Great summary of many common yoga moves. I love the "Yoga flows" section at the end, where it gives you a TON of series of positions to do for various "flows" or workouts. My only suggestion is to get the physical book instead of the Kindle version, so you can easily flip through it :)

This is an excellent book for those who want to create their own yoga sessions that compliment their athletic endeavors. I pre ordered this from amazon a long time ago so was very excited to get it in the mail. I don't know the author or his previous work so this was new to me.

I've been doing yoga a little while and I consider myself a newbie. I frequently use yoga to enhance my running and for cross training. There are times when I know certain areas of my body need some help, I'm particularly tight in an area or (like now) I've got an injury. That's where this book comes in very helpful. It is sorted by type and then you can also see what areas of your body the pose affects. It's great to have so many variations available on poses - and gives a lot of variety. There are complete sequences in the back for you to go by with varying routines. In general I prop it up and then just use a routine or I create my own by practicing the poses and then just writing them down (title) to jog my memory. The book lays flat pretty easily and I find myself referring to it and Sage Rountree for much of my yoga needs supplemented with the 30 Days of Yoga with Adrienne (free on youtube and highly recommended!)

Men's Yoga! FOR BOYS!

For the first fifteen or so pages, the dude desperately tries to persuade you that yoga is not, in fact, just for white girls with frappaccinos, but also for athletes of every gender, including "Superbowl Winning Team The Seattle Seahawks". You ever see the black label yogurt that has the huge NFL logo on it so everyone knows you're still manly? It's sort of like that.

I feel like his effort was wasted. If I'm already reading the book, you can assume I've come to terms with my feelings vis-à-vis gendered yoga, huh?

After that debacle it's a helpful breakdown of various power yoga poses with accompanying pictures and a bunch of flows (routines) in the back that I took cell phone pictures of because if you think I'm gonna drop $30 on a yoga picturebook you're out of your goddamn mind.

I am so disappointed in this book, and I'm thankful this isn't the first book on yoga I've read. First, I couldn't find any legitimate yoga credentials for the author, which is extremely evident in this book. The author does not seem to have any authority on the topic. Furthermore, there are exactly zero outside sources used to back up his claims for the benefits of yoga in general and each pose individually.

The beginning of the book only lauds yoga and doesn't offer a balanced view of yoga. It's a sales pitch. While page 12 encourages readers to "listen to your body," it gives little instruction for avoiding injury, especially in each pose, which I find not only irresponsible, but dangerous.

I do appreciate the caution about not using mats outdoors exposing people to insects and allergens. That was useful information.

The "anatomy" offered is insultingly rudimentary and non-specific.

The poses are presented with poor alignment cues and the photos show models with wrong and potentially dangerous forms.

Some of his information doesn't even make sense. For example, "You may thing these are only for runners, but they're for anyone who wants to run faster." I believe I would call those people runners.

The last ten pages are useful, associating poses with specific sports. You can pretty much skip the rest of the book.

Power Yoga for Athletes (PYFA) is a well-written book, but is severely lacking in terms of safe posturing and anatomy. In the majority of photos, models are in improper alignment (ranging from ineffective to potentially dangerous). Additionally, posture cues are sometimes inappropriate and regularly lack and indication for what adjustments should be made to ensure safety.

However, I believe there are some strengths to this book. The muscle groups targeted by each posture are accurate and serve as an excellent visual for those seeking to target a specific muscles. Additionally, I like that each posture comes with an icon of "sports it benefits" with a complete index of postures per sport. The suggested sequences are appropriate and safe, and the overall readability is great.

I recommend this book as a reference to those who can take his models and cues with a grain of salt, but want a good resource for the types of postures to teach yoga to athletes.

P.S. I got a hearty chuckle out of "Spiderman Virabhadrasana".

This is a great book for anyone who has wanted to try yoga, but is skeptical. Helpful explanations, and specific recommendations for athletes of specific sports. I think American men have a prejudice against Yoga, but it is great training and I know this could help change their mind.

Good reference book but maybe this info is better presented in video form, or in person. Would like more material on what *not* to do, to avoid injury in certain poses.

it's a great book! Sean should consider adding routines for weightlifters etc. as well and maybe provide digital posters of each flow.
