Meet Me At Midnight

Rate this book
Pumpkin patches, midnight skies, and a grumpy boy who might just believe in magic.

I never planned to come back to Enchanted Hollow. But when my stepmother sends me home to plan one last wedding, I find myself surrounded by pumpkin patches, twinkle lights, and the kind of autumn magic this town is known for. The last thing I expect? Luke Jackson—my best friend’s older brother. Grumpy, protective, and far too good at noticing when I need him most.

And then there are the letters. Secret, enchanted notes that once carried me through my darkest days. Letters from a boy I thought was only a dream… until I begin to wonder if the magic that connected us might have been leading me back here all along. This fall—under harvest moons and midnight skies—I’ll discover if happily-ever-afters are more than just stories.

Perfect for fans of small-town fall festivals, best friend’s brother romance, fake dating, and a dash of fairytale magic—Meet Me at Midnight is your next cozy, closed-door romance.

Meet Me At Midnight is a closed-door romance with cozy, magical vibes and no explicit scenes!

Seriously, this is the cutest little Cinderella modern day retelling! 🤭
First 5 star read of 2025 and it’s so deserving.

Ella and Luke were childhood friends. Ella’s was Luke’s sister’s best friend and they were neighbors! Secretly crushing and longing for one another but not knowing how to maneuver those feelings.. a non magic believing Luke takes to some magic letters to see if he can confirm just how much of a sham they are, and the town, but he gets one right back and started with a pen pal relationship with another girl.

Follow along their story to see the craziest, wildest, cutest happily ever unwind.

I really enjoyed this modern take on a Cinderella story. The Once Upon a Time and fall vibes were perfection!

Luke and Ella were precious and I loved their sweet story. They had some great grumpy/sunshine tension. There were so many great tropes and elements to this story and I loved all the layers. Ella and Luke had this sweet relationship and their romance was adorable. Luke was devoted to those he loved and hard working, though he was doubtful at times. Ella was determined and caring, but learned so much about accepting help from others. The character growth was relatable and well written. Love the way Luke took care of her and Ella challenged him to believe. Their story was romantic and had a hint of mystery as the author slowly revealed the magic hidden in the town.

Magic deserves its own paragraph! This OUAT fan was in heaven reading this book and catching all the subtle nods to the show. The magical elements were so fun and played well into the story. I can't wait to see what other magical mischief the town gets into in the other books of the series. And so many great fairytale connections and pop culture references too!

The side characters were fantastic and the family group chats made me giggle. Gaby and Lucy are great and I can't wait to revisit Enchanted Hollow to find out more about all the siblings and Lucy and the Gold family.

There was a little bit of world building at the beginning that had to set up the story, but once the pace picked up, it was an exciting, sweet, magical ride! The magic, romance, twists, and turns made for such a fantastic story! And that ending *chefs kiss*!

Meet Me at Midnight is the first book in the Enchanted Hollow Romance Series. This delightful Cinderella retelling is filled with everything that makes a fairytale special: a charming knight, a lovely but troubled girl, a quaint town full of interesting characters, and a touch of magic that brings the story alive.

Monique Brasher skillfully creates a modern version of the "Cinderella" tale that is sure to make you smile. It features classic elements like a wicked stepmother, two stepsisters, and the Midnight dance, along with many nods to the story you know. The chemistry between Luke and Ella is enchanting, and their journey unfolds over two time periods, ten years apart.

I won't share too many details to preserve the story's magic. Some highlights include magical letters, the charm of a small town, the warmth of family support, and funny text exchanges between the characters. Ella learns to be brave, and Luke fiercely protects his family and Ella. This retelling offers a fresh twist on the familiar tale. I’m excited that more books are on the way in the Enchanted Hollow Romance Series.

This author is new to me, and I read this book after starting what is technically Book 2 and realizing that I needed more background information to understand what was happening. I’m so glad I did because I really enjoyed this book even though it isn’t a genre I usually read. Monique Brasher manages to keep you in suspense, especially when it comes to Charlotte’s activities, to keep you laughing, and to keep you believing in magic. I enjoyed this book and will now go back to ‘Tis the Gingerbread Season.

Review:
Loving Ella and Luke. Luke will do anything to protect Ella, he is like a knight of shinning armour. And I enjoyed their moments together. And that his whole family is kind of a fairy-godmothers to help her to the Midnight in the Hollow dance. Hehe... and I love the town's magic. And moments with his sweet daughter who loves fairytale and their moments together with Ella are just so sweet. Loving the siblings’ texts to each other teasing him with Ella. And also Sebastian which made me kind of thinking whether I like him or don’t like him haha…(can’t spoil much. You will have to read it.) hehe… And love her stepsister Laila who encourages Ella to find love and also, she genuinely cares for her. Love that his family and the people in town trying to matchmaking them together. All of them work together to save the farm and the town’s magic together.

"Be brave" Love that Ella grow in her character that she can rely on people for help too and be brave to stand up for herself to say no to her stepmother's schemes. “Be kind.” Although Ella is being mistreated, she still never stops being kind to people around her.

P.S I would love to ride on a pumpkin carriage too. hehe… so cool. And also write Enchanted Letters. Hehe…

I was gifted complimentary ARC. All opinions are my own Thanks to for @moniquewritesromance the ARC.

This story is so precious!

I love how popular modern fairytale retellings are, and Meet Me at Midnight is a well-done Cinderella tale where Ella can't get her HEA the first time around due to the manipulation of her evil stepmother. She agrees to play by her stepmother's rules and bide her time to go claim the life she wants in Enchanted Hollow. But her stepmother regularly rewrites the rules, and Ella's future and very happiness are on the line for nearly the whole story. There is some moderate angst, but it is really well balanced with loving, life-speaking characters.

That brings us to Luke, MMaM's Prince Charming, all gussied up in cowboy chic form. He doesn't fully understand or buy into the magic of the town, and he struggles for much of the story to figure out what is magic and what is free will. It keeps him from acting on Ella's sudden reappearance in his life. He is a wonderful, protective MMC, and I really loved his character, especially once he gets out of his own way.

There were a lot of secrets in the story, and so a lot of opportunities for miscommunication. I REALLY loved that the author chose not to take that path. The conversations were occasionally forced but necessary, so we never get mired down in extra drama that didn't need to be there. There is already plenty with magic contracts and evil stepmothers in play. My one tiny little thing is that Luke and Ella end up fake dating after a misunderstanding, and it felt a little unnecessary other than to intentionally force them together. The magic was already working on them, and so was his family. I would have preferred it as the instalove/whirlwind romance that it truly was since they had a lot of history. The misunderstandings probably did result in admitting feelings sooner than they would, which was definitely not upsetting. The addition of a couple gray characters kept things interesting, but since this is ultimately a "good wins" story, I got to be satisfied in the end!

4.5 rounded up to 5 stars

I received a complimentary copy of the author's story to read and review. All thoughts contained here are my own.

Monique Brasher has a way of weaving classic fairytales and throwing them into modern-day small-town Texas, only to come out smelling like a rose!  I have read a few of her adaptations before but knew I needed to go back to the first one before anymore came out – I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest!  This book is split into 2 parts, 12 years apart, but it all makes sense I promise!

Ella Taylor lived a dream life for a while, but sadly things changed first when her mother passed away and secondly after her father did.  That’s when her existence became an inconvenience for her stepmother.  She fought hard to earn her keep while longing for normalcy, like she received from her neighbors, who were also her best friend’s family!  Ella’s private escape was exchanging letters with ‘Patch’ and daring to meet up with him at Midnight at the Hollow, but not everything could be as magical as the town she lived just outside of!  Fast forward, she has been commissioned to serve as a wedding planner back in Enchanted Hollow, but even being removed for 12 years has not changed the pull the town has on her.

Luke Jackson is a no nonsense, no magic type of guy!  He wants to take care of the ones he loves and the farm he helps tend.  So, when Ella up and left 12 years ago, his life was altered in ways he didn’t foresee.  Now, he’s still helping take care of the family farm, but he’s also a single dad with a curious and fairytale obsessed 8-year-old!  While he isn’t fond of the farm being the site of a celebrity wedding in general, but during their busy season is even worse.  Not afraid to play hard ball with the planner, Luke wasn’t prepared to go heel to boot with Ella!  Yet, the two fell back into their old groove!

What happened from there was nothing short of magical!  The interactions that this pair had plus a meddlesome town and his family, made feelings and emotions that were left unsaid and unanswered before stir to life!  I loved this story!  The creativity that went into naming all the places in this town is pure genius!  The hints of future stories (I hope) and the joy that radiates of the page made this book almost impossible to put down!

Luke + Ella

They have known one another a long time. They live next door to each other and have spent a lot of time talking but never realized it. This town is a magical town with enchanted letters and Luke & Ella have been sending letters to each other. One day the letters stop and it is because Ella moves away due to her evil step-mother. She’s back on Luke’s farm after 10 years to help plan a wedding. Luke is now a single dad and quickly realizes that he still cares for Ella. He decides he is going to risk it all and write one more letter and see if he gets a response. He has a feeling it has been Ella this whole time.
This book was a very sweet love story & I really liked how Luke encouraged her to find her voice and stand up for what she wants. I am big fan of the best friend’s brother trope and loved all of the Friends references, too! I enjoyed the group text with his siblings and the bucket list!

This book has Cinderella vibes with a fairy godmother, pumpkins, & magic.

—Quotes
✨”I’m choosing to be here,” he replies, a little more forcefully. “No matter who you are to me: friend, family, girlfriend… please don’t question where I want to be.”
✨Inside, that woman is an explosive ball of sunshine, desperate to light up the world around her.
✨”I won’t stop reminding you that you’re wanted, Ella. Without conditions, without strings,” he breathes. The words settle against my heart, soothing the ache that’s lived there for years.
✨I once thought she needed a knight on a white horse to sweep her away, remove her from the things that caused her pain. Ella doesn’t need anyone to rescue her—she’s always been braver than she’s given herself credit for.
✨Luke feels like home because he is. He’s warmth, safety, love, and compassion, wrapped up in this wonderful package that has always accepted me for who I am.

Y’all, I definitely judged this book by its cover when I chose to put it on my TBR. I mean, look at the pretty colors!

Anyway, I jumped in with only the blurb and the cover to go on. Once I hit the T-Swift references, I knew I was in for a treat.☺️

Ella lost her parents young, and lived with her step mother and step sisters during her teenage years. She was mistreated by her family, was super close with her next door neighbors, the Jacksons, & secretly adored the oldest brother Luke. Adding to the mix, she and her magical pen pal were supposedly soulmates, making feelings super complicated. On the fateful night she was to meet her pen pal, she is forced to move away from her hometown and everyone she loves. Ten years later, Ella returns to her hometown to plan a celebrity wedding, with her primary partner in planning the same best friend’s brother she once loved. With whimsical magic and meddlesome townsfolk, these two navigate loss, friendship and love to ultimately find their happily-ever-after.

I really enjoyed Monique’s spin on the classic Cinderella story. She incorporated real-life elements into her plot in a fun and refreshing way. Ella was the “pathological people pleaser” who just wanted someone to see her😏. Her growth during the story was honest and needed. Luke’s love for her shaped so much of character arc, and his realization that they were connected from the start was so sweet. He wanted to ultimately love and be loved, and Ella’s love for him did just that.

I’m excited to read more of Monique’s backlist, including Laila’s story. 🤩

This is a clean, closed-door romance with kisses only. There is mention of parental death, child mistreatment, and divorce. The author includes a note at the beginning of the book.

Meet Me At Midnight is a beautiful modern retelling of Cinderella in an enchanted town in Texas. There are so many fairytale references throughout this story it would be difficult to name them all!

I absolutely loved Ella and her relationship with the Jackson family and how close they all were. I also appreciated how Ella and her step-sisters were able to become friends and support each other.

Ella and Luke’s friends-to-lovers story is how I think friends-to-lovers should be done. None of the “but what if this changes everything and I lose their friendship”, only a worry that they don’t feel the same way as they grew up as close as siblings.

The magic woven throughout this town is so unique and enchanting and makes me wish I could visit a place like this!

Ella stayed strong throughout the story and we got to see her grow and learn to depend on others and accept love she’s never felt before.

Luke was an absolute dream with his care and protectiveness towards Ella, Lucy, and his entire family. He supported Ella at all times and helped her learn how to accept help and love. He was ready to step in whenever she needed him, but would also support her so that she could fight the battles herself.

The entire Jackson family was a delight and I hope the ending of the story points to everyone getting their own story in the future.

Content Warning:

Magic (mostly light magic but hints at some darkness tied to one particular family)

If you've ever wondered what you'd get if you mashed up Once Upon a Time + A Cinderella Story + Gilmore Girls... well, the answer is Meet Me at Midnight! From the moment I first heard about this one, it became one of my most anticipated reads (Cinderella has a special place in my heart because of its role in my own love story!) and not only did it not disappoint, it also far exceeded my expectations! This story was the perfect blend of the classic Cinderella story elements with just the right amount of magic and all the great small-town vibes... while still feeling very unique to itself too... and I was absolutely here for all of it! Right from the start, I was drawn into this story and this magical town. With each page I found myself drawn deeper in and I could not put it down... this is definitely one of those books that will have you kissing sleep and/or productivity goodbye until it's over, but I have absolutely no regrets! Luke and Ella have such a wonderful chemistry between them, and I was so happy to see them get their chance at a happily ever after. Magical letters, hilarious sibling chats, small-town gossip and all the fall vibes... there truly was so much to love in this story and I am very much looking forward to seeing what happens next in the series!

Meet Me at Midnight is a closed-door romance with kisses only and no language.

This story is difficult to describe. Yes, there are magical fairy tale aspects, but the emotional depth of the characters is universal.

It's easy to forget that the story of Cinderella starts with narcissistic emotional trauma.
Ella grows up grieving the loss of her mother and then her father. She lives under the constant disapproval of her stepmother because she's simultaneously too much and not enough. She must constantly minimize her needs and meet the needs of others without drawing too much attention to herself.

Luke is the protective older brother of Ella's best friend. Their large family farm next door, including lots of siblings, loving parents, and a grandmother is where Ella finds refuge until she's forced to give them up.
A lot of love, hard work, and a little magic make this one of the sweetest stories of emotional healing I've read. Add in plenty of humor, pop culture references, and lots of meddling siblings— this book checks all the boxes. My heart is so full.💗

And lets not forget Luke, the hot pumpkin farmer. 🥹😰😮‍💨🫠

"There’s no real magic in this moment except the magic of our own making. Like time is suspended, trapping us in a bubble where she’s safe. I wish I could keep her here.
'I’ve got you.' A heavy sigh of relief escapes as I utter the assurance. I lower my forehead to hers, brushing my thumbs against her cheeks. Her skin is soft to my touch, and I wonder if she feels the same way I do when she’s touching me."

✨You need this book.✨

This was a delightful read filled with fall fun and fairytale feelings. As a fan of the Once Upon a Time TV series, I enjoyed visiting a world similar to Storybrooke and seeing some references to the people and magic there. The story was a bit longer than what I normally read and seemed to drag, but others may like the relaxing pace. The letter writing was fun. It really built up anticipation to see how Luke and Ella would react when they found out who their secret penpals were, but I was kinda disappointed that they just rolled with it. I was hoping for more shock or surprise, but I did like that there wasn't any miscommunication. I also enjoyed all the fall festivities. Almost the entire story is set on a farm that has pumpkin fields, a maze, and flower gardens, and it made me wish I had gone to a farm like that this year. This book is great for fans of sweet contemporary romance who enjoy a little magic and fall with their reads!

Many thanks to the author for sending me an ARC. All opinions are my own.

Meet Me at Midnight by Monique Brasher was an absolute delight to read. It felt like a refreshing breath of fresh air, proving that a captivating romance doesn’t need a hint of spiciness to be engaging. The story was beautifully wholesome, allowing the emotional connection and the depth of the characters to truly shine.

I especially appreciated how the author focused on the nuances of the relationship—the slow build of trust, the heartfelt moments, and the authentic struggles the characters faced. It’s rare to find books that balance romance and storytelling so effortlessly, and Monique Brasher nailed it.

While I’m starting to write stories with a little spice to suit my own storylines, Meet Me at Midnight reminded me why I love reading books without it. Sometimes, it’s wonderful to lose yourself in a story that feels cozy and pure, with all the feels and none of the heat.

This book is perfect for anyone who values emotional depth and a clean, well-written romance. I highly recommend it to readers looking for a refreshing change of pace in the romance genre.

Meet Me at Midnight by Monique Brasher is an absolute treat for fans of fairy tale reimaginings, small-town charm, and cozy autumnal vibes. This delightful retelling gave me major *A Cinderella Story* vibes—one of my all-time favorite movies—and captured that same magical, heartfelt feeling while standing out with its fresh and unique storytelling. From the moment I started, I was captivated by the enchanting town, the swoony chemistry between Luke and Ella, and the perfect blend of humor, sibling banter, and fall feels.

Magical letters, small-town gossip, and laugh-out-loud moments brought a whimsical charm to the story, while the deeper themes of courage, gratitude, and embracing one’s unique qualities made it truly special. Ella and Luke’s journey to their happily ever after was sweet, heartwarming, and completely unputdownable—I couldn’t stop reading until the very last page!

With its closed-door romance, sparkling kisses, and inspiring reminders that there’s magic in the mundane, Meet Me at Midnight is a feel-good, uplifting love story that will leave you smiling long after you’ve finished. If you adore sweet rom-coms with a fairy tale twist, this one is a must-read. I’m already looking forward to diving into more of Monique Brasher’s enchanting books!

What a fun, cute story! 😄 I really liked how the town was magical, and how that affected various elements of the locations, food, people, and the enchanted mailboxes that deliver your letters to your soulmate! Ella and Luke were so sweet together, and loved each other since they were teenagers, they just didn’t realize it then. The author did a good job pulling in all the Cinderella elements into a contemporary setting!

I’m not the kind of reader to be bothered by typos, when I see one I notice it obviously, but it doesn’t detract from the book for me. But this book didn’t just have typos, it was like thoughts or ideas the author was trying to portray wasn’t fully thought out, so there were so many times I was confused. 😅Whether it was about what’s happening, what a character was thinking, some revelation that wasn’t actually stated so I’m just neutral, trying to figure out what’s going on, while the character is all amazed. I don’t know, something about the writing just made it hard to read for me, but I still liked the story!

I absolutely loved this story! I couldn’t put it down because I kept trying to figure out how it was all going to turn out. This is a sweet, modern version of the Cinderella story with elements of fantasy/magic mixed in. Ella and Luke were separated in their youth, but now Ella is returning to plan the wedding of Holly Everheart, a famous singer who has ties to Ella’s hometown. Holly wants to have her wedding at Luke’s family’s farm. This means Ella and Luke are reunited and sparks are flying. But there’s a twist with a stepmother and the magic of the town. I enjoyed the heartwarming characters and the magical feeling in the book. It felt like a Hallmark movie mixed with a fairy tale. If you love happy endings where good wins, love conquers all, and a touch of magical mischief, you’ll love this book too!

PS. I think I know which characters should be the next book and I can’t wait to read their story!

Delightful! The underlying Cinderella storyline attracted me and I enjoyed reading Ella and Luke's story. I enjoyed going back to Enchanted Hollow with all its unique and mischievous inhabitants. While Luke was skeptical about the town's matchmaking antics, he couldn't stop his own journey to love. Ella's determination and persevering spirit is inspiring that even in the face of deep pain and family troubles, she continued to push towards her goal. Holly and Cade's wedding preparation presented an opening for a new direction in her life, pulling her to the life that she always desired.
I love how Luke continue to encourage her to believe in herself and was always there for her. His family is simply amazing and it was heartwarming to see that her stepsisters became close friends with her and had her back.
The author did a beautiful job weaving a modern day story telling of Cinderella and the magical twist in the story is simply thrilling and brings back memories.

Enchanted Hollow lives up to its namesake. Seriously, I fell in love from the start. The magic blended with reality so naturally. The pumpkins were a fun touch, too.

The characters were not what I expected. They were better! Ella made the most of her situation and did well for herself. I didn't expect most of the Cinderella elements to happen in the first part of the book, but it worked out really well in my opinion, since the rest of the book was freer to chart its own course. My opinion on Laila changed fairly early, which was a nice surprise. I enjoyed the wedding planning. Luke is a giant green flag. He is supportive and deeply cares about Ella. They were childhood friends and almost high school sweethearts. Now, he is a divorced man whose wife abanoned him and their daughter, but he still falls in love with Ella all over again. Like before, he helps her with her problems and respects her choices. He's protective but not overly so. Also, Luke's entire family is amazing; the text conversations had me laughing. Lucy turned out to be a wonderful addition.

Someday, I'd love to hear Cade and Holly's story, but for now, I'm excited to read the next couple of books in the Enchanted Hollow series. Highly recommend.

Meet Me at Midnight by @moniquewritesromance is like if a Cinderella story was written by a novelist and not a Disney channel writer - all the wonderful elements of a modernized Cinderella, written well and with a dash of magic thrown in!

As a long time fairy tale retelling enthusiast (particularly Cinderella!), I was so excited to read this romance. It more than lived up to expectations. Being purposefully vague to avoid spoilers, there are literal fairy godmothers and pumpkin carriages, town magic, and a swoony and Cinderella-speed romance, all in a modern Texas setting complete with a pumpkin patch.

Definitely recommend giving this retelling a read! Thank you to the author for the copy. All opinions are my own.

Oh this was a super fun read.
I really enjoyed all the Easter eggs for various fandoms, there were probably a few I didn't catch too.

I really liked the second first few chapters that read like their own mini short story, but then was relieved we had a time jump to an adult version of almost the same story over again, but in more detail and with more satisfying outcome.

Recommend for anyone but especially for fans of:
You've Got Mail
Cinderella
Once Upon a Time
Taylor Swift
Gilmore Girls
Friends
Second chance (no spice) romance, small town magic, found family, fake dating, best friend's brother...

Super fun read, looking forward to the next book about Laila which upon finishing this book realized it COMES OUT TOMORROW

How fun!

Oh my! I have found a new favorite

Meet Me At Midnight is a delightful tale. I am not a huge fan of fairytale retellings but yhe cover caught my eye so I gave it a try. I am so glad I did. I love everything about this modern day story. The characters of Enchanted Hollow are delightful, well most of them are. The stepmother is horrible and Ella has a long journey to find her HEA. I loved the magical mailboxes and letters. The fairy godmother, magic and wicked characters all combined to make this a charming tale. The ending is swoony and leaves me with all the feels. I am excited to keep reading the series and find out how the other stories go.
Excellent clean series with no language or agenda. The kisses are sweet. I would let my younger teen read this.

This Cinderella retelling was done very well, the magical realism and the storyline were interesting and a new way of telling the Cinderella story!

The beginning of the book was a little slower for me and I didn’t feel that interested in it, but then it picked up and I was hooked. I loved the characters, Luke was great and his daughter was pretty cute. The whole family was sweet and caring, I love when a book has a close knit family like this!

The stepmother is, obviously, evil, but everything about her and how she used Ella has a new spin, which was pretty cool.

Meet Me At Midnight has quite a horrific twist in this Cinderella retelling. That witch of a stepmother should have someone practice emotional blackmail on her! If only Ella had realized she was always enough. Thank goodness she makes it back to Enchanted Hollow and renews her friendships with Luke and his family. I do not want to spoil a minute of this delightful tale, but I will tell you that help comes to Ella from more than one possibly unexpected source. There is a smidge of suspense and a bit of magic - just to keep things interesting. I had a delightful time reading this even though I read the second book in the series first!

So so so good!! I loved the main characters as well as sooo many of the side characters and can’t wait to see them again in future books hopefully! I am mostly a fantasy reader while reading the occasional rom-com so this book was a perfect mix of both for me and I think is one of my new favorites! If you’re a fan of fairytales and sweet cozy romances then I highly recommend!
