The Farmer Has a Wife

Rate this book
She needed a husband. She got a wife… and a whole lot of feelings.

Eleanor Brewster is a proper English lady with a crumbling manor to prove it, and one inconvenient problem: she needs to marry to keep her family estate.

Danni Franks is a no-nonsense farmer with a newly acquired (and deeply in debt) farm, a complicated family, and precisely zero interest in aristocratic drama.

But when Danni’s tractor collides, literally, with Eleanor’s sports car, she somehow ends up engaged to a woman who considers tweed a fashion statement.

A fake marriage should solve both their problems: Eleanor keeps her home, Danni gets some much-needed stability, and neither of them has to worry about pesky things like romance. Easy, right?

Except Eleanor is alarmingly good at making Danni’s heart race, and Danni is impossibly attractive in flannel. Throw in a scheming investor, a meddling best friend, and a horse with far too many opinions, and their arrangement might just turn into the love story neither of them saw coming.

The Farmer Has a Wife is a grumpy-sunshine, opposites-attract, lesbian marriage of convenience romance, featuring a very happy ending, from bestselling Sapphic writer Sienna Waters, author of The Wrong Date, Crossing the Pond, and Teaching Hope.

One of the best fake marriage books I’ve read in a long time. Two very mismatched MC achieve what they set out to achieve and then find playing house isn’t a game anymore. Add some nefarious goings-on, some quirky side characters, as our MCs take winding roads to reach their HEA. Lovely. And to top it off, it’s hilarious.

I received an ARC copy of this book and I’m leaving a genuine review.

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of Sienna Waters and her feel-good British romcoms. Her latest novel, The Farmer Has a Wife, does not disappoint. It's a funny, sweet, and spicy sapphic love story featuring lovable main characters, a quirky supporting cast, and of course, a few cute animals to boot.
Eleanor, the Lady of Brewster Manor, and Danni, a local farmer, quite literally run into one another. An outdated inheritance clause requires Eleanor to marry before claiming her family estate, while Danni needs financial stability to keep her little farm afloat. Some snarky banter and bickering later, they find themselves in a marriage of convenience. Despite their opposite personalities, upbringing, and socioeconomic status, something real begins to grow between them.
Both main characters are likable and fun together. The found family, as always in Sienna Waters' novels, has an important role to play. They are entertaining and full of wisdom for our love interests.
There is a lot of chemistry, and the spicy scene caught me off guard, in a good way. *fans self*
I read this book in one sitting, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This one is my new favorite by Waters. I recommend this author when you need to feel warm and fuzzy. She provides a soft place to land when reality just won't do.

Good fun, lovely story following all the les-rom rules which is comforting. I love the way everything falls into place. She’s a safe read, Sienna, and I love that.

I had such a blast reading this book and had some real laugh out loud moments and sitting with a smile on my face.
The antics Danni and Eleanor get up to is just so quirky and funny. With Elizabeth and her dry humor also giving the story a real feel.
Absolutely loved this book and finished it within a day, that pesky thing called word hindered me a bit to complete it sooner.

Eleanor is Lady of the Manor - she is the last direct descendant in the Brewster line. But because of typical Victorian misogyny, for her to inherit, she has to be married.
Danni runs a small failing farm in the same English village. She doesn’t know where the next money is coming from to pay the bills.
Both of these women are receiving letters trying to buy their land. Eleanor can’t sell (and doesn’t want to anyway), because until she is married the estate isn’t hers to sell. Danni won’t sell - she is making a point to herself and her mother and brother - she is NOT a failure.
A typical fake marriage trope, but with an undertone of very British comedy moments.
Not always very realistic, especially the flurry to sign documents at the end with no idea of the land she is buying and if it would be suitable. But overall a lovely warm and romantic easy-read story which is funny in places.

Fake dating/marriage is a classic trope which I happen to enjoy reading. I've read books from this author before so I knew it would be a well written book and I wasn't disappointed.

The story itself is nice and fluffy, with a bit of angst because you can't not have it in the story. I always like the wise-cracking grandmother characters too.

Sienna Waters gives us a charming marriage of convenience romance in The Farmer Has a Wife, set in a small English town. After our two different-as-can-be heroines run into each other (literally), they discover that each has a problem that the other can solve: Lady Eleanor Brewster can't claim her inheritance unless she gets married, and farmer Danni Franks stands to lose her new farm unless she can get funds to pay off the associated debts.

I do love a good fake marriage/marriage of convenience trope, and I really like that the two are very open with their close friends and family about exactly what they're doing--or, you know, what they're planning on doing. The banter between the two is a lot of fun, and they're both quite likeable. Of course, as it always happens in these types of romance, the two discover that the other is much more complex than they originally thought and they start to fall for real.

The plot was enjoyable and clear, had enough drama to keep the story moving but not so much that it got bogged down, and we got a bit of spice to boot. I enjoyed all the side characters, especially Eleanor's grandmother, she was fabulous. Definitely a fun and worthwhile read!

3.5 rounded up. Very enjoyable. The miscommunication/non-communication was a touch irritating but it was resolved fairly quickly.

Superb

This book was so good. I literally read it straight through losing sleep. This is a must-read.
Is it predictable yes, does that matter no. All because it's a darn good story. It has love, humor, and spice (🌶🌶).

The 'Farmer has a wife' was a humorous and well written book.

I love the fake marriage trope, and Sienna Waters really excelled with this romance.

Danni the farmer has a fabulous personality, she is funny, sexy and so so likeable.

Eleanor is reserved, in control and very proper. When these opposites meet, sparks ignite.

Faking it to save two dreams and finding unexpected connections along the way.

With her estate house crumbling around her and a marriage clause preventing her from inheriting her own home, Eleanor Brewster is nothing short of desperate. So when she literally crashes into local farmer Danni Franks, it's almost like the last straw. And Danni would agree. She's struggling to keep her little farm afloat, and with her ancient tractor finally giving up and another anonymous investor offer on her property, she's close to finally admitting defeat. But then she literally crashes into Eleanor and another idea strikes the duo - a marriage of convenience. Eleanor gets to legally inherit her home, allowing her to more easily sign-off on all the renovations to bring the property back to its glory, and Danni will have the money to get her farm in working order. The pair couldn't be more opposite if they tried, and their initial opinions of one another don't help with their bonding, but with Eleanor living with Danni while her house is repaired, it was only a matter of time before sparks began to fly and very real feelings start to invade this fake arrangement.

Went on the hunt for some sapphic yeehaw books, and found a super sweet BRITISH small town, opposites attract sapphic romance that definitely hit the spot! Having never read anything by Sienna before, I didn't really know what to expect, but could easily see why she is such a beloved sapphic romance author, and I'll definitely be diving into more of her work in the future. She really captured everything to love about the opposites attract and forced proximity of the marriage-of-convenience trope.

Eleanor and Danni had an interesting relationship, and they were grumpy x sunshine personified, which made for a really nice dynamic as their relationship is explored throughout the book. For small-town life, it's a little surprising they hadn't crossed paths before now, but then that lack of contact also plays into the class differences between the pair, and how their relationship is about different worlds colliding, not just different personalities and ages.

Speaking of ages, both characters mention several times that there is an age gap between them, and that is something that both consider (or are suggested to consider by friends) before pursuing an actual relationship. But there was never any actual mention of their respective ages, so it was hard to connect with the age gap being an issue when they were written to seem relatively close in age to begin with…

I did have a little trouble connecting with both characters individually and as a couple, although I can't quiet put my finger on why - Sienna's writing flowed beautifully, and overall the story and relationship was enjoyable to read, but there were elements that I couldn't totally gel with, or that took me a while to get on board with. The miscommunication probably didn't help either, but that's always a tricky trope to play-off well anyway.

There were some fun secondary characters, especially Eleanor's grandmother Elizabeth, who had such a great dry sense of humour and it's really a shame we didn't see more of her because she was a riot. There was also a really interesting secondary storyline that kept chugging along and provided a bit of conflict for our fake couple, and I kind of wish we got to see more of it in the forefront as it was kind of wrapped up fairly easily, all things considering.

If you're looking for a quick sapphic read and can't get enough of the fake marriage trope, this is certainly one to have on your TBR, and it'll have you keen to get lost in the British countryside to find your own Lady of the Manor in need of a marriage-of-convenience!

Honestly for me this is probably more like a 2.5 than a 2. I'm almost tempted to just round it up to a 3, because in some ways it's a perfectly fine romance book, but at the end of the day I truly just did not enjoy it. The author did a good job of making Eleanor come off hoity toity, but unfortunately that just resulted in me disliking her, and I never really came around to her. I felt alright about Danni, but I never felt particularly enamored by her character. I felt like the writing was perhaps a bit stiff; I never felt engaged by it. I didn't really feel the chemistry between the leads. At one point somebody mentions that they're two attractive women living in close proximity, of course they'd have some thoughts, and for me I was like "That's kind of all it feels like". And then the latter portion of the book felt just frustrating to me. . Honestly, reading it, I was just like... this is dumb. At around the 60% mark I checked to see how much I had left, and was left kind of dreading the fact that I had another 100 pages to go.

I think there are a lot of classic romance elements in the story. But, for me, the characters and their subsequent romance were both a miss.

4 stars. I love a marriage of convenience so I was excited to get to this one. It was really good. I liked the plot, Danni and Eleanor were both likable characters and I loved their opposites attract romance. They have great chemistry and I loved the banter between them. Very sharp and snippy which was fun. The two meet when Danni’s tractor collides with Eleanor’s fancy car. Eleanor is a Lady and needs to get married to inherit her home and Danni needs the money. I thought all of that was great and I was having a really good time.

Then we got to the third act break up and the story lost all of its momentum. I really didn’t like it. Eleanor was so frustratingly cold and cruel that I couldn’t get back on her side in the end. Danni didn’t deserve any of that. The ending was…fine. It’s an HEA I just wish the third act drama had been handled differently. It kinda ruined it a bit for me. Overall, before that this was a great read.

This was a nice book, but not much more in my opinion.

The glaring issue for me, though I'm not sure if it was an issue with the book itself or just the ebook, was that it desperately needed another round or two of basic editing/proofreading. While there were some bits with sentences that didn't really flow or disjointed parts, I'm more talking about just basic typos and grammatical errors, which do unfortunately take me out of a book when I'm reading.

I don't think there was a whole lot of chemistry for how hard the characters fell for each other. I did enjoy this book, I don't mean to sound unkind or like I hated it, I just struggled to really care about the characters or plot points very much. This was, for me, more of a passing-the-time read than an emotional response or attachment read.

Eleanor is struggling to maintain the family home, Brewster Manor. Complicating matters she can't claim ownership unless she's married. Luckily it doesn't say who she has to marry, so as a lesbian, there's that.

Danni Franks is also struggling, in her case with her farm. She's determined, but everything that can go wrong, is going wrong. Including Eleanor crashing her car into her tractor.

When Danni hears about the wedding requirement, she suggests they make a agreement to marry, so Eleanor gets the house and she gets financing for the farm.

(I'm amused that everyone is pretty much telling both this'll turn out more complicated than expected.)

Then repairs on the manor make it uninhabitable, and Eleanor has to move onto the farm with her...
Good solid fun.

Lady Eleanor needs a wife to inherit the family mansion house and Danni needs money to keep her farm afloat.
Entering into a fake marriage gives them both what they need but of course pesky feelings start to appear as they get to know each other properly.
Sienna’s humour is right on my wavelength and I chuckled my way through this book as I do most of the others.
The supporting characters add even more humour and all had unique voices.
This book is so good it’s pushed its way into my top 10 (or am I now at 15?) books by Sienna.

Lady Eleanor Brewster's manor is in disrepair and needs to marry to keep her family estate. Danni Franks is a farmer with a new farm and debt who has no time for the upper class.
They meet when Danni’s tractor collides with Eleanor’s sports car. After both continue to refuse to pay for the other's repairs Eleanor suggests a marriage of convience. She gets to keep the family estate and Danni gets to keep her farm.
I like the grumpy straightforward character paired with the no nonsense character. This is a HEA with some angst.

Well, that was unexpected.

After an accident between a MG and a tractor, what agreement will their owners come to.

Danni is working hard on her farm getting it to prosper, but it isn't easy to accomplish. And she feels like her mom doesn't support her choices at all.

Eleanor has lived at the Manor her whole life, and has been running the estate after her grandma went into a care facility. To fully take over the estate and get repairs done she has some stipulations that she has to follow for the trust.

She has to get married. What could go wrong you ask?

With all their issues they have a HEA.

This book is perfect for someone who is looking for a sweet romance with a lot of charm. I especially loved the character of Danni, who was a grumpy farmer and over the course of the novel you were able to see her grumpiness transform to charm. I really enjoyed the playful banter between the two MCs. I especially loved how they seemed to push each other up while also holding each other accountable.

This was one I couldn't put down and ended up reading it entirely in one day.

Another well written story from SW. It’s slightly different from usual fake marriage trope by being more a marriage of convenience. I liked that they weren’t deceiving their friends and family about it. Both main characters were clearly defined and consistent. I thought Grandmama was lovely too.
It’s a good easy and fun read that I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend.

A real marriage

This was a great story and reminded me of stories that I heard years ago. Danielle has a farm that she bought herself and there’s going broke. Eleanor has a mansion that she is fixing up herself. I found the plot of the story very interesting and the character very great. His story involves love and sacrifice that both Danielle and Eleanor are willing to make for love. I recommend this book for all who like a good love story.

Clever, with so many wonderful moments!

Sienna Waters is a master of the love story genre. This one was a twisting monster to bring to a HEA but a good storyteller is able to bring it all together in the end. The characters are well written and essential, the setting perfect. I actually had tears in my eyes at one point, then a big smile a moment later. This one is worth the read for sure.

Awesome Sauce

I actually loved this book. Such a nice find on KU. Witty - sometimes comical - with a suspenseful subplot, woven gently into the romance. I was always on the verge of figuring out what was coming, but never able to quite grasp it before it was revealed, and there was always a slight, and better, difference than what I had in mind. Had to give this one 5 stars with a smile.

Boring. Clunky. Repetitive. Underwhelming. Meh.

Was a fun time until we got to 50% and I was honestly just desperate to finish the book cause I refuse to DNF for whatever reason. It’s not terrible, it’s just alright. Previously unmentioned (completely unspecified) age gap that suddenly became all important, ‘for the plot’ lack of thinking and consideration for their mutual issue (that I won’t disclose cause I don’t want to use a spoiler tag😭).

I did not have a good time.

The Farmer Has a Wife was a warm, heartfelt romance set in a charming rural town. The story beautifully captures love, commitment, and everyday life, with relatable characters and a slow-burning connection that feels authentic. A cozy, feel-good read for anyone who enjoys tender contemporary romance. I truly enjoyed both characters and their authenticity. This is a must read. It was ok until 68%, where it became a miscommunication trope feast.
And the author knew it was weak because—double whammy—she also hid what the two MCs were doing from the reader. The MCs wouldn't talk to each other AND the MCs wouldn't "talk" to the reader. This left me as an outsider looking in on two people being unnecessarily difficult, rather than an active participant in their journey.
It was so frustrating that I hesitated to give it just one star, but I reserve those for toxic books.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Eleanor needs to marry to keep her family’s estate as the house is falling down. Danni is a farmer and when her tractor hits Eleanor’s car they somehow end up engaged. This is a fake marriage that could solve both their problems, but what happens if they fall in love. This is a lovely story, well written and a great ending.

I wish this book was much longer so they could’ve had more fluff as a couple. I did quite enjoy the ending of this book though in comparison to some other books I’ve read lately! Lastly, this book embodied one of my pet peeves in books which miscommunication and lack thereof. Oh and great Masc representation! Anyway, good book.
