The reason is very simple. Property is a very tax-friendly investment."
For an accountant, Allan Mason's unique blend of cringe inducing self-help and practical humor makes a bland topic like tax surprisingly easy to follow and entertaining.
Putting personal reservations aside about the problems posed by rent-seeking property investment in an economy shaped by slow productivity growth and a housing crisis - this work does an excellent job in explaining the tax incentives that make renting, buying and selling land make sense in Australia. While not a personal preference to invest in property as an asset class, it is nonetheless crucial that to understand the Australian economy one must have a good grip on its property market.
It also does not prescribe any particular investment strategy but instead sticks to what it knows in outlining the relevant tax considerations an investor must account for when making any investment decision. One issue to flag with such a work, like much of the author's work on tax, is that it needs to be updated on an annual basis in line with any changes to the legal or economic context. A further issue to consider is that this work is targeted at and only relevant to the Australian context.
I really like this book. The content is very relevant to a property investor in an Australian setting. It provides great insights into the strategies that are used by other people (mainly to reduce tax). But one still needs wisdom to determine for themselves whether the strategies suit their circumstance.
The bible for investing. Allan does a terrific job of diving into every aspect of property tax. It can get bogged down in lingo due to his in-depth approach and not all of it will be relevant to everyone but its foundational messages are strong and education extensive.
Very enjoyable book (yes for a tax accounting book) be advised, this is not a get rich quick scheme. It's a genuine guide to the Australian Taxation System and how you can use it (depending on your situation) to invest in the property market. It's a guide and an insight, providing you the tools so you can conduct your own research to apply these tax strategies to your own situation. Very interesting and thought provoking. We dont get many Australia specific financial books. This was brilliant.
