Eat Yourself Healthy by Jamie Oliver has a lot of good intentions and solid ideas, but it didn’t fully work for me. The book strongly promotes a positive, feel-good approach to healthy eating, which I appreciated, and the recipes are clearly designed with nutrition in mind.

That said, many of the ingredients are difficult to find in Malaysia without visiting specialty or imported grocery stores. This makes some recipes less practical for everyday cooking unless you’re willing to substitute heavily or spend extra time hunting for ingredients.

I also found that while the food is undoubtedly healthy, it doesn’t always look very appetizing. Some dishes feel more functional than exciting, and I didn’t always feel inspired to cook them based on appearance alone which matters when you’re trying to enjoy healthier eating long-term.

Overall, it’s a decent book with useful concepts and good nutritional focus, but its limited accessibility and lack of visual appeal in some recipes hold it back. Better suited for readers with easy access to international ingredients or those who prioritize health over presentation and comfort.

Jamie Oliver ist ein Koch, der wahrscheinlich durch seine mediale Dauerpräsenz auch hierzulande den meisten bekannt ist. Ganz gleich, ob One Pot, Air Fryer oder Quick and Easy – er erkennt Food Trends und hat sogleich die dazu passenden Kochbücher auf dem Markt. Aber eh hier ein falscher Eindruck entsteht, ich bewerte das nicht negativ. Im Gegenteil, ich freue mich darüber, denn Jamie Oliver ist einer der Köche, dessen Rezepte sich auch im Alltag ohne dickes Portemonnaie und mit überschaubarem Zeitaufwand realisieren lassen.

Nun also „Eat yourself healthy“, ein Thema, das uns alle angeht, für Jamie Oliver aber eine Herzensangelegenheit ist, was er ja bereits vor Jahren mit seiner Kampagne für besseres Schulessen in England hinreichend bewiesen hat.

Neben 120 Rezepten und – das ist neu bei ihm – einem detaillierten und nährstoffreichen 2-Wochen-Kickstarter, der auf den Grundpfeilern der gesunden Ernährung nach den neuesten ernährungswissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen basiert. Zusätzlich versorgt er uns mit jeder Menge Informationen zu den benötigten 7-an-einem-Tag und gibt uns 50 Tipps und Tricks an die Hand, mit denen wir unserem Körper ohne großen Aufwand Gutes tun können. Ergänzt wird dies durch vier Seiten mit konkreten Ratschlägen, deren Thema insbesondere Einkauf, Ersatz und Lagerung der Lebensmittel ist. Nicht zu vergessen, die ausführlichen Nährwerttabellen für sämtliche Gerichte am Ende des Kochbuchs.

Die Einteilung der Rezepte birgt keine Überraschung: Frühstück, Mittag, Abend, Wochenende, Süß & Gesund und Getränke. Alle sind durch die Bank weg alltagstauglich, selbst die etwas ausgefallenen Zutaten in jedem Supermarkt erhältlich, und, da Gemüse und Hülsenfrüchte die Hauptdarsteller sind, sogar recht preiswert. Tierische Produkte werden in Maßen eingesetzt, können aber durchaus durch vegane Varianten ausgetauscht werden. Die Zubereitungen sind unkompliziert, also der gewohnte Jamie Oliver-Style und vom zeitlichen Rahmen her, wie wir es von ihm kennen, absolut im Rahmen.

Ein rundum gelungenes Kochbuch mit leckeren, unkomplizierten Rezepten für die gesunde Alltagsküche, das inspiriert und in keiner Küche fehlen darf. Große Empfehlung!

Gesund essen und dabei das Gefühl haben, dem Körper wirklich etwas Gutes zu tun – genau das vermittelt dieses Buch von Jamie Oliver auf eine Art, die berührt und inspiriert. Die Seiten öffnen eine Welt, in der einfache Zutaten plötzlich zu strahlenden Verbündeten der eigenen Gesundheit werden. Mit jedem Umblättern entfaltet sich ein Gefühl von Leichtigkeit, fast so, als würde man eine persönliche Reise beginnen, bei der Genuss und Wohlbefinden Hand in Hand gehen.

Besonders eindrucksvoll ist, wie alltagstauglich die Rezepte gestaltet sind. Es gibt keine komplizierten Zutatenlisten, die nur in ausgewählten Feinkostläden erhältlich wären. Stattdessen finden sich viele vertraute Produkte, die in der eigenen Küche nur darauf warten, neu entdeckt zu werden. Die Kombinationen überraschen immer wieder und lassen erkennen, wie sehr Balance und Raffinesse in jedem Gericht stecken.

Ein weiterer Aspekt, der tief beeindruckt, ist die bildliche Gestaltung. Die Fotografien laden ein, das Essen nicht nur zu kochen, sondern es mit allen Sinnen zu erleben. Allein beim Durchblättern spürt man die Freude am Kochen, die fast schon ansteckend wirkt. Gleichzeitig vermittelt das Buch fundiertes Wissen über Ernährung, ohne belehrend oder schwer verständlich zu sein. Alles wirkt leicht, greifbar und motivierend.

Beim Ausprobieren einiger Rezepte stellte sich schnell ein Gefühl von neuer Energie und Klarheit ein. Das Essen schmeckte nicht nur köstlich, sondern hinterließ auch eine angenehme Leichtigkeit – kein Völlegefühl, sondern Wohlbefinden pur. Es ist dieses Zusammenspiel aus Genuss und Achtsamkeit, das das Buch so besonders macht.

Für alle, die gesunde Ernährung nicht als Einschränkung, sondern als Bereicherung erleben möchten, ist dieses Werk ein Schatz. Es schafft den Spagat zwischen Kochbuch und Lebensbegleiter und zeigt eindrucksvoll, dass Essen der Schlüssel zu mehr Lebensqualität sein kann.

I have long been a “fan” of Jamie Oliver. Albeit a quietly critical one. To me his style has always been ‘simple’, quick and easy with delicious results, especially for families. As an advocate of science-based nutrition, I felt that he overlooked this very important aspect in his previous and popular publications.
“Eat Yourself Healthy – Food to change Your Life” is an all-encompassing, beautifully presented, balanced and tactile collection of all ‘things’ food and especially good health.
There is nothing better than holding a book, propping it open, seeing colour plates of each recipe, preparing and cooking, Inspirational!
Jamie’s ‘awakening’ that he is turning fifty this year, along with, I believe, the books dedication to Michael Mosley have combined to make this book so very functional, factual, appealing and most of toward good health.
His recommendation of “getting seven a day” (of fruit and vegetables) and his explanation of just how much is a portion is a great beginning for his newest book.
As I initially ‘skipped’ through the pages I booked marked numerous dishes to add to my must do repertoire. All for good health and enjoyment. With a closer, slower look I noticed that every recipe has a number in a small circle at the top, 1 to 7. This indicates how many of the 7 foods recommended are in each dish.
To name a few; “Spicy tofu & sweet pepper eggs” for breakfast; “Carrot and sweet potato fritters for lunch; “Thai-style fish curry” for dinner; “Happy fish pie” for the weekend; and all of the “Healthier sweet treats and Drinks.
Jamie’s book closes with a detailed nutrition analysis of every recipe. The back cover is as appealing as the front. His best publication to date.
This would be a marvellous, gift to treasure for any loved one, any time, but why not for this Christmas!

As Jamie Oliver turned 50 this year, he took a moment to pause and reflect on his own health which inspired him to write this book. Through this book, he shares the knowledge and insights he has gained after decades in the wonderful world of food.

The recipes are broken down into three categories: breakfast, lunch/dinner/weekend and sweet treats. All of them use healthy, convenient ingredients with appropriate calorie counts. The best part of the book is the 2-week kickstarter to help us start making healthy changes in our routine! The plan serves two, which makes it really useful for planning meals. You’ll also find 50 hacks for quick healthy shortcuts on busy days.

I enjoyed flipping through the book, salivating at the mouth-watering, aesthetic pictures of food! I’m already making mental notes of what to buy. I miss Weetabix now. And I absolutely love the ideas from the treats and drinks section! Besides that, I’ve gained a lot of ideas to tweak my ordinary meals.

Thank you Times Reads and Putri for this inspiring book that I can use to begin my 2026, insyaAllah.

Jamie Oliver's "Eat Yourself Healthy" delivers exactly what you'd expect: beautiful food photography and accessible recipes focused on health without sacrificing flavor. The 2-week meal plan offers a practical starting point for anyone looking to improve their eating habits. While the 120 recipes cover a good range of options from Meatball Traybakes to Strawberry Filo Tarts, I found the book lacking a bit of depth. It feels somewhat polished but flat, missing the personal background stories that make recipes truly engaging. I tried a few dishes and enjoyed them, but didn't feel that immediate excitement to dive into more. Would have appreciated more healthy dessert options. A solid cookbook, but not particularly groundbreaking.

A very handy read and affirming for the changes I have already made in my diet. Jamie includes very easy and “doable” recipes for the average cook. Some great tips and nothing too “fancy” with ingredients most will have access to.

An ok cookbook. Would have been better if the nutritional information was printed by each recipe instead of in an appendix.
