Kamala Suraiyya (born Kamala; 31 March 1934 – 31 May 2009), also known by her one-time pen name Madhavikutty and Kamala Das, was an Indian English poet and littérateur and at the same time a leading Malayalam author from Kerala, India. Her popularity in Kerala is based chiefly on her short stories and autobiography, while her oeuvre in English, written under the name Kamala Das, is noted for the poems and explicit autobiography.

Her open and honest treatment of female sexuality, free from any sense of guilt, infused her writing with power, but also marked her as an iconoclast in her generation. On 31 May 2009, aged 75, she died at a hospital in Pune. Das has earned considerable respect in recent years.

If you are someone staying outside your native place for work or other reasons, what is the best way to remove your sadness when you badly miss your family and friends? The answer is pretty simple. Please try to read this book by Madhavikutty.

The author might have written about her Nalapat house and the people in Punnayurkulam. But the way she mentions each and every person and surroundings will take you back to your childhood and your own relatives.

This is, in fact, the best book to read when you are feeling nostalgic. This is one of the few books I reread at least once every two years, as it is one of the few books that never feels old, even after reading multiple times.

"നാലപ്പാട്ടെ പാമ്പിൻ കാവിൽ അനവധി വർഷങ്ങളായി വളർന്നു നിൽകുന്ന നീര്മാതള മരം പൂക്കുന്ന കാലത്ത് നാട്ടിൽ വന്നെത്തുവാൻ കൽകത്തയിൽ ഒരു വിദ്യാർഥിനി ആയിരുന്ന എനിക്ക് സാധിച്ചില്ല. ഇന്നും ആ മരം പൂക്കുമ്പോൾ ഞാൻ അവിടെ എത്താറില്ല.എങ്കിലും എന്റെ അടച്ച കണ്ണുകൾക് പിന്നിൽ വെണ്ണ വർണമുള്ള പൂക്കളും വഹിച്ചു തലയെടുപ്പോടെ നില്ക്കുന്ന ആ മരം വൈകാരിക സുരക്ഷിതത്വത്തിന്റെ ഒരു പ്രതീകം കണക്കെ നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു. അതിന്റെ ഗന്ധം സ്മരണയുടെ രാജവീഥികളിൽ തളം കെട്ടുന്നു. എം ടിയും പൊറ്റെകാടും ബഷീറും- മലയാളസാഹിത്യത്തിൽ അവരുടെതായ ശൈലി കൊണ്ട് ശ്രധയർജിച്ചവർ തന്നെ. എന്നാൽ മാധവികുട്ടിയുടെയത്ര മനോഹരവും കംപെല്ലിങ്ങുമായി എഴുതുന്ന എത്ര സ്ത്രീകള് അല്ലെങ്കിൽ പുരുഷന്മാർ ഈ ലോകത്തുണ്ടെന്ന് സംശയം തോനുന്നു. നോബൽ ജേതാവായ വി എസ് നൈപൌൽ ഒരിക്കൽ പറഞ്ഞു, ലോകത്തില ഒരു സ്ത്രീക്കും അവളുടെ ഇടുങ്ങിയ ജീവിത വീക്ഷണം കാരണം, അദ്ധേഹത്തിന്റെ എഴുത്തിനെ കിട പിടിക്കാൻ പോന്ന രീതിയിൽ എഴുതാൻ സാധിക്കില്ല എന്ന്. മെയിൽ ചൌവിനിസ്മോ ധാര്ഷ്ട്യമോ എന്തുമാകട്ടെ, ശുദ്ധ വന്ഗതരം ആണധേഹം പറഞ്ഞതെന്ന് ആമിയെ വായിച്ചാൽ മനസ്സിലാകും. ആമിയെ വായിച്ചാലെ മനസ്സിലാകു.

എന്തൊക്കെയോ മുൻവിധികൾ കൊണ്ട് മാറ്റി വയ്‌ക്കപ്പെട്ട ഒരു പുസ്തകം, ഒഴിച്ചുനിർത്തിയ ഒരു എഴുത്തുകാരി. അവിചാരിതമായി കയ്യിൽ വന്നുപെട്ടപ്പോൾ വായിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങിയതാണ്. തുടക്കം നിർജീവമെന്നു തോന്നിയെങ്കിലും പതിയെ നീർമാതളം നിറഞ്ഞുപൂക്കുന്നത് അറിഞ്ഞു, നനുത്ത മണ്ണിന്റെ ഗന്ധത്തോടെ നീര്മാതളത്തിന്റെ പൂക്കൾ എവിടെയോ കൊഴിഞ്ഞുവീഴുന്നതറിഞ്ഞു. അവസാന താളുകൾ മറിക്കുമ്പോൾ എന്തിനെന്നറിയാതെ എന്റെ കണ്ണുകളും നനഞ്ഞിരുന്നു.

"അതിഥികളുടെ മുൻപിൽ അച്ഛനും അമ്മയും ഞങ്ങൾ കുട്ടികളും എല്ലാവരും അവനവനു വിധിക്കപ്പെട്ട വരികൾ മറക്കാത്ത നടീനടന്മാരായി മാറി. അതിഥികൾ പോയിക്കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ ഇടനാഴിയിലെ പഴകിയ കണ്ണാടിയിൽ പ്രതിഫലിച്ച എന്റെ സ്വന്തം മുഖവും നോക്കിക്കൊണ്ട് ഞാൻ ഒന്നോ രണ്ടോ നിമിഷനേരം നിൽക്കാറുണ്ടായിരുന്നു- എന്തിനെയോ തേടിക്കൊണ്ട്.”

സർവ സൗകര്യങ്ങൾക്കും നടുവിൽ കമല എന്ന കൗമാരക്കാരി അനുഭവിച്ച ഏകാന്തതയുടെ പ്രതിഫലനമായി ഈ വാക്കുകൾ. ആ വലിയ വീട്ടിൽ, വേലക്കാരുടെ അകമ്പടിയിലും അവരെ സ്വാധീനിച്ച അപകർഷതാ ബോധം, സ്നേഹിക്കാൻ ആരുമില്ലെന്നുള്ളതായിരുന്നു.
പട്ടാളച്ചിട്ടയിൽ വളർത്തപ്പെടാൻ നിർബന്ധിക്കപ്പെട്ട ബാല്യം, വർണാഭമായ കുപ്പായങ്ങളോ മറ്റു കുട്ടികളെപ്പോലെ ഒഴിവു സമയങ്ങൾ സുഹൃത്തുക്കളുമായി പങ്കിടുവാനോ അച്ഛൻ കമലയെ അനുവദിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല. ഒരു നായ്ക്കുട്ടിയെ വാങ്ങാൻ വാശിപിടിച്ചപ്പോഴും നിരാശയായിരുന്നു ബാക്കി.

"എന്റെ പിന്നിൽ വാലാട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടു നടക്കുവാൻ ഒരു പട്ടിക്കുട്ടിയെ വില കൊടുത്തു വാങ്ങണമെന്ന് ഞാൻ കലശലായി മോഹിച്ചു....പട്ടികളുടെ സ്നേഹപ്രകടനം അവർക്ക് ഒരുതരം സുരക്ഷിതബോധം നൽകിയിരുന്നു. എന്നോട് സ്നേഹം പ്രദർശിപ്പിക്കുവാൻ മനുഷ്യനോ മൃഗമോ തയ്യാറായില്ല."

പിൽക്കാലത്തു പ്രണയത്തിന്റെ രാജകുമാരിയെന്നു വിളിക്കപ്പെട്ട കമലാസുരയ്യയുടെ വാക്കുകൾ.

നാലപ്പാട്ട്‌ തറവാട് നൽകിയ സ്നേഹവും സുരക്ഷിതത്വവും മാത്രം അവരെ നിലനിർത്തിപ്പോന്നു. അമ്മമ്മയുടെ കരുതലിന്റെ കീഴെയൊളിക്കുവാൻ മാത്രം അവധികൾ കൽക്കത്തയിൽനിന്നും നാട്ടിലേക്കു തിരിച്ചു. എന്നാൽ ഒരിടത്തു് അവർ പറഞ്ഞുവെച്ചു,

"അമ്മാമനും പോയി, അമ്മമ്മയും പോയി, ജേഷ്ഠനും പോയി, സ്നേഹിച്ചിരുന്നവരെല്ലാം പോയി. ജീവിക്കുവാൻ കാരണങ്ങൾ വൃഥാ തേടിക്കൊണ്ട് ഞാൻ മാത്രം എല്ലാവരെയും ഓർമിച്ചു ഇന്നും ജീവിക്കുന്നു."

ഈ ബുക്കിലുടനീളം എന്നെ അതിശയിപ്പിച്ച ഒന്ന്, തന്റെ ഏകാന്തത തുറന്നുപറയുവാൻ അവർ കാണിച്ച ധൈര്യമാണ്. ഒരു തുറന്നെഴുത്താണ്‌ 'നീർമാതളം പൂത്തകാലം'; നിഷ്കളങ്കതയുടെ, ഒറ്റപ്പെടലിന്റെ, ഗൃഹാതുരത്വത്തിന്റെ, ഒരു തുറന്നെഴുത്ത്. വായിച്ചു തീർന്നുകഴിഞ്ഞും ഓരോ വായനക്കാരന്റെയും ഉള്ളിൽ സജീവമായി നിൽക്കുന്ന എന്തോ ഒന്ന് ഇതിലുണ്ട്. ഒരു കൗമാരക്കാരിയുടെ വിങ്ങലുകൾ, ആശങ്കകൾ, മാധവിക്കുട്ടി വരച്ചുകാട്ടുന്നുണ്ട് . പറക്കാൻ കൊതിക്കുന്ന ഒരു പക്ഷിയെ കൂട്ടിലിട്ടാലെന്നപോലെ ചിറകിട്ടടിച്ചുമാത്രം ബാല്യം കഴിച്ച ഒരു പെൺകുട്ടി. സ്നേഹത്തിനുവേണ്ടി ജീവിതം ഉഴിഞ്ഞുവച്ചവൾ.

എവിടെയൊക്കെയോ, ഒരാഴ്ചക്കാലത്തേക്കുവണ്ടി മാത്രം പൂക്കുന്ന ഈ നീർമാതളം എന്നിലും വസന്തം വിടർത്തിയിരുന്നു. എവിടെയൊക്കെയോ, കമല എന്ന കൗമാരക്കാരിക്ക് എന്നോടും സാദൃശ്യം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. കാരണം ഓർമച്ചെപ്പിലൊളിപ്പിച്ചു അവർ തുറന്നുകാണിച്ചത് സ്വന്തം ജീവിതമായിരുന്നു. കുറവുകളുള്ള, പോരായ്മകൾ നിറഞ്ഞ ഒരു ജീവിതം.

ഞാന്‍ ഏറ്റവും ആസ്വദിച്ച് വായിച്ച് തീര്‍ത്ത കൃതികളില്‍ ഒന്ന്.
ഇത്ര തീക്ഷ്ണതയും സുതാര്യതയും ഉള്ള കഥാപാത്രങ്ങള്‍ ഉള്ള കൃതികള്‍ വളരെ വിരളമാണ്. ഓരോ കഥാപാത്രവും എത്ര മനോഹരവും ആസ്വാദ്യകരവും ആണെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ് ഫലിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ വാക്കുകളില്ല!
ഇതിലെ ഔരോ സംഭാഷണ ശകലവും , ഓരോ സംഭവങ്ങളും , കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളും , എല്ലാം ഒരു പ്രത്യേക അനുഭൂതി തന്നെയാണ്.
മാധവിക്കുട്ടിയെപ്പോലെ അനുഗൃഹീതയായ ഒരു കലാകാരിയെക്കുറിച്ച് ഓരോ മലയാളിക്കും അഭിമാനിക്കാം.. !

മലയാളം കണ്ട ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച എഴുത്തുകാരിലൊരാളാണ് മാധവിക്കുട്ടി എന്ന് അടിവരയിടുന്ന മറ്റൊരു പുസ്തകം. വിവരദോഷികളായ നിരൂപകരും വായനക്കാരും അവരെ ഒരു സെക്സ് സിംബൽ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ പൈങ്കിളി എഴുത്തുകാരിയായി മാത്രമാക്കി നിലനിറുത്താൻ യത്നിച്ചു എന്ന് വ്യക്തം. ബാല്യകാലസ്മരണകളോട് ചേർത്ത് വായിക്കുമ്പോൾ അവരുടെ ഭാവനയുടെയും എഴുത്തുവഴക്കത്തിന്റെയും തിളക്കം സഹൃദയർ ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ കണ്ടെത്തും (രണ്ടാം വായനയിൽ തോന്നിയത്).

Words fail me as I try to exalt this literary creation.Another memoir about growing up in Punniyoorkulam and Calcutta,Kamala Das,paints with words the worlds of yester years.In first person,it avidly captures the dilemmas of growing up and the Little Kamala's way of seeing the world.Her outlook of the world have surprised,shocked and enraged people.The memoir is the celebration of her childhood from when she looked at world differently.Probably as a mere spectator...A must read,as I always say to folks who enjoy malayalam literature.A feast awaits you in the form of "Neermatalam pootha kalam" and it will entice you in the magic of Kamala Das.

"ലോകത്തിൽ മറ്റെല്ലായിടത്തും യുദ്ധം കാരണവും സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യസമരം കാരണവും മാറ്റങ്ങൾ വന്ന് ഭവിക്കുമ്പോഴും നാലപ്പാട്ടും പരിസരത്തും യാതൊന്നും സംഭവിച്ചില്ല. നാലപ്പാട്ട് മറ്റൊരു ലോകമായിരുന്നു. എനിക്ക് വിശ്രമിക്കുവാനുള്ള തുരുത്തു. അപ്രതീക്ഷിതമായി യാതൊന്നും അവിടെ സംഭവിച്ചില്ല. അപ്രതീക്ഷിതമായി ഒരൊറ്റ വചനം പോലും അവിടെ ആരും ഉരുവിട്ടതുമില്ല. കാലവും തന്റെ ദ്രുതഗമനം നിർത്തിവെച്ചു നാലപ്പാട്ടെ പൂഴിമണ്ണിൽ വിശ്രമിച്ചു- എന്നെപ്പോലെ, വേനലൊഴിവിന്റെ അതിഥിയായി. I have read this book 30 times already. Every time I read it I feel like I am reading it first time. It has truly explains a child's innocence , eagerness to explore the whole world moreover,Madhavikkutty portrayed the humor without losing it's natural beauty . Madhavikutty aka Kamala Surayya was not unknown to me. But only small, very very limited facets of her life. When I bought this book, i didn’t realise it was parts of her life. Am not a big follower of autobiographies or biographies.

It was only reading a few pages that I turned to the back to read about the book. But by then the book had grown on me. Her writing and use of words had grabbed my attention and interest. Kept reading and found a beautiful tale of people and some places. She recreated a magic that I had long forgotten. But mostly it was how she simply used words to describe situations or words.

My Malayalam writing vocabulary is still poor. Meaning I can understand words, but very unbrave to try writing. She inspired me today to try and overcome this fear now.
Have to read some other books of hers.

Journey to 1932

One of the finest author of India, Her writing style is truly magical and captivating.

"Neermathalam Pootha Kalam",Is giving me someny memories. My great grandmother,is my best friend in my childhood. She told me someny stories about her childhood and beauty of Kerala.

As a member of young generation. This novel is a time travelling experience for me.

My Grandma is died when I'm studying my fourth class. Reading this book is a sad experience for me.

A beautiful book, it's surely makes you nostalgic.

NEERMATHALAM is a flower, in English it is from the
Garlic Pear tree or Three-leaved Caper. NEERMATHALAM POOTHA KALAM is a story about author Kamala Das 's school days , up until 14 years and inbetween speaking about husband Das 's mother and other details about their ancestors. The book spoke about the olden times which included days before her birth, to her generation and a bit about the generation after it.

It is autobiographical, it speaks about her life in Calcutta (Calicut) & her holidays in her native Malabar. It not only speaks about her but also about the view points of her parents, grandmother, aunt's, uncle, friends, maids etc, it is about her as a girl, learning and understanding good, bad and life from many people's opinions and her encounters in life. The teenage marriage at the age of 15 was not only her friends story but hers too. Marrying much older guys whose age can be compared to their uncle or father was a common matter. Kamala, saw sexual frustration , discrimination & male dominace in decision making, she also witnessed British standards and discrimination from their side from school and many other ways.

I could feel that she couldn't completely agree with anyone's behaviour or any situation even when she wrote her teenage days. Ami (Kamala) speaks more about the servants in the kitchen, the dhobi whose daughter of her age had to marry an old widower, the poor Anglo Indian girl who pursue her to get a job for some relative in her father’s company.

We could meet so many characters who once lived and their emotions, as the author juggled between her days in Calcutta and her ancestral home in South Malabar. A very interesting book, suggested to those who are interested in a normal Indian's life, in the times of British India.

ആമിയുടെ ബാല്യകാല ഓർമകളുടെ ഒരു പൂക്കാലം .അതുപോലെ തന്നെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ ഒരു പെരുമഴയും .നാലപ്പാട്ടും കൽക്കത്തയിലും താൻ കേട്ടറിഞ്ഞതും തൊട്ടറിഞ്ഞതുമായ അനുഭവങ്ങൾ ഓർമ്മകൾ നക്കി തുടച്ചു മിനുക്കി മേന്മവരുത്തിയ വാക്കുകളിലൂടെ മനോഹരമായി എഴുതിരിക്കുന്നു.
ആദ്യത്തെ നാല് അഞ്ചു ഭാഗങ്ങൾ കുഴപ്പിക്കുന്നതായി തോന്നി എങ്കിലും അതുകഴിഞ്ഞുള്ള ഓരോ ഭാഗങ്ങളും കൗതുകത്തോടെ വായിച്ചു വായിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കാൻ തോന്നും.

വായനക്കാരന്‌ ഇതൊരു ക്ഷണക്കത്ത് കൂടിയാണ് നമ്മുടെ കുട്ടിക്കാലത്തെ നീർമാതള പൂക്കളുടെ നാളുകളിലേക് എത്തി നോക്കി സുഗന്ധം നുകരുവാനുള്ള ക്ഷണക്കത്ത്. വളരെ മികച്ച അവതരണമാണ് മാധാവികുട്ടിയുടേത് . ചെറുപ്പത്തിലേ സംഭവങ്ങൾ ഓർത്തു വായനക്കാർക്ക് മടുപ്പുണ്ടാകാതെ എഴുതുക എന്നാൽ അസാമാന്യ കഴിവാണ് . നാലപാട്ടെ വീടും,കൽക്കട്ടയു,അമ്മമ്മയും ,പാറുക്കുട്ടിയും, കുഞ്ഞാഞ്ഞു മാപ്പിളയും അങ്ങനെ ഇതിലെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ ഒക്കെയും നമ്മുടെ മനസ്സിൽ നിറഞ്ഞു നിൽക്കും . പതിനാലു വയസ്സിലെ വീമ്പു പറച്ചിലും,കൗതുകങ്ങളും , ആശങ്കകളും,കള്ളത്തരങ്ങളും, പൊള്ളതരങ്ങളും ഒക്കെ വായിക്കുമ്പോൾ നമ്മുടെ മനസ്സിൽ നമ്മുടെ കുട്ടികാലം മിന്നി മറയും. അന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കാത്ത ഒരുപാട് തിരിച്ചറിവുകൾ അവർ പിന്നീട് മനസിലാക്കിയിരുന്നു അവരെ പോലെ നമ്മളും…..

I loved this book. The gutsy writing and recollection of memories adorned with small yet specific details are enthralling. Kolkata and Kerala lifestyle contrasts, her far fetched thoughts, the first person narrative - I got to know the places and those times through her eyes. Reading the book was an experience in itself

Another captivating classic novel!

In the big India, Kerala is one of the smallest state. Being a Keralite, I feel so proud to live in an era of amazing writers and happened to read some of their books. I feel so astonished seeing their writing style and dedication. Malayalam literature tradition is dated back to centuries. From folk songs era to the modern poetry, novels and many more. What a miraculous growth of malayalam literature.

Madhavikutty aka Kamala Surayya is famous for her boldness and frankness. Her ‘strong feminist leaning’ writing style. Her high standard writing in both English and Malayalam effortlessly.

Neermathalam Poothakalam depicts the childhood memories of Ami (author) in Kerala as well as in Calcutta. A 14yr old’s way of thinking, way of seeing the nature, the curiousness, the mischievousness, anxiousness, loneliness, sadness, the people around her and how they influence her etc etc explained in a way that makes us travel back to our own childhood.

People we’ve lost will never come back. The memories we treasure about them will keep us close to them. So much relatable.

Beautiful writing. A novel which touches the soul. Must read book for those who loves to get away to their childhood memories.

A poignant memoir by Madhavikutty.
I have always admired Madhavikutty's bold thoughts and powerful words. This is yet another gem of hers that I had been wanting to read for so long, and I finally began it on her birth anniversary. The language in the initial chapters was a bit difficult for me to fathom, but gradually, I was swept into the childhood memories of little Aami.

The memoir touches upon the casteism prevalent during the pre-independence and early post-independence era of India. I feel a sense of desolation after finishing the book, as Madhavikutty felt very much alive and near while I journeyed through her memory lane. I could relate deeply to her kind and curious heart, always yearning for meaning and affection.

I highly recommend this to all readers who can read Malayalam, because I don't think a translation can ever truly do justice to our beloved Aami's words.

നീർമാതാളം പൂത്തകാലം വായിക്കുമ്പോൾ നമ്മൾ പുന്നയോർകുളത്തെ നാലപ്പാട്ട്‌ തറവാട്ടിലെക്കും കൽക്കത്തയിലെ 18 ആം നമ്പർ ലംഡ്‌സ് ഡൗണ് ലെ ആ വലിയ വീട്ടിലേക്കും ഒരു യാത്ര നടത്തും, അദൃശ്യമായി മാധവിക്കുട്ടിയുടെ കൂടെ. ആ യാത്രയിൽ ചിലപ്പോഴൊക്കെ നമ്മൾ തന്നെ മാധവിക്കുട്ടി ആയി മാറിയേക്കാം. മാനുഷ്യബന്ധങ്ങളുടെ ശക്തിയേറിയ ബന്ധനങ്ങളും അതിന്റെ സുഖകരമായ ഒരു വിഷമവും നമ്മളെ പിടിച്ചുലച്ചേക്കാം. കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ ചില ചോദ്യങ്ങൾ നമ്മളെ ആഴത്തിൽ ചിന്തിപ്പിക്കും. സാമൂഹിക ചുറ്റുപാട് ഒരുപാട് മാറ്റം വന്നെന്നു നാം കരുതുമ്പോളും യാഥാര്ഥ്യം അതുതന്നെയാണോ എന്നു നമ്മുക്ക് തോന്നിപ്പോകും. ഒരുതരത്തിൽ യഥാര്ത്ഥ ജീവിതങ്ങൾ ആയതു കൊണ്ടാകാം എനിക്കങ്ങനെ തോന്നിയത്.
