Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration.
He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended.
His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts.
In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.

This.... book has my sense of humor.

I read the rest of it online, but i bought a few books.

So, time for spoilers.

In the first chapter, I got something funny.

I recommend this book if you like toilet humor , suggestive themes or really like Toriyama's work :)

I have been absolutely blown away by Toriyama’s work in this first breakout hit, but also his impact on the world of pop culture and entertainment in general. I knew Dragonball was a big deal, and maybe Dragon Quest, but I just didn’t realize how great his early comedic work could be. Anyone who grew up on cynical cartoon comedies like The Simpsons and Animaniacs, in which the adults are all idiots and comedy fodder, this is just your game.

The dialogue-free chapter where Arale and Akane buy takoyaki is a total treat. Otherwise this is the same as the other volumes.

This was an entertaining volume that displayed Mr Toriyama's art stepping up and how he is not shy of experimenting with his story structure.

This was another fun volume with good, and somewhat funny and creative stories. Pretty good out of the box ideas and adaptations of existing stories!

It starts out with the world's worst way to make ice cream.

Chivil's older sister arrives. She wants to marry Dr. Slump. She thinks he's handsome. He turns her down and she sets her sights on Taro who turns her down, etc.

The next story deals with the serious situation where the town runs out of toilet paper. Senbei has to go to the store to get the toilet paper. Nothing is as simple as it sounds.

Senbei promises to take Arale and Gatchan to the amusement park. He also promises to go out on a date with Midori. So he makes a machine that makes a copy of himself. Things go wrong. Quickly.

The next story involves poop juggling. Yeppers. Poop juggling. Next story Senbei is worried about getting old. He makes a potion to make himself younger and he ends up a toddler. He gets to look up Midori's skirt and take a bath with her.

A group of beings arrive in a spaceship and decide to invade the Earth. Mobile Suit Rockcoach will lead the attack. Arale takes care of that, and Gatchan makes Senbei huge with one of his own inventions and he scares off the invaders.

The next story concerns ice cream and the end of the world. After that comes a story with the characters living in the stone age. After that it's Cinderella the Musical, which really doesn't work in a manga. It would in an anime cartoon, but doesn't work in book form.

Next is a story about a Japanese food called octopus balls. Then there's a story about Midori getting in an accident and Dr. Slump and the others helping her out and ending up in a bunch of alien poop. The final story is not very funny, actually.
