a mystery spanning decades with false identities, the death of an heir, love interests, scandal, and so much more. The story gripped me from page 1 and I'm looking forward to what I hope will be a long series.

I enjoyed the overall story, the mystery was quite fun, and Esther is an interesting character. But the writing jumped between ideas too fast and at times was a bit juvenile and awkward.

There was a certain air of mystique with this murder/mystery. Some parts seemed to drag, but it all fit together nicely in the end.

Great book which definitely needs more books to follow. Hope this is a start of a series!
