An inspirational collection of one-of-a-kind sewing projects from The Makery.
Makery: Sewing is the latest craft book from Kate Smith, owner of the thriving Makery sewing café workshops. Now she's been busy with her needle and sewing machine to bring you a collection of 30 sewing projects spanning highly original fashion, gift and home ideas.
Create and wear tailor-made fashion items such as the beautiful Smocked Purse and Skinny Bow Belt. Alternatively, give loved ones a gift with a truly personal touch, such as the Man's Wash Bag or easy Lipstick-Holder Keyring. Or add originality to your home with creative accessories destined to become household favorites like a Padded Oven Mitt, gorgeous Table Place Mat or a colorful Doorstop.
Makery: Sewing is suitable for beginners and is very user-friendly with clear instructions, time guidelines and handy tips as well as required tools lists to guide you through the techniques with ease. The book includes stunning full-page photography and pull-out patterns and templates, plus there's a chapter dedicated to stitches to ensure that you sew your way to success.
One of the few sewing/craft books I've seen that include practical projects that can actually be used and aren't silly - like patchwork steering wheel covers. (Yes, really!)
This is a lovely craft book with lots of nice ideas to make by hand or on a sewing machine.
What I particularly like is that a lot of the patterns can be made with small amounts of fabric, and as a fabric remnant hoarder myself, it's nice to have some easy ideas where I can use the fabric up.
I'm going to a couple of weddings this year and quite fancied a new fascinator to go with my outfit but they can be rather expensive to buy instore. The 'Corsage Hairband' in this book is a lovely idea and one I will be making. There are at least six other ideas and patterns I like the look of so will be giving them a go when I get some free time.
The book is beautifully laid out and the instructions easy to follow. As I read this on a digital platform, I didn't see the pattern pieces included at the back of the book but there's nothing here too difficult that I couldn't free-hand draw, and all measurements are included. Also included at the back of book are some useful explanations for 'stitches and tips'.
This would make a lovely gift for a novice at sewing and something I would buy for myself.

I was lucky enough to have gotten a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a review which I am happy to provide. It has been a long time since I did any sewing and I just got a sewing machine so I thought this book would be great to get me started again on some simple projects. Not only is this book beautifully put together, with some full page photography and projects for beginners/advanced sewers, with easy and clear instructions, lists of all the material you will need and approximately how long it will take to complete . It also has a whole section with stitch and tips information which is very handy. The book has some creative gift ideas, and I might not find all of them to my liking, but the book got my creative juices flowing and I can't wait to get started on my first project.
I have another book in the Makery collection so was really looking forward to reading this one. I wasn't dissapointed! I love the clear and concise instructions in these books that make it easy for a novice like me to get my head around. There are some lovely projects in this book complete with patterns. I felt very inspired after reading this book and I can't wait to get started on some of the projects. Lovely photographs, details of all equipment needed and an easy reading style make this the perfect book for me as it has everything I need to get started. A fabulous book which any home sewer will love!
I've had some ambivalence to Makery books in the past but this is easily my favorite. The projects are simple to execute but in the details prove their worth. Some projects include shower caps, a laundry bag with a hoop, and a well described smocked bag (very cute). Smith doesn't assume you are machine sewing nor does she assume you have a huge warehouse of fabric/notions and most of the projects are flexible or have tips for substitutions. Even better, most of the projects do not require yardage so they're ideal for beautiful but expensive fabrics.
This book is great, I love the different ideas that it has through fashion, gifts and home, they are very detailled and give you ideas on how long the projects should take you. It also has a handy guide to the equipment you need for each project plus the stitches and a how to guide for them. The photos are so clear and the instructions are really easy to follow. Its a lovely book. I received a copy of this book from the publishers via netGalley in exchange for an honest review.
nonfiction/sewing projects. Some nice ideas in here (with instructions). I like the pajama shorts (didn't have time to make them); I did make use of some scrap material and threw together the door stop in under an hour (didn't use the instructions, but the pattern is fairly self-explanatory). All the projects seem pretty quick so this might be a great gift for a beginning sewist.
Some really simple sewing projects in here, several of which would surely spruce up a home. Sadly, none of these inspired me to want to do anything. Been so long since I've last sewn a bag though. Perhaps I'll do something soon. I like the idea of using a leather belt for straps on a tote bag.
