One, two, they took what's mine.
My little lamb was stolen from me.

Three, four, blood on the floor.
The monster she awakened has broken free.

Five, six, death's favorite tricks.
My darkness hunts relentlessly.

Seven, eight, feel my rage.
Hell itself bows down to me.

Nine, ten, kill again and again.
Each death brings her back to me.

Eleven, twelve, straight to hell.
Where screams ring eternally.

Welcome back to your darkest nightmare.
I am Death, and they've stripped away my mask of mercy.
My little lamb, I will paint the streets red until you're safe in my arms again.

“Back in the Shadows” plunges readers deeper into Death's twisted realm, where love and violence dance in perfect harmony. This isn't just a story—it's a descent into beautiful madness, where the line between protector and monster blurs with every heartbeat. Once you've stepped back into the shadows, there's no escaping their embrace.

International bestselling author J.A. Owenby grew up in a small backwoods town in Arkansas, where she learned how to swear like a sailor and spot water moccasins skimming across the lake.
She finally ditched the south and headed to Oregon. The first winter there, she was literally blown away a few times by ninety-mile-an-hour winds and storms that rolled in off the ocean.

Eventually, she longed for quiet and headed up to snowier pastures. She now resides in Washington state with her hot nerdy husband and cat, Chloe (who frequently encourages her to drink). She spends her days coming up with ways to torture characters in a way that either makes you want to throw your book down a flight of stairs or sob hysterically into a pillow.

J.A. Owenby writes new adult and romantic thriller novels. Her books ooze with emotion, angst, and twists that will leave you breathless. Having battled her own demons, she’s not afraid to tackle the secrets women are forced to hide. After all, the road to love is paved in the dark.

Her friends describe her as delightfully twisted. She loves fan mail and wine. Please send her all the wine.

Holy crap, there’s so much to unpack in this story.
Back in the shadows we go as their safe domain has been breached and Ella has been taken, kidnapped right out from under Sebastian’s aka Deaths nose.
Waking up in a glass cage, the room she’s in is underground, some kind of basement, the guy that’s her keeper is as unhinged as they come, but there’s one that’s a lot more dangerous than him and he’s this guys boss. He may be even deadlier than Death.
Tick tock, time is of the essence, she needs to be saved and the only one that can really save her is Death.
...“ɪ ʀᴇᴀʟɪꜱᴇᴅ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ᴍʏ ᴡᴏʀꜱᴛ ꜰᴇᴀʀ ʜᴀᴅ ᴍᴀɴɪꜰᴇꜱᴛᴇᴅ.
ɪ'ᴅ ᴘɪꜱꜱᴇᴅ ꜱᴏᴍᴇᴏɴᴇ ᴏꜰꜰ, ᴀɴᴅ ɪᴛ ʜᴀᴅ ᴘᴜᴛ ᴇʟʟᴀ ᴀɴᴅ ᴍʏ ꜰᴀᴍɪʟʏ ɪɴ ᴅᴀɴɢᴇʀ.”

To unravel the cryptic messages he's been given to save Ella, he has to go back in time to where his childhood as he remembers it began and that's the place where all his nightmares of his parents murder occured.
I felt such huge sadness for Sebastian in this one, imagine your closest friends keeping such big secrets from you, always left in the dark, migraines and time missing slowly start to make sense as those lines become blurred between Sebastian and Death as they collide within one mind.

I didn’t realise that this had become a series after reading the first book, but not one complaint by me, I loved Death and Sebastian all over again. 65451226-2019570151487824-6157464638251335680-n

OMG I love Death, I love Sebastian, I love Ella, I love Kip, I love Dope and I Love Ryan ! I just don’t love Cami anymore, I lightly like her, that little bitch 😂

I read the first book last year thinking it was a standalone, imagine my surprise when I saw this one and now imagine MY SURPRISE AGAIN when I read the Epilogue that is NOT in the book and you have to download and found out this is a series and that are more books coming ! OMG I CANT WAIT!
This book managed to be even better than the first one, the storyline left me at the edge of my seat the whole time. I felt for Sebastian in here 😩 but he finally came to grip and understood the situation. Everyone here is so on board and so amazing, I can’t even believe this is actually a series. I will be happily waiting for the next book. Can’t wait to see that stupid bitch Xavier get what he deserves and also can’t wait for Death to deliver the well deserved pain to the Pied Piper ! 😤

Holy plot! So much story!

Weird to say i liked book 2 the most!

The character development and background story kept me engaged the entire time. Perfect amount of smut without taking away from the storyline.

The ending killed me because it ends on a cliffhanger and the story will not continue on their pov. I understand why the author did what she did but i thought we would get a conclusion at least for these two characters and the revenge they deserved.

This book picks up where In The Shadows left off, so you need to read In The Shadows first. It will be worth it. This book is more twisted and dark, if you can believe that. And trust me it is.

It's hard not to give anything away when saying how great this book is, so I will just say read it!!! You won't be disappointed.

Thank you to The Author Agency and author J.A. Owenby for the opportunity to read this ARC 💕

FMC - Ella: 3🌟
MMC - Sebastian/Death: 4🌟
Spice: 🌶🌶🌶🌶

Likes: This book has very twisted and psychological aspects to the plot, which I enjoyed! And I found the mental conflict between Death and Sebastian interesting

Dislikes: I will preface this by saying that it's been almost a year, I believe, since I read the first book. With that in mind, I had no problem picking up the story where it left off. However, I didn't like the writing and plot as much as I did in book one. In fact, I started to gradually lose interest in the second half. The twists in the end, to me, just didn't feel right or felt like too much of a reach

P.S. - This book is definitely not for the faint of heart, so please check the trigger warnings 😋

So much for responsibilities and being an adult. This book released and I thought I would just read a little before starting my weekend! NOPE. I was sucked in!! I thought in the Shadows had me on the edge, but this book showed me what that really meant. I felt like I understood the characters and where they were coming from and I couldn’t decide where my loyalties were. If you’re looking for a book with spice, suspense, and wanting more, this is the one!!

What a twisted little web J.A. Owenby weaved for us. What you thought you knew in the first book has now been put into question. What happens when Death and Sebastian finally collide? Read the second book in this series to find out! I really enjoyed the ride and still have questions I need to be answered. That being said, read this book!

Love Sebastian and Death. Ellie has her hands full with trying to get those two to finally come around and accept each other. The twist in this I was not expecting at all, any of them actually. Lots of plot with plenty of spice especially when Death is around 😏.

It's been a few days since I finished 'Back in the Shadows' and I still don't understand what the hell happened??
I absolutely loved the first book, I literally devoured it in a day and a half and it's definitely one of my favorites in the DR genre. BUT THIS?! I've never, ever experienced such a downfall in.. everything.

It's as if the author herself forgot how to write, which is why not only the writing style was so bad here, but the horrible and unnatural dialogues?? Plus - don't get mad at me - but repeatedly ending a chapter with an unfinished sentence and THREE PERIODS is simply the style of expression of elementary school students or teenagers publishing on Wattpad.

Moreover, I also disliked the main characters here. Ella wasn't exactly the smartest in the previous book either, but here it was on a completely different level. I started to really hate Cami too and Sebastian... Omg, why the hell did he become such a weak, whiny weakling? Only Death didn't disappoin, he was amazing as always, but unfortunately he didn't get enough pages and simply couldn't save the whole book by himself.

Finally, I have to say that the spicy scenes weren't worth much either. The one/two with Death were hot as before, but the ones with Sebastian were downright boring.

So I ask again: what the hell happened?!
3/10.

I know I can't give much of a review because of the giveaway factor of what the books are about.

Definitely read Book 1.
I can tell you this the Suprise plots in both of these books will have the hairs on your arms raising and tingling. This book is going to put a chokehold on your brain.
The characters have such a bonding chemistry.

It is all so surreal. It will draw you in and feed a side of you that you didn't know existed. It's going to make you have feelings for characters you shouldn't have feelings for. She is that good

You will love it.

Is there a Chef Kiss button? YUP! For this book there is.

Omg!! This one deserves it.
This is the continuation of In The Shadows
Will it be the end? Please read it and find out.

J.A.Owenby is like a fine wine. Her writing just keeps getting better and better as she writes.

F@@k !!!! I love this book.

I will be sitting on the edge of my seat for this book to be released .. I want this book in my hands to have forever!!!

Leaving you with something to think about!

**ARC Review**
This is the 2nd book in the series. To understand what's happening read, the 1st book in the series, In The Shadows.

It took me less then a day to finish the ARC I recieved. THIS BOOK IS SO FREAKING GOOD!!!

Im usually a romantic comedy reader, although i read dark romances on occasion. This book has everything! Great spicy scenes, a few comedic moments, suspense... i honestly was hooked from the moment I started reading. I thought I had everything figured out after reading the 1st book, but the author threw in twists and turns around every corner that had me wanting more.

My only downside was I was sad that this book ended because I want more!

This is book 2 and seamlessly follows the first book, In The Shadows. I thought the ride couldn’t get wilder than the first book this time around but Owenby said “here hold my beer.”

This dark romance will consume you right from the start and good luck wanting to put it down. Owenby did a phenomenal job at mind altering with this one. This story had it all — the intricate plot, the complexity of the characters, multiple POVs, and the plot twists that will have you reeling. And let’s just add between the tension and the spice I don’t know which had my blood pressure up more. This is another page turner that will have you wanting more. Here’s to hoping there will be another book to help connect some of the pieces we may be missing or needing more detail. This can’t be the end, it’s just too damn good!

The story/writing: I loved this continuation of Ella’s and Sebastian’s story. It was action packed, full of twists and turns, and mind boggling reveals and other interesting surprises! It’s gory, bloody, and straight up deprived in some places but that’s what made this book so enjoyable :D One thing that stood out to me most was the endings of some chapters. It was an interesting way of making an ending. Example: His identity was not what it seemed, and he told me his name was… (next chapter). I personally didn’t enjoy reading the chapters endings like that, but it didn’t deter the story in any way! BUT THAT ENDING????? UHHHH MS OWENBY THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED AND I DEMAND A REFUND (JKJK lmaoooo BUT DAMN DID IT MAKE ME SLIGHTLY ANGRY HAHA) It’s comes to a semi-satisfying conclusion, but I think that the next few books coming out in this series will be worth the wait:)

The characters: Watching the relationship between Ella and Sebastian grow was so beautiful to watch. They were such a cute couple in the first book, and I love how the second one just went into depth. The second book focused more on Sebastian’s history and where he came from, but it is still multiple POV, and follows a plot line that is a mix of plot driven parts and character driven parts:) Their love for each other was obsessive in both directions and I LOVED how that was done!! There were also some VERY loathsome characters, and I don’t say this lightly. Fu*k. You. Fiona. ANYWAY!

The spice: I rated this a 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️.5 on the spice scale. There were about 7 and a half open door scenes (the .5 being a masturba*ion scene). These scenes had elements of toy play, rough sex, possessive sex, and other sexual content. BUT DAMN WAS IT THE GOOD STUFF 🤭 I think the scene I liked most was (in the most spoiler free way) when the papers were found… I loved that. And I also loved the praise. Oh my god the amount of “good girl”’s is amazing and I couldn’t get enough!! There are darker scenes that do include a 💀 body, but nothing is done to the body. There is no necrophillia.

Thank Ms Owenby for giving me the opportunity to read this and I hope to read more in the future!!

It was such a treat to dive into this world.
This book grabbed me, it held its ground & had me flipping pages like my life depended on it. Sebastian, Death, and Ella, I just love them. There’s something about their dynamic that just gets me. This one was a little less spicy than book one, but honestly? The emotional depth made up for it. It was raw, brutal, and beautifully twisted.
The vibe of this book is not for the faint of heart. It's for the ones who crave those obsessive, teeth-baring, heart-ripping stories. If you're a sucker for morally grey men and fierce heroines who won’t go down without a fight—this one’s for you.

Ummm the end??

Overall I loved this series. The reason for the low rating is not because I don’t want others to enjoy the turmoil as much as I did, it is because I’m left with so many more questions than answers after the ending and epilogue.

How do you say that is the end of their duet when he came back!?!

When I found out that J.A. Owenby was releasing a sequel to In the Shadows, I jumped at the chance to for an ARC! I was so excited to read more about Ella, Sebastian, and Death. I read In the Shadows last summer and it has stuck with me ever since. Back In the Shadows will live rent free in my mind now too. Their story starts over a year after the end of the first book. Ella and Sebastian/Death’s twins Alaric and Verity, are 9 months old. They left Portland and are living in upstate New York. Death discovers Ella has been looking into who murdered his parents and he’s furious. No time is wasted before the spice and action start. Dope calls Death when he notices something is wrong at Ella’s house. Death finds the house ransacked and Ella missing. Dope calls the guys, Kip and Ryan. Ryan brings Ella’s best friend, Cami, along to help watch the kids. Things get complicated when Sebastian emerges before they arrive and doesn’t know what is going on. The guys have to explain to Sebastian he has a darker side, Death, because they need his help hunting down who’s responsible. They explain that Death is a serial unaliver and they’ve been helping him all these years.

The way Sebastian and Death fought for dominance was written so well that you never questioned they were different characters. There are creepy riddles and confusing clues that make you keep turning the page to figure out what’s going on. Ella is intelligent, strong and fearsome character. Sebastian and Death have very different personalities but they agree on one thing, they love Ella and their children. Sebastian is loving, caring, and gentle but with a fierce need to protect his family. Death, well he’s an unhinged serial unaliver, brutal and an @$$h*le.

This is one of the darker romances I’ve read so be sure to read the trigger and content warnings on the author’s website. There were a few scenes when Ella is being held captive that I had to speed read through. There is no question that there is romance. The love Ella has for Sebastian and Death and they for her is written in such a a way you can feel it jump off the page. The ending left me wanting more and with so many questions.

Thank you to J.A. Owenby and The Author Agency s for the privilege to read an advanced copy of Back In the Shadows.

(**no spoilers or plot leaks** )WOW what an emotional ride this book was, You get hooked straight away! I enjoyed every page. Death is back with a bang…and he has one thing on his mind, his Little Lamb. The lengths he will go to save and protect her and the children, just shows he does have a heart after all🖤 And it only beats for them!

JA Owenby wrote Sebastian completely opposite of Death in every way…but you do see a few things bleed through. Sebastian has to come to terms at some point with his other side. The turmoil he goes through is hard for Ella to watch, but her strength will pull him through and only make them stronger!

Ella is so strong, she has Sebastian and Deaths back at every turn. She loves gentle, but she craves pain. I wonder how Sebastian will accept this?? Ella will do anything for her family, and when it’s crunch time she doesn’t let the side down! She is the missing puzzle!

There’s a lot to unpack when you read this book, but there’s also a few twists and turns, a few deaths and a few plot twists….and of course the spice…epic! This will have you reading well into the night (I know from firsthand experience!) please check the trigger warnings!!!

Everyone from the last book is in this book, so make sure to read the 1st book…..does book 2 end on a plot twist or cliffhanger??…you’ll have to read to find out!!

Book 2 in the Shadows duet DID. NOT. DISAPPOINT!! This book had my attention from the start. I don't know why I waited so long to read this one even when it was one of my most anticipated reads! You have to read In The Shadows before this book. It still follows Ella, Sebastian, and Death (Sebastians' other personality), but it's Sebastian/Deaths past coming back. It all starts with Ella getting kidn@pped to draw at Death, and while she was captured... she went through such psychological and emotional abuse that my heart ached for her. She held her own and stayed strong so she could get back to her kids and Sebastian/Death. The ending of this book. WHAT? I've never had so many unanswered questions! It did end in a HEA, but my questions for WHO THE HECK the Pied Piper is isn't answered! I swear I better get them in the next book. Make sure to read the bonus epilog! Please check your TW before reading. Your mental health matters!

“In the shepherd's tales, darkness always devours. They never tell of how it cradles, how it crowns its lambs with stars.”

There is legitimately nothing I can tell you without dropping spoilers. Shit hits the fan by 7%. J.A. Owenby put Knuck If You Buck on the JBL and popped off.

Daddy Death is BACK! And the details, y’all. Every little breadcrumb from book one? It matters. The plot? More cohesive than Gorilla Glue. The chemistry between characters? So good I thought I was third-wheeling. The tension? High. The stakes? Higher. My blood pressure? Through the roof. I screamed “WHAT?!?!” so loud it set off the glass break alarm in my house.

To thoroughly enjoy this series, please do the following:

1. Read In The Shadows.
2. Read Back In The Shadows.
3. Harass J.A. Owenby on a daily basis to write more books for the series.
4. Lather, rinse, repeat.

10/5 stars. I hope I get head trauma amnesia so I can read it again for the first time.

So this was such a fun ride. It’s been some time between book one and book two, but it really picked up exactly where the story was left. AND—I got closure to my painstakingly unanswered questions from book one. AND NOW…there’s more left unanswered. OYE.

I loved the mental struggle and dialog between Death & Sebastian and I thought it added a bit of depth to their characters. I was utterly convinced Owenby would break my heart, but hallelujah I can breathe. And Ella…oh SO sweet until she wasn’t anymore—really came into her UNsweet character in book 2.

I’m a little unsure if I’m okay with this being the “end” of the Ella/Sebastian/Death story, but color me intrigued with the synopsis for the next interconnected story.

This is book 2. Make sure u read In The Shadows 1st. This book starts where that one left off. Make sure u read TWs before u read this book

Ella and Sebastian continue on with their love for each other. Death appeared again, and he is just as unhinged as he was before. I love how gentle Death is with his 9 month old twins Verity and Alaric. Some men took Ella, and Death would stop at nothin to get her back into his arms and their lil family. To get their back stories and understanding the characters better was epic. I absolutely loved this book, and it does end on a cliffhanger, and I can't wait to read more of everyone.
