Readers rate Exiles on Earth 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟"I totally blazed through this novel! Not only is the romance absolutely spot on and the characters so endearing and engaging, but the worldbuilding is thought-provokingly perfect.”
"If you want the opposite of a dark romance hero, then you need to read this book! It is fun, sweet, funny, and cute with great characters and character development. That hero is so sugary sweet!”
"I honestly don’t know what I’m going to read in the interim. This one is leaving me with a major book hangover.”
Proclamation and promise to readersI want to state for the record that I don't use generative AI AT ALL; I use Google docs to draft, ProWritingAid to help catch Echoes and Repeats (not any of the AI stuff that they're peddling, so whilst I have a lifetime licence with PWA, I do not use their AI tools and will move away once a cost effective non-AI alternative is available), human beta readers, a human editor Dana's Edits, a human proofreaders, a software called Vellum (NOT Vellum AI, completely different) to format the ebooks and paperbacks, and my covers for this series come from Miblart. I want humans to create and enjoy art; I wouldn't expect you to enjoy anything I couldn't be bothered to write myself, and I enjoy stretching my skills as an author.
I happened across this book while pursuing Kickstarter. I figured now was a good time to read it as Bea Tama has just launched a Kickstarter for #2 in the series. And boy, I'm so excited! This book was fun, exciting and had a protective, supportive, cinnamon roll, "consent king" hero. Just all the good things! I cannot wait to continue this series! If you want the opposite of a dark romance hero, then you need to read this book! It is fun, sweet, funny, and cute with great characters and character development, while still having some steam. I'd probably rate it at about 1.5 chili peppers out of 5 on the spice meter. And this book also is dual POV! I just love seeing inside the hero's head. And Elia? That hero is so sugary sweet!
Elia, Gara, Dom, Arik, Nevare, and Arture are exiled clones (called Tubers) from their planet, Oloria, for a "failed" mission. They crash-land on Earth, specifically Scotland and into Ellen's barn. From there the group of aliens first meet Ellen, and then her friends: Nichole, Laura, and Arabella. Elia and Ellen, after an initial bumpy meeting, team together as Elia is the leader of his group and Ellen seems to be the leader of the human women. Elia and Ellen have a pull towards each other that neither of them can explain. But, to Elia it doesn't matter why he feels the way he does. He will protect Ellen above everything else. I loved these two together and I'm so looking forward to more. :)
Even though this is a short book there was A LOT of action! And not only do we have a setting on Earth, but we also have a setting on Oloria, which surprised me! This novella is a compulsive read. It's action packed with a swoon worthy alien hero... and yes, he also has a magical eggplant. hehe
The next book Invasive Species will feature Gara and Arabella.
I'm so glad I decided to give this novel a chance. While this isn't a genre I usually read, I know this author's other works and really enjoyed them, so took the plunge and it was definitely the best decision ever. This alien romance surprisingly contains a really deep and thought-provoking considerations of how trauma works to undermine our attempts to achieve our best lives, all wrapped up in an exceptional social critique. I love the exploration of what a matriarchal society, predicated on the current extreme all-men-are-bad rhetoric of radical feminism, would look like. The author puts into perspective how harmful such an ideology is and how it undermines the truth of the matter.
This wonderful romance is far from light and fluffy, and although it might be considered an "escape" from reality, I found it also shines a spotlight on things that are very problematic, and at the same time provides a clarion call for humanism, promoting tolerance of difference and seeking the commonalities while treating all with dignity.
Ellen and Ilia are so wonderfully supportive of each other and really show what a healthy relationship looks like, where both partners strive to see the other at their best and achieving their dreams. It was beautiful to see them develop as individuals by learning from each other and standing up for each other despite all the hardships they face. They embody the idea that when we stand together, we can actually achieve anything, no matter how difficult.
I am really looking forward to the rest of this series and simply cannot wait to find out what happens next.
OH MY STARS, WAS THIS FANTASTIC! I'm pretty new to alien romance, in fact I've only read one other short series of books set in this genre before this, and because they were more of a humorous romance, I wasn't prepared to be blown away by such a beautiful story. A story that not only borrowed it's way into my very soul but grabbed hold of my heart and refused let go, even after I finished the last page. Sure I've read plenty of romance before, in fact it's my go-to choice of book, but this was definitely on another level with the journey Ms Tama took my emotions on throughout this tale. Having not read anything by this author before (an oversight that WILL be corrected believe me) I had no idea what to expect, but OH BOY am I glad I picked this up as the character development, wonderful writing and world building was just breathtaking and now I'm hopelessly hooked desperately waiting for book 2....
Being an engineered clone, all Ilia wanted was a chance to enter The Mating Games and prove he is worthy to have a mate of his own. But when he is accused of a crime he didn't commit and exiled, he finds himself along with his crew stranded on a strange planet.
Ellen has more than enough problems in her life, trying hard to turn her dreams into reality keeping her farm afloat. So when a spaceship crash lands into her barn obliterating it to rubble, she can see all her hopes fade to ash. But when the gorgeous, colour changing alien insists on rebuilding everything he wrecked she finds herself drawn to him in ways she never thought possible.
I loved Ellen from the start, fiercely independent and determined to keep her family's farm, she is reeling from another set back by being rejected by the bank. So the last thing she needs is a space ship in her backyard. She has built up strong walls after being hurt in the past and is more used to doing things by herself, only relying on her very small circle of friends. And when she first meets Ilia she's utterly furious at him (after she rushes in to rescue him with a shovel,) that is, until she starts to get to know him and the world he comes from. Watching her walls start to crumble around the gentle alien really melted my heart because she slowly realises that she isn't the only one to have dreams and love is worth the cost of any price to pay.
Oh my god, did I love Ilia right from the first moment I met him. Raised in a matriarchal society, he was created to serve and be subservient to the females that rule over him, so all he knows is how to please and not stand up for himself. The fact that he is the first clone to ever pass the tests to enter The Mating Games is a dream he has held close to his heart. When he is charged with a crime and exiled along with his crew, he blames himself for the situation they now face feeling guilty he has dragged them into his punishment for something he has wanted more than anything. Crashlanding on Ellen's farm he is determined to make her happy by rebuilding her barn and showing her that she is also worth fixing. I simply adored this kind, compassionate, overwhelmingly beautiful soul who literally stole my heart and wouldn't let it go. Yep he's definitely one of my favourite book boyfriend's to date 😍
I loved everything about this, and the themes of determination, loyalty, hope and love that are threaded throughout this story really made my heart soar. This is my first book by Ms Tama but I can guarantee it won't be my last, and I can't wait for the second book in this series to learn more about these lovable aliens. This was a 10/10 read for me, so if you haven't read this yet what are you waiting for? Highly recommend 😁
I totally blazed through this novel! Not only is the romance absolutely spot on and the characters so endearing and engaging, but the worldbuilding is thought-provokingly perfect. I never expected an alien romance to so brilliantly portray what a dystopian matriarchy could look like and also be a fantastic example of humanistic thought. I’m absolutely, devastatingly in love and cannot wait to find out what happens next, especially since things are set up for a new couple within the same larger group of characters. I honestly don’t know what I’m going to read in the interim. This one is leaving me with a major book hangover.
EXILES ON EARTH was an interesting read and I liked the uniqueness of the alien world and male aliens that are more subservient rather than being the alpha males that we usually see in science fiction romance. I thought the first half was really good and I was really invested in how Ilia and Ellen would build their relationship. Ellen was a strong and independent woman who was used to getting things done and Ilia was a sweet alien who desperately wanted to find a mate and have someone to care for.
However, once we rolled into the second half and it took place on Ilia's home planet I started to lose interest in the story because it just got so convoluted. I got really tired of the back-and-forth of Ellen not realizing that Ilia was interested in her. She was so oblivious and it got frustrating because it lasted all the way through like 90%. It just felt like the second half dragged and I was much more interested in Ilia building a life on Earth rather than competing in the Mating Games.
Overall, this wasn't a bad read but my enjoyment didn't hold out through the whole book and I don't plan on reading anymore in the series.
Shells bells and singing hornets, heck was this good! SERIOUSLY good! I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!
Two different planets, two very different set of people, both feeling anxiety, disappointed, hopelessness in their guts. And the reason I couldn't put it down... this author grabbed my attention at the vile treatment of Ilia and his crew, that would be in a galaxy far, far away...ok, couldn't resist that 😁 On a planet that is female dominated, a planet where females they are the supreme rulers and their law is final, where males are seen as disposable, a crew of Clones, yes...Clones, is facing execution. How cool and talented does an author have to be to get me to IMMEDIATELY like the Clones, IMMEDIATELY get me to want to right the injustice of their situation? Well... THIS is oozing talent, it seeped deeply into me, so yeah, unputdownable! And...after only 2 chapters, I was already half in love with Ilia! So, Ilia and crew are banished from their planet, put in an airship and discarded to who knows where...
On the other side of..... wherever..., on Earth, a dedicated young woman, Ellen, is nursing her disappointment with another rejection from the bank. Her dreams of turning her farm round into a profitable enterprise, thwarted, time and time again. I immediately got to like her too, she's so impressionable, I couldn't do anything else but feel her pain. And then the two worlds collide, yep, I'm on a roll with the puns here 😂 The encounter of Ilia and Ellen was so funny, I was laughing up a storm! And not in the scared, horrified way, you just HAVE to read it! It's not a comic read by any means, but the snippets of humour are undeniably comical. The author actually caught me off guard at how much depth there was to the story, how much more intricate a plot it was, there is purpose to this story, besides the immensely entertaining read, this book is chockers with sociatal imbalances, indoctrination and the under trodden. A society that's so skewed, a brutal society where males are subservient, a society that's so prejudiced, a society of rigid rules blinded by the truth. A society that Ilia and his crew have "wronged" and sent into exile.
I was in heaven with these characters, not only Ilia and Ellen, Ilia's entire crew, so supportive of him, looking up to him, just gorgeous. Floss, Ellen's dog, a perfect companion. And then we have Ellen's friends, steadfast, giving, loving. Ilia and Ellen I've already mentioned how much I adored them, the entire brewing thing between them, mired in misunderstanding and misconceptions, could not prevent the emotions bubbling up, could not keep feelings at bay, no matter how much they denied what was right in front of them. All actually very realistic, it's easy to misunderstand anothers words, it's easy to feel one is doing "the right thing" in letting go. But I seriously wanted to shake Ellen up a few times! Why? Well... it's been drummed into Ilia that he MUST obey all females, in everything, all the time, so free will is inconceivable. His purpose was to serve, not to question, not to request, not to present any needs and Ellen took him at face value. Ilia is gentle, sweet, kind, conscientious, considerate, protective, all round awesome!
Ms Tama doesn't stop here, oh no, she takes this plot and flipping runs with it, off world! Yes, she sure surprised she dickens out of me with the next set of twists! Oh heck, heart pounding action, churning emotions, rampant adrenaline as the story got more and more complex and, honestly, pretty nerve racking! What a riveting read! And gosh, I know I mentioned twists, but you have NO idea! Floss!!! Like wth??? Brilliant! I wasn't certain if queen b*tch would prevail, I wasn't sure if All Mother would be able to stop the injustice, I wasn't sure if Ilia would survive! So once more I say, this author gave me an outstanding read to really get to grips with, to really immerse me, entirely!
I've haven't met aliens...yet...but Ms Tama got ALL the elements just right! This book delighted me, this book has my insides melting from the spice, this book has me grinning and weeping and cheering and whooping, safe to say, this book gave me EVERYTHING!
I'm so thankful this story was recommended to me! I wasn’t sure what to expect from a clone-centered sci-fi romance (which I don't really gravitateto), but wow—Exiles on Earth blew me away.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5) 🔥.5 (1.5/5) Tropes: Forced Proximity, Found Family, Exiled Clone, Political Intrigue, Fish Out of Water, Mating Games, True Mates, Matriarchal Society, and Cultural Differences
The author does a fantastic job exploring the emotional complexity of clones—can they truly love? After all, they're engineered beings… but does that mean they're incapable of feelings? Or, like robots, is there more beneath the surface than we assume?
“I knew one day clones would prove worthy of a mate,” she says in a sound bite. “I know he’s proud of himself, but I’m also proud of how far we’ve been able to prove that they have thoughts, feelings, and now a drive to achieve higher callings.”
Ilia is the ultimate cinnamon roll MMC: sweet, protective, and once he understands the scope of his feelings for Ellen? Hot damn.
"I was nearly mate-binding with you from the moment you rescued me from the bot, and there is no one else I would rather face this life with. I adore you, I admire you, I love you. I choose you again and again and again, El-len."
The world-building is rich and immersive from the very first page, and the cultural differences between their worlds are explored with depth and care—adding layers to the story without overshadowing the romance.
While I'm not big on miscommunication, it was handled lightly and didn’t detract from the story-it made sense and was a perfect addition to their journey. This book is sweet, funny, and surprisingly thought-provoking, tackling themes of trauma, autonomy, and societal imbalance within a matriarchal structure.
"A woman like that is a rare find, Tuber, and she’s in love with you. Now take her with both hands and make her the happiest female alive.”
Ellen and Ilia’s relationship is the heart of it all—supportive, empowering, and full of consent (Ilara is truly the sweetest and genuine guy).
“I’ll make your dreams come alive, El-len, just as you’ve made mine.”
Highly recommend if you're craving a sweet, unique, and adventurous sci-fi romance. Excellent start to a new series!
Looking forward to book 2, and secretly hoping we will see Shara's story!
I really enjoyed this novel. I’ve only dabbled in reading a few sci-fi romances, but this one really makes me want to read more. The aliens are pretty cool with their different abilities and I like how their scales change color and it means different things. I really loved the world building. I think my favorite parts were when the MMC had crashed landed on earth with his crew and I was seeing the dynamics of them all together and I did like his interactions with the FMC.
I found the story to slow down a bit when they went back to the alien planet. This novel would have gotten five stars from me, but things started to become a bit repetitive with the inner monologues and how the FMC Kept saying the same reasons over and over again for why she thought the MMC wouldn’t choose her as a mate. I don’t like plot lines that are based off of lack of communication from the main characters, and that is what was happening. Because obviously it’s a romance and they were both into each other and if they would just talk to each other they’d be able to figure this out, but then the story wouldn’t even happen because there would be no story.
And another reason I didn’t rate the story five stars was because I felt that some transitions were missing either a sentence or paragraph here and there to make things make sense. I know I’m not always great at picking up details in novels, but sometimes I had to stop because I was confused and go, what just happened? Did I miss something?
Anyway, I still enjoyed the story a lot enough that I want to read about the other members of the crew.
4.7 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ & 1 🌶️. Ooh this one had me hooked right from the start! You are flung straight into the action and the alien world is very cleverly introduced. Along with our brooding crew of hot misfit alien clones.
Illia and his other clone crew crash land after a banishment gone wrong for a very wrongly punished crime. Luckily they crash land into level headed Ellens land and her also very supportive of alien men friends. She quickly sees an opportunity from their servicing needs and gets them to work replacing her barn in exchange for keeping their landing secret. What she didn’t expect was her growing feelings toward their leader Gerverstock alien, Ilia.
I loved Ellen and her farm and all the ideas she had for sustaining her family business. I also liked her character and her friends too.
This was exceptionally well written and the world building was fabulous. There was also a pet Cameo guys! And her interaction with Ilia was adorable. Guys if a dog trusts him it’s usually a decent sign right?
I flew through this book and genuinely struggled to put it down I kept having to select strategic points to sit it down for the evening. I read this in 3 sitting pretty much.
The idea of the mate games whilst disturbing was a very clever way to introduce us quickly to different elements of the planet and the societal rules and also *ahem* other physically alluring learning of certain anatomy and features. This was all very unique and I loved it all. All of it made me fall for our adorable Gerverstock and where can I apply to have one crash land on certain Earth land? Asking for a friend…
It’s really refreshing to have a book set in the UK - story flowed well even though the ending was predictable and follows the standard “boy meets girl, falls in love” plot. Aliens from a matriarchal society crash land on a farm in the UK and, Ellen a struggling young farmer takes them in as they promised to rebuild her farm.
Spice: 🌶️ 🌶️
Dual POV
The author did a great job to make sure that the frustrations of neither Ellen (fmc) or Ilia (mmc) admitting they liked one another came across to the reader. I was so annoyed and frustrated on behalf of both of them not being truthful to one another.
Editing needs to be cleaned up - there were mistakes. Eg using Him when referring to Ellen. And some simple issues that should have been picked up by the editor like Ilia didn’t know what plant he was holding and referred to it as having blades. The author did a great job building this up and It was obvious he was holding some grass but he didn’t know the word yet. But then immediately he refers to it as grass in the next paragraph- when this could have be referred to as “plant” again. There was a couple of instances like this through the book which would ruin the magic of seeing something ordinary on earth through alien eyes.
But nonetheless, I enjoyed it. I’ve already got the next 2 instalments (which focus on other aliens in the crew lined up on my kindle).
Whenever I find myself in reading slumps there is one sure fire way to pull me out: read alien romances! I don’t know what makes them that something special, but they simply are. I always enjoy picking up a new title to explore, and my newest is Exiles on Earth.
Ilia is an alien male who has been exiled with his crew from his planet for a crime they did not commit. They land on Earth, specifically on Ellen’s farm, creating destruction on a property Ellen hoped to convert into a dream bed and breakfast. Ilia tasks himself and his crew to rebuild her home, and in the process may find his own in her heart.
I would consider this a wonderful selection for readers new to alien romance. It hits all the familiar tropes, which is sure to bring delight. Admittedly, I found myself feeling the story beats too predictable to enjoy. I did not remain engaged as I come to expect from alien romances, but it all comes down to being a cup of tea. We all have our preferences, and this wasn’t quite my flavor, but I do think it will be just right for others, especially those who haven’t had a taste of alien romancing yet!
Thank you RR Book Tours for the complimentary copy, I leave this honest review voluntarily.
I loved the premise of the book but not the execution. 44% in and the FMC and all her female friends (especially Arabella 😤) come across as intense b*tches. Not a good mix for these alien guys who were exiled from a matriarchal society. How about showing them a bit of compassion instead of taking advantage of them?
The guys crashed onto the planet and accidentally destroyed the FMC’s barn bc….they crashed, ya know? On accident. So of course the logical response from the FMC and her friends is to hang that over the guys’ heads and coerce them into fixing it so the girls won’t report them to the authorities. And freaking Arabella…the way she takes advantage of the guys’ built-in subservience to females by constantly adding to the remodeling plans of a house and property that isn’t even hers…and even takes pictures of the guys when they’re cooling off swimming 😒😒😒
That was the biggest thing I took issue with, but the little thoughts and reactions from the FMC and her friends just made everything worse.
I really, really loved the first half of this book! It’s such a refreshing departure from your typical alien-abduction or post-apocalyptic storyline—especially since it takes place mostly in rural England (which never seems to attract many aliens in the movies!). The dystopian matriarchal alien society was another nice spin, and I felt like the author really explored what that would mean for males, and especially clones. It definitely makes for a unique kind of alien hero!
However, about halfway through, the book suddenly becomes a kind of Amazing Race in Space, which I was much less interested in and not expecting, based on the blurb. There was also a simple misunderstanding keeping the protagonists apart, which is one of the most frustrating plot devices, along with multiple ill-timed interruptions that felt very clunky.
But I’m still up for reading the rest of the books in the series, especially if they take place mainly on Earth.
Thanks so much for Hambright PR for the ARC opportunity. As always, this is an honest, voluntary review.
I didn't read alien romance in a very long time but I'm glad I decided to give this a chance. It was interesting to see a species coming from a different system and read about them trying to understand rules on Earth, as well as see how humans handle the situation. The romance was romancing in this one. Ilia was such a caring, soft (and of course, not so soft) character, I just wanted to hug him constantly. Ellen and her friends are so great, I loved their dynamics. It was nice how Ellen and Ilia's relationship grew through the story.
If you're after alien romance with soft characters, this is for you.
A book i wouldn’t normally pick up but i really enjoyed this book. Ilia is the head of his team and although a clone who is just supposed to do what he is told he wants to find a female to settle down with. Ellen wants to build a future on her farm that will last for years to come. When Ilia crashes into her barn she and her friends see an out of the box solution to make all their dreams a reality. I really enjoyed all the characters in this book and as Ilia and Ellen return home from an unexpected trip the books ends on a cliffhanger. It looks like the next book will be about their friends and i can’t wait to see what happens next
Went in expecting a sweet treat, got a whole 7-course meal! I instantly fell in love with Ellen's practical and plucky attitude and Ilia's gentle, yet fiercely protective nature left me swooning and all melty inside. The dual POV was a great choice by the author as I enjoyed viewing the story from each of their perspectives, especially Ilia when challenging his home planet's "rules." The secondary characters were equally endearing and I can't wait for Arabella's story and watching her unravel Gara. Exiles delivers romance, fish-out-of-water growth, matchmaking trials, one determined group of besties, and deliciously steamy moments!
OMG I have completely neglected my adult duties this weekend, I have not been able to put this book down 😅
The plot had me gripped to my seat, whilst drooling over the mmc!
A hot alien who worships the ground you walk on, wants to help reach all your aspirations and dreams, has been trained to please.... and has not one but two 🍆🍆 need I say more!
If you loved Ice Planet Barbarians, you need to read this 💙
This was an awesome one day read because I’m obsessed!
I love alien romances so I was excited to begin this series. It was such a unique approach to one of my favourite genres.
I love a protective MMC. Ilia is such a big sweetheart. His planet is a matriarchy. While a matriarchal society may have some problems as all systems do, I adore how kind and committed the guys are.
Ellen is a total bada$$, going after her goals and dreams. She felt relatable and I loved how this whole adventure panned out. Plus a cute dog… it somehow got better 🖤🤌🏻
This was a well done, fresh take on alien romance (at least for me!). Instead of an abduction, aliens crash landed and our heroine has to deal with the destruction they caused!
Loved the dynamic with the two groups—aliens under Ilia’s command and Ellens fabulous, interesting friends. It was well written and the plot moved along. I loved how possessive and desperate for her Ilia was! I want my own blue, scaly alien who worships the ground I walk on please!
🌶️🌶️/ 5 spice (lots of build up and interruptions but once you finally get that payout, it’s awesome) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/ 5 for character development and story
I did want more at the end about Oloria… hopefully in the next book!
I was genuinely disturbed by how bleak and dehumanizing the MMC’s society was. These were literal clones, conditioned from birth into unquestioning obedience, and it left me with a lingering sense of unease. I kept thinking, they need help — they deserve better than this cold, lifeless existence. It was honestly heartbreaking.
The story itself was okay, but the romance felt overshadowed by the harsh reality surrounding the MMC and his crew.
Additionally, the reactions of the FMCs often felt unnatural, which broke the immersion and made it harder to suspend disbelief.
From the first page I was so intrigued! We have Ilia getting punished for his crimes (bull turd in my opinion) and then they let him go in a suspicious way and then he's crash landing and earth was the closest safest place. Ellen is having a rough time with her farm and she really didn't need Aliens crashing onto her farm but she makes the best out of a bad situation and all the guys was so sweet! I'll definitely be reading the others!
I absolutely loved Exiles on Earth ❤️🔥 If you love alien romance, you will love this. I really enjoyed exploring this new species and watching Ilia exploring a new world and learning new emotions. I was routing for Ellen and Ilia the whole way through and was kicking my legs with excitement by the end.
He was created as a clone. In his society there are very few women. Women are revered and in charge. He is the first Tuber who wins the right to compete in the Mating Games. Men compete for the chance to be noticed by a female and become one of her mates.
But he is sentenced to exile. He crashes on Earth with his crew. He wants to make her happy. They fall in love.
This was a lot of fun to read but also very emotional! The mmc was so caring and exactly what the fmc needed and vice versa. There was such character growth as will mainly in the mmc. He came so far! I can't wait to read book 2!!
Great story with an interesting storyline concept. Ilia really pulls on the heart strings. Can’t wait to continue on to book 2 and hope the author is working on book 3 because I’m not ready to leave this world.
thanks to wings and words for finding this! scifi alien romance it was abit slow at the start to get into, but after a while it flowed! I really enjoyed the character Ellen!
This one fell into my lap in a tiktok live but as someone who grew up sheep farming I was pleasantly surprised to meet Ellen. I look forward to the rest of the series.
This is a nice, easy read with an absolutely adorable cinnamon roll for an MMC. Fun characters, good pacing, and definitely makes me want an exile of my own!
I absolutely loved this book! The world building was excellent! The male characters were intriguing. The Earth women were relatable. I will continue to read this series.
