Two great thriller writers, Simon Gervais and Ryan Steck, have collaborated and written
The Second Son,
the first book in a new series featuring Chase Burke. This exhilarating novel takes readers on a nerve-wracking ride full of action, espionage, and plot twists.
Chase is a soldier-turned sommelier, but violence still finds him. His intelligence agent brother, Michael, is killed in a covert op gone wrong and branded a traitor. Then an ambush at the restaurant where Chase works leaves the woman he wants to be romantically involved with, Congresswoman Tanya Hemsworth, struggling to survive. Chase is determined to clear the family name and protect Tanya.
Meanwhile New York Police Detective Alice Doyle and her partner, Detective James Campbell, are assigned the assassination attempt case. James is certain that Chase is part of the criminal gang, but Alice isn’t sure about it. She still has questions.
The book starts with a shocking and impactful prologue scene featuring Michael. Then it shifts to current times with Chase being the primary point of view. There’s a strong sense of unease throughout. The pacing builds to a crescendo that ends with a surprising twist. It’s tense and urgent, reflecting the big stakes of the narrative. However, there was one aspect at the end where things were cleared up, but readers weren’t told how that happened. Additionally, some of the action is over-the-top, but I expected that in this thriller. The scenes were so vivid that it made it easy to picture them and made this reader feel like she was in the thick of things. The epilogue gives a hint that was a total surprise to me. I can’t wait to see where the authors take this series next.
Overall, this was a compelling and emotional rollercoaster full of investigation and suspense. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. Those who enjoy thrillers will likely enjoy this book with its engrossing plot, fast pace, and action.

Do you like the books by Ryan Steck or Simon Gervais? I do. Then it might not surprise you that a book they wrote together is something you don't want to miss. The Second Son is a collaboration between two of my favorite authors and it's also the first book in a brand new series about Chase Burke. What's so special with him you ask? He is a really good sommelier living a quiet life working in a restaurant. Sounds like a great start on a fast paced thriller with almost non stop action, right? Don't let this fool you, Burke has a dark past in the military and a not so great family background. One evening on a rare work free day he is asked to come in and work because the restaurant has a special guest coming. He decides to help out and then mayhem ensues. It is not often that I'm this surprised by a book and although I know that these authors can tell a good story. This one blew me out of my chair. I love the characters and their backstories, the setting and the complications surrounding the story is very well put together. The twists along the way is surprising and the flow of the story makes it easy to read but hard to put down. I have heard from the culprits behind this book that there is a follow up on it's way and that is great news indeed. This one will be available where you get your daily fix in the beginning of December 2025. If you like thrillers you must try this one. I am thankful that Thomas & Mercer and Netgalley let me have an advance copy of one of the best books I've read this year.

l saw this book by 2 thriller writers whose work l've enjoyed and had to pick it up. Chase Burke is currently working as a part-time sommelier. He doesn't need the money, but enjoys the work.
He's at the restaurant where he works when he has to foil an attempt on a congresswoman. From there his life falls apart. The cops investigating the attack seem to think he's involved somehow.
Burke finds himself down a rabbit hole as more and more twists and turns come up.

Chase Burke is a dishonorably discharged PysOps soldier now working as a highly successful sommelier. He is called into work when a high profile politician comes to the restaurant where he works and is caught up in an attack on her. When the cops seem determined to pin it on him, he goes on the run to clear his name.
I’ve read works by both authors before, and I enjoy their writing. This too is a decent book with a main character who is easy to cheer for. However, if you read in this genre, you can see just about everything that is coming. Some of the circumstances are far-fetched, and coincidence plays a big role in the event that kicks off the heart of the action.
This was a good book that could have been great. Overall, it is a solid read, and I hope the series can build on it.

Blood and spilled guts, broken bones, bombs, machine guns, car crashes, helicopters shot out of the sky by surface to air missiles, mothers who coldly kill their sons, corrupt cops, secret Iranian influence, airplanes crashing into mountain sides, assassins, mob hits, torched vans....
Chase Burke is a sommelier who just so happens to always be in the wrong place at the wrong time--and he also just so happens to have secret training in military ops from a past life.
There would be romance in the book if Chase could have just a five minute break from all the shooting.
This thriller has tons of suspense. It is a respite from thinking and credibility--that will do the reader no harm--unlike the respite from thinking and credibility going on in the news today. A break from the real world, but too shallow to be worth the 345 pages. Cut out half the book and I'd raise the rating to a 3. But I don't plan to read any more books in this series.

Ryan Steck is a fantastic book reviewer, but a horrific author
As a fan of the real book spy, I was excited for Ryan Stecks’s first Matthew Redd book, it was ok, but held promise. The follow up book was SO BAD. The parts of this book obviously penned by Steck are equally bad. One dimensional characters, and I’m willing to bet there are adult films with better and more nuanced dialogue than what he typically writes.
Simon Gervais tries valiantly to save him from himself, but he just can’t and Steck’s awful writing style shines through in several portions of the book.
So if you want to to read a book with dialogue that reads like YA, or just dumb and full of tropes, this will work for you. For fans of Mark Greaney, Greg Hurwitz, Brad Thor, Jack Carr, and even Simon Gervais, prepare to be VERY disappointed

Chase Burke is ex-military, now working as a sommelier for his friend’s restaurant. And he has a thing for a member of Congress. When she shows up for dinner, Chase comes into the restaurant despite it being his evening off. And it’s a good thing, as someone wants her dead. Fortunately, Chase’s military training kicks in and he foils the attempt. There’s a lot of action, and confusion about what or who is behind the attempt on her life… and why. As it unwinds, we learn more about the forces behind the aggression and it sets us up for future books in the series. The audiobook is well narrated.

Another solid win from Simon Gervais! This thriller is fast paced with lots of moving parts and plenty of options for bad guys. The twists kept coming and the end was great. The epilogue left the door wide open for a sequel, but not in a way that you will hate life while waiting for it. Add this one to your TBR!

I am totally surprised to find that this is the first book I’ve read by this author. It will certainly not be my last!
This was a fast-paced, heart-thumping, feet-on-the-ground-running…. Type of book!
We open with something that did not make sense to me for a long time…. Until it did!
And then move on to Chase Burke, who is a renowned sommelier, in a NYC Michelin Starred Restaurant.
So…you’d think he’s a sweet, quiet, reserved guy, right?
NOPE! He’s got a heavy duty military background with a family that is not only wealthy, but always in the news!
It’s his day off, but his boss, David, asks him to come in and help out. Chase initially says no, until he learns that a love interest of his, a beautiful councilwoman, is coming to the restaurant. So he agrees. Fingers crossed that maybe, just maybe, he’ll be able to steal a moment away to ask her out!
Instead, shortly after she arrives, the whole situation literally explodes! And Chase is forced into action… being a soldier, right here in NY… instead of a sommelier! With no gun or weapons to speak of!
Yet, when all is said and done, HE’S the one being sought for an arrest! Even though, he’s the only one who tried to stop the whole thing from happening! 😳😮
It’s absurd! And, one of the cops that interviews him is CERTAIN that he is guilty. After all, his whole family is bad…according to the cop!
As an aside, through all of this, Chase is trying to carve some time out to go see his Mom. She is in an assisted care facility with rapidly progressing Alzheimer’s Disease.
This was a CRAZY story with lots of action and constantly changing plot lines… and I enjoyed every minute of it!
Apparently this is the first book in a new series, so hold onto your seats!! 💺…. We’re in for a bumpy ride!!

From soldier to sommelier Chase Burke finds himself dealing with the aftermath of his older brother covert action branded a traitor. His attempts to move his life forward was soon derailed when he is caught in crossfire protecting congresswoman who was dining at the restaurant where he worked at. Question by detectives investigating the shooting, when things didn’t quite add up, they soon had doubts about his heroism and Chase soon became a person of interest. He then went on the run to clear his name and get at the bottom of this mystery…. Enjoy
I simply couldn’t put this story down, both authors are at the top of their game writing this type of thriller. Even with its breakneck intelligent pacing it still offers a deeply human core and insights into loyalty. This book is well worth passing time with. The story is well balanced with high- octane moments and quieter ones.
Chase Burke is a wonderful protagonist well worth rooting for: intelligent driven and somewhat flawed and by far not superhuman, he has bad moments. I loved how he partners with a street-smart NYPD detective to uncover the truth before the shadowy network of mercenaries silence them both.
In whole, this story is a nice blend of action, emotion and family drama. I loved every moment I spent time reading it.

5.0 stars. Really enjoyed this author duo's collaboration. I'm already a big fan of Simon Gervais's books, so this was a no brainer when it showed up on Amazon's first reads.

A wine someelier with the usual spec ops type background finds himself in real trouble when two groups of miscreants make attempts at at congresswoman. One group wants to kidnap her, the other to kill her. Nobody knows what's going on. Our sommelier is on the run from everybody, but there's a friendly cop.
Not bad, really, but the subplot with the mother is really pretty lame.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review The Second Son, by Simon Gervais and Ryan Steck, the first book in a new series. And thank you to the authors for causing my heart to race - over and over and over again.
This one left me breathless on more than one occasion. (I'm a big fan of Simon Gervais, having read a lot of his thrillers over the years; I don't know Ryan Steck as an author, but this was a great intro.)
Plots within plots within plots... that's the premise of this book, and you never really know just who is plotting and why (possibly until the end, but I'm still not sure).
Chase Burke was born into money, but he really doesn't live that life. Right now, he's a Master Sommelier at a trendy New York restaurant, but in his previous life he was military and PSYOPS. In his current job, he's become friendly with a celebrity Congresswoman, and on this night he's hoping to get closer. And then suddenly, he's embroiled in what looks like both an assassination attempt AND a kidnapping attempt which - in the grand tradition of heroes everywhere - he manages to foil. But not before the Congresswoman in gravely injured and Chase himself becomes a 'person of interest' (read, suspect). And it seems that he's being pursued not only by the police but also by the perpetrators!
I don't want to give anything away, and I won't. But let's just say the action never lets up, and Chase leads a pinball-like existence for the next days while simultaneously trying to clear his name and get to the bottom of the plot(s).
Highly recommended.
This one left me breathless on more than one occasion. (I'm a big fan of Simon Gervais, having read a lot of his thrillers over the years; I don't know Ryan Steck as an author, but this was a great intro.)

This is my first time reading a collaboration between these two authors (I'm actually not sure if this just might actually be their first collaboration) but the premise sounded interesting.
We are introduced to Chase Burke who is an interesting MMC. He is - of course- the second son from a prominent family but when we meet him, he has just learned of the death of his brother. The only other family he has left is his mother, who has been quickly declining with Alzheimer's and is in a home for memory care. Unfortunately, she sounds like she was an awful woman who never forgot to take the opportunity to tell Chase what a disappointment he was.
The book starts off with a bang as the restaurant that Chase works at is the site of an active shooter situation and he reacts - using his military background experience - to try to stop the killers. Things begin to spiral from there because instead of being hailed as a hero, he is being considered a person of interest, and it is very clear that certain people want to tie him to this crime. And to make things worse, things actually go downhill for Chase from there.
One thing about this book is that the pacing stays constant and active and the level of tension is held throughout the entire book. Are there moments that defy belief? Well, yes. But, in this genre, if you want to have a good book experience, sometimes you just put those beliefs aside and enjoy the experience. As long as the authors don't take that craziness too far, then the journey is fun and exciting.
All in all, I liked Chase as a character. I also liked Alice Doyle, who is a NYPD Detective who finds herself in the middle of the craziness as well. The end of the book definitely sets up the rest of the series, but for the most part, this particular storyline is wrapped up and completed.

I do appreciate the effort to entertain and the work put in by the authors. That said, I found the motivations, and actions, by the leading characters often to be illogical, ineffective and unfatomable.

Nonetheless, THE SECOND SON is a premier thriller taking a fresh approach to the manhunt, hunter-becomes-hunted action adventure yarn, expertly waltzing through bullets, betrayal, and Broadway--thus second to none.

Second Son is an action filled thriller that pits an ex-military convict with a misconduct discharge turned sommelier against unknown forces out to eliminate him. Chase Burke, sommelier in a Michelin starred restaurant in New York City, is at work when an armed group of men rush in discharging their automatic weapons into the ceiling forcing patrons to the floor. Their target is a US Congresswoman Chase is attracted to, killing her bodyguard, and attempting to drag her out of the restaurant. Chase’s military experience kicks in and he disarms and kills some of the assaulters but one makes it to the getaway van with the Congresswoman. A rifle shot out of nowhere kills the abductor and a second shot badly injures the Congresswoman. So begins a page turning fast moving novel that is a Burke family saga and Chase’s hope for redemption, corrupt police setting Chase up, assassins for hire by a mysterious global cabal with a political agenda, and a deep undercover agent who has Chase’s back.
Simon Gervais and Ryan Stack are two highly regarded authors in the thriller field, now coauthoring for the first time, who have woven together an enjoyable series debut with an explosive and suspenseful plot full of interesting and complex characters. They have created a great character in Chase. One of the great lines from the book as Chase tracks down the Congresswoman’s shooter caused me to laugh out loud: “You’ll kill me anyway,” Bonetti muttered. Chase titled (sp) his head to one side and said, “Tony, Tony . . . I’m a sommelier, not a hitman. I don’t kill people for fun. I pair wines with meals, for crying out loud.”

Thugs from a New York criminal organization, assassins brought in from overseas, a detective and her partner, and a mysterious gunman are either after Chase or protecting him. It’s often hard to tell as the book progresses. That’s part of the fun of Second Son. Even Chase is confused about who wants him dead and who is on his side. All is clearly revealed in the book’s final chapters. The Epilogue however opens another door in Chase’s life and we can expect an action packed sequel down the road. I’m looking forward to it.

A book by either Ryan Steck or Simon Gervais is a must read for me, but put them together and WOW, the result is non-stop action. Michael Burke was on a covert operation that was betrayed. His helicopter went down in the jungle and his body was never found. He is mourned by his brother Chase, a sommelier who caters to a restaurant’s exclusive clients. One of those clients is Congresswoman Tanya Hemsworth, who Chase is attracted to. When the restaurant is attacked, Tanya is the target and Chase uses all of his skills as former military to save her. There are actually two groups targeting her and she is wounded by a sniper. While his boss and some observers call him a hero, the police bring him in for questioning. As one detective accuses him of setting the congresswoman up, his partner, Detective Alice Doyle has her doubts. A later attack in his apartment leaves several people dead and Chase on the run, looking for answers and the people behind the attacks. Chase’s father, a prominent statesman, was killed in a suspicious plane crash, his brother was blamed for the betrayed mission and now he is under attack. The only remaining member of his family is his mother, who is suffering from dementia. For some reason his family is under attack and the only person who he can turn to is Doyle. There is someone behind the scenes directing these attacks but Chase is unprepared for what he discovers.
Short chapters make this story move very quickly and the action sequences have a cinematic quality to them. Chase comes from a wealthy family and he does have a powerful connection that he calls on for assistance. Doyle is a single mother who looked up to her partner until she questioned his reactions to Chase. His ultimate betrayal of Doyle almost ends her life. There is an international conspiracy behind the attacks. Chase Burke served his country in the army. He was part of a PSYOPS team that supported a Special Forces Group. He ended up saving the group from enemy fire. Instead fo getting a medal, he was arrested for an incident and ended up serving time in the stockade. And then he was drummed out of the military.
He has gone on with his life and made money by investing in a start-up business. He also has become a sommelier in a high=tone restaurant in NYC. Then he gets word that his brother has been killed in a covert operation to free hostages being held in Colombia. Earlier his father was killed when his plane hit the side of a mountain. Violence has hit his family hard.
He gets a call asking him to come into work. He is told a female congresswoman is coming in for dinner. Chase has a special feeling for her and comes in. And then of all things, an ambush happens in the restaurant. There appear to be two separate groups one trying to kill the congresswoman and one group trying to kidnap her. As it turns out, she is badly wounded.
Chase sets out to figure out what has happened and what he can do about it. At the same time, an NYPD team attached to a terrorist task force is called in to assist with the investigation. The team consists of an older cop, James Campbell, and a younger woman, Alice Doyle. She is a single mother with a young daughter.

If you love geo-policital thrillers starring an ex-military force turned upstanding civilian, add this one to your list. Chase Burke enjoys his quiet life as a sommelier at one of the hottest restaurants in New York, though he’s got a lot going on behind the scenes–romatically interested in a NY state rep; mourning the recent death of his super star big brother as well as the death of his father years earlier; a black sheep trying to be the dutiful son to a mother in a memory care facility; and managing a post-military life after being dishonorably discharged for a bogus crime. Chase gets called to the restaurant on his night off by the chef and owner once it’s known that his love interest has dinner reservations that evening. Not wanting to miss the chance to see her, Chase reports to work and in short order the restaurant is sieged by masked gunmen looking to kidnap his love interest. It soon becomes an active shooter situation, and Chase’s training kicks in, setting off a chain of events that will bring together all the seemingly disparate parts of his life and culminate in an ending that sets the stage for the next book in the series. All while being targeted as the main suspect in the attempted abduction and avoiding the police while he tries to solve the mess and prove his innocence.
All in all, I liked the main character and I find him to be a compelling hero. I look forward to reading what comes next in this ongoing saga.

The Second Son, by Simon Gervais and Ryan Steck, follows Chase Burke, a sommelier, former soldier, brother, and son to a mother who struggles with her memories. Recently, after his brother died in a military operation, Chase continued to visit his mother in her facility. Still, more often than not, she doesn’t remember him or confuses him with his deceased brother, her favorite. One day, he is called in to the restaurant to help pair wine with the meal of a congresswoman he has feelings for. The meal takes a turn when the restaurant is attacked, and the congresswoman is shot, barely holding on. Chase stops the would-be kidnapping, and to everyone there, he is a hero, but to the NYPD, he is a suspect, and to the attackers, he is a loose end. Chase struggles to clear his name, stay alive, and find out exactly what happened that night. The more he digs, the more danger he puts himself and anyone helping him in.
I loved this book. I have read previous work by both authors and thoroughly enjoy the pace and writing of this story. The action and suspense are well written, keeping the reader engaged and able to visualize the scene. You feel for the struggle of Chase as he tries to circumvent this journey, who his friends and foes are, and the loss of his brother and his mother’s mind. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good action thriller.

Terrific new thriller!
Chase Burke is leading a quiet life as a sommelier at a high-end restaurant in Manhattan. The former soldier recently lost both his father and brother, and his mother is in a facility suffering from Alzheimer's. One evening at the restaurant, a Congresswoman Chase is friendly with, comes under attack. Chase draws on all his former training in the ensuing battle, but he becomes a focus of the subsequent investigation. This sets off a mad string of events that crash through his life and sends him on the run. He realizes that there is a conspiracy, and he doesn’t know who to trust except one police detective.
Ryan Steck and Simon Gervais have written an engrossing thriller, which I hope will be the beginning of a new series. It is full of twists and turns, unknown combatants, and a global shadowy organization reaching the highest levels. All of which are perfect elements to keep the thrills coming. I am not surprised by the great writing in this novel, as I have read previous books from both authors, and this is certainly the level of detail and excitement I have come to expect from both. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy Gervais’s Clayton White, Steck’s Matthew Redd or Jack Mars' Jake Mercer series.

I am grateful for an early copy of The Second Son from NetGalley to read and review.
I am new to Simon Gervais, having just found his Elias novels. I have read all of Steck's Matthew Redd novels and was excited to read this novel.
The Second Son is a great collaboration between these two authors and gives us some memorable characters. Chase Burke is a grieving man, asked to come in to work one night and ends up saving the life of a congresswoman.
Instead of being hailed as a hero, he is vilified and goes into hiding, forced to clear his name on his own. With multiple parties after him, unsure who he can trust, he essentially goes it alone to learn what is happening and why he was suddenly thrust into the middle of it all.
With great writing we have come to expect and tense scenes, this book does not disappoint. I enjoy novels that have their scenery described in such a way that I am taken to those places. The way the characters are written, the things that they are put through, all combine to give us a great story.
The main protaganist, Chase, has his own struggles, but is able to work to clear his name. The story progresses nicely without huge leaps and the decisions of the characters make sense.
I look forward to the next in this series.

The book opens with the death of a US State Dept anti-terrorism analyst. UH-60a Black Hawk, shot down in Colombia. The chopper burning at over 2,500 degrees. Everything incinerated. He was the Burke family's "first son", killed while working on a covert mission with the FBI and the Colombian National Police. A leak is suspected. The first son is posthumously branded a traitor.
New York, New York.
An Upper East Side scion, working as a sommelier —a sideline for him, as it were, at one of NYC's most exclusive, Michelin-starred Chrysalis, gets unwittingly drawn into the affairs of a congresswoman, one he barely knows, as she gets ambushed and accosted by armed men with bad intentions while having dinner at the restaurant.
Shots are fired. People die. The congresswoman, in serious condition, gets hauled off in an ambulance. The sommelier, in turn, finds himself as a person of interest, and gets taken into custody for interrogation by the NYPD. After questioning, he is released.
Events take a turn, and he, Chase Burke, sommelier, second son and scion of a former investment banker turned diplomat, ex-soldier discharged dishonorably with a two-month stint in prison at Leavenworth, finds himself in the crosshairs of a global crime syndicate.
The same one, it appears, involved with the death of his brother, Michael.
