Jolanda will do whatever it takes, even face off against the Bering Sea, to raise the money for a balloon payment on her father's house. She challenges Keller and wins a bet to fill a deckhand slot vacated by her father on Keller’s recently inherited crab fishing boat. Unwilling to go back on his word, the young captain must buck tradition and superstition against women on fishing vessels.
Will his season be doomed or will he end up with the ultimate catch?
Constance Phillips lives in Ohio with her husband, daughter, and four canine kids. Her son, now on his own, is planning a wedding, reconfirming that romance still lives and breathes.
When not writing stories of finding and rediscovering love, Constance and her husband spend the hours planning a cross-country motorcycle trip for the not-so-distant future…if they can find a sidecar big enough for the pups.
Fairyproof and Resurrecting Harry are available now through Crescent Moon Press. The Novella sequel to Fairyproof, Council Courtship is also now available. Her first Contemporary Romance, All That's Unspoken, will be available from Turquoise Morning Press December 15, 2013 and The Ultimate Catch will be released in 2014 from Whiskey Creek Press.
Overall - 4 stars Romance visits a fishing boat on “Deadliest Catch” where love is interrupted by family emergencies and brutal weather.
Fantasy World - 5 So real it made me want to break out the parka and mittens.
Tingle - 2 Not even a kiss until 74% then from kiss to condoms in a few pages. More tender/romantic than hot.
Characters - 5 Jolanda is authentic as a girl tough enough to work a fishing boat. More heroines should be written like her! Keller is a real captain instead of a fantasy in a ruffled shirt. Love the rough and tumble crew; even the jerk, Pete.
Story Adventurous, realistic, and gripping. Romance isn't the primary storyline but rather a savory side dish.
Summary
“The Ultimate Catch” is a great book for many reasons, but the best one is it's actually a romance between adults. The characters don't act like children, and immature actions aren't major plot points. Applause, stomping, hooting, and hollering for Constance Phillips! These people have grown up under harsh conditions, and they understand fully the risks associated with their actions. I love reading about a heroine who knew what she was getting into, and toughed it out even when the going got insane. The captain, Keller, is no less masculine for supporting Jolanda instead of rescuing her. Sometimes it's actually harder to watch someone else suffer through something than it is to step in yourself. Go Keller!
I kept picturing Ariel Tweto from “Flying Wild Alaska” as I read about Jolanda. Ariel is a beautiful, tiny girl who loads freight into airplanes for a living. Despite her diminutive stature, she is all kinds of tough. If you enjoy, “The Ultimate Catch”, then check out “Flying Wild Alaska” too. I look forward to enjoying more great adventures and heroines from Contstance Phillips.

“Are you sure you want to do this?”
“I'm positive. I'm not a white knight kind-of-girl.”
In Constance Phillips’ newest release, The Ultimate Catch, the characters and the setting drive the story. Jo, whose obsessive determination and angry tongue land her in more trouble than she can handle, wins a job on a crab boat in Alaska, by drinking its captain under the table. Keller’s not only Jo’s boss, he’s the captain of the crab boat and she’s not very good at taking orders. He was born to live the life of a fisherman even though it’s destroying him emotionally and ruining his chances with Jo. “Last night he’d tried to write off his new-found attraction as an hallucination of closing time, but in the harsh light and even with a hangover, he was still seeing her in a new, softer light.” Now that’s contemporary romance. That’s the way some men think about women, whether we like it or not. Pete, the sexist creep you love to hate keeps baiting Jo, but when she takes the bait, he’s not ready for the consequences. Even though Jo’s petite, she’s more piranha than minnow. Jo’s best friend and another fisherman on Keller’s boat, Graham, always has her back. Jo’s father’s always talking about how he wants Graham and her to end up together. Will Graham stay in the friend zone? Or become something more? Ms. Phillips has thrown this cast together into a setting that’s custom built for drama. Treacherous icy waves slap over the slippery decks of their ship and impending storms add up to a job where danger and death constantly lurk just below the surface and sometimes right out in the open. “She slipped on her rain gear and then took one of the cups from Graham. A single sip was all she managed to take before he pushed open the door, and she got her first look at the Bering Sea in all its venomous glory.” “Graham walked out onto the deck. ‘She’s a cold, heartless bitch and you haven’t seen nothing yet.’” “As if to accent his words a huge swell crashed over the deck, spraying them.” Yes, Constance Phillips can write. Dialogue, description, but best of all action. Her dynamic prose makes you feel like you’re right in the driver’s seat, or more appropriately, the wheelhouse.

Jolanda’s mother thought her father was taking advantage of her. She didn’t want her eldest daughter throwing college and a normal life away to be stuck in some little fishing village. Truth be told, that was just Jo. She likes taking care of the people she loves…even when it forces her to drink her way onto a fishing boat. But when you need money fast you do what you need to do.
“I’m not a white knight kind-of-girl. You’re the first guy who’s gotten that about me.”
Fishermen have legends about having women on their boats, but a bet is a bet and when Keller, a man of his word, lost the drinking challenge to Jo he had to let her be part of his crew. Much to his surprise she steps up and does a damn good job, which only serves to further fan the flames he felt for her that first night in the bar.
“The only arm he wanted draped over her shoulder was his own. Seeing Graham in the place he coveted sent his mind spinning.”
I enjoyed the tension between the crew. With Pete always harassing her, and Graham usually standing up for her, it put them at odds with each other, but all it takes is one event to help bond them together. Everyone has to earn the respect of the crew, it’s never just given.
“This boat needs a fifth deckhand, and as far as I’m concerned that’s you this season. I know your dad’s not doing well and you want to be with him, but we need you too.”
The Ultimate Catch isn’t only about fishing and the connection between the crew of the Sydney; it’s about the perfect catch, the one only a few are ever lucky enough to find. For Keller that’s Jo.
This is a story about hard work, determination, family, and letting someone in even when you’re sure they’ll someday break your heart.
My Favorite Laughable Moment: A feisty Jo was always fun to read. I can’t believe she would attack someone way bigger than her. Watch out that girl has a temper!
My Favorite Moment: The drinking challenge. It was funny when she talked herself out of puking. “Stay down. Stay down.”
Constance Phillips has done it again, delivering another sweet and sexy romance that kept me up all night reading and rooting for that happily ever.
For Jolanda Gilles, family comes first. When her mother left Alaska with a teenage Jo in tow, she vowed never to let her dad down the way her mom did. She also made a promise to herself to never get romantically involved with a fisherman.
But bills from her father's diabetes treatment have started piling up and the balloon payment on his mortgage is also due. Working two jobs isn't quite enough to cover it. Jo makes a crazy bet with her dad's former boss, the handsome boat captain Keller Sveinsson. If she can out-drink him, he’ll allow her to take her dad's place in his crew. Winter crab fishing is cold and dangerous, but highly lucrative. Jo is sure she can make enough money in just a few trips out to pay off all of her father's debt.
Keller has his own family demons. He walked away from the winter season two weeks before his own father's fateful heart attack out at sea. When he returned to take over the family business, his fiancé left him. Now his brother (and partner) has walked away from the season to care for his wife, who's having complications with the birth of their first child.
The last thing Keller needs is feisty Jo joining his crew, but a bet is a bet and he gave his word. And he can't seem to keep his thoughts from turning to the petite ball of energy who pushed her way into the forefront of his life.
Constance Phillips once again shows her mastery of sweet and sexy romance with a tale that weaves real-life danger together with the dangers of the heart. Jo and Keller both need to let go of their fears and past regrets to embrace the possibilities of love. I loved this book, reading it straight through one dark and stormy summer night, and totally recommend this sensual romance.
I loved this book for it's romance... but I loved it even more for it's story of family strength; of putting family first. I think that's what I liked the most about Jo and Keller... they're both so caught up in taking care of their families. Jo not wanting her ailing father to lose their home. Keller not wanting his family to lose their business. Their priorities make them perfect for each other... and horrible for the idea of any chance of building a romance. I love this about Constance Phillips books. The struggle of finding love while keeping and reorganizing priorities... it seems to always work in building her stories. Her characters always have such full stories.
I have to say I loved that Jo was such a bad-ass. The picture on the cover is perfectly Jolanda. Pretty, cute, petite, girly. But she wins that spot on Keller's crabbing boat and she is forces herself to be as strong and determined in a ridiculously demanding job as the 4 men she's working with. I don't think... no, I know I couldn't have handled the work that Jo was doing. I've seen some of those fishing company shows. It is hard. It really pushed home how important it was to Jo that she do whatever she could to help her dad.
When Jo wins a bet to work on a crabbing boat for the season. She figured it was a good way to make money needed for her dads medical bills. Except Jo doesn't like to follow orders. Keller the captain of the boat never figured Jo would win the bet. Now he has no choice but to let her take her fathers place for the season. When Keller finds himself attracted to Jo, his job might be the one thing that keeps him from having her.
Wonderful cast of characters. I loved Jo, she was smart, feisty and had no problem making herself seem bigger then her petite self. Family comes first with her. Taking care of her father is her number one priority. Keller feels guilt over the loss of his father. As much as he wants to rescue Jo, he lets her do her job and fight through on her own. The crew all blend nicely with different personalities. Graham, Jo's best friend will do anything for her and always has her back. Pete never seems to let up on her. Over all a great read. The attraction is there almost from the beginning but isn't acted on until late in the book. I received an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review
*I received this book free in exchange for an honest review* This book is like Deadliest Catch finds love! I rather enjoyed the fishing part. Jo is a strong character. She does what it takes to help her family and it's admirable. I appreciate how even though it was rough going, Jolanda stuck to her guns. Keller is a real man. He keeps his word, no matter what back lash is coming from his crew. This is an exciting story of love, hardship and fishing! I've never wanted to visit Alaska more than now. You get an insight into how it really is to live there, the hardship of making a living, and not some glamorized version of it! I think this was a wonderful romance!
First of I enjoyed this very much. Jolanda was a strong female lead. I liked her right from the beginning. Her devotion to her dad was admirable almost to a fault.
Keller was strong but a troubled family guy. His guilt over loosing his father and trusting the wrong woman made you root for him right from the get go. It made him quite the catch himself.
Just like the ocean the story is set on, their relationship is rocky. It was almost over before it started. The story is rich in detail, so much that I could almost feel the bitter cold as much as the heat from their budding relationship.
Jo makes a bet to win a job on a crab boat Keller the captain knows he needs another deckhand. Will Keller make the right decision? Proving she can do the dangerous work leaves Keller to struggle to keep her safe or will it cost him the ultimate catch? Great book loved how it makes you feel like you're on the boat with them very descriptive . First book I've read by this author will read more!
I just loved this story so much! What a great way to start by having a drinking bet to secure her working on the boat to save her family home! Got this book being 200 pages it really was a joy to read about crab fishing which I knew nothing about ! Love how Constance ALWAYS delivers when it comes to real authentic family illness & emotions! Jo & Keller had great chemistry & enjoyed how it all worked out in the end ... Fantastic epilogue. Well written enjoyed book!

Constance Phillips' "The Ultimate Catch" is a standalone romance. It's a sweet story. I like the characters. I like the competition at the beginning. I think the details about the extreme fishing are great and really add to the story. Seems like the author really knows the ins and outs of crabbing. I will definitely read more by Constance Phillips.

>My favorite TV show is "Deadliest Catch". This story takes place on a fishing boat during King Crab season, just like the TV show. The whole atmosphere was so easy to see and feel. Jo needs to take her ailing father's place on the fishing boat in order to make their mortgage. She is fighting an attraction to her captain, Keller, and prejudice from the crew.
>The best part of this story wasn't the romance, but the description of Jo's experience on the boat. The romance was sweet, but the attraction went from nothing to the bedroom way too fast. Keller had some major guilt to get over. He is a fisherman who feels the pain of missing his family.
>The issue I have with this book was the ending. I wanted a lot more before the Epilogue. I felt as if the book just ended, skipping a lot of the good stuff. How does Keller and Jo handle a long distance relationship? How does Jo help Keller's business? The epilogue was sweet, but too much was glossed over.
>I am a reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors that Rock. This book is for an adult audience.
Jolanda is ready to do anything it takes to raise the money for a balloon payment on her father’s house. She challenges Keller and wins a bet to get on the recently inherited crab fishing boat, forcing the young captain to say screw tradition and superstition. Will he be able to get his seasons catch or be doomed? Or will he end up with something even better? Cute contemporary romance. Very outgoing young girl helping save her family home and have a little romance. Defiantly a great read. Keller is the true son who always was meant to follow in line with the family business but when he lost that bet he had to do something most fisherman don’t do, let a woman on board and have her help out. So cute and pride be screwed, no mumbo jumbo! Reviewer for paranormal romance and authors that rock
With Jolanda's father sick this year and their house about to foreclose, Jo is willing to do whatever it takes to get the money they need to save their house, even if it means fishing out in the Bering Sea. She convinces the captain, Keller, to a drinking contest, if she can outdrink him, then the spot is hers. Keller figures this is a good bet because what woman could outdrink him? Little does he know, Jo can, and she earns a place on his crew. But will the superstitions of a woman on board ultimately be the downfall of how much crab the crew will bring in this year? With Keller hoping to have an excellent season this year, will he find the ultimate catch?
