A dark, tangled web of secrets and lies, The Lie She Wears not only started off with a bang, but the plot kept the suspense going with an uneasy sense of dread right up until the perfectly wrapped-up conclusion. Told via dual timelines and multiple POVs, I was quickly seduced by the cast of suspicious characters, including a mysterious narrator. All deliciously complex and realistically flawed, each of the personas in this character-driven tale of domestic suspense had me in the palm of their hand. After all, they guided me through the exploration of thought-provoking themes such as identity, resilience, and familial trauma with ease. Not only that, but it was done with just enough emotional depth that I was pulled even further into this utterly heart-stopping story. Dark and disturbing, the plot had me hooked from start to finish as I side-eyed each of the characters again and again.
All said and done, despite the slow-boiling pace and one narrator whose identity was initially confusing, I still found myself wholly immersed in the twisty, twisty storyline. You see, every time I thought I had it all figured out, another plot-shifting shocker was laid at my feet. I can’t say much more without spoiling it all, but let’s just say that there were plenty of bombs dropped along the way to the jaw-dropping conclusion. And if you know me at all, you’ll know that those are my absolute favorite kinds of finales. Keeping me on the edge of my seat while this sharp, intelligent amateur sleuth took a deep dive into the past, the well-hidden family secrets she slowly uncovered provided plenty of *chef’s kiss* revelations in this suspense-laden tale. So if you love messy, dysfunctional family dynamics, a whodunnit vibe, and interwoven plot lines, you need to grab Marr’s new stunner ASAP! Rating of 4 stars.

Elle Marr is an auto-read for me and I was thrilled to see her latest book posted on NetGalley. The Lies She Wears is a smart, slow-burn psychological thriller, in which Marr threads creepy undertones while increasing the tension. Suspenseful and twisty, this book, for me, is absolutely a five-star read. What can I say? Marr has done it again!!!
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review.
Expected publication date: November 18, 2025
Museum curator Pearl Davis has always had a difficult relationship with her mother, Sally. After her mother’s death, Pearl uncovers cryptic notes Sally wrote to Pearl before her death, indicating that Sally was responsible for the death of a man. When Pearl uncovers the man’s body buried in the backyard of her family home, Pearl knows that what her mother revealed is true. As Pearl begins to look deeper into her mother’s past, Pearl begins to feel that her mother’s secrets may be coming after her and she needs to find the truth before it’s too late.
Author Elle Marr’s new novel, “The Lie She Wears” is an emotional examination of a fraught mother-daughter relationship where long-hidden secrets are uncovered, revealing dangers no one saw coming.
“Lies” is a dual-timeline, dual-protagonist novel. Although the story primarily takes place in the present day, narrated by Pearl, parts of the plot go back to 1992 and are narrated by seemingly various women, converging seamlessly at the end of the novel when the truth is revealed. Each chapter is clearly labeled, so readers immediately recognize who is speaking and when, and Marr’s talent and creativity make the plotline easy to follow.
Although it is obvious from the beginning that the two timelines are somehow connected, it was hard to guess how they would join until the final reveal. Marr provided ample characters that could have been the main culprit and when the truth was uncovered, I can honestly say that it was unpredictable yet realistic. Each character received a satisfying, just ending and Marr ensured that no questions were left unanswered.
There are many characters in this novel, as mentioned, but each one is complex, bringing their own unique perspective to the storyline. “Lies” is the perfect who-dunnit, as each character is equally suspicious as they are believable, with readers being unable to speculate as to the true outcome, until Marr is good and ready to reveal it.
“Lies” provides some interesting background on life as a museum curator, which I found to be educational as well as engaging. Add to that a stalking, sociopathic murderer who wears an antique mask during their kills, and Marr has absolutely checked all of the boxes with “Lies”.
I went into this book without expecting much..but WOW I'm surprised ! It turned out to be a jaw dropping and compelling thriller that completely pulled me in. The story was suspenseful and full of unexpected twists and turns that kept me turning the pages late into the night.
I especially loved the use of dual timelines and multiple POVs...which added depth and kept things engaging throughout. The pacing was spot on 🤌and I was genuinely invested in the characters and their stories. This was my first read from this author and it definitely won’t be the last!
Highly recommend for fans of fast paced unpredictable thrillers.
Thank you Net Gallery and the Author providing me this copy !!
A fast-paced dual timeline thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end. Secrets explode from these pages - but will you be able to keep them?
A mother/daughter relationship that was never normal, but when Pearl’s mother dies she finds old letters her mother wrote to her. And her mom had a secret. Now her childhood starts to make a little more sense. But she should be on alert if her mother’s warnings mean anything.
I loved this book. I found it to be a fun read. The prologue hooks you immediately and the story keeps you entertained throughout. This book was lit. So much happening, I couldn’t put it down. But I also wanna see a crime scene gallery haha. But maybe not real life ones.
Fabulous writing, I’ll def be reading this author again!
This is a gritty, slow burning family drama equal parts unsettling, sinister, and utterly compelling.
Told through dual POVs and split timelines, it unravels a tangled web of deception, buried secrets, and generational trauma. The mystery stays gripping throughout, with a full roster of questionable characters and twist after twist to keep you second guessing. And the ending? Deliciously shocking and exactly the kind of finale I live for.
This is my second read by Marr, and it definitely has me eager to pick up more of her work.
A twisty, suspenseful read. This one is great for lovers of mysteries and hidden family secrets. I enjoyed the multiple POV and timelines, it was a really well rounded story. Great pacing and an easy recommendation!
The Lie She Wears had a solid premise, but the story didn’t fully captivate me. I was expecting more tension and suspense from a psychological thriller. It was a decent read. It just didn’t quite leave a lasting impression for me.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the arc in exchange for an honest review
Thank you to Thomas & Mercer and OTRPR for the gifted copy and thank you Brilliance Audio for the gifted audiobook via NetGalley! ——
If you love a family drama with a dysfunctional family full of secrets and questionable pasts, this book is perfect for you! At heart of the novel is a mother’s love and protection.
The very first chapter sets the tone to the death of Sarah, Pearl’s mother. The mother and daughter duo never had an easy relationship and Pearl is just about to lose her curator job for a theft she claims not to have committed. So Pearl’s world gets tilted even further when she gets multiple cryptic letters written by Sarah that reveal her mother did some very bad things and now Pearl might be in danger. Sarah was also of unsound mind during her final days so are these letters true or fantasy? As Pearl uncovers more family secrets, Pearl realizes she’s in imminent danger and must race against time and pick up all the clues from her mother’s letters to save herself and her family.
This book will have you questioning a lot of characters and trusting nobody. You also don’t have to wait until the end to discover one final twist. There are secrets spilled throughout various chapters that made for unstoppable reading to see what was coming next and the finale was something I did not see coming at all but explains her mother's behaviors during her lifetime.
The Lie She Wears is my first novel from Elle Marr and I’m going to check out her other books as well!
This was an interesting read because I never quite settled in or fully engaged, even though it’s fairly well written. Fans of the author may really enjoy it, but for me it landed squarely in the “just okay” category. Full disclosure: I’m not a big slow-burn girl, so that definitely played a role.
The audiobook was narrated by Emily Woo Zeller, who did a fine job with several characters—but others were a real struggle for me. The issue was twofold: some of the voices/accents felt too much (overly dramatic, high-pitched, or simply hard on the ears), and the overall production quality didn’t feel up to the professional standards I’m used to. Both elements definitely affected my ability to settle into the story.
The book features multiple POVs, which I usually love, but here the plot felt like it meandered and got bogged down in information that wasn’t entirely necessary. I appreciated the museum details and the FMC’s profession, but they took up a bit too much real estate and overshadowed what was supposed to be the thriller thread. And ultimately, that’s the heart of my issue: the thriller just wasn’t… thrilling.
That said, it wasn’t a bad read. It passed the time, and there were elements I genuinely enjoyed. Honestly, had this been packaged as women’s fiction centered on the FMC and her museum life, I think it would’ve landed a lot stronger!
I was fortunate to receive a complimentary ALC from Brilliance Audio. via NetGalley, which gave me the opportunity to share my voluntary thoughts.
How I Rate Because I mostly read ARCs, I focus on how I think fellow readers with similar tastes will respond. I sometimes round up or down based on pacing, prose, or overall impact, and I try to keep my personal preferences from weighing too heavily.
⭐️ 1 Star – Finished, but not for me as it has way too many issues; I never DNF ARCs but would have had it not been one. ⭐️⭐️ 2 Stars – Struggled due to writing, content, or editing issues. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3 Stars – Decent read with untapped potential; recommend with some reservations. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 Stars – Really enjoyed it and would recommend for several reasons. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Stars – Exceptional; lingers in my mind well after reading. A story I’d gladly revisit.
What an amazing story!!! This is my first book by author Elle Marr and I was blown away. She pulled the reader in by slowly unfolding the secret past of Pearl’s mom, who was not as uptight and stuck in the mud as she remembers. In fact, is it even possible that Pearl’s mom just confessed to murder in a letter left to her after her death?
Who doesn’t love a good scavenger hunt? Probably Pearl after realizing the one she’s one has pretty big implications. With each little hint, Pearl unravels memories and secrets that put her life, and sanity, in danger. Can she make sense of this all before it’s too late?
This was a great suspenseful yet quirky mystery that kept me needing more. Set from the POV of two characters in two timelines, the alternating back and forth was pretty streamlined with only a few bumps in the road. The voice narrator kept the entertainment alive when the words weren’t as colorful and she was amazing! I enjoyed this book and look forward to more from this author in the future. Thank you NetGalley and Brilliance Audio for this ALC!
The Lie She Wears 3.5⭐️ The book starts with a bang and had me instantly sitting on the edge of my seat wanting to know all the what/how/whos. I liked the present timeline and the drizzled-in past chapters. I also appreciated the POV switch up in Part 3. This took me a while to finish-no fault of the book, just life. I wish I was able to read straight through to avoid confusion when it came to the twists and so many characters/suspects. I was also distractedly annoyed that Pearl wasn’t calling the cops at the beginning of all this. Overall, I enjoyed the suspense and creepiness.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for this ARC. This review will be shared on NetGalley and Goodreads. Pub Date Nov 18 2025
Pearl is coming to terms with the death of her mother, Sally, with whom she never had a great relationship. But when she receives a strange letter left to her by Sally, she’s completely thrown – her mother confesses to murder. She doesn’t know what to believe; is it just a sign of her mother’s worsening dementia, or has her mother been keeping some seriously dark secrets? And what on earth is she supposed to do with this information? Pearl has no idea how much her life’s about to change.
The story’s told in alternating viewpoints of multiple characters, one of whom remains an enigma for most of the book. And it’s not your typical mystery plot, trying to determine who committed the crime, as we’re told at the start who did it, but the question is why.
I enjoyed the behind-the-scenes descriptions of Pearl’s job as a museum curator, as it’s something I’ve always been fascinated with. It ties in perfectly with the research she undertakes into her mother’s life. Sifting through old documents and possessions to determine what’s important and who might have the answers Pearl’s looking for. And some of those answers are completely shocking, just when you think you’ve figured out what’s going on. I was really engaged in the story and had trouble putting the book down! I just had to reach the end and see how it would all be tied together. I wasn’t disappointed!
I absolutely loved this book! The twists and turns made for a really fun read, and the ending truly delivered (no spoilers). The writing was excellent throughout, which made it a quick and enjoyable read. I’d highly recommend this one for readers of all genres, but especially if you like thrillers or psychological suspense. You won't be disappointed!
Book Title: The Lie She Wears Author: Elle Marr Publishers: Thomas & Mercer/Brilliance Audio Publication Date: November 18, 2025 Currently Available on KU? ✅ Audiobook? ✅ Narrator: Emily Woo Zeller
🍿 𝘍𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴: I love me an Elle Marr book, and The Lie She Wears was just as twisty and addictive as I had hoped it would be. The story starts with Pearl but it sure as hell doesn’t end there.
🧺 𝚁𝚊𝚗𝚍𝚘𝚖 𝙼𝚞𝚜𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜: I really enjoyed the various viewpoints and thought they did a lot to keep the plot moving as well as highly suspenseful. I had no idea where this one was going to go, and honestly it took me a lot longer to put the pieces together than it probably should have. However, that just goes to show Marr knows what she’s doing and how to keep the reader guessing. This was a very dark read at times and I loved that it went out with a bang!
🎧 𝒜𝓊𝒹𝒾𝑜𝒷𝑜𝑜𝓀 𝒩𝒶𝓇𝓇𝒶𝓉𝒾𝑜𝓃: The Lie She Wears is one of those books that is just begging for a full cast, and I found myself wishing there were one. Don’t get me wrong, Emily Woo Zeller was fantastic, but due to the multitude of female POVs, it would have been very beneficial to have more than one narrator. That being said, this is still very good on audio and Zeller did an exceptional job with all of the viewpoints.
💭 𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴: This will take you on a ride that you won’t want to get off of, and if you love psychological suspense, it is definitely a must read. There is so much tension that just builds and builds as the story goes on, and plenty of layers of secrets to unpack. The conclusion is pretty tidy, which I was a huge fan of, and I couldn’t get enough of the complexity of both the characters and the plot itself.

Title: The Lie She Wears Author: Elle Marr Genre: Thriller Release Date: November 2025 Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
In The Lie She Wears by Elle Marr, Pearl has always struggled in her relationship with her mother, Sally. This struggle only intensifies when Sally dies in an accident. Not only is Pearl left to deal with the death of her mother, but she also now has to figure out if the letters Sally left her to find are true confessions or delusions from her ongoing cognitive decline. Pearl must dig into the past and find the truth, or she could be in danger.
I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. It was a fun, easy, fast read that had me thinking of all the conspiracies. I was Charlie Day in Always Sunny tacking my notes and strings all over the cork board, trying to figure out what was going to happen next. I felt empathy for Pearl as she navigated hard emotions and difficult turns while also admiring her duty to her family in finding out the truth.
The book was told in multiple POVs, which I always enjoy more. I feel like it helps you get a fuller picture of the story. In the case of this book, it was used well, and I never felt like a chapter was wasted or unwarranted. Each character felt like they gave purpose to the plot, even the one who isn’t identified until later in the book.
Overall, I rate this book four stars. I enjoyed the twists and the web of misdirection the author created. I felt satisfied with the final revelations in the book and felt that everything tied together well. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery or as a beach companion for a fast summer read.
Thank you to the author and publisher for gifting me a copy of this book for an honest review.
When Pearl Davis's estranged mother Sally dies, she leaves behind a letter that makes an impossible claim: a confession to murder. Pearl dismisses it as the ramblings of a troubled mind suffering cognitive decline. Until human remains are uncovered in the garden, turning grief into terror. Forced to confront a past she never wanted to examine, Pearl begins digging into her mother's life, following a trail of cryptic letters and long buried secrets. The more she uncovers, the clearer it becomes that Sally was hiding something far darker than Pearl could have ever imagined. And that truth may be closer, and far more dangerous than she's ready to face. As the lies unravel and loyalties are tested, Pearl must decide how far she's willing to go to learn who her mother really was. And what that means for Pearl herself.
A haunting slow burn thriller, The Lie She Wears pulls you in with a chilling premise, a mother's posthumous confession, and then tightens the screws. Elle Marr expertly blends family drama with creeping suspense, turning grief into something sinister. The look at the mother-daughter dynamic is layered, unsettling, and emotionally sharp, making the mystery deeply personal. Just when you think you understand where the story is going, another secret surfaces shifting everything you thought you knew. Twisty and quietly devastating this isn't the kind of thriller that relies on shock value, but rather on dread. Perfect for fans of buried secrets (and bodies), unreliable truths, and revelations that hit harder because they're rooted in family.
Thank you to NetGalley, Elle Marr, Thomas & Mercer and Over the River PR both this eARC and physical copy!
This is a book that’ll make you want to stay up late reading.
Pearl had a mother like no other. She was diagnosed with cognitive decline that ultimately caused her to die while driving recklessly. The estate attorney called Pearl. He had something for her: a note from her mother. It made Pearl feel the greatest fear.
Pearl at 27 had a new job working as an associate curator of Asian art at the Portland Art Museum. She was preparing for a major exhibit. However, one of the valuable masks disappeared and her boss accused her of stealing and sent her away on a temporary leave. Everything was going wrong. Her mom died and now someone was out to get her.
The author described Portland and the characters well -- just as it is with cozy bars and good donuts along with a carefree vibe that can’t be found any other place. The story makes you eager for Pearl to solve her dilemmas and move on in a positive direction. There is a constant state of tension that provides readers with clues. One pointer made part of the story easy to decipher. Yet, there were more surprises that were revealed at the end.
My thanks to Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book with an expected release date of November 18, 2025. The opinions I share are my own.
I do love a good psychological thriller, and this one kept me guessing until the end.
The story is told in dual timelines and multiple points of view. The past section (1992) was confusing because it had a different name at the top of most of the chapters, but as you read along, you will learn that this is the same person. I started to suspect who the person might really be, but watching that story unfold was like watching a dance.
I felt bad for Pearl because her life was not what anyone would want to endure. Her mother was not affectionate, and it felt abusive in a way. I believe some of Sally's past experiences contributed to her treatment of Pearl.
Some intriguing twists move the plot forward even more. Just when I thought I might have figured out a piece of the puzzle, another tidbit was dropped, creating more questions.
The author ties up the loose ends, and it makes for a satisfying read.
Thank you Thomas & Mercer for the gifted copy of this book.
The concept of this book sounded so intriguing - Pearl’s mother dies and leaves her a note saying she killed someone, sending her on a scavenger hunt to unearth long buried secrets. Sounds cool, right?
Unfortunately the execution fell flat for me - it was too slow burn of a thriller for me. I found myself bored at times by Pearl’s storyline. While I was intrigued by the mysteries surrounding Pearl’s mother and ultimately what kept me reading, the story line got more and more convoluted and slow pacing had me considering giving up several times.
This is the second book of Elle Marr’s I’ve read that wasn’t my jam, so I need to admit her writing style just isn’t for me.
The Lie She Wears is a fun read with twists and turns and an ending you wont see coming.
Pearl is dealing with the sudden death of her mother Sally who has left her letters with confessions and things that make Pearl question what is true and what is in part to her mom's declinng health.
Who can you trust in this story told in dual timeliines which makes it all the more intriguing.
Elle Marr takes the reader down a twisted path that will keep you guessing and turning those pages quickly.
This was my first (how can that be) by Elle Marr but not my last.
Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the privilege of reading The Lie She Wears and introducing me to Elle Marr books.
Pearl Davis is a new museum curator who has always had a strained relationship with her mother, Sally. When Sally suddenly dies, Pearl finds a letter from her, confessing to murder , If Pearl can figure out this letter where will it take her? Is this letter a hint into her mothers diminished state of mind or is real? Pearl starts to investigate, she must work out the clues Sally left in the letter. These clues lead her to a body buried in the garden at sally's house. Pearl keeps finding letters with more clues, clues that are also a warning. Sally was terrified. Pearl fears her mothers secrets could end her own life.
This was a little slow to get into, and sounded like it would be your typical thriller, but then it got a little twisty, the pace picked up, and then a little more twisty and I was hooked. I was not expecting the ending, and thought it all came together really well. Told in two timelines and dual POVs, it can be tricky when listening to the audiobook so I was glad I had the physical copy to follow along with. The narrator did a great job with this one and I enjoyed the audiobook as well.
Thank you to Amazon Publishing #partner for the finished copy and to Brilliance Audio for the ALC to review.
This book was intense to start and the premise was interesting. I haven’t read anything like it.
Pearl is dealing with the loss of her mother, as a museum curator her life is full and successful. She wades through the process of grief from losing her mother Sally and sifting through her life when a letter is given to her that uncovers dark secrets of the past. Sending the tension through the roof and her life in a spiral.
With past and present timelines being told and multiple POVs of experiences it was a confusing story to stick with. I enjoyed the suspense and drama and definitely the unknown narrators connection to the main story.
This book was just not for me. Although I did enjoy the dive into learning about a museum curator.
Yup this is ELLE’S BEST BOOK YET!!! THE SUSPENCE, THE LETTERS FROM PEARL’S MOM SALLY THAT ENDING?????????? IT WAS WILDDDDD this was a CRAZY BOOK!! one of my top books of 2025 for sure!!
What a ride! The story is told in dual timelines. Pearl, Sally's daughter, is going through things after her mother has passed away. She finds letters from Sally that include some words written in code, and they lead her to some disturbing finds on their property. Meanwhile, some very odd things begin happening, beginning with the disappearance of an ancient Chinese artifact that goes missing at the museum where she works, an air tag hidden on her vehicle tracking her, and the feeling that someone is following her for reasons unknown. Meanwhile, a character's story begins in a previous timeline. The reader doesn't figure out who it is until much later in the book. There were so many twists and turns in this book. It was slightly confusing at first, but once the author revealed who's story was being told in the earlier timeline, everything came together. I absolutely did not see the ending coming. That, to me, is a great psychological thriller.
This book had me hooked from the very first chapter. Elle Marr knows how to craft a compelling mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end. The pacing was spot-on, and I found myself flying through the pages because I had to know what would happen next.
The story is layered with secrets, tension, and just the right amount of emotional depth. I really enjoyed how the characters were developed—you’re never quite sure who to trust, which made the reading experience all the more immersive. The dual timelines were especially well done and added an extra layer of suspense.
If you love thrillers that keep you up late reading “just one more chapter,” this one is definitely for you! This was my first book by Elle Marr, and now I’m excited to explore more of her work. Highly recommend to fans of twisty, character-driven suspense.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
