Amazing book. Well structured, author puts a lot of effort into the research and interviews that allows book to read like a narrative, with Encounter being the main story interspersed with vignettes of the characters and history of Halifax. A pinnacle of history laser focused on one event to get into the roots of larger patterns.
I was in Grade 9 when Encounter happened so I don't remember any of this specifically. But I had to laugh at both the reactions of the visiting panel of 'experts' and the local politicians and heads of various organisations.
I thought Halifax was pretty special in 1970 and I still think that now. But I wonder if Encounter was held again now, what would it look like?
