A must read for anyone interested in local history around Wollongong. As a young man growing up in Unanderra in the 2010’s Frank Arkells legacy remains scattered throughout the region. From the plaque infront of the IPAC to Arkell Drive in Figtree the remants of Arkells influence on the region are not hidden.

Perhaps more sinisterly the grip of institutionalised historic and endemic child sexual abuse within the region is still actively hidden by the organisations still operating in the region.

Eklund’s nuanced take on this grim chapter in local history is second to none, it is rare to find such a personal and committed read. Many wollongong residents including myself have personal ties to the schools, places and clubs written about. Eklund illustrates the city’s nuanced character and history masterfully.
