A Patient Dragon and a Woman Learning to Trust Herself

This picks up right where book one left off. Lucan, our dragon shifter, has kidnapped Riley and flown her back to his cabin because his dragon side recognized her as his fated mate and basically could not function without her nearby. Riley is human, fresh out of an abusive relationship with her ex Drew, and she is not about to just roll over for another man telling her what she is to him. The world is falling apart around them too, earthquakes and chaos everywhere, and Riley has somehow been marked as part of an apocalyptic prophecy. So on top of learning to trust a literal dragon, she is trying to figure out what role she plays in saving or ending the world. Lucan spends the book proving himself patient and steady while Riley slowly claws her way back to trusting herself. Her ex Drew eventually resurfaces and tries to insert himself back into her life, and let’s just say Lucan does not take that well.
Highlights & Limitations
The healing arc is what got me. Riley’s journey away from Drew and toward actually believing she deserves good things felt real, especially a scene where Lucan just quietly caters to whatever she needs without demanding anything back. That kind of patient love after trauma is rare to see done well in this genre and I thought Carson nailed it. I also loved her cat Dobby, who is somehow the grumpiest tiny menace in an apocalypse and provides genuine comic relief.
My gripe is that Riley makes one truly baffling decision partway through where she goes to meet Drew alone, despite having a literal dragon on her side who would happily go with her. I actually paused the audiobook and said out loud “why would you do that” because it felt like a step backward for a character who had been building so much agency. It resolves fine and Drew gets what is coming to him, but that choice took me out of the story for a bit. I also wanted a little more time with the prophecy itself. It moves things forward from book one but still leaves a lot dangling for book three.
Narration & Performance
Having Bridget Bordeaux and JD Tomlinson split the dual POV made this such an easy listen. Bordeaux gives Riley this guarded, careful tone early on that slowly opens up as she starts trusting Lucan, and you can actually hear the difference in her voice by the back half of the book. Tomlinson’s Lucan is exactly what I wanted, low and steady, but he lets real warmth come through in the softer moments, like when Lucan is just quietly making her breakfast or checking in on her without pushing. The chemistry between the two narrators during the banter scenes made me laugh more than once, especially the line about how Riley likes her eggs. I will not spoil it but if you know, you know.
Final Opinion
I came out of this one still very much on Team Lucan. He is patient without being a pushover and there is a moment where he protects Riley from Drew that had me genuinely cheering. Riley’s growth felt earned even with that one frustrating detour I mentioned. If you loved book one, this is a worthy follow up, and the narration only made me more invested in these two. I am already lined up for book three because I need to know how this prophecy wraps up and I am very ready for Malachy and Willow to get their turn.

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to read this book in advance, and let me tell you- I am only disappointed as now I have to wait even longer for the third book!!!
Lucan is by FAR my fav MMC that Heather K. Carson has written. He is the perfect humanization of "could kill you, but is a teddy bear". His treatment of Riley is exactly what her character needed, and what I needed as the reader. Riley is an amazing character, and I felt more connected with her than I did Ember.
I cannot wait for the next installment of this series, I am excited to see what it is store for Willow. She absolutely deserves to find her happiness & love.
1000/10 would recommend this!

Wow another amazing hit in this series!! Literally kept reading it until i finished it and I just love her writing style. So fun to see how the next girl of the trio meets her sexy dragon shifter and how they survive in this apocalypse world. I also enjoyed how she captured various world buildings to reflect that. It was over too soon and I cannot wait to read the finale of this trilogy!!

I’m going to read the next one despite this book. The characters are so well done but the story was 100% predictable that I skimmed the bad guy part. It was just so expected.

Book 2 picks up right after book 1 and I loved it. Riley and Lucan’s story answers a lot more questions about dragons and the prophecy. I enjoyed Riley’s growth but the best part was Lucan and his dragon. He’s the perfect book boyfriend.

Well… okay. It was good? I think? I genuinely don’t know. I definitely liked the first book more.
Plot
Basically a continuation of the first book (shocking, I know), but told from a different perspective and with different characters.
The world is still ending, earthquakes, chaos, all that fun stuff. This time it doesn’t take place on the ranch but in… a mountain cabin? A house? I honestly don’t know. I kept imagining it inside a mountain even though they clearly mentioned dragons landing on the roof, solar panels, gardens, etc. So it was not in a mountain. But in my head it was. No idea why.
Anyway. It picks up where book one left off: Lucan kidnaps Riley, takes her to his place and they slowly get to know each other. Then brother shows up, shit happens, Riley’s past resurfaces, and there are more ancient runes. Yay. And mates, of course.
FMC — Riley
Human.
I like her. Kind of. I think.
Her leaving Drew was incredibly strong, like genuinely. Watching her heal, realize none of what he did to her was her fault, and slowly start to trust herself again was wonderful. But something about her and me just didn’t… click. Not in a bad way, though. Just... yeah.
Her immediate thought to Lucan saying “I didn’t know how you liked your eggs” being "fertilized, apparently” was really funny to me for some reason.
And her cat, Dobby. A grumpy little menace. I adore him.
MMC — Lucan
Dragon-shifter.
Listen. I like Lucan. I really do. But I cannot get over the fact that he kidnapped her. Yes, he’s a dragon. Yes, she’s his mate. Yes, his dragon was going feral from being kept away from her. But still. He kidnapped her.
I hate that I like him. He’s sweet and caring and thoughtful… but he still took away her choice when so much had already been taken from her. And even if it turned out well, that doesn’t magically make it okay.
And Ember being totally fine with it? No. Her initial panic made sense, but the second she heard “mate,” she was suddenly chill about the kidnapping? Absolutely not.
I do like that he knits, though.

This would have been 3 stars except for the fact that the FMC did the MOST CLICHÉ, STUPIDEST THING EVER and went off to meet the abusive ex-boyfriend on her own “because he threatened her friends”. They literally have dragons on their side! WTF does she think that loser can do? And her reasoning was SO weak and stupid, I almost threw my phone across the room.
Also, at the end of the first book, Ember was freaking TF out because her friend was kidnapped—screaming and terrified—right in front of her. She was concerned for her friend and all the trauma she’d been through. Then at the start of this book—less than 24 hours later—Ember is all, “I’m so excited for you! Has he marked you yet!?” Girl, your friend LITERALLY just escaped an abusive relationship and was screaming to be rescued mere hours ago. This felt SO out of character and insensitive that I was angry on Riley’s behalf.
Lastly, Riley and Ember are boning their dragons like rabbits, and there is no mention of potential pregnancy or birth control at all. At the end of this book, Lucan says, “You keep looking at me like that and I’ll put a hatchling in your belly.” and Riley’s all like, nah, let’s wait a few years. And I’m just BAFFLED that they haven’t just accepted that this is what he’s already trying to do since they’re all having unprotected sex. Are we supposed to just pretend there’s no risk here?
The rest of the book was decent and was mostly Lucan working to win over Riley, with more insight into Mallachy. I will still read the last book to find out what happens. But I hope they’re not all as stupid and selfish as they were in this one.

Another epic dragon love story by Heather Carson! I loved her first book in this series and this one did not disappoint. Tension, steamy love scenes, a creep of a ex stalking in the background, an earth in peril, it's all there for your reading pleasure.
This book follows Riley and Lucan, who we met in the first book. Riley is getting over a bad relationship, trying to find herself and her worth after being beat down by her yucky ex. He's such a creep, we hate him so much! Lucan is large, tall, handsome, muscly and makes bacon. We love him so much! At the end of book 1, Lucan has kidnapped Riley, knowing that she is his mate by her smell. So we begin book 2 with them flying to his cabin. She starts falling for him from moment one, but she can't trust herself. She needs to learn how to trust not only herself again, but him as well. So we see that growth in her through the storyline. He is so patient, so willing to give her whatever she needs. Ugh, I loved him so much! He may be my number 1 book boyfriend right now!
I enjoyed the heck out of this book and can't wait for #3! This is a great series, not too serious, just a wonderful, steamy series of books that make you want a dragon for yourself :) 5 stars from me!

This is Lucan’s and Riley’s story part of Sulfur and Spice.
I loved book one but Lucan and Riley’s story is one of those that reminds you being loved by someone should help you feel stronger and more alive. Give you power to be who you want to be not who they want you to be.
Riley’s story has so much depth and Heather does an amazing job of giving Riley her power back.
Lucan, dang it I’m still struggling to find the right words or word for this guy! He’s the warrior (touch her and ☠️), also gentle, understanding, and seriously hot! He’s also so much more!
This one has so many laugh out loud moments! Spice! Found family. Drama.
Then plot thickens in this book! so if you read the first be ready for twists. If you havent read the first, I highly recommend reading it.
Just a heads up don’t pick this one up before bed you won’t want to put it down! 🖤

If you like fated mates ❤️🔥, he falls first🥵, touch her and 💀 vibes, ancient mystery prophecies, magic 🌟 and heat🌶🌶🌶 then this is for you. Riley is the MFC that we deserve. Strong, resilient and learns how to stand up for herself in the post-apocolyptic world filled with villains of all shapes amd sizes some human, some not so much. One thing I do know is that Lucan is about the swooniest MMC I've read and I read LOTS of books every month. This was a quick read full of action. I loved it!

Sulfur & Spice book 2 did not disappoint! I loved getting to see Riley battle to find herself and heal from her trauma with Lucan’s help. What a cinnamon roll, but with a bit of fury.
The pieces I was curious about from book 1 definitely make more sense now, but oh boy do I still have questions! lol I’m honestly getting a bit anxious thinking about how much is going to happen in book 3! I can’t wait to experience Malachy and Willow’s story and see how it all comes together! To Ignite a Dragon’s Desire was fun, witty, empowering, romantic, and easy to read.

Very basic worldbuilding and plot. Supposedly this is an apocalypse where common items like bleach and food are in short supply, roads are blocked, etc. Yet they can go on a shopping spree and get silk dresses in her size and every shade of yarn.
My biggest complaint is that the FMC makes very poor decisions which put her in predictable danger.
Once again, authors: a few weeks of training does not give a person enough muscle or skill to drastically change. Also, please stop writing lines like, “This isn’t a movie/book. This is real life.” No it’s not.

another joint reading with my best friend (we read the first one before), it's still not my cup of tea but it had really interesting parts! i think i prefer ember & kieran's relationship, but i do like riley as a character more. i just didn't care much about her & lucan. but all the lore and mystery about the prophecy keeps me hooked in the story, and also im really excited for malachy & willow's book (i think malachy will be my fav) so yeah.

Absolutely Amazing, a must read !!
This story gets more intense each and every page that you turn!! Can not put this series down, heading straight into book 3 thank goodness with Heather Carson I know from previous experience to buy the entire series to begin with so you don’t waste time having to hunt the next book down as soon as that last page is turned!! Am in love with these characters and little Harper you are amazing!!

This one hit WAY too close to home and shocked me. I wish it came with a warning about the content :( I was rooting for Riley in the first book and connected with her the most because I suffered through DA with my EX and also had to run away. The feelings she went through struck my soul and there were times I cried. The worst part? My ex’s name was also Drew. So I was screaming, crying, rooting for Riley and when Lucan showed her such patience and love that was it for me like WHERE IS MY LUCAN?! 😩😩😩😂😂😂 Ugh, this was my favorite, even if I had to truck through some parts.

I like that this book started where the last one ended. Unfortunately, for Riley her dragon mate decided that the best way to get to know her was to kidnap her and take her back to his nest. then Riley‘s jerk of an ex tried to insert himself back into her life and hurt Riley in the process. Fortunately for him, he did get what he deserved at the end of this book. I will definitely read the next book in the series.

Out of the 3 part series this was my favorite. The main characters are a good balance for each other. However, he did kidnap her in the beginning. The way his home is described is beautiful. I can understand why they would enjoy being there full time. I also think the cat as a pet provides a bit of life to the picture.
I think they almost had more pressing concerns than you know falling in love with the whole earth falling apart thing but they don't stress those details on this one so much.

I was super excited to jump into book two as the end of book one left me happy with the couple happy for now ending but with so many questions about all the dragon and earth prophecy’s and such as well as needing to know what happened with Riley! I enjoyed Riley’s story alot as I already was familiar with what was going on in the world from book one and it picks up right where it ended. I loved that Riley made Lucan work for it and not just be a damsel who accepts her lot. I can’t wait to find out the ending in the next book!

Another great read from the wonderful Heather Carson.
I received this book as an ARC and was so excited for Riley and Lucan’s story. It was amazing and flowed perfectly from the first book and left you drooling for the 3rd.
Great story, great characters and so much more. Highly recommend this series. You will not be disappointed.

Give me the next book now
I loved the first one so much I had to get the second one. Again, this book was great, I do feel like these could have been a bit longer and not feel so rushed, however it fits with the time line of the story in what they are facing. I hate that I have to wait for the 3rd! I need to know the conclusion! Still nice and spicy as the first!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Riley has been kidnapped by her fated mate, the dragon Lucan. Riley has trust issues after being in an abusive relationship with her abusive ex. With time, she comes to trust Lucan and get closer to understanding the prophecy. I didn't read book 1 so some parts were a little confusing, so I advise you to start from book 1.

This was good little read, I'm not sure on the humor part of than the kidnapping but it was good none the less. I did enjoy the don't touch what's mine in each of these books. This one defintely had more of an enimies to love kind of vibe at the beginning but these girls were swept up almost from the begining.

Another hit out of the park. I loved this story. I love this world. I love the prophecy, the use of the environment, and the idea that dragons were there all along. Also, can I just say the hoard in the one had me laughing my butt off.
There is a warning in the beginning, as our main female character, Riley, has a traumatic background (Domestic abuse) - so if this is something that will bother you, be aware that it comes up (but isn't currently happening). SPOILERS - She does meet her abusive ex again, and as someone who has seen DV, it was hard. That said, the story itself is great, as is Riley's journey.
Lucan is also one sexy dragon, and the spice is great!

Romantic dragon story
I read the first two books of this trilogy in one night! Sadly I have to wait for the next one to come out. I promise you that once you start this trilogy you'll be hooked. This is an author I'll be watching. Definitely 5 stars...

Great characters and great story. The FMC is a bit of an idiot at one point (around 75%), but thankfully, it didn’t ruin her life in the story.
Also, the dragons have feathers? ….Hmmph. I don’t know why that bothered me so much, lol, but it DID and I refuse to imagine them as having feathers.

A fun read. a great fast paced book. I picked this book after being in a book hangover and it helped get me out I was hopeful because I loved the 1st book. I enjoyed Lucan and Riley's love story so much. I loved the growth of her character and the patience Lucan had for her.
