Apart from the female characters that were quite flat and the commentary on women's nature that sometimes left me unsure of whether it was satirical or not, I really liked this story! Elias was a wonderful character and it was interesting to read the thoughts, motives and intentions of the people who lived close to this 'God's fool'.
This is an old story. As with stories from long ago, 18-something, there is an undertone of morality. Right triumphs at the end. The how left me scratching my head.
Elias is no fool. I must read this again, it's been 18 years...I suppose that's what happens at half a century in the aging process..I never used to feel compelled to reread books..especially when there are so many I want to read for the first time..alas these are like old friends who I feel a need to revisit and refresh my memory as to why I loved these particular books.
Ik heb de Nederlandse vertaling gelezen. Maarten Maartens was een Nederlander maar hij schreef in het Engels omdat hij in Engeland woonde. Dit boek kan ik iedereen (die van goede historische fictie houdt) aanraden.
