i have been reading this book for a few months now and it is the longest book i have ever read. aside from the obvious mystery at the center which is really interesting, what really impressed me was the characters; rakesh, pooja, shalini, atif, karthik, bindhu and many more. i really enjoyed all these characters. the most important part of this murder mystery, for me, is how celebrity culture exploits people through the reactionary media environment. lack of nuance, projecting internal insecurities, having no grace for others, gossiping about real people's personal lives and etc... the way people have been reacting to each news coming out is soo painfully similar to how it would be in real life.

this book wouldve been one of my all time favs if not for that ending. im going to give the author the benefit of the doubt and assume she wanted to give a bleak or atleast bitter sweet ending but she just rushed a little bit. the politicians behind the crime werent caught, mira had to fake her disappearance and let go of priyanka and the most egregious of all pooja had to go back to living with her rapist husband.

as soon as i read that final epilogue i was soo angry thinking that story was trying to redeem sanjay but looking back there are some clues for how pooja doesnt like the situation she is in.

i think im dissapointed because i was actually expecting a "and they all lived happily ever after"-esque ending but i didnt get that so its one me i guess? but in my defense the story had a light tone to it throughout, there was a lot of jokes despite the very bleak premise, so i was expecting a complete resolution with pooja divorcing that rapist and becoming independent through her podcasts, rakesh getting his honor back, madhu gets exposed for being the worst human on earth and all the main characters meet with mira but that was just wishful thinking. this ending isnt bad. it just needed a couple more chapters of falling action i think. i kinda wanted to spend more time in this new status quo.

bindhu hated rakesh to his guts for most of the novel(and it was soo hilarious) now i wanted to see how she would react to what her husband was doing this whole time, pooja loosing her bodily autonomy by getting raped is what finally pushed her to get out of sanjay's house and now she is back with a baby we still dont know is she wants or not; what is that like, not to mention sanjay and d are connected to that child trafficker. that whole instagram live fiasco, what happened after that? what happened to that podcast? what exactly is mira doing? it was almost 450 pages of build up of characters and events and all of that in concluded in like less than 5 pages. i genuinely wouldve loved to see a more expanded conclusion.

what really pangs my heart is thinking about mira. she wanted to get rid of madhu from her life only after she found out what he was going to do to her daughter not when she was subjected to physical and mental abuse from him for years. women never taught to put themselves first. now she is living in a whole another secret life and had to give up on her daughter all together. its just soo sad to think about it.

anyways, i spent 4 months on this novel. its soo embarrassing. i hope i can get back on my reading groove and finish this year's goal 🙏

I’ve watched many films that stretch unnecessarily, this is the first time I’m reading a book that is stretched so much that beyond a point it just became unberable. A book that should have finished in 250 pages stretched to a 480 pager
