Mona Brenner is a twelve-year-old girl in 2030, living comfortably in Aurora, CO. Yet the "republic" is not a democracy anymore. Fear grows louder around her, and then her grandfather disappears.

There is no way back. Tyranny and fanaticism are to deepen and last in a country ruled by the same dynasty wielding unlimited power. As an adult, she tries to save her family in a shrinking and burning country where science cannot contradict the Bible, where women are blessed in the eyes of God through men, and where common people become the dependents of the Big Houses—the Virtuous. In this new holy world, Mona struggles through pain and loss, becomes stronger, though, and learns how to enjoy life when she can. She says to her daughter, "The future is yours, Eve, and your children’s. I know; you get what is delivered to you. No choice, like it or not. It will be hard. Nobody’s ever been exonerated from the time when they lived."

The question being then: who will survive? And where on a hot, dying planet?
