Alice Worth survived a kidnapping and said yes to a very important question. But before she and alpha werewolf Sean Maclin have a chance to celebrate, the fallout from a coup at the Vampire Court and the attack on her pack lands right on her doorstep. The Court's new leader threatens to destroy everything Alice has worked to build.
As Alice fights to protect herself and those around her, she and her ghost sidekick Malcolm reluctantly take the case of a man who claims he committed murder while controlled by a supernatural force. Though initially skeptical, they soon find evidence that supports his claim. The entity's murderous spree forces Alice and her allies to hunt it down while dealing with Alice's strange, vivid nightmares and mysterious attacks by followers of a black magic practitioner.
It's a hell of a to-do hunt a supernatural serial killer, keep herself and those she loves alive and out of prison, forge new alliances, and face a threat unlike any she has ever encountered. Betrayals, deadly traps, and black magic will send Alice to the deepest pits of Hell . . . and force her to choose between justice for the living and the rising power of the damned.

Gosh, I love this series!! When I first began the series, I wasn’t sure about Alice, who seemed like such a harsh main character. But man! Ms. Edmonds so expertly unraveled and developed, not only Alice, but each character, as the stories unfold that this has become one of my all-time favorite UF series! And book nine continues to awe and amaze with all the new and unique twists and turns!
This story would have rated an absolute five stars if not for that one glaring glitch about 75% in where the usually very smart and savvy Alice, who catches every trap laid for her, suddenly (and stupidly) raced into one that was so obvious, the author should have just screamed “HERE IS THE BIG TRAP THAT WILL SET OFF THE CLIMAX!!” In bright red letters. Everything else in the entire book is pitch perfect, yummy, exciting UF at its very best!
Received my ARC and immediately started reading it. Loved it, this is one of those series which I re-read a lot and coincidently just finished reading it last week so it was even more fun for me to get the ARC yesterday :) Ever since I read the last one, I was waiting for the next one and now I have read it and let me tell you, it was great. I liked the pace, the storyline, addition of new characters, I like reading about those moments with Alice when she is just sitting on her deck drinking coffee and taking it all in, reflecting on what her life has become. The only problem with this is now I have to wait again for the next one :) It's a vicious cycle folks :D
I liked it, but I had a really hard time keeping my attention on it. I think that was partially because before things got cranking (probably around the 40% mark), I was floundering around trying to remember the people and previous story. It's been more than 3 years since the last book with Alice and Sean, and I think it all fell entirely out of my head. I was shocked she was meeting her grandfather for dinner - I don't know how they came to a detente, the only thing I could remember was what a murderous bag of torturing shit he was. I didn't remember who Matthias was. I didn't remember when Arkady and she became partners. I didn't recall all the details of Charles betraying her. I remember Valas dying, but I don't remember a whole lot about the situation. I don't remember why the Wolf Council doesn't like her, aside from them being bigoted douchebags (maybe that is the only reason, who knows?).
At probably the 25% mark, I thought I should put this down and do a re-read, and then come back to it. But I was just kind of like meh, let's just get through it.
Alice has always had some martyr / TSTL characteristics that annoyed me, and while she's largely grown past that (though, really, if this book reminded us that Alice hasn't eaten all day! gasp! one more time I was going to chuck it. It was constant, like EVERY DAY, so I'm pretty sure Alice didn't eat for the entire 4-5 days in which this book took place, nor sleep, really), it still crops up. But I really didn't want to double-back to the beginning and deal with it being her regular way of operating.
Anyway, I liked it. I will probably give the series a re-read at some point because I really do like the characters.
It’s been about 6 months since I read the rest of the Alice Worth series and just starting this book made me clearly remember how much I loved it. Alice currently is having a good life, engaged to Sean, her father has just married Nan and everything seems to be going smoothly. Then things all go to hell. Alice and the pack are named in a lawsuit from the vampire court, she is hired to investigate a murder that has some strange aspects, she still has to have dinner with her grandfather and that’s just the beginning. There is a fair amount of action, mystery, humour, some romance, lots of great characters and interactions, danger and surprises. This is a quick, easy, well written read just like the rest of the series and I’m looking forward to many more.. Definitely high on my recommendation list. This review is for an ARC version, freely given.
Heart of the Damned was an immersive, amazing book, and you should definitely read it if you like werewolves, found family, and a main couple with a healthy relationship (at the very least, they support one another, no gaslighting, there is chemistry between them, and they genuinely love each other)!
This book had a lot going for it. It's part of an amazing series, the author's writing style is interesting (seriously, her style is really good), and the characters are very lovable.
Side note: I love Carly, Esme and Daisy!! Esme's antics were adorable and the way the author described Daisy was so cute, you can't help but fall in love with her, at least a little.
We start with Daniel and Nan's wedding, a pretty cute wedding. Everything is going well, at least on the surface. Though Matthias has problems fitting into the pack, but surely those will be resolved in time, and everything else is going great, so we can relax, right? Right? Wrong. A lawsuit comes in from the Vampire Court, and Moses suddenly wants family dinners in an attempt to be "allies". Our poor heroine just can't catch a break. In this enchanting book full of magic, mystery, and a bit of romance, follow Alice and Sean as they navigate their dangerous world!
Disclaimer: Though I received this book as an ARC, all opinions are my own
When I acquired this ARC, I knew it was going to be fantastic. Alice Worth has been Oops All Bangers, and book 9 is no exception.
I just spent the last 2 days devouring this book. Picking up a month after the events of Heart of the Pack, we are greeted with both joy and tension. My heart soared for a few characters, and my heart BROKE for a certain character that now has a special place in my heart.
This book took many turns I wasn't expecting and was DELIGHTEDLY ANGRY about. 😂 I spent 20 MINUTES ranting about the reveal at the end of chapter 2. Out of all of the ways a character could've made himself Alice's problem, I wasn't expecting what happened. Heart of the Damned was twisty and delightfully turn-y.
Another one of my favorite things was Sean's struggles with the situation. His wolf is riding him hard this book, especially in the wake of Alice being kidnapped. He's managing as best he can, but the reader can absolutely see him cracking a little. His stress and anger had my heart hurting for him, and made his happiness in the epilogue that much more satisfying.
I enjoyed this book immensely and am so excited for others who love the series to read it. Alice has come such a long way from Heart of Malice. I loved seeing her finally allow herself to lean on her support system. I also loved seeing her connect with others who have experienced similar things and act as a support to them.
This book was a 10/10 and a perfect high-stakes, spooky read for the season. Don't walk, RUN to buy this book on October 29.
An incredible journey. Lots to unpack. I have to say Alice’s fight scenes make ME hurt. The multiple power plays going on all around are intense. A really gripping tale
After the events at Northborne things are tense Charles is settling the Vampire Court after the coup, Moses wants regular "family dinners" in an attempt to be allies. The Vampire Court then seeds a lawsuit with all kinds of allegations and a demand for the return of newly changed Matthias. The new case Alice landed is the most dangerous case yet. A man brutally stabs a woman in broad daylight and has no memory of what occurred. They hired Alice to prove he is not responsible for the murder. The investigation turns up a trace of dark energy that appears to be from a malevolent powerful ghost. Alice must find the ghosts and more importantly the person holding the leash of the ghosts. I think this is one of the best Alice books so far.
I love this series. Alice Malcom and Sean are together fighting evil and standing up to all of the councils. Alice takes a case that even she doesn’t know if she can solve but with the help of her pack she does what she does best. Kicking butt and taking names.
After waiting since May 2023 for this audiobook, I was thrilled to return to Lisa Edmonds’ world. While I had forgotten some details, the book did a fantastic job jogging my memory, allowing me to settle right back into the story. Lisa Edmonds truly excels at weaving in reminders that help readers reconnect with the narrative.
What I found especially impressive was the character development. Alice’s growth, along with her relationships—like her bond with Malcolm and Sean—added depth and made the story even more compelling. I had forgotten how much I like Sean and I missed him.
Though the book was long, with parts that felt heavy in detail, the overall pacing and engaging plot helped balance it out. The narrator, as always, delivered an excellent performance, making the listening experience enjoyable despite occasional slow moments.
Ultimately, *Heart of the Damned* was worth the wait, with great storytelling, memorable characters, and strong narration. I am unsure as to whether this is going to be the last in the series, or if there will be more.
I truly appreciate receiving an ARC copy of this book.
I have enjoyed every book in the series, but with "Heart of the Damned," Lisa Edmonds has truly outdone herself. I read it the first time as soon as I received it. I finished it way too quickly because I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. Have you ever read a book that is so good that you can hardly believe it? This book caused me to do something that I have never done before; I read it a second time within a month. The introduction of each conflict and its resolution was as wonderful as I thought in my first reading. Most of all, I love the characters in this series. Each one is distinct and memorable. The growth of Alice's found family is a tapestry of relationships; none of which are exactly the same. Best of all, the characters and relationships change as individuals learn more about themselves and each other.
Coming into this latest story, I read the few books before this that I was behind in. Reading all of them, plus this one, reminded me just how much I love Alice and her whole family. In this latest title in the series, we see Alice struggling with the aspects of her life she thought she’d put behind her because she has “family” dinners she must attend. Add to that, Matthias is struggling to find his place in their pack, she’s investigating a murder where the murderer can’t remember the crime, and the cherry on the top of her crappy sundae is a lawsuit brought by Charles. As with all this author’s books, this is filled with wonderful writing, complex and engaging plots, and such heartwarming characters. I am hoping this series continues for a very long time. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

I received an arc copy of this book for a review. WOW, this is one great read. It has all the great stuff. Magic, shifters, bad guys, good guys, twists, and turns. It really has it all. I have read all the books in this series more than once and just can't get enough of team Alice. I would recommend this book to all those magic lovers out there. You will want to start with the first book in the series Heart of Malice. Lisa definitely has another winner. RB
I was very lucky to receive Heart of the Damned as an ARC. I’m enraptured with Alice’s stories, so to get it early made me so happy. Now engaged to Sean (sweet 🌶️🌶️ sauce 😉), things are going good with her dad, life’s going well ….. until it’s not. Vampire lawsuits, dark magic possession, murders, dinner with her grandfather, it’s all happening. Action, drama, romance, murder and mayhem, with time to sit on the deck with coffee and relax, the growth of Alice, and her relationships with Sean and Malcolm, I wish I could get you to understand how much I truly love this series.
Oh my, our Alice is growing up and evolving. I’m loving it!! She’s facing her fears and becoming so much more. This series keeps getting better with each book. Alice is battling a necromancer again and some surprising charges from the vampire court. Can’t get enough of Alice and the rest of her pack!!
Heart of the Damned starts off at Nan and Daniel's wedding. From there, things move quickly. The pack is served indictments issued by the Vampire Court/Charles for aiding Valas and demanding the return of their "property". The pack will never turn Matthias over to Charles; he's pack now. Meanwhile, Alice is hired to clear the name of a man accused of killing a woman. He did it, but he didn't do it. Possession? Alice and Malcolm, with Matthias tagging along, work with the pair to determine exact what happened, then set out to find who's responsible and a way to clear his name. To top it all off, Alice has agreed to have dinner with her grandfather, the one person in the world she despises above all else.
Alice Worth is a must read read! Seriously, pick it up and read it, you won't be sorry. The character and world development is wonderful. The characters are those you cannot help but fall in love with, cheer and sneer with and miss once each book has ended. I'm anxious for more of Matthias; what a great addition to the pack. Thankfully, there's more to come, including a new spin-off featuring Carly Reese, High Priestess of the Emerald Star coven.
Favorite quotes: “I’m lucky I’ve got reflexes like a coked-up cat or you’d be trying to reach me with a Ouija board.” Malcolm is, as always, an absolute riot!
If second-guessing myself were an Olympic sport, I’d have a dozen gold medals hanging around my neck. Oh, Alice, you're not alone there, girl!
This was the first time I've actually read Alice Worth book. Until now I've only listened the audiobooks but this being an ARC I had to skip the relisten of the series (I relisten every time a new book releases) and at first I had kind of hazy memory of what had happened before this book. I was so excited to continue the story and it all slowly came back to me. I was a bit flabbergasted that it has only been about a years time between the Heart of Malice and when the Heart of the Damned starts. It has been a hell of a year for Alice and the others!
Edmods keeps putting these characters through a wringer and keeps you on the edge of your seat with another fast phased, concoction of intrigue, mysterie, danger and twist without forgetting the tender loving moments and sarcastic relief. The roller coaster of emotions this book put me through was everything between laughter and tears, love and hate.
Now I'm just waiting for the audio with Felicity Munroe's excellent narration and I can relisten the whole series again 🥰 *audio was released in March of 2025*
sean is boring, Malmolm is 1D, so in Arkady. Im over the posturing with granpapi and his minions. The relaionship development with Daniel was lazy. How the hell has it been only 1 year since alice and Sean met??? Shes gotten over so much of her trauma, fallen deeply in love, joined the pack, nearly died 1 million times, moved in, gotten engaged, found her dad, married him off... all in 1 year??????
I have been waiting for this series to continue and this book did not disappoint!! After Alice was kidnapped by Valas and managed to kill both Vlad and Valas, things seem to be settling down. But for Alice, it never seems to last long. Served with papers from the Court, they are being charged as accomplices of Valas and the Court wants Matthias back. At the same time, Alice takes a job to investigate case for a high profile murder where the supernatural may be involved. The client swears he blacked out and has no memory of committing a murder. She will need to find and outsmart a necromancer using an evil spirit before the city is thrust into chaos. Add to that she still has to have "family dinner night" with Moses and Alice is run ragged, to say the least. I did not get a chance to go through and do any rereads before I started this book, but Lisa did a wonderful job of bringing up situations from previous books in a way that helps you remember what happened. And she does it often enough that it really helped me remember what had happened. It also was done in a way that doesn't interrupt the flow of the book. So if it has been a while and you are worried you won't be able to pick up where things left off, I'm confident that most people should be able to. Alice has definitely grown as a character since this series began. She is still the kicka$$ female, but she is learning to take help and to let others besides Sean in. She is definitely more than the fight first, question later she was in the beginning. And she is using everything she las learned to deal with Charles and Moses. We get more Malcom in all his hilarious sidekick glory as well. I love Malcom and how well he compliments Alice. Not as well as Sean does though! Even when his wolf is ready to come out and tear the world apart, Sean manages to control it and let Alice do her thing. And we get a lot of time learning about Matthias. After being an "employee" of the court so long, he has no idea what to do when left to make his own decisions. With this new power brewing inside him, will he be able to find his place in the pack? Will he really be able to leave the Court and their contract behind? There is so much going on in this book! Even though its a longer book, you will not be bored. The world building is wonderful and the book just flows right along. Whether Alice is having a major magic battle or a battle of wits, there is never a dull moment. There are twists and turns around every corner. When you (or Alice) thinks she is starting to figure things out, another curve ball is thrown at you! I enjoyed this book and I am excited Alice is back!
Heart of the Damned just keeps the punches coming as Alice tries to solve a case where the victims claim to be possess while committing horrific acts of violence. This book is dark gripping and oh so satisfying! Alice has made huge stride and is finally exploring life on her terms. Alice and Sean have settled into their new house and Alice is learning to grow as a part of the pack. However, she still has a few looming concerns. On the heel of Charles betrayal looms a dire prophecy and the knowledge that the sorcerers dark magic is killing her. Before Alice can decide what to do about her personal quandaries Valas calls in her favor asking Alice to travel through a mirror to hunt a stolen artifact and the vampire thief who stole it. Alice and Malcolm travel to realms beyond imagination filled with both wonders and nightmares in pursuit of a thief consumed by vengeance. Alice and Malcom begin to traverse the Broken World has realms that might as well be hell itself along with realms shockingly similar to Alice and Malcom’s own. Alice has a tall list of tasks to complete before she can come home. No worries, find and ancient deadly scroll and bring it to Valas, find the thief and bring her back to face justice, find a warrior guide who has no allegiances… Stop an event that will tear apart the very barriers that keep demons at bay… Oh and prevent the Furies from being set loose on the world causing the destruction of all humanity. However there is one small catch… No biggy but without accomplishing all her tasks Alice and Malcolm are trapped in the broken world and can never return home. Another downside the sorcerer magic is killing her twice as fast, her magic won’t work and almost everything alive (or undead) want to kill them it’s fine…. So basically just another day at the office for Alice and Malcolm. Join this ride to see if Alice and Malcolm make it back. The revelations in this book are epic so this installment is not to be missed!!! Please read in order tho or you miss a lot. I highly recommend this series. I am loving every minute of it!
This series is the gift that just keeps on giving!
I was so happy to get an early ARC, as I've really enjoyed the series previously, and almost forgot how much I've missed it on this two-year gap between novels.
I had recently read Alice Worth and the Elite Death Machine, which was the novella before this, and helped get back into the characters.
But you guys, this was so good. It was so good, that when I finished it (in like, 2 days), I went back and re-read the entire series again, just so I could re-read Heart of the Damned and be up-to-date with all the characters.
The author just has such a clever and brilliant way of embedding themes throughout her novels, and of making Alice's growth feel natural, while bringing up how she's changed for the better. After the events of Heart of the Pack Alice is in a much better place psychologically/with relationships, which is nice to read. The stakes just seem to get higher every book, and Edmonds has really skillfully woven some cliffhangers and plot points that will benefit from more exploration in future books. The action was phenomenal, and the risk-reward ratio kept me on edge the entire time, even on the re-read.
It's lovely getting to know characters that haven't been around as long in a new way, (Matthias' arc is really such a mirror to Alice's, it's great); and to see older characters in a new light.
Definitely read this book, and honestly, everything Lisa Edmonds writes.
Heart of the Damned is the ninth book in the Alice Worth series and it is so great to be back with all of them! When the story begins, everyone is still dealing with the aftereffects of the vampire coup, including the newest member of the pack, Matthias. Alice is about to have her first dinner with her evil grandfather, there's a serial killer on the loose and Alice has been asked to help find them, and Charles is working on some new schemes that affect Alice and the rest of the pack. There's quite a bit going on in this book and it's a good thing Alice has a diverse set of allies to help her.
I really love this world; Alice and Sean are awesome together, and I love the strength of their relationship. Malcolm is the best sidekick anyone could ask for, and I really like Matthias now too. Honestly, I could keep listing all the side characters that I like, they're all so well written--even the cat dragon and baby Daisy. I thought the mystery of the big bad guy’s identity was well done, and I definitely didn't see it coming. This book had so much going on that I was up later than I planned every night trying to read ‘just one more chapter’. As usual the only thing that I regret is that I read it too fast and now I'm stuck waiting for the next book in the series. This is one of those series that I love, and I will happily keep reading it as long as the author keeps writing it!
Usually if it's been years since I've read a series and a new release comes out, I like to re-read to refresh with my bad memory - but in this case, it's a long series and I have read it twice, so I jumped into the newest Alice hoping i wouldn't be too lost. There were a few things I couldn't recall clearly, but it worked.
Their newest pack member Matthias is a big part of the new book, ghost fans get plenty of Malcolm, there's some developments which ended up good to me with Charles, Sean is kind of the background but there with his awesome self, Alice has come a long way from the original books. We have some grandfather scenes (shudders) but they stay interesting.
I adore Detective Diaz and would enjoy more of him as the human counterpart with investigations. The side mystery with innocent people being framed for murder ended up interesting! No spoilers but I recognized some of the historical serial killer names, which was a neat twist. Some of the Valas stuff confused me a bit. We seem to be heading for a larger, big villain hinted at in this story that's to come in future books. Definitely a series still holding strong and hoping many more to come.
“Sometimes you need to feel what you feel. Even if it means you lose your shit.”
Mage private investigator Alice Worth has just survived a kidnapping and accepted a proposal from alpha werewolf Sean Maclin. Before they can celebrate, a coup at the Vampire Court threatens everything Alice has built. As she fights to protect her loved ones, she and her ghost sidekick, Malcolm, reluctantly take on a case involving a man who claims he murdered while under the influence of a supernatural force. Initially skeptical, they find evidence supporting his story and must hunt a dangerous entity. With challenges piling up—tracking a killer, keeping her loved ones safe, and facing a ruthless black magic practitioner—Alice fears she may be overwhelmed. Will she be able to confront these dark forces and find a way to save herself and those she loves?
The pacing is fast, with plenty of twists and turns that kept me hooked. I enjoyed the humor and camaraderie between the characters, and Alice’s struggles feel relatable amidst the chaos. If you’re into urban fantasy with a blend of mystery, action, and a touch of romance, this book is definitely worth picking up. It leaves you wondering how Alice will navigate the dark forces coming her way!
A big thanks to Lisa Edmonds for sending me a digital ARC of this book!
The latest addition to Alice’s series, Heart of the Damned, brings all our favourite characters back into the fold. Alice, the heart of the pack and its consort, stands alongside Sean, the alpha, as they navigate the complex dynamics that define their world. Malcolm, the quintessential ghost sidekick, is as entertaining and reliable as ever, adding both humour and depth.
In this instalment, we see Alice make crucial progress in understanding both Moses and Charles, grappling with the roles they play in her life. She continues to make progress in the difficult compromises she must make and recognises the importance of self-care, forgiving herself for actions she was forced into because of Moses. At the same time, she starts to let go of her anger over Charles’s betrayal, not for his sake but for hers.
True to the series’ tone, there’s a dark edge threading through the narrative, intensifying the suspense and raising the stakes in solving a necromancy murder spree. Yet, Alice and her friends ultimately emerge from the darkness, stronger and more resilient than before.
Heart of the Damned delivers the action, character growth, and suspense that fans have come to expect from Alice’s world. It’s a compelling read, full of grit and heart, and leaves readers eagerly awaiting what’s next in the series.
It was a 3.5 stars for me. *** note I was given an ARC but I have not been asked to review** It was lovely to return to the world of Alice but this book felt like it was a stepping stone to what is to come. But I still devoured this book
I really liked how the author reminded you of past events without re-telling the story but there was a couple of typos.
I did think this book was missing the usual character banter and witty and cunning conversations. There was only 1 Charles conversation and none of Carly’s therapy and wisdom. Perhaps a sign that Alice really is growing.
But it also felt that very little happened. Charles is the new head but he didn’t do anything other than wait for Alice’s call. Arkady didn’t get to fight. Sean didn’t get to comfort Alice or do much with the pack except for 2 hard convos with the newest pack member. There was no ronan. And even Malcolm didn’t have much airtime.
Nothing really happened with her grandfather either.
And Alice had figured out the supernatural murder case pretty early on
So the usual murder mysteries and action felt like they were missing but it did feel like the ground work was being laid for some big things to come…. Or so I hope! 🤞🤞
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Fabulous. Long awaited 9th book in the Alice Worth series doesn't disappoint. Alice is juggling fallout from killing Valas & Vlad, a case with a serial killing necromancer & his deadly spirit minions, legal challenges in the form of criminal charges from the vampire court and the machinations of new leader former ally/friend Charles who also want the return of their 'property' Matthias former vamp guard & newly made werewolf and weekly dinners with her evil criminal grandfather. Luckily Alice has come along way in the past year in accepting the love and support of Alpha werewolf Sean, BFF ghostly sidekick Malcom and all her friends. I loved Matthias and getting to know him and how he has fitted into the pack and how Alice cares so much and works so hard to help and the parallels she sees between herself and her struggle accepting she was worthy of the love & friendship she was offered. I also really enjoyed seeing more of Katy & Carly - but particularly Katy who like most of Edmonds characters has an interesting backstory I want to know more about.
And does anyone else feel the need for a series about Carly?
I received an ARC from the author but all views expressed are my own opinions.
Plucky ghost sidekick? Check. Mysterious new big bad? Check. A golden retriever MMC? Double check. A brand new Alice Worth story? Triple check! Bring it on!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the new installment in the Alice Worth series! To me, it felt like coming home. This series has been a constant in my life for years, and I cherish it. The pacing was great, the story was intriguing, and I loved seeing beloved characters make an appearance. (Just saying, I kinda ship Matthias and Carly together lol)
This story takes place a bit after the previous one, and does Alice get a well-deserved break? Of course not! Our favorite mage PI definitely goes through the wringer in this book, but she has her support system the entire time. Alice has come so far emotionally and mentally throughout the past nine books, and her character development is beautiful.
Lisa Edmonds will forever be an insta read for me, and I can't wait to see Moses get the swift kick to the butt he deserves. I'm super excited for book ten!!
