Charlie Rhodes' life has taken a turn. Not only is she working her dream job, but she’s also taken on a dreamy co-worker and is officially dating the office security chief. Yeah, she’s still trying to wrap her head around it, too. She doesn’t have much time because a high-profile incident in Florida means the team is on the hunt, and this time the likely culprit is none other than a prehistoric shark that’s been extinct for millions of years. For Jack Hanson, the mere thought that a Megalodon is hunting the Gulf of Mexico waters is too much to bear. He’s on edge and irritated, and that’s on top of the fact that legacy foundation co-workers are starting to find out about his relationship with Charlie.
For her part, Charlie is enjoying herself. Not only is she looking for a giant shark, but she’s investigating in the middle of an author conference and the victim was the one person hated by absolutely everyone. She’s learning on the job…and it’s a tangled web of lies and intrigue to wade through. There are suspects at every turn, blood in the water, and hungry sharks looking for a meal. It’s another fun-filled adventure, and the stakes in this one are graver than anybody anticipated.
When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail. Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.
Although I like the series overall, I felt this story fell a little flat. I felt as if parts of this was a rinse and repeat from other series the author writes, and that the inclusion of the relationship was being forced - as if the characters are being made to act a certain way now that their relationship is starting that isn't really how they've been developing as characters so far.
And it seems that the writing reflects this when Jack constantly has to reassure Charlie about the things he likes about her. Honestly, it's become a constant theme in the author's writing. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but I think when it appears in every single book of every series - it starts to get a little old.
Don't get me wrong. I'm glad Charlie and Jack are getting together - the chemistry is definitely there. But I think it feels like it's following more the Landon and Bay relationship rather than developing on it's own.
Will still continue the series, though. I have hopes it'll get better. :)
This book is my Jam! I absolutely loved it, starting with Charlie (Charlene) Rhodes. She's recently out of college, a bit awkward, and totally adorable... and out on a first-date, when the book starts. And, second, she's working in her dream job as a, ummm, crypto-zoologist so essentially a monster hunter (I happen to love cryptids) and the third and best part is Charlie (and the group she works for) is investigating the suspicious death of an author, possibly from a Megalodon attack, at a writers conference! Let me say, I love books that take me to conventions and workshops about books and writing. While investigating this death, it turns out the team discovers that no one, absolutely No One is mourning the writers untimely death! Furthermore, everyone who's attending the conference had a grudge against the deceased. The number of "Easter Eggs" mounted as the story progressed, from actual author's names and pseudonyms, to events that may have actually occurred in the real world (the names being changed, of course)... all the while showing us a darker side of the indie-writing business (no, no you get no spoilers from me)! The fact that Jennifer Jill Araya was able to narrate this story without cracking up shows me that she's serious about her craft! That or the cut and splice buttons were used effectively... LOL So get the lighthearted cozy mystery. I'm sure you'll be as baffled as I was by all the plot twists and turns as they hunt for the killer, or maybe it really was a Megalodon!
Another winner. Loved the characters and the way that the romance is unfurling plus Laura is an absolute gem. Talk about a manipulating, conniving and ruthless baggage. Plus the plot certainly had me fooled until the end with enough twists and red herrings to please any mystery reader. When a body is found with strange shark teeth markings, the team soon find themselves heading for the area. As the teeth size does not match any of the living shark size. Could it possibly be a Megalodon? As the team look into the author's death they discover that there is a list of suspects a mile long of people that might be responsible. The author had been responsible for victimisation of other authors leading to ruined careers. Throw in a new romance, a green eyed monster, sharks and a conference full of authors and their egos for a great read. Can the team solve the case? Was it a shark? Or was the perpetrator human? Can they fight the jealousy in their own team?
I have really enjoyed the prior books in the series. In this one the h has been turned into a passive, ineffective female following the controlling, demanding male. He constantly asks her where she has been, what has she been doing, tells her where to go and when to go there. Worst of all, she complies. I want the independent, creative non-conformist back!!!
Amanda did it again! I love this series and I'm hooked! So, Charlie and Jack finally got together and they are going on their first date! Its soo cute and sweet I love it! But, back when they get back to work they have a new case! So they try to keep the new relationship on the down low but as things do when you want them to stay on the down low it ends up blowing up when Laura finds out and she wants Charlie to get fired for breaking the rules. So, while that is going on they are investigating a death in Florida. The death looks mysterious because the woman that was killed just happens to be one of the most hated women at the authors convention that is going on at the hotel as well. What will happen will Charlie have to say good bye to the new career she is loving? Will they find a once thought to be extinct shark? Will they find out what happened to the woman who was found killed? This is a another great one and will have you guessing until the end! I cant wait to read the next installment of this series!
Sweet and predictable cozy, another very light read. She chose a writers conference setting and dished on the likely gossip / stereotypes from that setting. Made her other pen name an author character here.
Team Legacy head for Florida and the mythical megalodon when one of the authors, Shayne Rivers, at a convention turns up dead in the water looking like a victim of Jaws. The teeth marks however are far bigger than any living species of shark and Chris is determined to prove that the long extinct Megalodon is hiding in plain sight despite being 60 feet long and capable of swallowing her whole as a mere snack.
Lee plays her hand beautifully in this one, bringing the world of writers to life with tongue in cheek glee.. the feisty and funny Lily, cheese and cat obsessed Sarah, preppers Clark and Carter, JD who's followed by his knitting crazy wife, Leslie the crazy stalker, Priscilla and Abigail hangers on. Every one of them and plenty more besides had good reason to wish her dead but whose reason was enough to make murdering her a worthwhile risk?
While the investigation heads in two decidedly different directions Charlie and Jack are trying to keep their budding relationship under wraps.. will they give the game away or will someone try to force their hands?
Charlie Rhodes returns for an interesting mystery with only a very faint connection to the megalodon of the title. That’s unfortunate, because the last book in this series really caught the groove of exploring the supernatural while walking that line between Charlie and the reader knowing the supernatural is real, but the team not ever being able to prove it. We came nowhere close to that line in this book. Despite Chris, the team leader’s passionate desire for a sixty-foot megalodon to have been responsible for a hotel guest’s death, no one reading the book will believe that for a moment. And that hurt the story. On the few occasions when a megalodon entered the conversations, it felt like a weak attempt to justify the title and pretend that this book had something to do with the abnormal.
And that’s a shame, because Ms. Lee did offer a good mystery set at a writer’s convention and centered on a group of hilariously petty, frequently horrible, people who attended the convention. We can only hope that she didn’t base any of these characters on real people. This mystery was credible, but it would have been better in a different series.
A wonderfully humorous mystery, with a dash of kooky romance and a little magic.
I am loving getting to know Charlie Rhodes, Jack and all the gang with the exception of Laura, nobody wants to know Laura or get to close to her just in case you catch a huge dose of the Nasties...lol but Laura does add to the humour level I'll give her that.
I do love that Charlie is settling in more with the team and her new job I also think Jack already suspects she is more than she seems and I don't think he will have a problem with it at all but that's all for future stories.
A Megalodon Murder was the mystery for Charlie and the team this time around, could a pre-historic predator really be out in the ocean just waiting to kill people? or was it more a human element? I really loved the mystery side of this story having a writers conference in the mix made for a lot of fun and lots of suspects. I also loved the 'banter' between Jack and Chris over whether a Megalodon had resurfaced...lol it was funny especially when both these guys are beyond stubborn...lol
This book was amazing. I truly loved reading it. It follows Charlie as she travels with her entourage to investigate a suspected Megalodon attack. A woman body is found ravaged by sharks in the sea. Complications arise when everyone hated her. she was a truly horrible person. Charlie and Jack are slowly embarking on a relationship but decide to hide their changes equation. Things get messy when the relationship is discovered by a member of their team. What does this mean for their new found relationship? will they discover a Megalodon caused the death of the woma n or is there another explanation for it? I loved how my favourite author, Lily Harper Hart makes an appearance in this story. I loved Charlie interaction with her. I was intrigued by Jack as he was different in this book compared to the previous books. He was more light hearted and more jovial with the acceptance of his growing feelings for Charlie. Fab book and series. Can't wait for the next book.
Even though I saw the movie The Meg and I liked it, I wasn’t excited about this monster hunt. Plus, Jason Statham had a lot to do with why I liked the movie. It ended up being fun b/c even though they were hunting a gigantic shark, they hung out with book authors. There was a writers’ conference at their resort. The comments about and from the authors was hilarious and it makes you wonder how much of this that Amanda M. Lee had experienced. The author also introduces you to one of her pseudonyms and now I have to try out that series. I will try it just b/c I respect the marketing technique. Jack is still unnecessarily rude and bossy at times but, he is not as bad as Landon from Wicked Witches of the Midwest. Jack and Charlie are going off on their own a lot so, that is less exciting. Not sure why charges aren’t pressed against Laura. Also, something needs to be done with her character. Unless something dramatic comes up, she needs to be replaced. We get it. She is a narcissist and crazy jealous
This one didn't do it for me. It felt like the characters kept asking the same people the same questions over and over. Every time she was eavesdropping on people, they just happened to be talking about something she needed to hear. Her relationship with Jack is progressing but she still does some really dumb things. For example, making a big deal about just walking a short distance away and how he can still see her. Then she almost immediately walks around the corner to the bathroom thinking that if he doesn't see her, he'll just come find her. No wonder he doesn't trust her to do what she says. He is becoming a little overbearing with the protection and coddling though. The mystery was pretty good. Basically, able to guess who the killer was but not the reason and details behind it all.
I liked this a lot. I am looking forward to when Charlie decides to tell about her ability, and to see if her powers start to grow. Was good to see them come out with the relationship and to see Laura get a bit of what she deserved but she hasn't really gotten all she does. As usual Millie is fun though she took a back burner to some of the authors. Thought it was fabulous that Amanda M Lee used her Lily Harper Hart identity. Entertaining in all kinds of ways with that addition. ?Is that how she pictures herself or just that character? I have read some authors take on slightly different personalities when under a pen (different) name. Highly recommended as I do all her books under both names.
I have really enjoyed this series so far but this story is my current favorite. I love Charlie Rhodes. Sometimes I want to slap her "upside her head" just for the numbskull things she winds up getting caught up in. Jack the Skeptic is very good. However he does go overboard when yelling (mostly at Charlie) that chupacabra, Bigfoot, werewolves, and megaladon don't exist makes me want to smack him silly. Gratingly and superiorly declaring that you're right and everyone else is living in Lalaland, is an insult to those that believe or want to believe..
NOTE to AMANDA LEE: The titles of all your books are genius! I got such a fit of giggles reading them I'm sure my husband questioned my sanity.
Wonderfully hilarious and tongue in cheek (?) insight into the world of authors. Charlie and team attend the murder of an author at a writer's conference, based on the fact that it might have been the extinct megalodon due to the size of the bite marks on the body. Whilst the supernatural link was weak in this story, the fun of the characters more than made up for it. Also Charlie and Jack start to explore a relationship and they are super cute, although there is one team member who is more than put out and would like to cause trouble. I did not see the actual murderer coming until Charlie did which always adds to the reading enjoyment. Looking forward as ever to the next outing.
I like this series about Charlie Rhodes who goes around with a group of investigators searching for evidence of any kind of supernatural beings. Charlie herself has precognitive and kinetic abilities that she is hiding from the group as she searches for her own answers to her unique skills. In Megalodon she and her group infiltrate a writer’s group where one of their own has been eaten by a large predator (a Megalodon?). One of the author’s pen names is also one of the authors at this retreat which makes for some inside and tongue-in-cheek jokes.
Amanda M Lee is a new all time favorite author. She has a way of drawing you into a book and getting your feeling involved. I can't wait to read the next one in this series. I love Charlie Rhodes and all of the other characters. I can't wait to read more of this series and how she gets other characters from other series into the mix. Can't wait to see where Charlie goes next.I have never laughed and cried reading a book as I have reading hers books. The only other Authors that have manged to do that are Nora Roberts, JD Robb, Catherine Coulter, and Richard H. Stephens. Would love to find more that can do that.
I read it from start to finish, I couldn't put it down. I really enjoy this new series and can't wait for Charlie and Jack's next adventure. And the rest of the gang of course, lol. The only disappointment was that Charlie didn't kick the crap out of Laurie for shoving her off the boat. At the very least they should have fired her. ( then they could beat her up). LOL!! Or throw her to the sharks, now that would have been fun. Rotflmao. Keep the great books coming. One of my favorite authors.
And exceptionally funny and entertaining series. A great cast of characters written with heart went in a bit of sarcasm. A supernatural investigation team chasing around the country after all the different supernatural sightings. Kind of like one of those TV shows. They look for Bigfoot werewolves mega sharks chupacabra and who knows what else but they look for if they hear about it. A very interesting team one of them is even a little bit supernatural herself she has psychic in Connecticut abilities you won’t be disappointed check it out
Ms. Lee never fails to impress me and I look forward to reading any book from her various series. This once has a young woman hiding her paranormal abilities while working with a special investigative group looking for paranormals. I just hope Charlie doesn't drag out not telling her boy friend (who is the main skeptic on the team and security manager) about her talents. Marine veterans can handle the truth any day; lieing by omission is a deal killer however and unforgivable. Hopefully it will happen in book 4!
Charlie Rhodes never met a mystery she didn't like, especially if it potentially involves a mythical or extinct perpetrator. In this story, the bad guy is supposedly a megalodon shark. I wasn't sure how that was going to play out because so far in the series all of the potential perpetrators have been "real" they just didn't actually do it. And they were land based. While there isn't actually a giant megalodon swimming around in the story, how that little inconvenient fact gets handled is somewhat surprising and entertaining.
I loved this book and the quirky writers represented. Charlie and Jack take things further, Chris is delusional, but sweet. He did display some backbone which I loved. Laura is a huge problem as usual. During this book, the crew find themselves in FL at a writers conference to research an apparent shark attack, from a very large predator. So many funny quips in this book.
I love Amanda Lee's books. They are always well written with great characters and very engrossing. I'm very fond of Charlie, she was less of a dingy in this book. I can't stand Laura, the fact that I hate a made up character speaks to the writing. This series should be read in order. Each book builds on the last. The mystery was great, I had no clue at the end!
This is the 4th book in the Charlie Rhodes series I've read. It has taken me 4 nights !! I hesitated to even read the first one because I love the series with Bay, C!ove, Thistle, and especially Aunt Tilley!!! I'm so glad I started
So far I have been up until at least 4 in the morning reading . I am absolutely fascinated with your abilities to continue to put out such books. I wish I had that talent. Keep up the good work.
I'll give this book a 4.5 rating. I didn't know who "done it" until the very end.I am impressed that the author could keep so many characters straight. I've read too many books with multiple chagracters where the author forgets who is who and mixes up names. I am a stickler about grammar and spelling and only found one small mistake I like how the characters are developing as the stories progress.I will recommend this series to my friends and family.
Okay, gonna be honest. I was enjoying this story until the author wrote herself into a minor role that just completely through me off any time she entered the narrative. If not for that it probably would have been a 4 star read (the Laura tempest in a D cup thread is really beginning to take off), but instead I just wasn’t a fan of the self insert.
Charlie and her group were on another adventure in Florida. Looking for a giant shark that was extinct back in the prehistoric days. The megalodon was what Chris thought for sure that killed a woman in the water. There’s a lot of adventure a lot of togetherness for Chris and Hannah and Charlie and Jack. Even find out something about Millie in this one. Laura is her usual self.🐬
I really enjoyed this book, I like reading books that make me smile and help me relax and have found Amanda M Lee and Lily Harper Hart books just do that. I love the fact that Charlie meets Lily Harper Hart in this story and starting to see romance between Charlie and Jack. If you enjoy characters with attitude, snark and sarcasm then Amanda M Lee books are for you. I’m steadily making my way through her collection.
A Fantastic Read Amanda M Lee spins a great story. She never disappoints. Charlie and the Legacy Foundation are a complete group of characters. The snark is the very best part of the stories. Because it makes the story real life to me. I can't wait for more of Charlie and Jack💗
