Love in Eden #2

His Cowboy Heart

Rate this book
Jules
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I entered the small town of Eden, Wyoming, but I can easily say that being accosted by a few thugs in a dirty alley because I had a modicum of fashion sense hadn’t been high on the list of possibilities. Growing up in Manhattan probably should have prepared me better, but it wasn’t like there was a sign posted outside of Eden warning me to ditch my Mongolian wool wrap and dark nail polish. Sure, I knew I’d get some looks of disgust, but I’d always had a snarky remark at the ready. Unfortunately, snarky only worked when you weren’t having the crap kicked out of you.
Enter the kind of hot cowboy I’d been fantasizing about since, well, forever, and within seconds the ignorant bigots were stumbling out of the alley, and I was alone with my gorgeous savior. Only problem was that said savior was under the assumption that he’d been rescuing a damsel in distress.
And I was definitely no damsel. A fact that Hot Cowboy didn’t realize until after he’d kissed me.

Flynn
Eden was supposed to be another small town just like all the others. A place to do some temporary work on one of the local ranches before moving on. It wasn’t a life for most people, but it’d been working for me. With the exception of my horse, I liked being alone.
A dusty, garbage-filled alley changed all of that. Helping someone who was the victim of a serious beating wasn’t a big deal for me. The victim was a big deal. As soon as I locked eyes with the person I assumed was a woman based on the clothes and nail polish, I was a goner. As confused as I was about my attraction to her since I played for the other team, she kissed like a dream. Only she wasn’t a she at all.
The young man in my arms did something to me with that kiss. I was both relieved and disappointed when the guy took off. In the long run, it would be good because the last thing I needed was an intense attraction to someone who clearly didn’t belong in Eden.
Enter Black Hills Ranch and a familiar stranger who wasn’t very happy to see me.
At all.
Jules, a New York city boy, was an enigma but that didn’t matter. I wanted him. Even though we were like night and day, arguing with Jules was just as much fun as kissing him.
It was also very dangerous. For him. For me. The last thing I could afford was to fall for a guy who’d never truly be mine. I had to let him go. It was the right thing to do.
Then why did it feel so wrong?

His Cowboy Heart is book two in the Love in Eden series by Sloane Kennedy. You can read this as a stand alone. It’s been five years since I read book one, Always Mine, which is Brooks and Xavier’s story. I had forgotten a lot but some of it came back to me as I read this. I do want to say, though, that in the first half of this book, Brooks and Xavier are going through what they experienced in their book. So the stories are running parallel. It might be easier to understand everything if you’ve read it. I might have done better if I re-read it.

Now, it’s Jules and Flynn’s turn. Jules is Brooks PA. They both work in New York but when Brooks left to go to the Black Hills Ranch in Eden, Wyoming, to help his Uncle sort the finances of the ranch, Jules could tell by their conversations that Brooks needed him, that something was going on. So he also packed his bags. Who knows, maybe he’ll meet his own hot cowboy.

But, things didn’t start out well when he was in Eden, before he had even gone to the ranch. He was dressed perhaps a little flamboyantly and was attacked in a dark alley by three thugs. He was rescued by a cowboy straight out of his wildest fantasies. Only, there might have been a bit of confusion due to the way he was dressed. So of course, Jules ran away. Only for the two of them to come face to face a few days later when that same hot cowboy shows up at the ranch for his new job.

Flynn and his horse/best friend, BJ, were going to spend some time at Black Hills Ranch for a temporary job. He hadn’t even made it to the ranch yet, was just passing through Eden, when he came upon what he thought was a woman being attacked. His immediate reaction to her confused him because he most definitely was NOT straight. But when they kissed and their bodies came into contact, he realized his mistake. But too late because the man disappeared. No one could be more shocked when a few days later he reported for work and found himself staring into those same beautiful eyes.

Little by little these two danced around each other. Slowly they shared truths about themselves. Both of their histories broke my heart. They might have seemed like opposites on the outside but they really weren’t. Jules history especially made me sad. I thought it was awful the way he let people treat him in the past just because he craved attention. And I loved the way he was such a care giver.

The thing that bothered me about this was that it was filled with both lack of communication and miscommunication. There was so much these two could have shared with the other but instead, they just withheld their truths. Eventually, they do begin to share but so much trouble could have been avoided if they just talked.

The ending was super cute, epic even. That part is movie worthy. Over all, it was a sweet, steamy book. I just often felt frustrated. And I do believe you would enjoy it more if you read the first book. I loved that one by the way.

Just TALK to each other! I am a big fan of Sloane Kennedy’s writing but this book is not what I hoped it to be. Why oh why didn’t Flynn talk to Jules about his panic attacks? Maybe not during but after? And why did Jules take them so personally? Just ask! “ Babe, what’s happening here? Are you not interested in me or is something else going on?” See? Not that hard.
And why not just communicate after you leave? It did not make sense. Just a lot of made up drama and narcissistic behavior. Such a shame. Because the first book in the series was promising.

Not going to reread. And I don’t recommend it either.

missed the mark

I couldn’t get into this book at all. The cruel way Jules was treated made it hard to like Flynn at all. It was almost too late by the time it was explained. It just seemed rushed and the angst was cruel with no background glimpses as to why, and I honestly didn’t care if they even ended up together.

This book had zero emotional depth which is a SHOCKING thing to say about a Sloane Kennedy book.

The characters were pretty much thinking about sex, talking about sex or actually having sex 100% of the time. 🥱🥱🥱🥱yawn.

It was bizarre and insta love. Like WTF. As a result, I didn’t care about either character and now I’m super meh on ever reading this author again. I’ve almost always found her to be a 5 star ⭐️ read but this was not good. Ugh. 😑

After waiting for 6 years, it was not what I had hoped for. The plot was thin and characters not developed. Both characters were emotional eunuchs. Neither fought for their love. TBH they both deserved their unhappiness. This book was SO ugh 😣 the final act was complete madness. Completely a waste of time. Don’t bother.

It's ... a bit all over the place. The author introduces us to the 2 MC's and it definitely seems like this entire book was written from page to page without any thought to see if the story made sense.

Compared to book 1 I'm highly disappointed but I do remember liking this author in the past. Everyone's hit or miss at some point and you can't even love ALL of your favorite author's books.

I found that there was so much unnecessary inner monologue but not enough explanation of the main characters past which has SO much to do with the end.

This book is as if the author kept writing and seeing where it took her rather than having any sort of plan or plot.

3 is the best this train wreck would ever get from me.

Alright, first, I HATE Jules!
Omg Jules was the WORST! The entire book long! With NO CONSEQUENCES or REDEMPTION! Wtf?! Poor Flynn deserved wayyyy better. So did Brooks. Jules ruins the entire book. Though, I’ll admit, Flynn was not great at communicating. Their entire relationship was forced and uncomfortable. They had ridiculous misunderstandings because they were both too childish to explain their thoughts and feelings as well as listen to the other on the rare occasion they tried to talk. The 3rd act breakup made NO SENSE and came out of nowhere. The reconciliation was even more nonsensical. What a train wreck. I had such high hopes, too. What a disappointment.

I've no idea what has happened to this author with this and their last release--Proof, Targes Executive Protection #1--but it almost feels like it's not the same person writing Sloane Kennedy books anymore. Or editing them. I had the exact same issues with both books: overly dramatic, nonsensical and erratic feelings, exaggerated conflicts, excused lack of consent or "non-verbal" consent...and the list goes on.

I don't know about other readers, but I am absolutely not here for that nonsense, and this author has gone from an insta-buy to a never-again-buy just like that.

What just happened???

These two characters were a mess for the entire book. Jules is extremely unlikeable throughout. He's self-centered and overreacts to the smallest perceived slight. This was okay-ish in the beginning, but it actually never changes.
It's insta-love and somehow also insta-hate at the same time?
Miscommunication trope to the max.
The third act break up was out of the blue and very poorly explained.
The chemistry between the characters? Off the charts. But in the negative direction.

Two stars for Flynn's horse, BJ.

Sloane Kennedy is an auto-read author for me, but this was just a miss. It lacks the character and plot development I usually find in her books and I could not have cared less about these characters.

I was ready to love this one as Sloane is a favourite author of mine but it didn’t hit right for me. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s so long since the first book released but I can’t remember what happened. There seemed to be quite a lot of crossover from book 1.

I felt that there was too much back and forward and then suddenly they’re in love, I needed less angst and a bit more explanation.

Jules was a bit all over the place as a character and Flynn was pretty mean to begin with.

Little disappointed 😢

Jules, a stylish New Yorker, finds himself out of place in the small town of Eden, Wyoming—especially when his fashion choices make him the target of local thugs. Rescued by a rugged cowboy, Flynn, Jules quickly realizes his saviour assumes he's a damsel in distress. That misconception lasts only until they share a kiss. Flynn, a drifter working on a nearby ranch, is accustomed to solitude. Saving a stranger from a beating should have been inconsequential, but Jules is anything but. Despite initial confusion over his attraction to Jules, Flynn can't deny the pull between them. Their connection deepens when Flynn discovers Jules at Black Hills Ranch. Though they are opposites in every way, their fiery arguments are just as electrifying as their stolen moments together. But the risks are high—Jules doesn’t belong in Eden, and Flynn knows he shouldn’t fall for someone who might never stay. Letting go feels like the right thing to do. So why does it feel so wrong?

This was an enjoyable story with the two men who met in dramatic circumstances but were also unsure about each other. I did find their relationship to be mostly physical and lacking in other areas as it was confusing if they loved each other or not. I did love Flynn's horse BJ who was very intelligent and had a starring role. Easy to read and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.

This book is as bad as the other reviewers say it is. I quit like... I don't know, 75% in. It was just nonsensical. When I use that word I mean it doesn't make sense. It was all over the place, there was so much sex, and it was so boring. I left pretty much the same review for her last book, and one of her fangirls got all upset about it. But listen, whether you're a fangirl or not, this is not a good book. I don't know what has happened to this author to make her books so unreadable now, but she is not the same author I used to read 5 years ago. The books need to be more plotted. We need exposition, rising action, a climax, falling action, and resolution. Nobody wants endless exposition with nothing happening. Nobody wants to read that. It's not interesting. The story needs to be going somewhere. This story went nowhere, and the developments that did happen in the story were out of the blue with no buildup, which makes them seem illogical and nonsensical. Seriously, let's see some plotting.

His Cowboy Heart is the second book in the Love in Eden series written by Sloane Kennedy.

What to expect:
*MM romance
*Horse whisperer
*Found family

This is the second title in this series and follows along very closely with the first book. Parallel timelines and crossover characters, it is highly recommended that readers start with the first book to avoid confusion.

With that being said, this book was very hot! The spicy scenes were excellent! I wanted a little more from the story though, the characters just seemed to fall into fall without any conversations or background information. Some of the time jumps in the book were a little weird also, I got confused at the end that there was just a sudden change in the relationship.

No OW/OM drama, no jealously. Does have a third act breakup. Ends with a HFN.

Format: KU ebook

For 50% of the book, they are cruel to each other, but then suddenly they are just mates for life out of nowhere. I would have loved to hear more about Jules trauma and Flynn working through his issues.

I'm so disappointed because usually Sloane Kennedy delivers very interesting stories with mental health rep, but this one just wasn't it.

Enjoyable in places but very disappointing at points

I do love a bit of rancher romance but to be honest this book could have been set anywhere. If it wasn't for BJ's character there would have been little ranch like about it. The author became so caught up with the 2 main characters that little else featured making me bored on many occassions.
I felt the main characters were quite immature, constantly walking away from each other before having an honest conversation. Tbh it was as if the author needed to string out the story which wasn't as interesting as the first installment.
I do get frustrated by people writing stories on subjects they don't bother to research. Ranching is gritty hard work and can be very interesting, yet the author barely involved any other characters or aspects of actual ranch life within her story.
When the main characters weren't rambling off on an inner monologue they were fucking in the barn with little in between. Not much dialogue th and Jules had the potential to be a hugely funny and entertaining character.
The idea of that prized horse traipsing all over the country carrying 2 full grown men without sustaining a sore back or other injury was quite frankly unrealistic and crazy. No body that loved their horse would subject it to that.
More research and gritty storyline next p!ease author, even the constant kinky sex when they EVENTUALLY got it on (without an actual proper discussion about Flynns panic attacks) became boring after a while as did the constant walk outs. Effort to finish it. Sorry.

Always Enjoy a Sloane Kennedy Book

I was drawn in from the first chapter and as this is a Sloane Kennedy book I was expecting angst and I wasn’t disappointed. The two main characters, Jules and Flynn were complex personalities, total opposites. Jules is small, pretty and femme and Flynn is a nomadic hot cowboy who only ever stays at a ranch for a few months at a time. His best friend, only friend is his horse, a beautiful grey Australian Waler who was named BJ by his niece and nephew!

There was chemistry between them from the moment Flynn rescued Jules from a beating in a dirty alley and kissed him, thinking he was a woman. When they find themselves face to face again it’s to find they are both staying at the same ranch, Flynn as a ranch hand and Jules staying with his best friend and boss Brooks. Brooks is having problems with his partner Xavier and Jules rushed to console his friend. We met Brooks and Xavier in book one.

Jules and Flynn had an on and off relationship, they both were keeping secrets and Jules had a habit of exploding and running off before Flynn could explain.

I enjoyed the book but I would have liked to know a bit more about Flynn rushing back to New York and the court case, I could also have done with a few less sex scenes. I did enjoy the ending and I absolutely loved Flynn’s horse BJ.

story of Jules and Flynn

This is an opposites attract to more romance, featuring Jules and Flynn, and is book two in the Love In Eden series.

When Jules arrives in the small town of Eden and gets attacked in an alley, he’s unexpectedly rescued and kissed by a rugged cowboy - who assumes he’s saving a woman. Flynn, a loner drifting from town to town, is shaken by his powerful attraction to Jules, and as they clash and connect at Black Hills Ranch, both men must confront their differences, desires, and the risks of falling for someone who might not stay.

This is a slow burn, we meet both Flynn and Jules in book one and this story runs along the same timeline. There was a fair bit of push / pull between these two, they just can’t stay away but once they give in they both help each other heal from the past. Loved the HEA.

Things to expect in this book are:
Book 2 in series
MM romance
Small town
Opposites attract
Fabulous Fem x Drifter cowboy
Mistaken identity
Rescue meet-cute
Hurt / Comfort
Living with past trauma
Neurodivergent themes
Slow burn
Push / Pull
MC in lingerie
Spicy times & dirty talk
3rd act breakup up
Reconnecting
Found family

🌶️🌶️🌶️

Jules was attacked by 3 idiots because he was dressed femininely and wore makeup. Flynn heard the commotion and intervened. When he looked at the person being attacked, all he saw was the beautiful green eyes. And he couldn’t resist kissing them. Then Jules spoke up and he realized he was a he.

Later when he reached the ranch he was to be working at, he saw Jules’s car parked outside the house. When he entered, he saw a person carrying a heavy load of wet laundry and went to take it out of their hands but the hands held on until they tumbled down the stairs. It was Jules again.

Jules thought Flynn was just another man who saw a feminine guy and was curious enough to peruse him. But Flynn is gay. Each time they have an encounter, Flynn satisfies Jules but pulls away before he can finish. He has a heart condition and is afraid he is going to have another heart attack if he has too much pleasure.

There’s a third act breakup 🙄 but they eventually make their way back towards the ranch after a lengthy pit stop in NY.

I have no clue who the next book will center around. I don’t think we met anybody new?!?

Going to a temporary job at Black Hills Ranch, Flynn saves Jules from a bad beating in an alley. Thinking Jules is a woman, Flynn kisses him then realizes Jules is a man. He backs away. The two meet again at the ranch. Jules is there to help Brooks (see book 1) with Uncle Curtis' bookwork. They do not seem friendly to each other but when they are alone, Flynn kisses Jules again then backs away. Jules is ready to write him off. Flynn is attracted and lets Jules knows it is not him, but Flynn. Will Flynn ever let Jules know why he keeps backing away?

I enjoyed this story. There is a lot of emotion and angst in this story. I liked both men but Flynn did drive me crazy with his always backing away after a kiss. When he finally reveals why, I understood. I was glad Jules could help him through his panic. When they break-up, I'm glad BJ (the horse) was smarter than them both. It was over the top at the end but I think they needed it or neither would have opened up to what the other meant. It works.

I'm sorry to see this series end.

Let me get this out of the way: this book is filled with miscommunication. However, 90% of the reason for this miscommunication is trauma response, and that had me sobbing. Both Jules and Flynn have experienced significant trauma, and this trauma is slowly revealed throughout the novel, although, unfortunately, the fears and responses this trauma yields are not understood by either MC until extremely late in the novel. They are also isolated on their journey, which bothers me, especially because Jules doesn’t value his friendship with Brooks as much as Brooks values it. Flynn could probably lean on his family, but there is no indication he contacts them. As such, both are alone to deal with their trauma responses because they can’t (or won’t) talk to each other (Yes, more miscommunication). However, they both learn that the trauma response is not, in some way, appropriate (trying to avoid spoilers), and all comes out in the end. I’m satisfied with this book, but I like psychological things.

There were parts of this story that I loved and others, not so much.  Parts that were good for me included:  Jules' fabulousness (his sense of fashion topped off with the makeup); BJ (who truly was the star); moments between Jules and Flynn that took my breath away; and though slightly far-fetched, Flynn's mode of travel to see the states and to get to the climatic scene.  What I had trouble with was the level of angst.  My threshold is pretty low for that, so I found the back and forth without clear communication annoying.  Misunderstandings are real, but the way some characters repeatedly don't explain or don't listen is a personal button that breaks me out of their interaction and/or story.  Even with that, this is a solid 4 stars for me, and I will look for the next in the series.

It held my interest more than book 1 in the series, but the whole thing was bewildering. It's like halfway through she decided that a PA wasn't what she wanted. No, she wanted a millionaire! No, a billionaire! So a billionaire that is disguised as a PA. Who stupidly puts himself in spots where he'll get beat up. Who apparently knows everything about everything his company owns though he never works there. In love with someone (cowboy, Appalachian poor boy) who has panic attacks at the thought of the word "hospital" or the act of sex (??) Until the billionaire takes them. I guess that's what billionaires do. Then the horse (smartest of the three) finds the hidden billionaire in New York. Because he ran away (panic attack?)
