This is book one of the Winged Warriors series and the main characters are Falkor, dragon shifter and alpha of the Phantom Fire, a group of twelve immortals created by a god to protect the world, and Kessily Campbell, an environmental lawyer who is fighting cases against those who would seek to make money by destroying pristine wilderness. Falkor is the last of the original twelve warriors, as all the others found their eternal flame, their fated mate, and gave up their immortality to live a mortal life. The first born son of that couple would then take the place of their father as the next immortal warrior, when they came of age. Falkor has always been about his duty and thought after so many millennia, that his turn would never come. The two meet at a conference the Sierra Club were holding and she asks him to her room, wanting a bit of fun and distraction after working so hard she has no time for a relationship. Falkor should only have been able to have a child with a drakaina and he sensed Kessily was fully human, but somehow she became pregnant. All she knows is his first name and nothing else, so she doubts she will see him again, once she figures out she is pregnant, just as she is about to take on a huge case in the wind River Mountains.
So she is completely shocked when she enters a meeting with the new client, to see Falkor there as part of the team. Her mother had told her she should tell the father of the baby about it, whether she wanted him to be part of the baby’s life or not. But she never really thought she would see him again, even if she can’t forget the night they spent together! Unfortunately, the news of her pregnancy is revealed to him, before she can decide how to break it to him and he is unsure who the father is, adamant he can’t be as she is human. That doesn’t go down well and he says things that annoy her immensely and have her kicking him out! He leaves her to be with the father of her baby, not wanting to step on another man’s right to her, but he has made a huge mistake and will not find it easy to get back to her good side! The person trying to build on land near the Wind Rivers Mountain is another dragon shifter, one who Falkor has already run into in the past and one that won’t stop ruining the land all in the pursuit of power and money. Since Falkor is no longer welcome around Kessily, he has his trusted friend Sobek and a new recruit Nadon, to keep an eye on her safety, something he had been doing himself, even before he found out she was pregnant. He had always thought he wouldn’t find his eternal flame, but has to finally admit that Kessily is his and he needs to claim her before she allows another man into her life.
As the court case hots up with Kessily up against a big time lawyer on the other side, her research comes up with the perfect information to put a stop to the illegal construction work. The opposing lawyer knows she has won, but his client definitely isn’t happy about it. She has also heard that the company are going ahead with construction in secret at night and she wants to check it out and get some evidence. So of course she goes off on her own, managing to dump Sobek by going through a back door! This places her in danger and gives her a first glimpse of real life dragons, as three of them fly down to attack her! She soon gets to find out the truth of Falkor and who he is, as he comes to save her. But she has made herself a target for this other dragon shifter and his crew, stopping him from getting ahead with his plans, and he won’t take it lightly! Falkor feels a responsibility to the warriors, but also to Kessily and the baby he finally acknowledges is his own. He has a lot to make up for and it is not something he is used to doing, but they can’t really stay apart, the chemistry between them is off the charts. Changes are coming for the immortal warrior and even the Phantom Fire themselves as modern times call for them and they can’t afford to lose Falkor’s millennia of experience. A nice HEA ending with Falkor and his eternal flame Kessily coming together and getting over their misunderstanding to be closer than ever, as he introduces her to his world. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series, with a nice hint of the next pairing ad how they meet. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
