Ralph Angelo's superhero prose novel, HYPERFORCE, published by Cosmic Comet Publishing, is a tour de force in the depiction of superheroes and upervillains operating on Earth and beyond.
It's so much fun to read, and it breezes by so quickly as you delve into this self contained universe of these unique superhumans.
I came away with a better understanding and love of superhero modern myths as each character represent familiar archetypes and tropes. The thing is, Mr. Angelo is able to distill all of these great elements and make well rounded characters with substantial strengths and weaknesses.
In many ways, HYPERFORCE, is what happens when you combine qualities of the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Avengers, and the Justice League of America and create a globe trotting, galaxy spanning superhero force who form a loose alliance to protect the innocent citizens of Earth from maniacal supervillain threats and intergalactic threats. And the best part is that every chapter feels like a single comic book issue as the superheroes go from adventure to adventure.
HYPERFORCE begins with Prince Bolton (alias Starbolt) and his mentor Mar-cus fleeing the forces of General Zarring, the leader of the coup d'etat on Bolton's planet, that dethroned Bolton's parents, who are his prisoners, and caused the young prince and his teacher to go on the run. Bolton and Mar-cus land on Earth with Zarring and his forces right behind them. They engage in combat, and as matters get more tense, a superhero known as Captain Power comes to their aid. However, that's not the only heroes who arrive on the scene. Soon enough we see Solaron and his nephew, Dragonfly, come to lend some help. Then we have Silver Shadow and her brother, The Creature, arrive to help turn the tide against Zarring's forces. It's a massive superhuman battle royale somewhere in New Jersey that brings in emergency services and the National Guard.
Soon after the battle is over, with General Zarring's forces being decimated by the Bolton and the superheroes, Solaron realized that a superhuman force was needed to take care of big threats that could not be dealt with alone. He realized that this one incident was a look at things to come. And the emerging superhero community needed to be ready to handle such crises in the future. Thus was born HYPERFORCE!
But such a team must be ready for anything. And I do mean anything.
And as the book goes on, the reader will see these superheroes have to deal with past issues that return to bite them, and their teammates, on their asses.
And the possibility of treachery from within such a brand new league of superheroes is ever present.
And all the while, an insidious menace is growing from behind the scenes that will have long lasting repercussions for the team.
Mr. Angelo knows how to write superhuman action. You feel every punch, kick, and energy force beam, that comes about during every conflict. And there's a unique and smart perspective that shows how these superheroes and supervillains would efficiently use their abilities.
And the pacing is first rate.
These guys are all on the move, with little time in the book to catch their breath.
However, when they do, it's time well spent. In fact, some of the best dialogue in the book happens during these moments.
And finally, their world and universe is an immersive one. Interestingly enough, in this book, superhumans have recently emerged in the public eye on Earth. The age of heroes has begun. And it is interesting to see how the civilizations of Earth will change because of their presence.
I can't wait to see future stories about these superheroes, supervillains, and their ever-growing universe.
l see a whole lot of possibilities for some great stories in the years to come.
Therefore, if you want to read an epic superhero saga in prose, written by an award-winning writer in New Pulp, who uses decades of superhero history and mythos as a basis to create an awesome force for good, then check out HYPERFORCE.
