He soon learns of the free people of color and the hidden town at the foot of the mountain that could be his sanctuary. He also finds himself drawn to the promise of redemption. But will his demons, both real and imagined, rob him of the chance? Can love survive the racial tensions between Annabelle and him post-civil war?Miss Kitty is what they call her. However, her Christian name is Cora, and she runs the saloon and whores of Nicademus. Escaping New Orleans and the chains of a placage, she has founded a home and thriving business in Nicademus. However, the unwanted desires of the town’s sheriff, her passionate affair with her Chickasaw lover, and the new threat of the dangerous man who hunts her from her past all collide in Nicademus and threaten to destroy her. Red Sun, Chickasaw, and the lone survivor of his tribe out of White Rock Mountain, trusts no one. He brings the orphaned Annabelle and himself to the town of Nicademus for a chance to start again. Ten years later the bitter memory of his slain people keeps him locked in the past. However, his new love affair for his ‘soiled dove’, Cora, keeps him sane. Nicademus is his home. He will risk it all to protect the town and the woman he loves. In 1866, a town run by freed slaves, called Nicademus, is the promise of the future. The story of the town and the passionate, dangerous, and infamous exploits of its citizens are still whispered from the lips of people today. This fictionalized tale reflects some of their story. You will search for truth in it.

I love Sienna Mynx's books. They are very character driven and unique. I've never read an interracial western before, so this was a treat. This was a story of forbidden love between a free African American woman (Annabelle),surviving in a closed minded world, and an outlaw (Jeremy)hiding from the man who murdered his family. After Annabelle finds Jeremy half dead on her property, she takes him in and nurses him back to health. Jeremy admires Annabelle's fierce attitude and independence. Jeremy starts out as a pet project for Annabelle to practice her nursing skills on, but after getting to know him more, her attraction to him grows. Neither of them knows what the future holds for them, so they take advantage of the time they have together. Both find something in the other that makes them want something more than a life of loneliness and monotony. Annabelle opened Jeremy's eyes to a new way of living and introduced him to a world that was more "brown" than "white". Jeremy proved to Annabelle that skin color doesn't determine what's in a person's heart. He made her see he could love her no matter the color of her skin. They become a united front against Jeremy's enemy, even knowing they could be killed in the process.

The secondary characters were a lot of fun too. Annabelle's father was a silent, homicidal giant, her coworker was a knife wielding murderess whore and her mother figure was a formidable, outspoken Madam that nobody dared mess with. I love how this author makes sure each character has their own voice. I've read other books where some of the characters feel too similar. Each of these characters stands out and could have a book of their own. I could totally picture this book being made into a movie.

Sienna Mynx has done it again!

Set in the post civil war west this is the story of Jeremiah and a Irish outlaw looking to avenge his family that was slain at the hands of a ruthless rail baron named Shep & Annabelle, an African American girl who dreams of becoming a nurse.Annabelle finds the outlaw when he stumbles in the town of Nicademus, shot and nearly dead.she nurses him back to health and they fall in love, which is very dangerous for both of them. Then you have Annabelle's adoptive father a Native American named Red Sun who is in love with the town Madam Cora aka Ms.Kitty.they try to warn Annabelle about the dangers of a relationship with the outlaw who is being hunted by Shep, a ruthless racist man who wants the outlaw dead and has ties to other members of this special multicultural town. This book had it all, a super sexy outlaw , a big sexy Native American, strong women, super hot sex, and a great story and premise.I love the fact that the story was set it the 1800's a dark and dangerous time for interracial relationships, but this story was just great and the way Ms.Mynx writes the characters conflict and pain over their relationship just took me there.I loved it.keep them coming!

This book was right up my alley. There was drama, intrigue, outlaws, villains and lots of hot sex.

Annabelle was a free woman of color living in a town settled by blacks post civil war. Nicademus was founded to bring all types of ethnicities together working in harmony, however it was majority black.

Annabelle had a unique upbringing, being the offspring of a runaway slave and a free man who lived among Native Americans. When her family and the entire village was slaughtered, Annabelle was adopted by Red Sun who raised her as his own. He built her a log cabin, with her assistance, and she lived on her own on the outskirts of town.

She wants to be a nurse and works hard at her training with the local doctor. Her skills come in handy when she finds a wounded white man by the river. Her instinct is to save him, but it goes against the rules of the town, so she hides him in order to practice her skills. Of course saving his life, sparks a passionate romance between these two.

It turns out the man she saved was wanted by the law for a crime he did not commit. Jeremy is being hunted by an evil railroad mogul who killed Jeremy's family just to steal their land and gold. Jeremy returned home from fighting a war that he was forced into to find he was alone in the world.

Things get interesting from there. The townspeople are threatened by the mogul, old wounds are opened for several characters in the book and the town must face their day of reckoning if they want to remain standing.

I like the trials and tribulations everyone in the book had to endure. Nobody was able to escape the pressures of just being alive in those days. The ending leaves the reader with hope for the future of the cast of characters, Annabelle and Jeremy for sure. It is insinuated they get their HEA, but we really don't know.

This was a cool romance with some action thrown in. The story centers around Annabelle who lives in the mostly black settlement called Nicademus.

I'm not going to lie, this book put me in the mind of the old movie (old to me) Posse. I really kept thinking that the whole time, so I had a great frame of reference; dirt, grass, old western wooden buildings. I also watched Deadwood, so I kept that in mind for the scenery as well.

Jeremiah: Hot, blonde, rugged. I love that he is not some 3-dimensional character; I never saw him a typical, but more like outstanding and I know why Annabelle couldn’t seem to resist him.

Red Sun: Every hot Native American model and actor stood for this character in my imagination. (see last of the mohicans for plenty of resources)

The bad: Not much.

The good: I found that the book was well written, I judge a books worth based on the antagonist and I REALLY hated the bad guy, the plot was interesting and kept me entertained. I look forward to the next installment and what some of the other characters in the book will do.

Mixed Feelings- BRAB Online Book Club

First let me state that I am a huge fan of Sienna Mynx, so I am not pleased that I wasn't able to give a higher rating. This book started off slowly for me and didn't get much better after that.

I just couldn't warm up to the characters and maybe that's on me. I am not a big fan of Westerns, and this book, unfortunately did nothing to change my mind. Looking forward to her next release.

A Different Side Of Sienna

This is not the traditional Sienna Mynx novel. It took me a bit to get into it but then I couldn't put it down. Annabelle is young and some of her actions prove that but loved how she stood up for her townspeople and Jeremiah. Enjoyed the relationship between Cora and Red Sun. Money's transformation intrigued me and I hope we read more about her in the next book!

3 1/2 stars - Solid characters and engrossing story make for a good read. All the characters were interesting but I found the love affair between Cora and Red Sun to be the most engaging. Had the story line only followed Annabelle and Jeremiah I think I would have been a bit bored, our heroine was a little immature for my taste but she was only seventeen and had been indulged by her surrogate parents.

All have to say is this story was EPIC! The setting was post Civl War in a real town called Nicademus. Ms. Mynx's story had everything: a kick ass heroine, a loving sexy outlaw hero, and a score to settle!
The back story with sexy ass Red Sun and Cora added just the right touch. I applaud this author for her research and historical accuracy. Great job ;-)

A part two I hope!

It was a good read. The end I wasn't prepared for...it wasn't a bad ending but it does leave me wanting more of Jeremy and Anniebell.

I enjoyed it

I love historical romance and the fact that this was a western was a plus. I love the love story between Red Sun and Cora. I wanted to punch Jeremiah in the throat.

I didn't enjoy this one.

Which hurt a bit because I know this author is so good at writing men. While predictable the first half of the book was well paced and engaging. I don't mind predictable with romance books because we all know how we expect them to end. However I found myself hoping they never got back together.

The outlaw never really got to take full accountability for his actions instead the weight of his actions fell onto the shoulders of 38 men and women, who died leaving behind family members and friends. Jeremiah didn't even attempt to help rebuild what was was lost or broken he just packed up and left claiming he had to secure his family land.

So 38 peaceful black folks died, the white man walked free and he left the woman he claimed to love. No letters, no visits, nothing. For 13 months he tried to rebuild his life elsewhere, found himself a new woman and everything, and when he realized he was shit at that to, he came back to Niggadamus. His back up plan.

I don't want him anywhere near Annabelle, as imature and thoughtless as she is. If a man loves you, he see's you as a priority and no amount of chopping wood and smirking will fix what was lost. His apologies felt like water running down a fig leaf. Every time he attempted to do his mediocre form of groveling I could felt my lips curl with disgust. The name of this book should be At what cost because when was he worth it ?

He was never truly an ally, he just ended up seeing the people of the town as people and not just blacks. He never fought for their cause he fought for what was lost to his family, he never cared for them after they suffered their losses, and he never treated the woman that he claimed to love with precedence.

I loved red sun the most but I wasn't too fond of miss cora, I understand and respect her character. But hearing that she inebriated a 15 year old girl and put her up for a life of abuse itched my skin.

My opinions are all based on my personal taste so despite my dissatisfaction I could still see someone enjoying this book. The writing was enjoyable, the characters were diverse and no two people felt the same, their stories made sense and ofc Sienna KNOWS how to write good smut so you don't have to worry about that.

Last thing before I go, this author is one of the few that is able to capture love and emotions translating to physically intimacy, she always shows their passion for each other coming into the act itself which converts fucking to lovemaking. Idk if I explained that right but yeahhh, love her writing to the moon and back.

Annebelle was a very strong willed individual. She experienced a lot and learned a lot from Red Sun. I enjoyed the story between her and "the Outlaw". I was very interested in the town that was composed of misfits of this time so to speak. I thought it was a little out of sync because Anna wanted to be a nurse but her English was more broken than the lady that ran the bar. Over all it was a good read. However, I felt that the author just ended it. She didn't give any true insight as to what happened to the outlaw and Annabelle after the town was saved. I would have liked to know how they ended up or how their relationship developed or rekindled.

I'd recommend this reading to all those that like historical fiction. I think they would love to story and background.

Happy reading.

Really enjoyed this tale!

I rarely write reviews even though I read often, but I decided to write this one because I really enjoyed this one. The men are mysterious and courageous at times and the women have heart and fire! Great dialogue between characters and hot scenes. Ending was realistic and you get different perspectives. Go ahead and add it to your library, because I approve.

Enjoyable read

I liked this book 📖 the racism is real to this day an seeing it back then compared to what they wrnt thru an what we are currently going through it sucks to know that one race can have so much hatred for another for no reason besides the color of their skin is crazy...BLM is something we have to continue to fight for. But glad this book was able to end well with the help of Daniel and the whole town fighting to save it

Hmm

There's a lot to like about this story. The free black people in their own town thriving in a chaotic time, the spirit of Annabelle and Red Sun with his devotion to his daughter and to Kitty. Did not love the selfishness of the outlaw or the town not having a choice but to defend him because of Annabelle. Because of the ending, I think Sampson will come out as the loser.

2Thumbs up

So I love historical romance, but I am biased because I only read one author religiously. This one was awesome! The detail for the action was just right. If there was a series I would definitely follow!

1 star and a half.

It's not a good book. Honestly, I don't understand why Annabelle is willing to sacrifice everyone in the town for her pet project, Jeremiah. How are you sacrificing everyone's lives over 1 white criminal? It feels so selfish, and love story doesn't make sense, considering they just met for one day.

Thoroughly enjoyed this read. The plot was tightly woven, with conflict and suspense sparking off the page. The author had a command of the facts that made her characters flesh and bone and her villians as nasty as can be. Sienna Mynx just got a reader for life.

I didn't like it, I didn't hate it.

First and foremost this was not up to the usual Sienna Mynx gold standards. I have read the Battaglia series and Harmony. I did not like the latter but I am obsessed with the Battaglia series. Love it, it was brilliant. This book, however, fell very short. As some of the other commenters mentioned there was a lack of chemistry between the leads. The 'nursed back to health/fall in love' scenario is a pedestrian cliche that does not lend itself to real love, more like gratitude and convenience. There were also some weird contradictions in the book that interrupted the flow and believability of the story. Some of the language felt to modern at times, the women were a little too bold and reckless for the time, the story even relied on some very convenient plot points instead of probability....

If this is your first Sienna Mynx book, I highly encourage you to start with another. This is not her best work.

Hated it

I hated this book. I love this author but the book I can't put into words how much I wish I had the abililty to unread what I read. Cowboys and Indians and bad IR romance. And the hero I thought was a wimp and the h I thought was a dingbat. I paid good money for my outrage.

Entertaining but not stellar. I think ultimately, Jeremiah was just a tad too beta for me. I went in hoping for Josie Wales...or at the very least Daniel Craig in Cowboys and Aliens lol. Didn't happen. Oh well.
